Help! - can no longer empty my trash!

2010-01-05 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi there.
I've got quite many objects in my trash that i want to get rid of, amongst
those old time machine objects and such. The reason why i want to erase all
this is to start doing backups with another application namely Carbon copy
cloner. Problem is, when i try emptying the trash, a dialog pops up informing
me that the task couldn't be completed because an unexpected error occurred and
then an error code -8003. What's going on here and what can i do about it?

Hi Matt,
I was really looking forward to auto web spots as a sort of quick and dirty way
of having the best of group nav but still being in dom mode, if that makes any
sense. I've found, however, that the auto web spots on the pages I've tried are
really not helpful. Must be just the sites I visit, mostly news sites like my
local paper or others with compilations of articles. Of course, one can set web
spots, like place markers on the Windows side of things. That's one I never got
in to in Windows and haven't as yet on the Mac either.

Hi Mary,

I saw it in the manual. Although the keyboard help feature is nice, not all
the keys appear to be listed. Do you read braille? If so, you can get a VO
Users Manual in braille from Lighthouse International in San Francisco. You
likely saw this, but VO Comand_N may actually work better for what you want.
Those who mentioned VO J will only go from link to link with that command. I
know exactly what you're looking for, as I use that feature all of the time
with Jaws and Window-Eyes! Anyway, I'll try either VO Command P or N now and
see which works better overall.

wild idea?

2010-01-05 Thread Mary Otten
Hi folks,
When I bought my Mac mini recently, I purchased a bluetooth keyboard with it,
because it was the best keyboard they had in the store, in terms of the over
all feel etc. Its nice not being tied to a desk, but it would be really cool if
it would be possible to take this keyboard into another room and control the
Mac from there. Clearly, this would require the ability to listen to the vo
output through a set of speakers or, better, through an existing stereo. Does
anybody know of some sort of device that one could connect to the computer that
will "broadcast" the output from the sound card, so to speak, perhaps a
bluetooth or rf device whose receiver plugs into the line in on your stereo? I
have no clue if there would be a market for such a thing, especially since
there is Itunes with the Ipod as remote. But that doesn't let you control the
Mac, just Itunes.

For about $300 you could go with this which starts with a 1km antenna
but you can get optional antennas for up to 30km range.

Of course you might have to do a little dev work to get it set up since

Re: wild idea?

2010-01-05 Thread Scott Howell
Well you certainly could use a bluetooth headset, which would work reasonably
well if your not to far from the source. You also could for about $100 purchase
an AirPort Express and purchase a program such as Airfoil from Rogue Omeeba and
stream audio to a stereo etc. wirelessly. Now it has been a while since I tried
this, but I'm pretty certain it worked, but I haven't the express any longer
since I sent it to a friend. There are other low-tech solutions like running a
cable from the Mac to a receiver or whatever source you can plug into. So,
hopefully that provides you some ideas.

Re: Problem with Authentication

2010-01-05 Thread Chris Blouch
This is correct. You can break into any mac and resent passwords simply
by booting off the installer DVD. That said, I'm not as clear on what
happens when you either have FileVault or an encrypted disk image in
use. In the end there is always a security - usability tradeoff.
Somebody would need physical access to your machine to break into it.
You mac is not a vault.

I think you can fix this if you use your installation DVD. After
booting from the DVD and passing the Language selection screen, you
can find a Password Reset or Recovery function in the Utilities

Hi Mary, well it looks like peeps have already suggested the bluetooth
headset idea, but have you considered a simple FM transmitter?

You can find very low-cost transmitters that should have no trouble
transmitting from room to room, so you could send all your sound from your mini
to a stereo.

HTH and have a terrific day!…

Re: wild idea?

2010-01-05 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks for all the ideas. I think airfoil looks interesting, although its not
the cheapest way to go. Oddly enough, my stereo has no fm tuner, the old one I
had having broken, and commercial programming being so devoid of meaningful
content that I never replaced it. So I suppose the transmitter idea won't work
I had one of those little transmitters several years ago, and it was pretty
cool. But of course, then, there weren't bluetooth keyboards, so you couldn't
control the source of the audio remotely.

LOL Well, I totally get what you're saying. When my sister-in-law
first tried to talk me into playing, I was like "whatever for!?" But
I have to confess that it's kind of intriguing me now that I've been
playing around with it. It probably helps to have friends who are
playing.

Anyway, I wrote to Zynga and asked them to look into it, so if there
are any other frustrated Wanna-be FarmVille players out there, you
might want to write them too. I figure the more of us who ask, the
more likely they'll do something.

Hmm, not surprised. Palm doesn't seem to be paying much attention to
accessibility.

I've tried Stanza, Read2Me and Kobo. Kobo is the best, Read2Me is
good but you can't adjust the voice speed unless you use the built-
in voice, in which case you can't pause and resume. This isn't too
drastic as the app divides books into fairly small chunks, however,
these breaks frequently come in the middle of a sentence. Stanza is
awkward to use as you have to turn VoiceOver off to turn pages,
then turn it back on again.

My tab key seems to only find the links, no other elements or text on the page.
Maybe I can set it up so it behaves a bit differently this way. thanks.

I use the item chooser a whole lot. I also use vo/left and right arrows and
vo/a to read text. It works very nicely for me. I browse links with the tab
key if I don't have a specific thing in mind to look for with the item chooser.
Occasionally I use the web rodor, but not that much.

Re: Save attachments from Mail messages as a service

2010-01-05 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux
I have an example for this, though it is for moving files to folders, but when
you get into automator you can change the paremeters to make it a mail
attachement to folder.

If i have the time i will translate it, but i'll paste the french version here:

Re: Appending text to clipboard

2010-01-05 Thread Esther

Hi,

On Dec 28, 2009, VaShaun Jones wrote:

know of a way to do it on the Mac or do you know of a third party

QuickSilver, the application that Yvonne described in her blog at:
http://yvonnezed.posterous.com/
supports this capability, but as I believe she mentioned in her posts,
you may not be able to get all of this working in Snow Leopard. What
I've been using instead of the clipboard with some of the same
functionality that you want is a free software application called
JustNotes (in its beta release) that synchronizes notes with an iPhone/
iPod Touch app called Simplenote ($1.99). This also automatically
puts the notes up on my iPod Touch within the Simplenote app, and lets
me access current, updated versions of the notes through the free
Simplenote secure web interface. This is also a great way of getting
content up to my iPod Touch (if I want to cut and paste in any of the
text I loaded up as notes). (As an aside, the Simplenote app also lets
me use another iPhone app called TextExpander (normally $4.99, but
currently $1.99). This app lets me customize "snippets" that minimize
my typing, and that can automatically expand to the currently
formatted date, etc.).

You can read more about Simplenote and JustNotes in this TUAW article
about Simplenote that gives links to these and other apps:

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/12/21/elegant-simplicity-the-power-of-simplenote-for-iphone/
("Elegant simplicity: the power of SimpleNote for iPhone" by Steven
Sande, Dec 21st 2009)

Note: I installed JustNotes because I already had Simplenote. If you
install JustNotes first and later decide to get Simplenote I'm not
sure whether the automatic synchronization will work correctly without
some fiddling. Simplenote gives you free access to a Simplenote secure
web account that lets you sync notes in the web account immediately
with your notes on the iPhone/iPod Touch. JustNotes has you enter
this when your set it up, since the application for the Mac desktop
was inspired by the way that Simplenote works with the web account.
The small, floating JustNotes window currently shows up in the window
chooser menu for Finder (VO-F2 twice) as "untitled". If you're using
DropBox, this means that you might see two windows labelled "untitled".

• Simplenote ($1.99) by Codality:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/simplenote/id289429962?mt=8
• JustNotes (for the Mac, free and in beta) by SelfCoded:
http://selfcoded.com/justnotes/

Check the TUAW article for other links.

HTH

Cheers,

Esther
