This is correct. You can break into any mac and resent passwords simply by booting off the installer DVD. That said, I'm not as clear on what happens when you either have FileVault or an encrypted disk image in use. In the end there is always a security - usability tradeoff. Somebody would need physical access to your machine to break into it. You mac is not a vault.

If I am reading this, as it seams, I do not know why we even bother with "passwords" and encoding", for all we need to break in is a "copy or retail disk", or am I missing something?

I presume for security, it must be the "actual disk" you used with
the setting up of the machine, and not just any "installation disk".

I think you can fix this if you use your installation DVD. After
booting from the DVD and passing the Language selection screen, you
can find a Password Reset or Recovery function in the Utilities menu.
