Normally not. You will be able to edit, but not typeset. This was not
true for older versions of LyX (1.2?)

Yeah, but if you save your document, won't all your styles disappear?

That happens if the .layout file is missing or broken.
Merely missing latex shouldn't remove styles, although there

exactly, but it is disturbing to have to switch instant preview (which

In other terms, I was suggesting to introduce a way to have instant

what do you mean by "screen reader"? a reader for pdf/dvi output? In
this case, it wouldn't because normally one would convert from LyX to

There's currently no user interface to change this. You have to do this
manually:
- open the file "preferences" you find in
  C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\lyx15
- change there the entry
  \preview_scale_factor 1.0
to a value of your choice or add this entry to the misc section when it

For me (LyX 1.5.4 on OS X), changing the "Screen DPI" setting in
Preferences -> Look and feel -> Screen fonts
changes the size of the rendered formulas.

Set Screen DPI to 200 and you get HUGE rendered formulas.
You need to restart LyX for this setting to take effect.

I never really understood what this setting is good for, so this might also
influence some other things (?).

'Boxes' closed at file opening

2008-04-10 Thread Nicola Focci
Hi!
I'm an Italian and happy LyX user.
I'm so happy that I wrote an italian tutorial, free for download (
http://www.lulu.com/content/2306671).
Just a question: is there a way to have all the "boxes" in the working area
(ERT, floats, ecc.) closed at file opening?
In LyX 1.5.4 (Mac & Win), the ".lyx" file opens with all the boxes expanded.
If the document has many of them (particularly float images), I find the
text scrolling to be difficult, an "jumpy".
Thanks!

When i try to insert the bibliography in Lyx under

If i try the option "all formts" i open the file but it becames empty.
So when i try cite, the citation appear, but when i do a DVI preview
the citation is a ?

My only chance is the manual method.
Is anything wrong, or is this a bug of Lyx?.

Moderncv cls and font problems

2008-04-10 Thread snvv
Hello

How can I change the preamble and sections fonts of moderncv class?
How can I expand the area in the upper right of the first page to accommodate
more stuff? I have read the the
http://wiki.lyx.org/Examples/ModernCVClassIssues but there is nothing
relevant in my files...

I use 2007 moderncv class and seems to be quite different from the old one.
I use 1.5.4 LyX both in linux and windows using texlive & miketex. The problem
is the same.

Finally when I change the name from English to Greek then it is displayed with
Latin and not Greek characters.
If I use in the preamble \textgreek{} to convert the Latin fonts to Greek then
the letters are very strange and they totally different from the selected
text in the main document.

Any help will be greatly appreciated... I have lost about a week with that :)

My guess is that your bibliographical databases are not saved with the .bib
extension. That would explain why the files are dimmed in the dialog and
why, once you force LyX to recognize them, BibTeX nonetheless doesn't. If
that's right, simply add ".bib" to the appropriate files and it should work.
If not, look in the LaTeX Log for error messages (Document > LaTeX Log), and
if you don't understand them, post them to the list for further help.

They worked as expected, I mean.. the master document behaves rightly

So, I stated to _compare_ de "Document settings" from yours (the test)

that was there always present and I was unable to notice until several

everything can be possible, those two things particularly here, but if I
have to choose, I PREFER _chapter names in upper case letters, at the
beginning of each (child) document despite the right header have to come

which dislikes me*, just in order to get lower case letters in the
headers.

* Into these kind of materials I'm working right now (much long
chapters).

I just can't understand your hate for lowercase chapter names --
even if chapters are very long :). Anyway, the best I can do is the
following:

replace:
 \renewcommand{\chaptermark}[1]{\markboth{#1}{}}
with:
 \renewcommand{\chaptermark}[1]{\markboth{\lowercase{#1}}{}}

But this makes *all* characters in lower case, even the first one --
which probably makes this solution not suitable to your needs.

If someone knew how to handle strings (in particular, characters
arrays) in LaTeX, it would be easy to get a *definitive* solution
for your problem. I never heard about this possibility, but I'm sure
something must exist.

Bibtex In-Text-Citations Problem

2008-04-10 Thread Johannes Knaus

Hello,

I don't know if the following is a Lyx problem or a Bibtex-style
problem.

I have created my own .bst file using makebst. Nearly everthing works
as expected but there's one little thing that I can't figure out:

It's concerning the formatting of in-text-citations.
Such citations should appear in the form Author(year) or (Author,
year). This works.
But when I cite two different works of the same author citations
should appear in the form Author(year1, year2) or (Author, year1,
year2).
While the second alternative appears as expected the first appears as
Author(year1; year2) with a semicolon (but I want semicolons only
between different authors).

I haven't found anything within makebst to change this or do I have to
choose some special ERT-formatting in Lyx?

I have attached the .bst and the .dbj file.

Thanks for your help,
Johannes

No need to worry about MacTeX with upgrading LyX: it *should* just work.
(Make sure you run the LyX/Mac installer, though.)

If you have problems with upgrading LyX, most likely they can be worked
around by moving aside your LyX user's directory (~/Library/Application
Support/LyX-1.5) and restarting LyX.

If you upgrade MacTeX, it's possible (depending on the versions of LyX and
TeX you currently have) that LyX won't know where your new installation of
MacTeX is. Upgrading LyX should solve that.

You can always edit the Preamble in LyX under Document -> Settings -> LateX
Preamble. Not sure if that's what you mean. The fonts are controlled by what
you set in Doc -> Settings as well.

You'll need to be more clear. The 2007 roll-up of moderncv is the latest one
and the one that was used in constructing the Wiki page. So, we're on the
same page with that. What do you mean by "there is nothing relevant" in your
files? Clearly you have to have the package installed and the class and
style files present. That's all you need. I'm guessing you just need to
figure out where your TeX distribution files are located?? On my XP machine
they're here:

C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.6\tex\latex\moderncv

No need to worry about MacTeX with upgrading LyX: it *should* just
work.

(Make sure you run the LyX/Mac installer, though.)

If you have problems with upgrading LyX, most likely they can be
worked
around by moving aside your LyX user's directory (~/Library/
Application

Support/LyX-1.5) and restarting LyX.

If you upgrade MacTeX, it's possible (depending on the versions of
LyX and
TeX you currently have) that LyX won't know where your new
installation of

MacTeX is. Upgrading LyX should solve that.

Thanks, but I'm unable to find the section where you explain how to
set a string to lowercase except for the first character.

Joking ;). Thanks to you now I can set my headers and footers in a
more neafty manner.

By the way, have you ever reverse-engineered some tex files in order
to understand how it could be possible to lowercase everything but
the first character in a string?

Thanks.

Tried to look for it on CTAN (the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network)?

http://www.ctan.org/get/macros/latex/contrib/memoir.zip

On CTAN you can find almost every LaTeX package that you will ever need.

How to install a downloaded package on your computer? Well, I don't
know how to do it under Windows, but with some fantasy and a little
googling you'll get there.

Sorry that was a poorly asked questions
I read the some mail here and saw a suggesting to use the Mitek package manager
to install the memori package, but it says it is already installed.
So When I go under Document --> settings -->Document Class
and choose "Unavailable:Book (memoir)"
it then says

"The layout file requested by this document, memoir, layout is no usable. This is
probably because a LaTeX class or style files required by it is not available.
See Customization documentation for more information. Lyx will not be able to
produce output."

At this point, I truly get lost.

Any help appreciated.

I was not clear. If we use moderncv we have to define the name, address etc in
the preamble.
The problem is if that you don't use enlish then the name etc are not
displayed properly.

Further, the name, address and sections fonts are different from the main body
of the CV. Probably, we have to change some parameters in order to change
that fonts but there is no manual for moderncv to explain the procedure.

Both my texlive (ver 2007) and MiKTeX 2.7 systems have the following files
for moderncv class:
moderncv.cls, moderncvcompatibility.sty, moderncvthemecasual.sty,
moderncvthemeclassic.sty, moderncvthemeempty.sty

Therefore there is no moderncvthemeclassichack.sty file I searched the net
for that file but I could not find anything, so it should be misspelled.
Then, I searched the files in my system for \moderncvtheme[blue, roman]
{classic} and I could not find something and I thought the LyX wiki was an
old one.

Thank you

Maybe there is a more elegant way, but the first thing that comes to
my mind is putting this into a math box:

 \underline{\qquad\qquad\qquad}

You can replace \qquad with any other kind of math (or non-math)

Is there a way to configure LyX so that when I double-click on an area in

Right now, when I double-click in Yap, it comes up with:

One way of doing this is to insert a 1x1 table, specify the column width, and
put a border on the bottom only. Or you could put both parts in a table.

Go to Start->All Programs->MiKTeX version->Browse Packages and search
for memoir in the Name field. Click on memoir and click the + sign to
install. Then do a Tools->Reconfigure in LyX and all should be well.
Memoir should be 'available'.

Right now, when I double-click in Yap, it comes up with:
"MiKTeX Problem Report:
The source file could not be opened because the page contains no source
links."

Don't know what this means, maybe the documentation Yap tells you more.

Of course, because it is the same command that I used. The scheme is

\rule[vertical position]{length}{thickness}

(e.g. \rule[-.6ex]{3cm}{1pt} )

I meant you can use the underscore keyboard key multiple times as you already have don to writ the

Sorry, I meant:

 \underline{\hspace{3cm}}

in a math box.

And that's definitely the most elegant way of doing it. In my
opinion! :)

Sorry, didn't fully read your last post. You said you already
installed memoir through the MiKTeX package manager.

Then you just need to do Tool->Reconfigure within LyX so that it
recognizes this newly installed package.

That's strange. I was going to tell you that when i do a lyx reconfigure it just
hangs there forever until I have to close the program, but when i just restarted
it now seems available. strange.
thanks.
would this be a bug to report on vista?

No, I don't believe it's a bug. Sometimes (especially the first time)
you reconfigure LyX it can take quite awhile (you probably just
weren't quite patient enough :-}). I've had to wait upwards of 5min or
more. Sometimes restarting helps Windoze.

Maybe there's a more efficient way, but this should work.

\def\spezza#1#2\endname{\gdef\prima{#1}\gdef\RESTO{#2}}
\def\minuscolizza#1\endname{\lowercase{\gdef\resto{#1}}}
\def\maiuscolizza#1\endname{\uppercase{\gdef\prima{#1}}}
\def\capitalize#1{%

Yes, but you have to use the Cygwin version of LyX.

> Right now, when I double-click in Yap, it comes up with:
> "MiKTeX Problem Report:
> The source file could not be opened because the page contains no source

You have to change the LaTeX->DVI converter in Tools->Preferences->Converters
to "latex -src-specials $$i". As an alternative to redefining the converter,
you can put "\usepackage[active]{srcltx}" in the preamble of the LyX file.

Now, in the View->Options menu in yap, under the "Inverse DVI Search" tab,
set the path to the batch file lyxeditor.bat below. Enter something like
"C:\cygwin\usr\local\bin\lyxeditor.bat %f %l"

This 2-line batch file is a wrapper for the lyxeditor.sh bash script which
does the real work and that you also find pasted below (put both files in
/usr/local/bin and make sure that they are executable).

-8<-8<- lyxeditor.bat -8<-8<-8<-
@echo off
c:\cygwin\bin\bash /usr/local/bin/lyxeditor.sh %1 %2
-8<-8<-8<-8<-8<-8<-8<-8<-

-8<-8<- lyxeditor.sh -8<-8<-8<-
# Pass filename and line number of a latex file to the lyxpipe of a running
# instance of LyX. LyX will jump to the corresponding line in the .lyx file
# being previewed in either yap or xdvi.
# This script is directly invoked by the dvi viewer when initiating a
# reverse dvi search (yap uses double click, xdvi ctrl-click).
# When using yap, this script should be called through a wrapper batch file.

Right. The Wiki page says that you need to copy the moderncvthemeclassic.sty
file and rename it (to ...hack.sty - or whatever other name you prefer),
then make the suggested changes.

The .tex file that you export from LyX will have something like this in the
document class declaration.

Nothing unusual there. LyX should copy your .bib files to the same temporary
directory where it creates the .tex file, and BibTeX should find them there.
I don't know why it's not.

I also don't understand why you're having the problems you are with

How to make a title page?

2008-04-10 Thread HZ
Hi all,

How can I make a title page for report?

Normally, there should be a title, author, logo and date at the foot of the
title page.
Can I generate a separate lyx file for the title page and include my report
lyx file within it?
Is there a customized layout file to do that?

Thanks a lot!

For some of you this will sound like a broken record, but I never get tired of
saying it -- fine tune your front matter with custom styles and ERT,
including page breaks. Trying to get any document class to present the front
matter in a specific way, and still having that document class do a good job
in the mainmatter, has in my experience been walking the trail of tears.

Are you running Debian/unstable and switched to Qt 4.4.0rc1?
(Or did you make this switch on any other distribution?)
