Answer: How To Show Events in iCal Calendars In A Simple List View, Simular To Outlook Appoinment List Display

2010-08-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

It's been a long day so I'll keep this short. Upon research, I discovered
that one can get a simple list of all the events in any Calendar or
combination of Calendars in the latest version of iCal.

Currently, following the steps listed below will show all the events in a
calendar but I'm sure that there is a way to display only upcoming events,
as well. Be that as it may, a new iCal beta has hit the wild and I'm sure
there will be an even easier way to display such a list in the
soon-to-be-released version of iCal.

In the meantime, do the following to see a list of events in one view; i.e.
in a multi-column table.

1.
>From within iCal, place a checkmark next to the calendar or calendars
containing the events you wish to see in the calendar list. Please note
that the Calendar list must be visible in order to do this.

2.
Interact with the iCal Toolbar and place focus on the Search field.

3.
In the Search Box, enter a period (.)

4.
Stop interacting with both the Search field and the Toolbar.

5.
Browse the iCal Window until you land on the Search Results Table. The
Table will consist of all of your events with the most recent events at the
bottom.

Note that as your explore the table, you may stop interacting with it at
anytime and you will see the actual appointment being displayed on the iCal
canvas.

That's all there is to it, Folks.

Enjoy,

Mark

serious nightmare with imap gmail

2010-08-23 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi list,

I dont know if anyone has had this or if its pertinent to the listing, but i
have this major headache on the way:

I've set up my account for imap, and i have the all mail folder containing over
2 mails. Those include sent mails, deleted mails etc because in the account
options i left certain boxes checked.

Now ive archivedd all the importan mails and deleted and re created my imap
account, but all the twenty or so thousand messages are back in my box.

I wanted to know if there was a fast way to just archive all and every mail
within the web interface, or even delete it all.

Please, if someone has a link or something let me know. This is crawling my
mail app to its knees and there are loads of pictures and attachments which are
completely obsolete and which i dont need.

Thanks, and best

Is this a bug in the Magic trackpad?

2010-08-23 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hello,
I'm trying to familiarize myself with the magic trackpad, and have found
something strange:
When i'm in the groups mode and use the rotor, only characters, words and
navigation are available on a web page, however if i switch to dom mode, all
the usual things like links, visited links, form fields etc are available as
rotor options. Is this a bug or normal behaviour and have anyone else using the
Magic trackpad to their desktop computers noticed the same? If this is normal
behavior, how do i enable the other rotors in groups mode?

Hi!

Looks like it's a bug in the trackpad commander itself. All the rotor options
simply seem to disappear, even when the elements are actually present.

Re: Bluetooth keyboards for the iPhone and accented character support; Think Outside Bluetooth keyboards [was Re: great news about the mini bluetooth keyboard!]

2010-08-23 Thread Esther

Hi Scott,

I did some testing with Think Outside Stowaway Keyboard. First, with
an iPhone 4 (borrowed for the testing), if you paired the keyboard,
typed notes, etc. and then closed the keyboard (turning it off), it
does seem to re-establish a connection when the keyboard is just
opened again and you go to a notes app and tap a key, having kept
Bluetooth for the iPhone on. With my iPod Touch 3G running iOS 4, I
can't automatically re-establish the connection if I just open the
keyboard again, and try to type in a notes app. I can avoid having
to type a pairing code again, if I go to the Settings > General >
Bluetooth menu before I open up the keyboard. Then, if I press the
Control + Left and Right Fn keys to put the keyboard in discovery
mode, and double tap the device entry for the Think Outside keyboard,
it will re-connect in paired mode without my having to type in a code.

So Sandy is correct that if you use the Think Outside Stowaway
keyboard with an iPhone 4, you will reconnect by pressing a key. But
on an iPod Touch 3G (and apparently on an iPhone 3GS) updated to iOS
4, the connection is not automatically re-established by pressing a
key, so my original comment holds (although you do not have to type in
a new code if you just double tap the device in the Settings > General
> Bluetooth menu):

"If you break the connection (by closing up the keyboard, which
automatically turns the device off, or by pressing the Control+Left
and Right Fn keys), you have to go through pairing again -- re-
establishing the connection is not automatic, as with the Apple
Wireless Keyboard."

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Is this a bug in the Magic trackpad?

2010-08-23 Thread William Windels
Hi all,
Unfortunately , this is not a bug in the magic trackpad since I can't do this
also with the multi-touch trackpad that's built-in my macbook.
But anyway, you can report this ofcourse because it should be possible to
enable the router in group-mode.
You have also the same experience when you turn quick-nav on and use the
rotor-functions with left/right+up arrow.

so, let's report it...

best regards,
William

Re: Is this a bug in the Magic trackpad?

2010-08-23 Thread Justin Kauflin
If its a bug, its for all the commanders. The quick nav has this as well. I
just figured it was because of how navigation works in groups mode. didn't
figure it to be a bug. Well, we'll see what Apple says I guess.

problems with safari & google

I have been able to use google until this morning. After editing
one's search criteria VO comes back with an empty window. Has something
changed so that google is no longer accessible?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Conrad,

• navigate to your dock.
• navigate to the Dock item you wish to keep on the Dock.
• Press VO-shift-m to bring up the contextual menu.
• Navigate to Options then right to "Keep in dock".

That should do it for you.

Later...

Hi Pete,

I found out that in trying to do a search with Google VO will quit and restart.
I found the only way to do a search on google is to use Webkit. I hope that
helps. I thought this bug was fixed with the release of the new Safari, but I
guess not. I hope I've been of some help. Have a great day.

For some reason, you can still do a google search from the search widget. It
looks like it loads the exact same page of results, but doing it from the

Re: problems with safari & google

2010-08-23 Thread Chris Blouch
Yup. I was able to reproduce. Latest Safari on the search results page
causes voiceover to crash and restart over and over. Webkit nightly
build works fine. So it sounds like it isn't necessarily a Google or
Voiceover issue but rather some bug in Safari.

Re: NAS

2010-08-23 Thread Chris Blouch
While I use an old G4 Mac in the basement for this there are tons of
2-drive 2TB NAS available starting at about $210. Most of them are
platform agnostic. Here's a few from newegg:

You might also consider a Drobo which will give you empty bays for
future expansion. At least that will probably be my next step when my
current space runs out.

I'm not having any problems at all with Safari and Google.

I have web navigation set to Groups mode. I do this endless times throughout

Re: problems with safari & google

2010-08-23 Thread Paul Mills
Hi all
I'm having the same problem in Safari, but it is most definitely not limited to
Google. I downloaded and installed Webkit, this has reduced the problem
significantly. Incidently, I encountered the problem after the latest version
of Safari was installed, perhaps coincidence.
Cheers,

Paul Mills.

Re: problems with safari & google

2010-08-23 Thread Lynn Schneider
One thing I found that helped was to sign into Google with my Google ID and
tell it to keep me signed in. I don't know if this will help in the long term,
but it did help when I did that just recently. Of course, if you don't have a
Google ID, that won't help unfortunately.

Re: joining mov files?

2010-08-23 Thread Chris Blouch
Quicktime Pro is $30 from Apple and will allow you to merge multiple
movies with different sizes and codecs. The final movie will have the
image size of the largest piece and others will play in the top left
corner of the window. That said, you have to use QT Player 7 if you're
on Snow Leopard as the regular one lacks all the editing features. So
you just open up fileA and fileB in QT7. Make a new movie, go to fileA,
select All, go to the new movie and paste, go to fileB, select all, go
to the new movie and paste. When you're done save your new concatenated
movie.

Hi Sarah and Barry,

First, Barry's instructions about using the "cat" command in terminal to concatenate files are quite
accurate, but they won't solve Sarah's problem about how to join .mov files and end up with a playable result, and this
has to do with the structure of these files. Such a file joining program has to both put the data in the individual
files together, and update the header information so that it reflects the new total length. Further, there can be
potential incompatibilities between the different files being used -- an easy example would be if you were joining
constant bit rate audio mp3 files, where one of the files was encoded at a different bit rate. If all the files are
constant bit rate and encoded at the same rate, it's relatively easy to just concatenate the individual files (with a
"cat" command), and then to update the file header information to reflect a new total time. However, once you
include a file with different properties, simply sticking that file into the middle may no longer work, and you might
have to re-encode the information. The structure is actually more complicated for movie files, since instead of a
single header with tags, you have a "container" that holds both the audio and video parts of a movie, with
separate atoms (like "tags") for the various metadata.

I believe QuickTime Pro (paid) will join movie files, and allow you to operate
through the GUI interface. I've also heard that MPEG StreamClip will handle
this kind of operation. Probably someone like Darcy Burnard could comment on
this, since I don't know whether these work with the output formats that Sarah
wants. I've only really explored this subject in the context of working with
audiobook files.

Here's the page for MPEG StreamClip to check for more information:

Well, it is going to get a little more involved, but you can do the fallowing.
this will strip the header from file1, contatinate it with file2, and write the
final result to final_file:
sed 1d|cat file2 /dev/stdin>final_file

This is assuming that the header is 1 line. you need to know how many lines it
is and replace the integer in the sed command accordingly.

if you have a bunch of files who's headers need to be stripped:
( sed 1d file1&&sed 1d file2&& so on )|cat file /dev/stdin>final_
file

It might be a good idea to play around with this on simple text files just so
you know what order you want the files to be in.

Hi,

I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to do, but if all you are doing is
concatenating files you can do the fallowing:

cat file1 file2>file3

That will merge file1 and 2 putting the contents into file3. You can type man

There is also a merge command that is useful for merging changes in to or more

Hit control-c to shut down the cat util.

It doesn't mater if a file name has spaces. you can saround it with quotes,
escape the space with \, or use tab. The tab completion applies at any time.

The cat command expects a file name, and if it doesn't have one in it's

I had written up a lot of detail on this some time back which you can

used to be to get a mini to NTSC/PAL adaptor which made the mini
think it was hooked up to something, but the analog stuff has been
dropped from the modern minis. I was able to work around this by
getting a DVI->VGA adapter and a VGA->NTSC adapter. Worked out well
since we did want it hooked up to the TV anyway so the kids can get
their Elmo fix. The detect is actually done by sending signals down
certain pins and getting something back on other pins. With nothing
hooked up this detection fails and weird stuff starts happening. A
cheap used VGA display is probably the cheapest solution. They used
to sell VGA terminators but every place I found on the web had them
discontinued. There are tutorials out there on how to make your own
if you know somebody who is good with a soldering iron. I think these
might be the right things for $33, which is really steep for what
should be a $5 plug.

 Please, spare us this!

While I think it would be nice if the mini worked without a monitor,
 please,
don't give us this stuff about being forced to buy something you don't
 need.
Personally, I have a vary old monitor which I keep around just in
case I

that most

 of
us who came from windows know that does happen from time to time to
even

 the
best of us. So, even though I have never yet had a problem on the mac
 where
sighted assistance was definitely necessary, I have learned that
having a

vary inexpensive monitor around is a good idea regardless.

You can buy a used 1 for $50 or less, especially an old 15 inch LCD or
 something like that.

On my mini, I have found that any old monitor would solve the
problem and
didn't even have to be turned on. So, I hope we don't go off on
the whole

needing a monitor thing, because, it's really trivial!

The webkit nightly builds have all the latest greatest fixes but can
also have the latest undiscovered bugs. Once all the known high-priority
bugs are fixed then Apple packages it up and puts out a new Safari

Re: serious nightmare with imap gmail

2010-08-23 Thread Darcy Burnard
Hi. I can't remember the name of it, but there's a google labs feature you can
enable which allows you to have specific folders restricted from imap. You
would use this to have it not show the all mail folder. When I first set up
imap on gmail, I found an excellent article from tidbits on the best way to do
it. You can read it here.

Yep looks like it is only the google main page that causes problems not the
tool bar. I dunno what's up. but I would thorugh the safari menu report this
bug to apple so they can look at it and perhaps report to google about it.
Remember tp explain what conditions it is under in the edit text field.

Take care.

Well, it is going to get a little more involved, but you can do the
 fallowing.
this will strip the header from file1, contatinate it with file2, and
write the final result to final_file:
 sed 1d|cat file2 /dev/stdin>final_file

This is assuming that the header is 1 line. you need to know how many
lines it is and replace the integer in the sed command accordingly.

if you have a bunch of files who's headers need to be stripped:
 ( sed 1d file1&&sed 1d file2&& so on )|cat file /dev/stdin>final_
 file

It might be a good idea to play around with this on simple text files just
so you know what order you want the files to be in.

Actually you've gotten better luck with quick-nav than I have. I only tend to

Subject: getting the most out of quicknav?

Hi, I'm forcing myself to use quicknav today, just because. So, I've done
some googling and some reading and some playing, but I sense that I'm not
getting the most out of quicknav, because to be honest, it's somewhat more
convenient, but I'm not as blown away by the simplicity as I thought I would be.

So far, I've got left+right turn qn on or off.
  down+right interact.
  left+down stop interacting.
left+up and up+right, move around the router.
up+down perform the default action on an item in the voiceover curser.
Arrow keys on their own are used to navigate in the desired direction.

Now, I'm thinking there must be more to this. For one thing, I'm finding it
counter-intuitive because I generally don't interact with things.

For example, I would normally arrow up and down the messages table in mail or
the mailboxes table without interacting. This will read me the entire row of
information and I usually find that to be what I want to happen. If I sit on
the messages table with qn and press the down arrow, of course it takes me to
the scroll bars and things, and in order to read the messages table, I have to
either interact with it, or turn qn off.

There are ways I can get around this in some tables, for example, if I know
what I want I can press the first letter or first few letters. That will work
some of the time, but in the messages table of mail, I want to scan them all,
not usually specific ones, so it falls over.

So, how do people get along with this all the time? or are we all sitting
here turning qn on and off all the time depending on the situation? Am I
missing any qn features?

  Thanks,

  Erik Burggraaf

Re: Hebrew anyone?

2010-08-23 Thread Esther

Hi Melinda,

Hebrew is not one of the languages supported by VoiceOver on the iPhone. Here's
a link to the Apple Knowledge Base document that lists supported iPhone
languages for Voice Control and VoiceOver on the iPhone and iPod Touch:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3562
For a few languages that are not supported by VoiceOver, you can find apps that
have text-to-speech support that will speak text that is usually typed or
pasted into the app with text-to-speech voices that work with the non-supported
languages. These are usually translation apps, and the voices are typically
available for in-app purchase for $0.99 or $1.99 each.  A few of these apps
cost more for the app, but include some of these voices.  For example, Trippo
VoiceMagix, which is a speech recognition translation app, currently only
available in the U.S. and Canadian app stores, will both speak and translate to
Hindi -- a language that is not supported for text entry or voice on the iPhone
under iOS 4.

As far as I know, there are no text-to-speech voice options for Hebrew in apps
for the iPhone, iPod Touch or the iPad.  There are apps that will add a Hebrew
input keyboard, and work with text, but I don't know of any apps which will
speak Hebrew, apart from some language learning apps with recorded audio
snippets for pronunciation of words for new learners, or possibly some travel
guidebooks with audio clips of stock phrases.  There are some apps that support
Arabic voices, since this is one of the voices you can get from the Acapela
group, and there is the Jibbigo Iraqi English Speech Translator app ($24.99 --
pretty specialized in dialect), but nothing that I'm aware of for Hebrew. Also,
the translation apps that can be finagled to speak text usually have length
limits on the text that they'll speak, as well as requiring you to copy and
paste content into the app.

App availability depends on the country of the app store you use, which you
don't mention, but I'm assuming it is the U.S., which gives the widest range of
options.  Even in that case, I'm not aware of anything that will speak Hebrew
on the iPhone or iPod Touch, which I assume is what you want.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Weird Safari issue/voiceover restarting

2010-08-23 Thread carlene knight
Hi:

I wripped a CD of mine for my own use with a bad track and now I can't use
Safari without VO restarting every time I try to navigate. We are using
Spaces, but have been for quite some time with no problems. Does anybody know
if this problem could be connected with the CD? Could a Mac be prey to another
Media Max attack? It was a commercial CD.

Thumbjam iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad music app instructions [was Re: RE: musical instruments]

2010-08-23 Thread Esther

Hi Paul,

The quick answer to your question about how I use the Thumbjam music app without running
into menu controls with VoiceOver toggled off is that I run this on my iPad.  Even at
full extension my hand can't span anywhere near a diagonal reach of the four corners
where the control menu buttons are located, although I did once manage to hit the
"Loop" button for recording loops when I was going for very high notes on my
device I'm cc'ing this post to the macvisionaries list so I can find it and link to it
again if anyboday asks a question.

However, the more detailed answer to your question about using Thumbjam on an iPhone is that you can hide the buttons for the menu options.  (I just looked this up under the
options for the "Edit" menu button in the bottom left corner.)  Even when the buttons are displayed, they're kept out of the way of the main playing area.  The key
control buttons can be switched off from the "Sound" menu button in the top left corner.  (Thumbjam defaults to Portrait mode use, even on the iPad, so the top left
corner refers to holding your device with the "Home" button at the bottom).  Double tapping the "Sound" button and then double tapping the "Key
Controls" button will toggle the key controls along the left edge of the screen on or off.  This is a pretty thin strip -- if I run my finger down along the left side of my
iPad screen the key control buttons are only about as wide as my finger. While I'm thinking about this, although this is all nicely labeled for VoiceOver, it would be nice if the
four menus in the corner's were each announced with "button" afterwards, and it would also be nice if these toggles could be announced as "off" or
"on" or "selected", or something like that.  (Just some notes for Scott to pass on to the developer).  Anyway, with the key controls toggled off, the only
buttons are in the four corners of the device, and it turns out that you can hide three of them so that the only active button is the "Edit" button in the bottom left
corner of the device.  Apart from that, you get the heading announcement of the instrument at the top of the screen, and the key announcement at the bottom of the screen, but
these don't activate anything.

So, what you can do to hide all the controls is first, hide the "Key Controls" that show up by default along the left side of the device by double tapping the "Sound" button in the top left corner, then double tapping the "Key Controls" button in the
"Sound" menu to toggle these off.  That gets rid of all buttons except for the menu buttons for "Sound" (top left corner), "Loop" (top right corner), "Edit" (bottom left corner") and "Prefs" (bottom right corner).  Then, double tap the
"Edit" menu button in the bottom left corner, and run your finger up past the buttons for "Sample", "Controls", "Effects", and "Save Preset" to the "Hide Menus" button, and double tap this button.  At this point, the only active
button is one that VoiceOver announces as "Menu" in the bottom left corner.  In fact, even simply double tapping this button won't activate anything -- if you flick left from this button after double tapping you get an announcement "Double tap to show menus". Now, that's
announced for standard gestures, so to unhide the menu buttons you're going to have to put your finger on the "Menu" button in the bottom left corner and do a double split tap -- e.g, touch the "Menu" button with one finger and do a double tap on the screen with another
finger.  At that point the "Menu" button will turn into an "Edit" button, the "Edit" menu options will become active (and you can dismiss the menu), and the buttons in the other three corners of the app will reappear.

In the meantime, you can toggle VoiceOver off with all the app buttons but the "Menu"
button in the bottom left corner hidden, and play your music without fear of tripping any control
buttons.  Evern if you manage to touch the "Menu" button in the bottom left corner you
won't activate anything until you do your double split tap.  There are probably other people (like
Joseph who suggested this app on the Macvisionaries list), who can probably tell you more about
actually making music with the app.

HTH.  Cheers,

Esther

How do you keep from hitting a menu when voice over is off and you are

As I mentioned in another message, I found an interesting piano app, but if

I assume you are totally blind as am I?
If this really is accessible, it could be rather fun.

Hi Carlene,

I had a similar problem with Safari. I was able to solve it by going
to the safari menu and selecting reset. That stopped it from restarting voice
Over repeatedly and it worked much better. I don't know if that will help but
it might be a mostly painless way to try to solve your problem.

Re: getting the most out of quicknav?

2010-08-23 Thread Eric Caron
Hi list,

I am certainly in the minority here. I love quick nav and find it
helps me move around quickly. I have found I can use VO keys without turning
quick nav off to increase functionality. I tend to use many VO features for
example I use track pad gestures, keyboard defined commands with the right
option key, quick nav and standard VO commands. They all help in different
ways. It is great to have so many options. My only frustration is that the VO
keys are two keys in a tricky location. I'd love to be able to assign the caps
lock key to be the VO keys!

I'd love to see more tips on using quick nav.

Re: getting the most out of quicknav?

2010-08-23 Thread Mary Otten
I really like QN for quickly getting through lots of mail, because I can just
get the subject as I arrow down through the table with QN. I'd love to see that
within tables on the web, but it would conflict with the web rotor as things
stand right now.

iPhone Configuration Utility with Voiceover

2010-08-23 Thread Victor Tsaran

Hello guys,
Did anyone try to use iPhone Configuration Utility with Voiceover?
Everything seems to work fine except that I cannot find the "install"
for an app I just added to the configuration profile.

Any takers?

Thanks,
Vic

Resolved: Re: My Turn With ICal: V-card for Email Reminder To Work?

2010-08-23 Thread Teresa Cochran
Ok, in order for all of this to work, I had to go into the cards menu in
Address Book and set the card with my contact info in it as "my card". In other
words, the "set as my card" choice in the view menu. Phew.

Would you pick up a touch screen iMac?

2010-08-23 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi list,

I was just wondering how many of us would strongly consider picking up a iMac
with a touch screen. Read article at
http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-20014484-260.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-20

I for one, would jump at the chance.
