Are you talking about middle-click paste? It works for me with 2.3.1.

If you make a minimal example .lyx file (please read [1]), and post it
to the list, it might be easier for people to jump in and try to figure
out the problem.

Hi Klaus,

Thanks for your concern. I don't think there is any other way, except to
use one of those stand-alone "website watchers" (I don't have any to
recommend) that check if there have been any changes to a page.

My opinion is that you should feel free to CC yourself on any ticket
without worrying about notifications. I have no idea if others feel the
same way.

You can call the configure script directly. For example,

  python -tt "/usr/local/share/lyx/configure.py"

Be sure to run it inside your home directory. On Linux, this is ~/.lyx.
(note that you can set your home directory at run-time to any directory
when launching LyX)

The reason why this question is so important is that it would really
help us to have a minimal example file. Without an example file, it is
quite difficult to track down the problem since we can't reproduce it.
If you're not sure what "buffer-anonymize" is, please let us know and we
can give you instructions for how to use it.

I see, thanks for the explanation. buffer-anonymize basically replaces
all of your characters with the character "a", in order to remove the
sensitive information. Are the pictures necessary to reproduce the
problem?

Strange. It does not crash for me with LyX 2.3.x. Does it matter whether
you have continuous spell-checking enabled or not?

What makes you think that? I know little about these low-level issues so
I'm always trying to learn more intuition. If it is indeed due to a
memory link, perhaps Valgrind would be helpful?

Nice. Thanks for sharing I actually never saw that trick for saving the
directory in a bash function (I've only used pushd and popd
interactively). I am used to saving "$(pwd)" to a variable and then "cd"
back to it. I like your trick instead.

Do all of the crash issues you see require you to use a private
document? Did you try buffer-anonymize? It might not help since this
issue is related to spell-checking, but it's worth a try.

If you can find a way to get a crash from a document you can share,
please let us know. It might be a while before we figure out a fix to
the other bug (since we don't have a document to reproduce).

I'm not sure I have seen such a report. It is hard to know how to
diagnose the problem. When you see the sluggishness, are you by chance
working on a file that is in a Dropbox folder and you have automatic
save set to a high frequency? That's just a random guess. We have seen
some problems from users with both Windows and Dropbox.

I think I've heard this issue reported a few times. I don't know
anything about this (I'm on Ubuntu). Hopefully we can figure out the
root cause with Adobe Acrobat and fix that, but just in case it helps,
many users have reported success using Sumatra PDF view.

It's been a long time since I've made a custom converter, so I don't
know off-hand.

Does it do what you want if you remove "latex=pdflatex" in the converter
flag for the converter LaTeX (pdflatex) -> PDF (pdflatex)? (if you use
something other than pdfLaTeX, adapt accordingly).

I also can't reproduce. I'm on Ubuntu (default GNOME) 19.04 with system
Qt 5.12.2. I self-compiled LyX though. I can test tomorrow on the Ubuntu
version from the repository, if that would help.

How did you get LyX? From the Ubuntu repository or self-compiled or PPA?

update the PPA.

Maria, if you are by chance interested in compiling LyX, start a
separate email thread and we can help you get it set up. This way, if
you are interested, you could use the 2.3.x branch, which is a
development version (i.e., updated every day), but is quite stable and
is what most developers use for daily work (I believe). I know this was
not the suggestion you were looking for, but I offer it nonetheless.

Is putting each of your child documents in a separate branch a
possibility? That way you could use the solution you found. I'm not
aware of a different approach (maybe someone else knows though).

Maybe if you edit the .lyx file with a text editor (which I don't
recommend). I think the feature you're hoping for (which doesn't exist
yet) would be a layout tag that specifies which layouts can be converted
to other layouts.

Improvement for tooltip of "Save as Document Defaults"

The current tooltip says the following:

  Save settings as LyX's default document settings

One LyX user was confused and thought this meant that these document
settings would be used for all .lyx files (e.g., existing ones as well).
This made me think we should clarify as follows:

  Save settings as LyX's default document settings for new documents

But now it's getting a little long. How about the following?

  Save settings as the defaults for new documents

Any comments or alternative proposals?

Hi Bernt,

You can try this LyX template:

  https://github.com/scottkosty/lyx-princeton-diss

It shows how each chapter can have its own appendix and own list of
references. From what I remember, it uses some hacks, so if you find
something else you might want to go with that.

When you run pdflatex manually on LaTeX code produced by LyX,
does it have a non-zero exit code?

Can you send a .lyx minimal example file that reproduces the error?

Thanks for the example file. As you probably expected, it compiles fine
on my computer (although it was good to check). 

How did you install LyX? Did you install it from the Ubuntu repository,
or a PPA, or did you manually compile?

When you do the export, do you get an error dialog? What does the
message pane say right after doing the export?

The line about the assertion in your output means that LyX did not
detect an error when exporting but at the same time there is no export
file. So LyX is just as confused as we are it seems.

Still I think Kornel picked up on an important clue: we need to figure
out why there's a .dvi file in the temporary directory. If you exit LyX
and start LyX again (which should use a fresh temp dir), and compile a
simple .lyx file, can you confirm that there's a .dvi in the temporary
directory?

In addition to Paul's question, can you send us your preferences file?
It is a text file and you can find its location by going to Help > About
and looking in the "User directory" path that is listed there.

Thanks for the report, Paul. Can you post the output from reconfiguring
LyX? It seems that we check to see if your TeX installation allows
spaces or not while reconfiguring. (if interested in seeing the source
code, grep for 'tex_allows_spaces'). As for why the change, it could be
because when you installed 2.3.4.2 you also installed a newer version of
your TeX distribution. Or it could be a code change in LyX, but since I
can't reproduce it's hard to know.

Maybe you will get helpful output if when you start LyX on the command
line you use "-dbg". For example:

  lyx -dbg any

should give a lot of output. Perhaps there's a better flag to choose.

Indeed, it is difficult and frustrating to transition to a new way of
doing things. You might just want to stick with an older version of LyX
until you have the time and energy to deal with the transition and to
read Help > Specific Manuals > Beamer Presentations.

If you send us a minimal example, and describe exactly what you would
like to achieve as the end goal, we can tell you the "new" way of doing
things. It's always fun to argue whether the new way of doing things is
better/worse than the old way, but let's separate that discussion from
"how do accomplish things in the new way?".

As for just needing a separator, I'm not sure that manually inserting a
separator is the best way to accomplish what you want to do in the *new*
way of using Beamer in LyX.

I can see why you would expect that. Currently in LyX, from what I
understand, the default output format does not affect non-default
output. If your default output is set to PDF (LuaTeX) and you export to
knitr, LyX thinks "OK they don't want the default output format since
they chose a different output".

However, I do see your point that if LyX had to guess what flavor of TeX
it should write the .Rnw in, choosing the flavor that is in the chain
for the default output format is a good guess.

For me, it does not scroll to the top. It scrolls to the LaTeX output
corresponding to where the cursor is.

Thanks for checking, Kornel. I see that I misread Daniel's message. I
thought he was talking about the LaTeX source preview box. I now see the
same behavior with the LaTeX Log as you and Daniel, that it scrolls to
the top. My guess as to why it happens is that we are taking into
account the possibility that the .log file has changed and so we reload
it. I haven't looked in the code to confirm this guess. If that is
indeed the case, then we would need a better mechanism to see if the log
file has changed.

I agree it is annoying for certain cases. For me it is annoying when I
use knitr. For you, is it purely LaTeX compilation that is taking the
time or something else?

I believe the process is not stopped. Try an experiment: when you get
the dialog, wait 10 more minutes until you're sure your script would
have finished, and then click "let it run"---it should immediately show
the PDF.

That's great the problem seems to be solved. Alexander, would you mind
still filing a bug/enhancement report for Pandoc? Even though the issue
doesn't affect you anymore, it would affect others. I suggest to make a
minimal example .tex file and to post it here:

Looks like the problem is the following:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 sbuild-build-depends-lyx-dummy : Depends: libboost-signals-dev but it is not

Anyone using LyX for quizes on Canvas with math?

[Scott Kostyshak]

There are some resources online about turning LaTeX math into the format used 
on Canvas, but I haven't actually tried anything. Has anyone done this? If so, 
what are the steps you take from getting from LyX to Canvas quiz? Do you use 
the LyX HTML export?

I prefer to export since I want to export the entire exam. That is, I
don't want to use LyX just as an equation editor.

Good idea. I'm hoping to eventually automate the process of cutting them
up into multiple questions. I know there is an API for Canvas so it
might be possible. In any case, I wouldn't be able to get to that for a
while.

Seems like a common workflow and I can see how that would be annoying.

The "much slower" part is surprising to me. It could be a bug in LyX.
Could you please provide a minimal example where it runs much slower?

Not that I know of but I think it's a good idea. We do have the concept
of "no color" and "no language". You make a good argument in my opinion
for something like "no class". A related idea we've discussed before in
different contexts is the idea that child documents could share document
settings of master documents. In this case, you want the child document
to inherit the document class of the master document. This is not
implemented yet, but there are a few different use cases we would want
that general framework.

To expand on this, the idea is not that the document would have actually *no* 
class. But there could be a special class called "basic" or something that only 
has "standard" layout and that does not generate a warning when included in any 
other class that has a standard layout. Something like that.

I don't know if it's relevant, but does LyX work with Wayland's
clipboard? And if it does, is it because there is a compatibility layer?

You mention that you "don't mind it in math mode". If you also don't
mind *not* having it in math, then the solution is simple:

rebind . The default binding is the following:

  "command-alternatives 
completion-accept;cell-forward;tab-insert;outline-in;depth-increment"

Just remove the "completion-accept" part in your rebinding.

If you do want to keep autocompletion for math, then things are more
complicated. I have a simple patch that does this, but you would have to
compile LyX with the patch. If you by chance use Ubuntu, I can compile a
.deb for you, but I can't compile for other platforms.

Just to be clear, I think you mean *automatic* completion is on for

Well shoot, I was hoping it was the opposite---that some deity was doing me a 
favor by trying to help with completion, and all I would have to do is piss 
them off. Gaining their favor seems much more challenging.

Interesting differences. If in preferences you turn automatic completion on for 
text, does that change anything? If not, it might just be that completion in 
text mode is (conveniently) broken for you.

I have a similar annoyance when I open the layout box (with alt + p, ) 
in a read-only document. I remember I spent some time trying to figure out 
where in the code the escape was received and processed (i.e., not processed), 
but failed to make progress.

Hi Matěj,

From what I understand, the reason that things are the way they are in
LyX is that git was added "recently". I'm not sure about adding an
option/preference. In general, we are hesitant to add preferences like
this, and I believe you're the first one to ask for it.

One possibility that *might* satisfy you would be to default to Git if
RCS is not detected on the system. For example, on Linux if the command
"ci" is not available and the command "git" is available, LyX could just
assume Git is intended and can do the setup. However, I'm not sure what
I think of that and I'm not sure what other LyX developers think of
that.

Although I'm also a gitophile, in my opinion the biggest downside to
choosing Git by default and to LyX doing "git init" is that Git can
create lots of files (in its internal .git directory). I do not know if
users would expect this and especially since using Dropbox is so common,
users might be surprised and confused (by Dropbox syncing) from the
creation of so many files.

Makes sense, Rich. I was just thinking it might provide a clue as to
what's going on with the other build. Sometimes different build systems
give different errors. Similar to C++: if I don't understand an error
from GCC, sometimes I compile with Clang.

Beamer: reveal a multi-line math line-by-line?

Is there a way to not have to use full ERT to reveal a multi-line math
line-by-line? This can be accomplished with LaTeX with the following
solution:

but I don't see how I can avoid doing the full align in ERT. Is there
any other easier LyX-friendly solution?

Hi Murat,

Thanks for that example! Are those separate equations (from LyX's
perspective) or is it a multi-line construct? I think they are separate,
which makes sense and gives some flexibility. But it might be difficult
to align things. But perhaps I should not be so picky :)

Attached is an example and with manual \onslide it can be made to work.
I'm not sure if this approach generalizes for other cases, but I think
it will work for me.

I'm not sure if the new requirements are different.

In any case, I don't think the Princeton-specific requirements are
relevant to what you are interested in. You can just look at the .lyx
files for an example of having a separate appendix for each chapter.

There might be a better way in recent versions of LyX to achieve this. I
really don't know.

Hi _johnny7,

In theory this should be possible. When copying, LibreOffice writer appears to 
save two MIME types, plain text (which does not preserve the italics), and HTML 
(which should). LyX can import HTML, so in theory you might be able to go to 
Edit > Paste Special > Paste from HTML. However, I just tested this and it 
didn't work for me. And unfortunately I don't have time to look into why it 
didn't work, but I still write this email just in case anyone else wants to dig 
:)

Note that "Paste from HTML" does not show up in the menu in some cases. In my 
opinion this should be greyed out instead of invisible.

It might work more smoothly if you are willing to export to a .html file and 
then import that from LyX. That's not as convenient as using your system 
clipboard, but it might work better.

Cool idea, Ricardo! This way is better than exporting/importing HTML in the 
sense that you will only get the \emph part formatted. Exporting and importing 
the HTML might give a bunch of different formatting that is not desired.

Hi Barış,

I don't know if it's possible to use that particular key sequence for the 
shortcut. I tried and it doesn't work for me. In case it's still helpful, I can 
tell how to use a different key sequence.

First let's make sure we get the command-sequence that you want. The general 
way to do this is written up step-by-step here:

I think the command-sequence you want is the following:

  command-sequence font-emph; self-insert i.e.; font-emph

Copy that command-sequence line (starting with "command-sequence" and ending 
with the second "font-emph"), then in LyX go to Tools > Preferences > Editing > 
Shortcuts. Then click on "New". In the box "Function", paste the 
command-sequence. Then click on the blank rectangle and then press the key 
sequence you want (unfortunately I think your ideal sequence doesn't work). 
Then press "OK".

I'm sorry I couldn't figure out how to do it with "Ctrl+i+e". It did work for 
me with "Ctrl + ;".

I think a lot of people are just busy. These days are quite difficult for a lot 
of people. We've had our schedules and commitments squeezed, stretched, and 
mixed all up. All of us are volunteers.

It sounds like you might be open to some constructive feedback. I remember that 
for one of your questions you did not post a minimal example. This makes it 
difficult to help. It's nice when the person who wants help tries to make it as 
easy as possible to help them. I think someone else pointed out that you did 
not post a minimal example and you replied "I had already radically shortened 
the LYX file." Well, that's still not a minimal example. And when someone is 
volunteering their time to help you and they point out how you could have made 
it easier, to get such a reply does not make other people want to jump in and 
spend time (often it takes a long time to solve and communicate a solution) to

Tools > Preferences > File Handling > File Formats, choose your format (e.g., 
PDF (pdflatex)), and under "Viewer" select "Custom" and put in "chromium" (or

I think the workflow you're suggesting makes the not-always-true assumption 
that the user does not use the "frame" layout for the *content* of the frame, 
and only uses nested layouts (e.g., itemize or standard). Did I understand 
right?

What abut making it so that if the user changes the layout to "frame title", 
then a *new* frame is started (i.e., LyX realizes "oh this frame already has a 
frame title so the user must want a new frame)?

It does. I think it is a reasonable proposal. I'm just not sure everyone will 
agree. For example, our own beamer example uses the frame layout for content.

Perhaps we can start by writing some use cases that are currently annoying with 
the current interface. Then we can propose different interfaces to make those 
workflows easier. I think your proposal is a reasonable one, but I'm not sure 
it's the only one. Also, I'm hesitant to start this conversation since I would 
really want to see Jürgen's thoughts and I don't think he has much time these 
days.

The main confusion I see is that I think users would like one key combination 
that always produces a new frame. Currently, the user has to think whether to 
do "Alt + P, return" or "Alt + P, shift + return", depending on what nesting 
level they are currently at. Do you agree this is the main problem that your 
proposal and my proposal were both trying to solve? Is there any other big 
issue with the current workflow?

One use case that would benefit from your suggested interface:

It's currently annoying to change a "Frame" to a "Fragile Frame" or
"Plain Frame". Consider the following pseudo code:

  [frame content...]
  [more frame content...]
  [nested itemize]
  [frame content...]

You can't just select all paragraphs and change to the new
(Fragile/Plain) Frame. With your workflow, I think it would be
sufficient to change the first paragraph.

Hi Yuwen, I've come across this as well and have the same goal as you
(to not disable globally but to allow controling on the command line).

The current approach I use is that I created a command 'lyx-noauth',
that uses the '-usedir' argument that points to a user directory where I
did uncheck the "Use needauth option" box.

I use 'lyx -e blah.lyx' when I don't want needauth disabled, and
'lyx-noauth -e blah.lyx' when I do want to disable need auth on the
command line.

Do you think that will work with your workflow?

Great! I'm glad it worked for you. I do think there are things we can do to 
make this easier for users since I think this is a common workflow. But at the 
moment no one is working on this.

What is your workflow for writing a book in multiple languages? Are they
completely separate .lyx files, or do you produce them from the same
.lyx file?

Only if you have time (no worries if not!):
Since you have 2.4.0dev set up: can you export your .lyx file to 2.3.x,
and open the exported file in master? Does compilation succeed? Are
there any differences in the PDF? (a great tool for checking is
diffpdf). Doing this "roundtrip" conversion is a helpful test of
lyx2lyx. If you also have 2.3.x installed, in addition to the above, can
you check that 2.3.x can compile the file that you exported from
2.4.0dev?

I don't think anyone knows. All of our schedules have been disrupted by
the craziness of the last few years. We are in a weird state where
development is happening, but we are not necessarily getting closer to
2.4.0.

Thanks! I think that's how we handle the translations of our manuals as
well. It would be nice if there were an easier workflow so that
everything could be in one .lyx file, but perhaps no such workflow
exists.

Don't worry about it! I'll ask you again whenever we are close to
releasing 2.4.0 if we really want lyx2lyx to get some extra testing with

How about a maximum of one use of "RTM" per year? Use it wisely.

I would be in favor of a policy that encourages respectful, and

I think first you have to add Theorems (AMS). It's strange in your

Hi Michela,

Unfortunately, we've seen a lot of strange issues reported by LyX users 
upgrading to Ventura. Further, we have only one LyX developer whose main 
operating system is macOS and I'm not even sure if they are on Ventura so I 
don't know if there will be a fix anytime soon since it's hard to figure out 
what the problem is and how to fix it. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience!

Hi Gordon,

Ouch! That sounds really frustrating! I do not think you should buy a new 
computer just because of this. We are working on releasing 2.4.0, and I wonder 
if this will somehow work for you since it has a lot of improvements compared 
to the version you're using.

Wow, 14 hours a day! I wonder if there is an entry in the Guiness Book of World 
Records for LyX usage?

It is our goal that you should not have to know anything about Python, Unix, 
Qt, C++, etc., to use LyX. Unfortunately, in practice it's hard to achieve that 
since LyX has a lot of things it needs to work well and sometimes the parts 
don't line up.

Specifically, it will be helpful to figure out whether the bug only
surfaces on certain operating systems, and only with certain
configurations.

Here is the recipe to reproduce the bug:

  1. Maximize (non-fullscreen) the window
  2. Enter Full screen mode
  3. Exit Full screen.

After step 3, does the LyX window return to the state after step (1)?
i.e., is the window maximized?

If you try to reproduce it, please state:

1. Can you reproduce the bug?
2. Your operating system and version number (version number is
   especially helpful for macOS users).
3. Copy/paste the info from Help > About.


Here's my own responses to the 3 questions:

1. No. (the window is correctly restored as maximized after 3 for me).
2. Ubuntu 22.04.
3. Pasted info is below:

Thank you all, this information is helpful! I think we've got enough
information. I guess it's not the Qt version then, because Wolfgang can
reproduce with 5.15.2 and kzstatis cannot reproduce with 5.15.2. It's
also not a macOS-specific issue since Wolfgang is on Linux.
