Many books over here are being sold right out of the normal book stores.
If you buy one, you get a bunch of normal audio CDs. No copy protection.
Any one can buy audio books in this form. More and more books are becoming
available this way here. On each CD, you have between 10 and 15 audio
tracks on each disk.
I ripped all of them to mp3 files and then organized all files per book,
so that I now have 001.mp3, 002.mp3, 003.mp3 up til, sometimes, 579.mp3.
So if a book consists of 10 CD disks with 10 tracks per CD, I then would
have 1 renumbered collection consisting of 001.mp3 up till 100.mp3.

What I want, is put this on my iphone, so that I can listen to my book
anywhere. To make that happen, I need to import all numbered mp3 files
that together make up one book, into itunes. I've been trying this the
past few days, but I don't succeed.

I start up itunes, go into the file menu and chose add to library. I then
browse to the folder containing the numbered mp3 files I want to add and
then V o space on the choose button. Itunes then imports them, but it
organizes it according to the mp3 tags, which are either incorrect or
missing, as I never cared about them in my windows life. I have everything
organized by filename, in a large folder structure.

In short: given a large collection of nicely numbered mp3 files, how do I
get them into itunes, and then to my iphone, so that they play in order?

backup solution question

2010-09-04 Thread Paul Erkens

Hi all,

I am now using super duper as my mac backup utility. Mike Arrigo
demonstrated it in his podcast series somewhere. I bought it and I'm very
happy with what it can do.

However, some of you on this list use carbon copy cloner. Does any of you
know an advantage of using carbon copy cloner, as opposed to super duper?

Interested to know.

You can make a bootable image of your hard drive with carbon copy cloner. I can
find several advantages to this. For example, you can make this and boot in to
your os with your settings from a school mac and eject your drive when you are
done.

Take care.

Hi Anne Robertson,

I remember someone on this list explaining how you can have a document from

does as well? Take a document, have it read aloud by a synthetic voice and
recorded in mp3? I was looking at convenience ware's site that you pointed

Re: a few new mac questions

2010-09-04 Thread Scott Howell
MJ,

I am going to assume that you are referring to switching the function keys to
perform software functions instead of hardware functions. If that is the case,
you will find this setting in System Preferences, keyboard, and look for the
following: "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys (x) checkbox."
Once you check this box, your function keys will work properly with VOiceOver.
Btw, you can access the hardware functions of those keys by holding down the fn
key which is to the left of the control key.

hth,

Re: itunes and a lot of mp3 files

2010-09-04 Thread William Windels
Hi Paul,

When you have some audio-cd with audiotracks, first you need to import them in
the format you prefer.
You can find this setting in the preferences menu.

After importing all this cd's , go to the folder in your sourceless named:
recently added.
There you will see all your tracks.

I hope that they are put in a alphabetical order equivalent to the order of the
book.
if so, select all this files with shift (+vo)+ arrow up/down.
Then, press command+i and go to tabcontrol: options.
There you can set:
audiobook, play this files yes/no in shufflemode, take all this tracks together
while playing.

I hope also for you that this procedure will work with itunes 10.
Like I posted yesterday , Itunes 10 seems to be less compatible with vo.
The add to itunes as a spoken track , seems not to work anymore.

good luck,

best regards,
William

GhostReader will read almost any text-based document. You can set up to five
different voices and you can switch from one to another on the fly.

There is also an undocumented feature which allows you to put tags into the
text of a document that will cause GhostReader to switch to a particular voice
as it reads. In this way, for instance, you can have a different voice for each
character in a play.

GhostReader has controls for: Play, Pause/Stop, Fast Forward, Rewind, Jump to
beginning of sentence, Skip sentence, Jump to beginning of paragraph, Skip
paragraph, Read Selected Text, and Close Reader Window.

You can use GhostReader to read any document in real time, or have the document
turned into a sound file or iTunes track.

For anyone purchasing Infovox iVox voices, GhostReader can be added to the
purchase for an extra €10 making it a very worthwhile purchase.

The GhostReader keyboard shortcuts are system wide, so you can control
GhostReader from within another application. This is particularly useful if you
are using GhostReader to read instructions on how to do something in another
application.

I always advise people who are buying Infovox iVox voices to buy GhostReader at
the same time, the extra €10 are very well spent.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Funny Issue with Mail

2010-09-04 Thread Scott Granados
Sure, what is the address top level domain you're sending from.

Is this your own mail server, do the reverse and forward records in DNS match?

Is there a PTR record present for your mail server if it's your own?

One possibility is that the mail server your writing from isn't properly
configured and or set up correctly in DNS and the target mail server where your
writing to is configured to reject mail thinking it's a spam source and it may
not allow the message to transfer at all. It's part of the standard ruleset in
sendmail.

Are you certain your mail server is picking up the message, the message moves
from the outbox to the sent folder?

Give us a little background on your source address / mail server and maybe we
can provide somep ointers.

Just an idea I could be way off, it could be a mail program issue but that
seems like likely. I am very very new to Apple mail though so take what I say
with a grain of sault. I've been working on mail transfer agents for a solid
20 years though so I've seen this type of behavior with misconfigured mail
servers.

Re: MS Word's lack of access with VO

2010-09-04 Thread Scott Granados
Actually, you'd be surprised how receptive both IT departments and your
management are to this sort of thing.

At least where I work which is a medium sized company of about 500 employees or
so there was no resistance at all. We already did have a relationship with
Apple but when I pointed out how accessibility was included and universal
access was part of apple's thinking they jumped on it.

COuld be a california mind set but I think companies are more responsive than
you might think.

Re: Funny Issue with Mail

2010-09-04 Thread Michael Busboom
Justin, I have had this problem before and still do from time to time. I have
narrowed it down to something that may have nothing to do at all with Apple
Mail, but here is how I live with the problem which I have thus far been unable
to solve:

For several days, work colleagues were not getting my mail though I was sending
it to them and nothing was ever bounced back. It turned out in my case that
when I changed my ISP, the headache went away.

I still have the same annoying problem with certain addresses whenever I use my
mobile Internet broadband connection. Strangely enough, I can't send messages
to other people who are using the same Internet mobile broadband ISP.

I have never figured out the solution; I have just learned to live with it. If
I need to make good and sure that someone is going to get the message, I use
the ISP's webmail interface to send the note.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Mike

Work around fix for non-working Automator workflows in iTunes 10 [was Re: add to itunes as a spoken track with itunes 10]

2010-09-04 Thread Esther

Hi William,

There's a work around for the problem of workflows, such as adding to
iTunes as a spoken track, no longer working in iTunes 10. The issue
is that Automator workflows may check the version of iTunes before
running workflow actions to make sure that features used are
supported. Because numbers in versions appear in alphabetical sort
order, version 10.0 of iTunes is being treated as a number that is
smaller (e.g. earlier) than version 9.0 of iTunes, and Automator is
rejecting the use of some workflow actions with the new version 10.0
of iTunes. The temporary fix is to edit the property list for the
workflow and either change the version string that is being checked
from "4.6" to "0" or to delete the lines that check the version
entirely.

Here's the link to the article in Mac OS X Hints:
http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20100903004553923
(Get Automator working again in iTunes 10 by chrischram September 03,
2010)

As has been already reported in Macworld, Automator actions that talk
to iTunes all broke upon the release of iTunes 10.0. This is because
each action specifies in a text string in its Info.plist file that it
requires iTunes version 4.6 or higher, and alphabetically, '10.0' is
smaller than '4.6.' I frequently use 'Add to iTunes as a Spoken
Track' (activated in System Preferences » Keyboard » Services). Here
is how I got it working again.

'Add to iTunes as a Spoken Track.workflow' is found in /System/Library/
Services. Navigate to that location and double-click the workflow
file. Don't Panic! We are not going to modify this file; we're just
looking for error messages when it's opened in Automator.

Automator complains that the actions 'Import Audio Files' and 'Add
Songs to Playlist' could not be loaded because the application iTunes
is the wrong version.

Navigate to /System/Library/Automator. WARNING: Do not modify files
found under /System! Copy 'Import Audio File.action' and 'Add Songs to
Playlist.action' to a convenient location in your User area. After
copying, right-click on one of those files and select 'Show Package
Contents.' Inside the package you will find a Contents folder within
which is an Info.plist file. Open this file in your favorite text
editor. Look for a section of text that looks something like this:

Display Name
iTunes
Resource
com.apple.iTunes
Type
application
Version
4.6

Delete the 'Version' line and the '4.6' line (the last two lines in
the dict entry). Save. Repeat this process for the other action file.

Launch Automator. Select File » Import Actions... and choose the
actions you just modified. These modified actions will be placed in ~/
Library/Automator. You may want to color-label them so that they can
be removed if/when Apple fixes this problem. You probably will want to
log out/log back in to get your workflow working.

This process should work for any iTunes-related Automator action that
broke when iTunes 10.0 was released.

Disclaimer: I haven't updated to iTunes 10, but to fix the 'Import
Audio Files.action' and 'Add Songs to Playlist.action' files based on
the above description, I'd probably try something like this:

1. To navigate to the /System/Library/Automator folder, in Finder,
press Command-Shift-G (for "Go to folder"), then either type or paste
in:

/System/Library/Automator/
into the text box of the dialog window and press return.

2. Navigate to the action you want to copy, e.g. VO-Right arrow to the
table of file actions and interact (VO-Shift-Down arrow), then press
"i m p" to go to "Import Audio File.action". (I'm usually using list
view for Finder here -- this option is Commmand-2).

3. Copy "Import Audio File.action" with Command-C. I'd simply open a
new Finder window with Command-N and navigate to the user location
folder I wanted to place these actions to work in and paste with
Command-V. Then I would use Command-accent to switch back to the
first Finder window set to the /System/Library/Automator/ folder and
navigate to "Add Songs to Playlist.action".

4. Copy "Add Songs to Playlist.action" with Command-C, switch to the
second Finder window with Command-accent, and paste the action into
the user folder of your choice with Command-V.

5. To modify the Info.plist files for each action, bring up the
context menu (VO-Shift-M), arrow down to "Show Package Contents", and
press return. Use VO-backslash to expand the Contents folder or, for
non-English input keyboards, press VO-H twice to bring up the commands
menu and arrow down to "Toggle Disclosure Triangle" and press return.

6. Navigate to the Info.plist file and use the context menu (VO-Shift-
M) to choose "Open with", return, and then select "TextEdit" from the
list of "Other" options.

7. Use Command-F to find, and type "resources", then return. The
version lines you want to delete are in the section f

my Macbook and my wife's iMac and did not need to reboot either. However, the
security update I mentioned did require a reboot.

You can use the hardware keys, but unless your using a keyboard that does not
have a fn key, you won't have this problem. Keep in mind if you do not have a
fn key, your going to have to either reach to the machine to perform this task
(i.e. if you have an external keyboard with a notebook) or constantly go into
System Preferences and toggle the setting. SO, solution, don't use a keyboard
without a fn key. :)

a Mac offering, if not someone please correct me. I know the Windows side is
accessible. The advantage is offsite backup. Regardless of the solution you
use offsite backup is important. Even something as simple as backing up to an
external disk and leaving that disk at work or in your safety deposit box,
mothers house, somewhere other than onsite with you. I'm not saying buy some
super expensive solution lke Iron Mountain but keeping a disk offsite is
critical even if it means you have a way to restore your data after your
devices at your home location are stolen or damaged. Something to consider.

Re: Funny Issue with Mail

2010-09-04 Thread Scott Granados
The problem is your provider probably hosts spamming customers so their IP
ranges end up in black lists. Spam Haus is a good example of these services
that track spam based on IP addresses. Also note if you run your own SMTP mail
server on mobile IP space or space that's known and recorded with ARIN as
remote access ranges you'll automatically be included in some blacklists. Not
everyone uses these services but many companies use comercial antispam
solutions that grab a lot of this data to build their rules sets. I'm
absolutely certain from the several messages on this thread that I've seen so
far that your experiencing some variation on this theme.

Thanks
Scott

What have we done? Please help

2010-09-04 Thread Carolyn
Hi mac brothers and mac sisters:
I just downloaded iTunes10 to my mbp, and it seems to have rendered poor Alex
speechless, or at least turned him into a stuttering M-M-M-br-br-broken mess I
know someone talked about reducing some of it's clutter, but I'm clueless as to
how to proceed at this time, since everything now seems to be interacting with
everything else. If this post seems frantic and confusing that's because
that's about how I feel about my poor mbp.
If anyone knows how I can begin to sort this out, or revert to iTunes
9-whatever, please help.
This thing's so fried I've resorted to my old faithful Dell, on which I
declined the update.
Please help!!!
And thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Carolyn and what sounds like Alex on steroids!

Re: Funny Issue with Mail

2010-09-04 Thread Justin Kauflin
Scott,
To be honest, a lot of what your asking is a little beyond me. I have my
Gmail account setup, and I'm assuming it was done right, as most of my messages
are getting sent out. So far, all I know is that the message is being
registered as being sent out, as the e-mail is moved to the sent folder. The
mail program also makes the nifty airplane noise to indicate that the message
is on its way out. I've tried sending messages from 2 different networks, one
in New York and one in Virginia, and have gotten the same result. After
reading some of the experiences that others have had, I'm going to go ahead and
send messages from the actual Gmail website as that doesn't cause any issues.

Thanks so much for the response and for the info.

Just out of curiosity, what do you do if you don't have an fn key? Do you use

Hi Sarah:

Until the os with the vo commands for keyboard comes out, I've found it a
little cumbersome but very doable to edit just using arrow keys. Fortunately,
iPhone messages tend to be short, so, it usually works out ok to do that.
Not very helpful, I guess. But, that's what I've done.

getting the mac to recognize an sd card

2010-09-04 Thread Carolyn
Hi Mac Family:
Ok, now that Alex has settled down a bit, I have a question, as the subject

to download books for use with the Victor Reader Stream. The Mac doesn't even
appear to see a card. Is there some way to locate and/or format it so I can
put books on it?
TIA for any help.

windfall

2010-09-04 Thread Cheree Heppe
Cheree Heppe here:

Just to prove that amazing things do happen to people, I won an IPad in a
contest.

I took the IPad to the Mac Store in Portland, Oregon for some assistance
operating it and getting it started in VoiceOver, and have made tremendous
progress using it and in synching the IPad with my NetBook.

It amazes me that my NetBook, the wireless keyboard and the IPad all fit into
this little Columbia Sports bag that might in an earlier day held make-up.

The guys at the Portland, Oregon store invite any blind person in the area to
come and investigate Apple computers and IPads. They said they will show
people how to operate the devices and let people play and learn.

The Apple Corporate store is also very helpful, but the Mac Store has more one
on one availability, at least at this point.

That IPad now has every bit of music I ever put on my NetBook, quite a few Gigs
worth, it turns out and is playing the whole lot, making very interesting
juxtapositions.

The Mac Store sells a wider variety of accessories for Apple products than the
Corporate store. I found a lovely leather case for the IPad. The case looks
like a leather book or folio that, if you didn't look too closely at the
"pages," would seem to have fallen right out of the sixteenth or seventeenth
century library in some noble house.

They also sell a stand that looks like nothing so much as a modern book stand,
like what old dictionaries and such sit upon. This stand is lightweight metal,
gray, not packable in my little Columbia bag and more of a desk item, but
multi-positionable from mirror-type vertical to table-top flatness, great for
all of our tapping and swishing gestures. This stand would be great for
elevating the IPad at a table where people were eating, preventing the device
from being on the level of the plates and glasses. It would be lovely
positioned in a kitchen for quickly looking up the weather or recipes or
playing music, but as long as I have a teenager in this house, that's where
it's never going.

Yeah that's what I'm doing but it misses words in a line. I can't show you in
this email but there you go. and it will read a period plus the next word as a
word.

Take care.

can't download a app I purchased.

2010-09-04 Thread Sarah Alawami
Hey all. I bought digit eyes but the download never to my knowledge started and
I don't see a download content in the main account page. I forgot what to do. I
don't know what to do from here.

Thanks.

2010-09-04 Thread Geoff Waaler
Hi Sarah,

I gather you did this on the Mac? Do you see digit-eyes in your list under the
apps tab? If so it should synchronize to your phone the next time you attach
it. If not you may want to retry the purchase either on your Mac or directly
on the phone since you'll not be charged twice.

HTH.
Geoff

Re: can't download a app I purchased.

2010-09-04 Thread Sarah Alawami
Hmm this gets stranger. I saw the app in the apps store and it was 800 kb or
so. I never heard that ding when it downloaded. 'm trying to sync my phone. It
appears it is there but why did I not hear the ding right away? This is curious.
