Re: Additional help needed with Reading line by line

2010-02-05 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Linda,

First of all, there are two ways of navigating websites: DOM and Groups. I have
set a hot key in Keyboard Commander to switch between these modes as I prefer
Groups mode in general, but DOM mode for reading articles straight through.

DOM mode only allows you to move left and right, but Groups mode lets you move
in all directions. Groups mode collects items together into Groups like
paragraphs. You can interact with a group to examine what's inside more
closely. It all depends on how a website is coded as to whether you can read
line by line.

Now for Quick Nav. Turn Quick Nav on by pressing the left and right arrows at
the same time smartly.
Interact with an item by pressing the right and down arrows together.
Stop interacting by pressing the down and left arrows together.
Perform the default action by pressing the up and down arrows together.
Change the rotor setting by pressing the left and up arrows or right and up
arrows together. The rotor affects the behaviour of the up and down arrows
alone. The choices are Navigation, Words and Characters.

I find Quick Nav extremely useful and use it frequently.

I hope this clarifies matters for you.

Cheers,

Anne

2010-02-05 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

Just a correction. DOM mode will actually allow you to move up and down as well
if only using the arrow keys. However, I didn't suggest Group mode because I
figured she was using the default settings. The solution in DOM mode is kind of
flaky, though. It seems to work for the most part, including selecting lines
from webpages. But that's not always doable in some instances, but sometimes it
is on exactly the same webpages it was unavailable previously. I find this a
strange symptom.

Re: Additional help needed with Reading line by line

2010-02-05 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Nic,

DOM mode doesn't allow me to do anything when just using the arrow keys except
when Quick Nav is on, and in that case, the up and down arrows perform the
action selected using the rotor (links, headers, etc.). I suppose if there's a
table it's possible to move up and down.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi,

Nope. I've done it when reading articles containing no tables, as well. Try
Google. It works there, too. :). The way it's done is a bit different for sure,
but it's line by line if you're at the beginning of a line when you use this
method. You'll see what I mean when I say it's a bit flaky.

Repairing permissions, should I close all apps?

2010-02-05 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi everyone. If you are having problems with your system and you want to
repair permissions to try and fix them, is it necessary to close all apps
first? I noticed that last time I repaired permissions, it did fix a bad
Safari problem, but when I looked at the log, it showed that certain files were
not able to be opened or something like that. I'm going to try repairing
permissions again just as a routine maintenance thing, but this time maybe I
would turn Voiceover off first? I just wanted to know what you all thought. I
don't exactly understand what repairing permissions does, but I noticed that
when I had to force quit Safari because it was acting up on several occasions,
I repaired permissions and it made Safari like new again, so it does indeed
work sometimes.

I crashed the new iTunes already this morning, so thought I'd repair
permissions just to make sure things were on the right track for this new
version.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

2010-02-05 Thread James & Nash
Hi Lynn,

I am not an expert, but I tend to close all applications when repairing
permissions except for VO, as I have no other way of knowing if the process has
finished. But perhaps I will and then give it around 10 minutes. Of course, it
will take longer if you don't do it often.

I also repair Permissions before and after a Software Update and sometimes
after installing new software.

Hope this helps

Hello Lynn and all:

Hahaha. The challenge of lists like these you will get two answers
which are conflicting (smile).

Your question was ... is it necessary? No, it is not absolutely
necessary. Is it a good idea? If it limits the confusion that may
result from apps being open then by all means close them all so you
only have to keep track of the one activity.

And, if it assists in providing you with a little piece of mind ...
good heavens close them and run permissions.

Not a black and white answer I know though somehow I get the feeling
this is the answer which will produce the best results (grin).

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Re: Repairing permissions, should I close all apps?

2010-02-05 Thread Donna Goodin
Hmm. I haven't repaired permissions since some time last summer. I've been
experiencing some pretty flaky behavior, so this post is making me think that
perhaps I should do it again. Can someone refresh me briefly on how to do this?
TIA,
Donna

Re: Repairing permissions, should I close all apps?

2010-02-05 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Donna,

To repair permissions:
• Go to Utilities (Command-Shift-u);
• Select and open Disk Utility, typing "dis" will get you straight to it;
• Select your HD in the table;
• Select First Aid which is the first tab;
• Select Repair Disk Permissions.

It takes around ten minutes but you can keep track of what it thinks is the
time remaining.

There's no need to turn VO off since VO isn't really an application.

You should always repair permissions after an update or after installing new
software.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi,

As another note, when it says "Warning (insert a lot of stuff here) This has

"Don't worry about it". So I don't. :)

I don't know if there's something I'm not doing, but the Numbers application

very confusing.

Has anyone else noticed this? Does anyone have any tips for using Numbers?

Re: a couple of Safari questions--bookmarks top sites and tool bars

2010-02-05 Thread Esther

Hi Chris,

Chris Hofstader wrote:

How does one keep the top sites bar from showing up? I can usually
get it to go away but it seems to return randomly.

You can keep the top sites bar from showing up by de-selecting this
under the Bookmarks options of your Safari preferences.

1. Press Command-comma to bring up the preferences menu
2. Interact with the toolbar (VO-Shift-Down arrow) and navigate (tab
or VO-Right arrow) to the "Bookmarks" button

3. Press (VO-Space) the "Bookmarks" button
4. Tab to the Bookmarks preference options. There are checkboxes that
allow you to configure what appears in your Bookmarks menu and
Bookmarks bar.
5. Navigate (VO-Right arrow) to the "Include Top Sites" entry and
uncheck it (VO-Space).

6. Close the preferences window (Command-W).

HTH

Also, as an addendum to Robert's question about getting bookmarks from
the Top Sites menu. Apparently, bookmarking a web site (with Command-
D) simply adds a site to the Top Sites entries, but doesn't create a
separate bookmark entry in the list on the page where you show
bookmarks with Command-Option-B. To move sites that you bookmarked
under "Top SItes" to the regular bookmarks categories or folders
you'll have to navigate to these pages and then bookmark them again
(e.g., use Command-Option-1 to navigate to "Top Sites", interact, then
navigate through the list using VO-Space to select each site, set a
bookmark with Command-D, go back to "Top SItes" page with Command-
[ and VO-Right arrow to the next top site page, VO-Space to select,
bookmark with Command-D, etc.)

Cheers,

Esther

Hope that helps.

Function (which is the bottom-left most key on the whole keyboard layout) and
the arrow keys makes up/down into PageUp and PageDown while left becomes Home
and right becomes End.

  Hope that helps.

Hi,

They actually don't do anything unless you use them with another combination,
or so I've found. Try turning on keyboard help. They're the right keys.

Re: question about home, end, page up page down

2010-02-05 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi, This is because on their own they really don't do anything on the mac.

For example, in windows, home takes you to the beginning of a line in an edit
field, and end takes you to the end of the line.

In the mac world, control left arrow takes you to the beginning of the line and
control right arrow takes you to the end.

Some one will have to enlighten us on the placement of the next and previous
page and top and bottom of document commands. unfortunately they are escaping

IPod touch voiceover question

2010-02-05 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi
I'm new to this list and have a question.
Is it possible to delete a podcast from the IPod touch using voice over? I
know I can do it from the PC, but the manual says you can do it from the
IPod too. It says you have to wipe left or right over the name and then
press the delete button. I can't find a delete button and even wiping
doesn't work. It may not be possible using voiceover.
I'm relatively new to the Ipod Touch but would be grateful for any ideas.
Many thanks.

Lisette

Movement keys, especially on laptops [was Re: question about home, end, page up page down]

2010-02-05 Thread Esther

Hi Carolyn,

It's much easier to illustrate how to use these keystrokes on the
MacBook Pro by taking a practical example of where documentation
references "Home" and "End". Let's assume that you've read about
movement commands because you want to navigate to the top or bottom of
a list. This could, for instance, be the messages table in Mail,
because you want to move to the most recent message. Or, perhaps you
ran a search of messages on a certain topic by pressing Command-Option-
F to move to the search field, then typed in search terms like
"bookmarks" or "smart playlists", and then tabbed to the messages
table and you now want to read through the entries starting with the
earliest message. At this point, after interacting (VO-Shift-Down
arrow) with the messages table, you read that VO-Home takes you to the
beginning of the table and VO-End takes you to the end of the table.
On your MacBook Pro you would press VO-Fn-Shift-Left Arrow in place of
VO-Home to move to the beginning of the table and VO-Fn-Shift-Right
Arrow in place of VO-End to move to the end of the table.

These movement commands really do move to the start and end of the
table -- for example, if you want to read the names of senders or the
subject or date of the message you'll need to use VO-Right arrow or VO-
Left arrow to move back to one of these columns, since VO-Fn-Shift-
Right arrow moves focus to the last column of the last row of your
displayed table and VO-Fn-Shift-Left arrow moves focus to the first
column of the first row of your displayed table.

Another thing that I find useful in mail when I want to read up or
down a subject thread, but have my messages ordered by date, rather
than by thread, is pressing Option-Up arrow or Option-Down arrow to
read previous or next messages in the thread.

Navigation within documents is a little different, since you don't
have a table structure. In that case you can, indeed, as James
advises, use Command-Up arrow to move to the top of the document and
Command-Down arrow to move to the bottom of a document.

Here's a link to one of the archived list posts on shortcut sequences
for movement and selection that work in any of Mac's Cocoa apps
(TextEdit, Mail, etc. -- most of the apps you use). These are Mac OS
X specific:

http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg02038.html
("Moving and Selecting in Cocoa Apps")

(there's one typo where "select to beginning of document" appears
twice -- my bad for being sloppy with cut and paste, but it's obvious
that the second case is meant to be "select to end of document")

Also, the example I gave for moving to the top or bottom of the mail
messages table can also easily be used for the songs table of iTunes,
in exactly the same way (in combination with search, if needed, with
exactly the same shortcut sequence of Command-Option-F to go to the
search text field). This pattern also works for Finder, if I run a
search in list view. In general, you may also want to navigate within
the table to specific columns with VO-Right arrow or VO-Left arrow,
and you might resort your results in each column with VO-Backslash,
where "backslash" is the key at the rightmost key on English input
keyboards, just below the delete key and above the return key. (On
non-English input keyboards you may need to bring up the Commands menu
with VO-H twice, and look for the "Sort" option.) In the mail
messages example, I might have wanted to do this to reorder replies
according to the name of a sender, or by subject thread. Each time VO-
Backslash is applied the sort order of that column will invert between
ascending and descending sort order. Make sure that you return your
sort to your preferred setting (e.g. "date received") when you're done.

HTH. If you have a particular context in mind for using these keys,
just ask.

Cheers,

Esther

Some one will have to enlighten us on the placement of the next and

Yeah,

It is something apple really needs to fix. It works in dom mode but, only when
it feels like working. lol. I noticed if I load a page and try to use the
arrows it might not work, then I get up to get a glass of water and bam! it's
working. Maybe its saving the content of the page into some kind of temporary
memory to use this option of using the arrows to navigate. Who knows. But if
this thing worked like it was suppose to, it would make selecting text so much
easier..

O'Reilly (DRM-free) Ebook Deal of the Day RSS feed

2010-02-05 Thread Esther

Hi,

This post will mainly be of interest to programmers and information
technology folks who might use O'Reilly's publications. Each day,
their RSS feed will offer one of their current releases in DRM-free,
multiple eBook formats: PDF, ePub, Mobi, and APK (Android) file
formats for $9.99 with a coupon code for checkout good for that day.
You get access to all of these formats in your account library, so you
can read the text in PDF on your Mac, and at some later time if the
iBookstore's app provides a general purpose reader, the ePub format
will also be readable on that device. (And if Stanza ever irons out
the VoiceOver accessibility bugs, you'll be able to read the ePub
versions through their iPhone app uploaded through Stanza Desktop; at
present you can sort of do this but the reading really limps along
since you have to touch every page to read it.)

From O'Reilly's email announcement: "When you buy an ebook through
oreilly.com, you get lifetime access to the book, and whenever
possible we provide it to you in four, DRM-free file formats —
PDF, .epub, Kindle-compatible .mobi, and Android .apk — that you can
use on the devices of your choice. Our ebook files are fully
searchable, and you can cut-and-paste and print them. We also alert
you when we've updated the files with corrections and additions."

At present (for some time), they've been running a "Buy 2 books, get
the 3rd Free" promo using the discount code: OPC10 at checkout.

Most of these titles are technical in nature, but might be of interest
to some list members. As an example, Monday's Ebook deal (posted a
few days before I received their announcement) was: "Building iPhone
Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript".

A few days before that, the Ebook deal of the day was: "Switching to
the Mac: The Missing Manual, Leopard Edition".

O'Reilly makes their books available internationally through
Bookshare, but this program is generally available, does not require
Bookshare membership (which costs more for international users),
releases the books in other formats, and releases the latest titles
right away.

For more information about O'Reilly's Ebook offerings, check their web
page:

http://oreilly.com/ebooks/

The O'Reilly Ebook Deal of the Day RSS feed is:
feed://feeds.feedburner.com/oreilly/ebookdealoftheday

Today's Ebook deal is: "Making Things Talk: Practical Methods for
Connecting Physical Objects" (note this is not about "talking" as in
text to speech).

HTH

Cheers,

Esther

Re: question about home, end, page up page down

2010-02-05 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

That's the method I use. I only said it didn't work because I couldn't get it
to work. According to the manual, you can hit Home or End to jump to the
beginning or end, but nothing happens on my end. Of course, it is always
possible I somehow misread what the manual said. That's why I was curious to
the claim of the manual. I always use VO-FN-Shift-left or right arrow for the
most part anyway, but sometimes I don't even find myself interacting in a
document in particular so I use command-Up or down mostly.

Function (which is the bottom-left most key on the whole keyboard layout)
and the arrow keys makes up/down into PageUp and PageDown while left
becomes Home and right becomes End.

 Hope that helps.

RE: Additional help needed with Reading line by line

2010-02-05 Thread Linda Adams
Nic and Anne,

Thanks for the additional information on reading web pages line by line
and using Quick Nav. I haven't experimented with switching between DOM
and Group modes yet to see the difference. Am I right in assuming that
DOM is the default mode?

So I'm going to check out the difference in the two modes and practice
using Quick Nav.

Hi,

Just a correction. DOM mode will actually allow you to move up and down
as well if only using the arrow keys. However, I didn't suggest Group
mode because I figured she was using the default settings. The solution
in DOM mode is kind of flaky, though. It seems to work for the most
part, including selecting lines from webpages. But that's not always
doable in some instances, but sometimes it is on exactly the same
webpages it was unavailable previously. I find this a strange symptom.

Ok this is really weird, but If I have *not* done any moving around with
voiceover, Function Left does put the screen focus on message headers, and then
Function+right arrow puts it at the end. As soon as I move around with VO this
stops working. I don't get it. And, since I've got some vision, doing these
movements without VO on and the Zoom on does the same thing. Hope this makes
sense. I wonder if having VO turned on has any effect on it? Also, I can't
get it to duplicate this behavior when replying to a message. Shucks, trying to
help and now got myself confused in the process lol.

A question about max and musicbrainz

2010-02-05 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi all.

Now I have succeded in setting up max, so that I can rip cd's in the
quality I want. I am not using ITunes for that, because I can not get
the quality I want, I think it is a voiceover problem, but it is not
solved in the last version of ITunes either. So I try to use max
instead, I am in a way very saticefied with that, but I have a
problem, The program is using musicbrainz, and I can not find my cd's
on that database, can I use another database instead and which? and
which information do I need, if I can use another database?

I hope somebody can help.

Best regards Annie.

airfoil and soundflower

2010-02-05 Thread Mary Otten
Hi All,
I finally have my airport express connected to a stereo. Set up was a snap. So
I can use airfoil to send from various audio sources on the Mac to the stereo.
From reading about sound flower, I got the idea that I might be able to operate
the Mac with a bluetooth keyboard, assuming the keyboard and Mac still saw each
other, and listen to the vo output through airfoil speakers with airfoil
transmitting the audio via sound flower rather than the default of system
audio. So, I just tried changing to sound flower in the table in air foil
preferences, and I get no audio from air foil now. Obviously, I'm missing
something or more than one thing here. Can anybody advise whether what I'm
trying to do with sound flower is possible? I'm not worried bout the bluetooth
at this point. I just want to see if I can get vo audio to somewhere via
airfoil through airfoil speakers.

  Hi Carolyn,

It's much easier to illustrate how to use these keystrokes on the MacBook Pro
by taking a practical example of where documentation references "Home" and
"End". Let's assume that you've read about movement commands because you want
to navigate to the top or bottom of a list. This could, for instance, be the
messages table in Mail, because you want to move to the most recent message.
Or, perhaps you ran a search of messages on a certain topic by pressing
Command-Option-F to move to the search field, then typed in search terms like
"bookmarks" or "smart playlists", and then tabbed to the messages table and you
now want to read through the entries starting with the earliest message. At
this point, after interacting (VO-Shift-Down arrow) with the messages table,
you read that VO-Home takes you to the beginning of the table and VO-End takes
you to the end of the table. On your MacBook Pro you would press
VO-Fn-Shift-Left Arrow in place of VO-Home to move to the beginning of the
table and VO-Fn-Shift-Right Arrow in place of VO-End to move to the end of the
table.

These movement commands really do move to the start and end of the table --
for example, if you want to read the names of senders or the subject or date of
the message you'll need to use VO-Right arrow or VO-Left arrow to move back to
one of these columns, since VO-Fn-Shift-Right arrow moves focus to the last
column of the last row of your displayed table and VO-Fn-Shift-Left arrow moves
focus to the first column of the first row of your displayed table.

Another thing that I find useful in mail when I want to read up or down a
subject thread, but have my messages ordered by date, rather than by thread, is
pressing Option-Up arrow or Option-Down arrow to read previous or next messages
in the thread.

Navigation within documents is a little different, since you don't have a
table structure. In that case you can, indeed, as James advises, use
Command-Up arrow to move to the top of the document and Command-Down arrow to
move to the bottom of a document.

Here's a link to one of the archived list posts on shortcut sequences for
movement and selection that work in any of Mac's Cocoa apps (TextEdit, Mail,
etc. -- most of the apps you use). These are Mac OS X specific:

  http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg02038.html
("Moving and Selecting in Cocoa Apps")

(there's one typo where "select to beginning of document" appears twice -- my
bad for being sloppy with cut and paste, but it's obvious that the second case
is meant to be "select to end of document")

Also, the example I gave for moving to the top or bottom of the mail messages
table can also easily be used for the songs table of iTunes, in exactly the
same way (in combination with search, if needed, with exactly the same shortcut
sequence of Command-Option-F to go to the search text field). This pattern
also works for Finder, if I run a search in list view. In general, you may
also want to navigate within the table to specific columns with VO-Right arrow
or VO-Left arrow, and you might resort your results in each column with
VO-Backslash, where "backslash" is the key at the rightmost key on English
input keyboards, just below the delete key and above the return key. (On
non-English input keyboards you may need to bring up the Commands menu with
VO-H twice, and look for the "Sort" option.) In the mail messages example, I
might have wanted to do this to reorder replies according to the name of a
sender, or by subject thread. Each time VO-Backslash is applied the sort order
of that column will invert between ascending and descending sort order. Make
sure that you return your sort to your preferred setting (e.g. "date received")
when you're done.

HTH. If you have a particular context in mind for using these keys, just ask.

  Cheers,

  Esther

Some one will have to enlighten us on the placement of the next and

Re: Movement keys, especially on laptops [was Re: question about home, end, page up page down]

2010-02-05 Thread Esther
Hi Carolyn,

You're too kind about these comments -- especially since I realize that I
mistyped the sort command (aargh!) -- which is VO-Shift-backslash (not
VO-backslash, which expands and collapses folders). It just goes to show that
muscle memory doesn't always translate to what I'm typing. (It used to be that
my most common typing error would be saying "interact" and then I would leave
out typing the Shift key in my instructions and this would come out as VO-Down
arrow instead of VO-Shift Down arrow; at least I'm consistent…). Just look
upon this as the incomplete construction (smile).

Seriously, I do find it easier to learn the movement and selection commands
together (using the Command key as part of the sequence).

Let me know if anything I posted doesn't work -- it's probably another typo!

Cheers,

Esther

You can create your own ring tones for the iPhone. I can research the

Re: airfoil and soundflower

2010-02-05 Thread Darcy Burnard
Hi Mary. The way to make this work is to have airfoil transmit the system
audio to your airport express. This should be the last option in your airfoil
sources list. You do need to have sound flower installed, but this isn't the
option you pick, system audio is what you want.
I really wouldn't recommend doing this however. I just tried it to make sure
it worked. It does, but there is a second and a half time lag between when you
press something, and when you hear VO through the airport.
HTH.
