You can use the hardware keys, but unless your using a keyboard that does not 
have a fn key, you won't have this problem. Keep in mind if you do not have a 
fn key, your going to have to either reach to the machine to perform this task 
(i.e. if you have an external keyboard with a notebook) or constantly go into 
System Preferences and toggle the setting. SO, solution, don't use a keyboard 
without a fn key. :)
