RE: ITunes won't start

2010-04-14 Thread Joe Plummer
Well did not know he was talking about on a Mac but it is still a good thing
to backup iTunes just in case. I usually don't have to worry about backing
up but do several backups. I use a online backup called carbonite.com and
then I back up to a external device some sort. I fully believe in backing
up, no matter what platform you use. But you did answer the question very
good.

Subject: Re: ITunes won't start

Hi Søren,

First of all, if the crashing started when you updated to iTunes 9.1
(the latest version), then this could be related to your navigation
settings under VoiceOver Utility (VO-F8) if you have mouse cursor
follows VoiceOver cursor checked. If you're experiencing crashing and
you were last set to the iTunes Store in your sources table, it could
be due to a connection problem with the iTunes Store being down.
Another way to check whether this is a local settings problem that
might be a problem with your account setup and preferences rather than
with the iTunes app is to start up iTunes in minimal form under a test
account. If it doesn't crash, then there's either a problem file in
your iTunes library or a problem preferences setting.

In any case, you don't have to worry about losing any of your
purchases. If worst came to worst, simply adding the contents of your
Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications folder to even a completely new
iTunes library with the Command-O "Add to Library" shortcut would
restore the applications. Your backups (with information about
favorites in apps, contacts, etc.) are stored in you account under:
Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

So it's certainly possible to recover everything. Incidentally, I
know that it is common under Windows to have to re-install
applications and iTunes, but I've never had to reinstall iTunes, and I
can count on the fingers of one hand the number of applications that
I've had to re-install on a Mac. In those two instances, it was
because the updated package installation changed to a completely
different format that I wasn't confident would simply "update".

Also, if you have Time Machine running, most of this will be backed up
already. Let us know if you need more help.

Best,

Esther

Re: ITunes won't start

2010-04-14 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

It doesn't necessarily depend on mouse settings, however. Even if you use
VoiceOver commands like VO-Shift-Command-T to go to the iTunes Web area to the
SOurces table, it will crash. Also, if you move through headings blazingly
fast, this can also crash iTunes.

However, as soon as I noticed the bug on the day iTunes update came out, I told
Apple and they replied the same day, saying it was most likely a specific
iTunes problem rather than anything to do with VoiceOver. They promised to look
into it, so hopefully we'll see the fix. I'd rather not claim it is or is not a
VOiceOver thing, as I don't know anything about iTunes, except how to use it. :)

it has sometimes been the case that VoiceOver has actually been the problem in
other applications. But don't ask me how. I just listen and do. I am all but a
humble underdog of Apple's superior support staff. :( Come on iTunes fix! Yay.

I like portrait better. hold the iPad upright, and use the switch on the right

Hi Esther and the others who have replied on my issue.
It seems as my issue was a combination of my preferences file which needs to be

RE: Which iPad mode is better?

2010-04-14 Thread Larry Wanger
No right answer for this. Portrait or landscape depends entirely on the app
you are using. Some of the iPhone apps only work in portrait on either
platform for example. How you hold it is a very personal decision in terms
of what's comfortable for you. It depends on whether you're in constant
contact with the screen or just holding it while reading a book.

You can navigate to this area in two ways that I'm aware of. You can either
use the VoiceOver command VO M, pressing the M twice while holding down the
control and option keys. The other is a Mac command, control F8. Use VO plus
arrow keys to find what you're looking for.

Re: Battery status

2010-04-14 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

There is a third way to check this as well, though this is mostly useful to
users with either a visual impairment but someone who has a bit of sight, or is
fully sighted.

Almost all the way down the left bottom corner on your Macbook is a small
button. The size of a paperclip. If you hold it, a light will blink on. Small
diodes will tell you how many bars of battery are left. It also works if the
Macbook is turned off.

Re: Which iPad mode is better?

2010-04-14 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

Let me get this straight, though. If I understand the orientation lock feature,
it will force the application into landscape or portrait, regardless if the
application does not support landscape, for example? I'm talking mostly if you
are using iPhone applications, because I'm sure iPad applications will support
both.

Re: Which iPad mode is better?

2010-04-14 Thread Charlie Doremus
Here is the story. Most iPhone app work in portrait mode. Some iPad apps
work in landscape, AT BAT 2010 is a good example of landscape on the iPad
and portrait on the iPhone. Given the number of apps it is best to check
them out on an app by app basis.

Trying new Echofon twitter for Mac, I can't read tweets.

2010-04-14 Thread Brett Campbell
Is anyone on the list trying the newly released Echofon for Mac? It seems
quite accessible with VoiceOver, with the slight exception that the tweets
aren't being read. I'm wondering if my tweets aren't being downloaded for some
reason, or if VoiceOver can't read them. If someone else has taken this
twitter client for a spin, I'd be interested in hearing about your experience.

Just joined

2010-04-14 Thread Rob Lambert
Hello,

I'm Rob. I just joined this list. I've been a Mac user for the past seven
years, as a user of their magnifier software. I love how you can just walk
up to a Mac, press a keystroke, and it zooms in or speaks. I've been telling
people that, regarding our assistive technology, we're seeing a shift. I
know many Mac users, and one who's about to come into possession of a Mac
Mini. At CSUN I found out the ZoomTwix CCTV/OCR unit will have Mac
compatibility, and also that RFB&D's #1 requirement for it's new software
that's coming out, is to run on the Mac. So I'm curious about who's in
agreement with me, do you feel we're seeing a shift in our industry, and
that Windows alone will no longer cut it? I certainly do.

Re: Just joined

2010-04-14 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hello Rob,

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Agencies are actually beginning to realize
that Macs are, as you stated, assistive technology now. Providing training to a
visually impaired user is also much easier. Now, you don't have to familiarize
yourself with six or so screen readers, but only one, and not more than one
Zoom solution. This also makes it easier on developers testing their
applications for accessibility issues.

I absolutely agree with you on this. It's not all going to be about windows and
their various third party screen readers, we as VI technology users are
definitely being given more choice. And that is great. Just the thing we need.
It's about time windows wasn't dominating the VI computer market. Just today
someone implied that I "should" be adequate in Microsoft office. Why? I use a
proficient word processor on the mac that does everything I want it to do.

Re: ichat and msn configuration, help needed

2010-04-14 Thread William Windels
Hi James,
I am already using adium and yes, it works for msn and facebook.

But, the reason is :
1 adium is a tird party application and, as much as possible, I try to use
app's from Apple, if possible.
2 Adium is not made conform the apple defaults. e.
g. the preferences menu is complex and , it has not the defaults for setting up
dialogue boxes like apple does.
I compare the preferences panel of adium with the system preferences panel of
mac osx.
And, some other strange things like:
When you have a invitation to add a friend on facebook, adium is showing a
dialogue box where you have buttons like: accept, accept and add...
This seems to bee buttons, voiceover said but, to let it work, you should do a
contextmenu on this elements to accept and add.

This things are for me the reason to change to ichat.

But, it makes no sence for me to use 2 app's : one for facebook and another for
msn.
For this reason , I stay on adium.

best regards,
William

Re: Just joined

2010-04-14 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

Not really. I personally don't care if I am adequate or not in its use. If I
have been using a Mac computer all my life, or if I didn't use Microsoft Office
daily, I wouldn't be adequate.

SO even if you have it, adequacy is not a guarantee, regardless if it is a
necessity to use Microsoft Office or not to do your work. Besides, a lot of
third-party programs actually provide the same level of usefulness that
Microsoft Office might provide, though more efficiently. One disadvantage to
Microsoft Office is actually that it takes forever and a day to load,
regardless of the computer, which minimizes efficiency in that you have to wait
a few extra seconds. Even if you get it started up, the possibility is still
that it may crash and will not remember where you left off.

2010-04-14 Thread marie Howarth
I agree. And not to mention the fact that just because most businesses use it,
that slowly the culture of networking is changing how business is done. I am
much better at editing and formatting my docs than I ever was on windows and
had used windows for several long years before that. My adequacy on the mac is
supreme for me personally so being forced to use a product because the masses
use it doesn't make my lack of use a negative skill. It just means I'm better
with other programmes that do the same job. Computer skills is computer skills
at the end of the day, isn't it?

Re: Would appreciate your feedback on my new product launch for Mac

2010-04-14 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

They have to be familiar with VoiceOver, at least to some degree, to attain
VoiceOver accessibility in their applications. I think what they mean is that
if you are familiar with the need not to install anything to get accessibility
out of the box. They were comparing it to Windows where it is necessary to
install third-party technology to access the computer in question.

2010-04-14 Thread Søren Jensen
Hi.

Sounds great, but it seems as this product will only be available in the US.
I'm from Denmark, and I wanna help you testing it, but it wouldn't be worth it
if it's only for the US.
I've just completed the survey, and I got confused about the following question:
. Are you familiar with Mac screen reader (Voice Over) and screen magnification
features that make Mac computers accessible right out of the box without the
need to install JAWS and/or ZoomText?
I wanna ask you the same question. Sounds like you don't know much about Mac
computers and VOiceover, since VOiceover is the only screenreader on the Mac
computer, which means you can't install any other screenreader like Jaws or
Window Eyes if you're not familiar with VOiceover...

Hi,

It being a negative or a positive is completely dependent on the situation one
finds them self in. People use applications at work or school for example,
just because they don't have a choice. If my memory is correct, someone said
you should be adequate in MS office. On face value this is sound advice just
because this is the standard used in many businesses and learning institutions.
This has nothing or very little to do with what you prefer or, what is faster
or efficient. It is just having a skill that many people expect as a basic
requirement in many walks of life. Just my 2 cents.

Accessing Used Mac Mini

2010-04-14 Thread danrathburn

Hello,

I am considering buying a used Mac Mini from an estate sale. The
previous owner might have left the Mini password-protected. Is there a
way to clear any passwords and reinstall OSX?

Thanks,

Apple Airport Express Base Station

2010-04-14 Thread Linda Adams
Hi everyone,

I have just acquired this WI-Fi for my home computer. I will be using
it for my Macbook and a PC. This is my first experience with the Wi-Fi
so I thought I'd ask if there is anything special I should be on the
look out for as I get it set up. My ISP is Earthlink and I have DSL.

Thanks,

Re: ichat and msn configuration, help needed

2010-04-14 Thread erik burggraaf
I'm a big fan of, "use what works". I love apple, but I don't love apple to
the exclusion of all else. As far as accessibility is concerned, it should
make increasingly less difference what apps you use or who provides them.

I'm interested in this thread because one of my clients wants to use Ichat to
make msn video conversations with her webcam, which isn't supported by adium.

I looked at the process, but the idea of becoming a server just to get on msn
seemed a bit out of the way to me.

2010-04-14 Thread denise avant
hello,
after having my iphone for six months now, i have really enjoyed my experience
with apple. To that end, i am looking into purchasing a mac book pro. In fact,
i called for some specs today and have set one with 4 gig of ram, and a 320
hard drive, 13 in screen. again this is just a possiblity.
i will also have the word processor included. i will also have the one-to-one
training as there is a nearby apple store in chicago.
i am curious as to what those of you who own macs have done about your other
windows based adatpive equipment, duxbury, openbook or k1000 and hw stream
companion? how easy is it to move ms word 2003 2007 docs over to apple macs,
still keep the formatting or move them back again?
I thought of just keeping my netbook or sony  machine for these purposes. there
was also the idea given to me that i could have windows on one side and the mac
on the other side. any thoughts on these questions would be apprciated.

Hello Ricardo,

I have to deal with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents in my work as a
translator, but I find that iWork09 copes with all this adequately for my
purposes. There are a few minor problems exporting Word documents to Pages, but
I rarely encounter them.

In any case, my editors are grateful for good translations and don't mind
moving around the occasional misplaced text box.

Re: new member

2010-04-14 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Denise,

I hope the word processor you are thinking of getting is iWork09, since MS
Office for Mac is not accessible.

As for Word documents of almost any level, TextEdit or Pages will read these
just fine.

I can't answer any of your other questions having never been a Windows user.

Cheers,

Anne

2010-04-14 Thread Rob
Okay. Someone said that, for the best A.T. training experience, I
should get both a PC running Windows, AND a Mac. What is the
difference between that, and dual booting a Mac with both Snow
Leopard, and Windows 7? I don't see any difference, and feel dual
booting a Mac would be a more cost-effective solution. I plan to get a
masters in A.T. So, what say ye, fellow Mac Visonaries?

Re: new member

2010-04-14 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

Can I say beautiful, new Macbook Pros 15-17 inch? I can. Speedy! I want to buy
one. Why is it that no one buys Macbooks anymore, but always goes for the Pro?
That has always confused me.

Well, actually, you can work fine with Word documents even in Text Edit, which
is the default word processor on the Mac.

I really just dumped my Windows-based equipment, or sold it to those who wanted
it. I found the Mac already had what I needed. I do, however, occasionally run
Windows alongside but that's for no purpose but to game a little.

Re: Curious

2010-04-14 Thread James & Nash
The only thing with Dual booting is that you don't get the full experience. 2GB
of RAM on a Mac is not - I repeat not the same as having 2GB of RAM on a
Windows machine. The Mac and Windows utilise them differently.

Hi.
I think you are running into the same problem I am too. If the Options
key is held down when you launch iTunes, it will prompt you to choose
a library. This is a built-in feature of iTunes. If you try to launch

itunes and option key

I just tried launching itunes with the keypad commander, but made sure to
release the option key. It launched without a problem. Thanks so much for
pointing out the option key thing.

2010-04-14 Thread mani
Linda:
For the word at a time, I think you will need to interact with the
item in question using VO+Shift+Down Arrow. At some point of time ,
it starts interacting with a word at a time. Then you move through
the words with a VO + Right Arrow. I am not sure how you would do a
line.

You will do perfectly fine with the Mac only.

Re: sluggish safari

When this happened to me in October, it turned out that I needed a new logic

DAISY player for the Mac

2010-04-14 Thread Rob Lambert
I've tried Olearia, Emerson, and ReadHear. Of those three, ReadHear is the
only one to play my Bookshare books. I love Olearia for it's ease of use,
and I'd like to try to get that to work. When I open the book (and it's the
folder with the book title on it), it said that it can't play it. However,
when I play the user's guide for my Book Sense, it plays fine. Anyone got
any answers to this one? I'd like to avoid paying for something if I can.
Readhear is capable, but not only is it pricey at $250, but I don't like the
User interface, as much as I do olearia. Thanks.

What do you think?

2010-04-14 Thread Rob Lambert
I just got wind, from a friend of mine, that the only reason Apple is
accessible to us is because of a lawsuit by the NFB. The term of the
agreement was for accessibility improvements for three years. Here's a
question. First, what's your side of this ordeal? Second, who thinks Apple
will keep up with the accessibility improvements after this three year term
is up? I apologize for making smooth waters mirky, I just wanted to know
what your take on this was.
