If you will go to the oparation manager most Israeli bussinesses, they will not have a clue on how to change vendors or IT outsourcing, be it Linux, Windows or Novell. One of the claims of FOSS is that the client is in power and can change vendors easily as plenty of vendors are able to provide the service. Hi Gil, The points above, combined with the occational BSA ads and articles like http://whatsup.co.il/article.php?sid=1972 (9 german cities consider moving to Linux instead of paying MS for upgrading their systems next year) drive me to a "campeign idea": "Microsoft/BSA scares you? Speaking of BSA and M$abuses, how about emphasizing the fact that MS are withdrawing WinNT support and forcing you to upgrade your legacy WinNT systems to WinXP if you want patches against threats like MSBlaster or SoBig.F? X won't give high-res with high colors
Hi all, Sorry that this post is a little scarce on details. I will fill them in when I have them again. I am installing Linux on my sister's laptop (a Dell centrino, don't have exact model). I went for RH9 because that's what would be fastest to install. It correctly detected almost everything (sound, display adapter). At least, I think it did. Everything seemed to work. However, when X is set up for 16 or 32 bits/pixel, the highest resolution available seem to be 640x480. Looking at the X startup log, I can see that the system detects resolutions of up to 1280x1024, but discards them all as non-matching (I did not manage to understand what it was they did not match). When I set the color depth to 8, X has no problem starting at 1024x768 (the highest the LCD will support). Can anyone think of a reason without the X log available, and also think of what I may need to look at besides the X log? I don't have high availability of the laptop, so I'm trying to pick up all the information I might need in advance. I'm not a real expert, but I think resolution detection works like this (pseudocode): foreach ( res in vesa_resolutions ) { if ( monitor_supports( res, depth ) ) { set_resolution( res, depth ); break; } } if ( resolution_still_unset ) { fail (X); } Although I think it also tries other depths in an outer loop if your depth doesn't match, but I'm not sure. I think your problem is that laptop monitors have resolutions that don't necessarily match vesa standard resolutions, so you either have to give a specific modeline (complete voodo), or hope that one of the monitor resolution matches a vesa resolution. I would venture further to guess that the highest vesa resolution supported by your monitor takes too much memory from the graphics card to support full depth. Re: X won't give high-res with high colors
If the GPU is NVIDIA, then you need to install their drivers, otherwise X (sometimes) detects it wrong and uses the nv driver instead of nvidia. If it's not nvidia gpu, then post what is the hardware specs and the x log, if poossible. strange, whats the thing with the read only? if this is what you get when you check out a file then the "cvs watch on " was set on the file. this means, that before you start editing a file you must run "cvs edit " and the file will be set +write. you edit, save, commit. if you changed your mind before commit and want to return to the original file, just "cvs unedit ". anyway, if you had enough with the read only you can do "cvs watch off " on your directory because it could be the default policy for adding files. please note, that if your are not alone in this cvs repository, you will have to continue with the "cvs edit" "unedit" thing. good luck. * - * - * Tzahi Fadida MSc Student Information System Engineering Area Faculty of Industrial Engineering & Management Technion - Israel Institute of Technology Technion City, Haifa, Israel 32000 Email [EMAIL PROTECTED] Technion Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * WARNING TO SPAMMERS: see at http://members.lycos.co.uk/my2nis/spamwarning.html > -Original Message- > From: Erez Doron [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Thursday, September 18, 2003 5:13 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Cc: Ilug > Subject: Re: vi question > > > i have a script that does checkout, but i have to do: > 1. write the file -> i get a warning it is r/o > 2. force write ( :w! ) -> still can't write > 3. run checkout script > 4. vi now tells me that the file i'm editing is older than the file on > disk. i press 'o' for o.k. > 5. i write again (:w) -> still read only > 6. force write (:w! ) -> vi says again that the file on disk is newer, > and verifies if i really want to save, i answer yes. > > i want to skip all this by doing it automatically > > cheers, > > erez. > > > Tzahi Fadida wrote: > > >what about a script? > >here is a script i wrote in 5 min. you are missing the "if" to check > if the file > >is read only, i don't know what program can test that, but i am sure others > >know(p.s i used bash): > >#!/bin/sh > >PATH=/usr/ucb:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin > >MAILTO=root > >MAIL=/bin/mail > >CVSROOT=:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/cvs/master > >cvs update $1 > >cvs edit $1 > >vi $1 > > > > > >* - * - * > >Tzahi Fadida > >MSc Student > >Information System Engineering Area > >Faculty of Industrial Engineering & Management > >Technion - Israel Institute of Technology > >Technion City, Haifa, Israel 32000 > >Email [EMAIL PROTECTED] > >Technion Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > >* - * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * > > > >WARNING TO SPAMMERS: see at > http://members.lycos.co.uk/my2nis/spamwarning.html > > > > > > > >>-Original Message- > >>From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > >>[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Erez Doron > >>Sent: Thursday, September 18, 2003 1:15 PM > >>To: Ilug > >>Subject: vi question > >> > >> > >>hi > >> > >>i am using a version control software > >>i want vi to automatically checkout a file whenver i try to edit it > >>while it is read-only. > >>this includes running a command line, then reloading the file (because > >>the date changes when i checkout the file), then let me edit it. > >> > >>i want all to be automatically ( e.g. when i change the file) > >> > >>how do i do that ( or part of it ) ? > >> > >> > >>cheers, > >>erez > >> > >> > >>= > >>To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with > >>the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command > >>echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] > >> > >> > >> > >> > >> > > > > > > > > > > = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: vi question
maybe i didn't explain mysel well enough i am not using cvs but clearcase. when a file is checked in - it is read only (both as r--r--r-- and as read-only-file-system) when i check it out via a command, then it is still as r--r--r--, but i can now change it with chmod. te filesystem is no longer read only anyway, my question was about vi, not about a script. i mannaged to map to do almost what i wanted. i added a line to ~/.vimrc: map :!ctco %:p:w! this will run 'ctco' script with the full path of the file i am editing, then deos a ':w!' to save the only thing left for me to do is : 1. press f9 2. press y for yes-i-am-sure (strange i couldn't add that to the map command) what i still need is that if the file is read-only, whenver i press 'i' for insert or 'o' or I or a or A etc ... that it will do what f9 does, ( and also get rid of the 'y' i have to answer) cheers, erez. The autocmd should respond to the event FileChangedRO. Actually, the help system says: "FileChangedRO - Before making the first change to a read-only file. Can be used to check-out the file from a source control system". Now, for details, open vim and write ":help autocmd". As for defining a function, use ":help function". Looking for a mobile unit with shelves to be used as mobile rack.
A full fledged rack is too expensive in my view when there should be cheaper replacements that fulfill my needs. Can anyone suggest suppliers for the following unit: 1. It could be used as an equipment rack in the sense that it has shelves where equipment can be put to work. The shelves might not be rigid in the sense that they might contain holes or made of bars. This will make the whole thing lighter, hopefully cheaper and also might help to get cables through. Stability, of course, is still vital. 2. Must have wheels but still be stable. 3. Cheap. 4. Low self weigh. 5. At most 2 side walls if it has walls at the first place. Preferably with only bars, not walls, to insure a stable construction. I guess that a high, mobile unit where one can put his TV set, and video and stereo equipment is close to what I am looking for. In fact, I saw such a thing at the catalogue Ikea spread lately in mail boxes in Tel-Aviv. It is their TUNSTA series. Still, I would like something with the depth, width and carrying capacity of their shorter model, the height of their taller model. I would also like it to be cheaper, and might be obtainable in Tel-Aviv. It could be that cheaper is not likely, since the prices they wrote are around 425 NIS, but I hope at least to get something that is better suited to my requirements for the same price. Aren't there such units made of plastic or wood, perhaps for self construction? -- Shaul Karl, shaulk @ actcom . net . il = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yup, It really depends how you put those images. The best solution would be creating on your "server" an NFS mount point with the ISO's inside.. Ok, here's an update in case someone is interested - I still don't know why it happens, but I can fix it - sorta.. It only happens in the forum because the forum is written in PHP and uses ob_start('ob_gz_handler'); commenting out that line, and everything works perfectly (no gzip support of course). this is what I think is why everything but links chokes - links doesn't pertain to support gzip compression, so ob_gz_handler doesn't do anything for it. now more funny stuff - output_buffering is off. its the default and I forgot to change it. so I turn it on and everything still works, then I turn on ob_gz_handler, and this time I get the response - but its all garbled, like the browser can't understand the encoding. I noticed that the content being received from the server when ob_gz_handler is on is indeed gzip compressed data, but with an additional \r\n at front. after I traced that to one of the php files and removed it, things started to work again. apparently, the browser gets stuck when ob_gz_handler is active and there is data before the handler is called. this data gets flushed out of the output buffer and is sent infront of the gzip compressed, but after the headers - which messes up stuff. additionally, ob_gz_handler waits for the entire page to render before compressing it and sending it all away in one big chunk - unlike using zlib.output_compression which isn't affected by whitespace at the header and is compressing on the fly. What I don't understand is why I see this as a network error - tcpdumping at the server I can see the reponse packet being sent out but never getting an ack. Also - I don't understand why it eoes work after a long time - giving the browser something like two minutes will allow it to eventually get the page up. this behavior is not consistant with either network problem or gzip compression issue. Debian 3.0 & lindows 4.0
Hi list, I am testing a few distros. I got Lindows 4. My review: I got a new P4 2.4 with intel motherboard with agp , eth onboard. RH9 installs perfect in it. Lindows goes to graphic mode (640x480) cause it could not resolve the module for the video card. After a few screens you are asked to accept some question, but the buttons are unreacheables. I though that I may found some help on the net. nothing there. There is a diagnostics mode that throws you to the shell. There is also no info in the net of what can you do with it. but anyhow I tried adding under the Display Section: Virtual 800 600 and it did not work. I installed in another machine, the install asks you for a password (not required) for what it became clear after it that it was for the root user. On the kdm it shows as username administrator, but if you check the /etc/passwd there is only root. there is no ssh installed. Ppl are supposed to use the click & run to install software (you have to pay for the service). opening terminal and running cat /etc/apt/sources.list shows that points to the debian stable. so you can install whatever you whant with synaptic ( you need to run apt-get install synaptic first). :) Now Debian 3 what a deception. I tried cd1, cd5, mini. I tried booting the bf24 ... it has the module eepro100 but even do running cat /proc/pci shows that it is my ethernet card. it fails to load even when forced. Googling I only got a few postof people saying that either it work out of the box or that they have to recompile a new kernel Knoppix (based on debian) runs the module without problem on the same pc. I know that till now I wrote like a review, but the real point is that I am using RH for long time and I would like to switch to Debian because I like the apt-get system ( install once, run forever). I am sure there must be out there debians servers running the lastest software with a uptime of years. Can anybody help me to help me get in theDebian world? Looking at the X startup log, I can see that the system detects resolutions of up to 1280x1024, but discards them all as non-matching (I did not manage to understand what it was they did not match). When I set the color depth to 8, X has no problem starting at 1024x768 (the highest the LCD will support). Can anyone think of a reason without the X log available, and also think of what I may need to look at besides the X log? I don't have high availability of the laptop, so I'm trying to pick up all the information I might need in advance. Re: Latest article on Linux + Open Source in local media

Immediately I told him not to worry, and the next day I gave him 3 cd's of MDK 9.1 (couldn't find the RH9 I got from linux.israel.net conference). He's a student programmer 2) My boss at the law office has one computer with win95 on it. The employer asked me why she doesn't have internet, and I found out that she had no IE installed (is it possible?). I grabbed the opportunity and installed Opera 7.2beta (hold the flames, it's lighter than firebird, and that's an old machine). She told my boss about it, and the next day he asked me if I could install these lightweight browsers that don't take too much resources, and in the same time it would be best if I unistall IE from them. Told him that IE is part of the OS, and that current freeware/free browsers are superior, but have one problem: they can't navigate in the Israeli court site (www.court.gov.il). No law firm can work without it. Epilogue: 1) I don't know what about the programmer, he was probably re-assigned, but at least I got to point him to whatsup for help if he needed it. 2) As for my boss, I'll be on the lookout for changes in browsers / the site itself. BTW, I contacted Opera about it, and they told me what the problem was in the site. Sent it to the site admins. Got no response. This is the message I sent: -- this mail should be addressed to the person in-charge of building/ maintaining the site -- Your site had helped me a lot, since it has been for some time now, that i'm working as an intern in a law firm. The information is precisely what i need in 87% of the cases. This saves a lot of money for my boss, due to less time spent in calling the information center or even going to court. There is one problem, though. Last week i started working in office with the browser i work at home: Opera browser. It's fast, it's small, it's easy to use and i like it. But no matter what i tried to do, it couldn't open a page with the links in court.gov.il homepage. In this time of despair, i turned to the Opera development team, which gave me the following response (i've shortened it for you): -- The "window.navigate" function is an incompatible extension to JavaScript - it is not supported by any other browser than IE and is therefore best avoided. "location" assignments can be used instead, e.g. window.navigate('home.html') // IE only can be replaced with window.location='home.html' // All known JavaScript-supporting browsers -- This is a weird thing to me, since court.gov.il is a government site, that's supposed to serve the entire population, which means that from the beginning there shouldn't have been any IE specific tags. This seems to be like a simple Find&Replace task, that would enable the entire population to use this convenient site. If you want more details, you can contact Opera Software at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] And again, you've managed to make a great site, why not let everybody use it? AC'97 playing but no sound heard
Hi all! I recently had to upgrade my computer. I re-installed Mandrake 9.1 on it. Everything except the sound works great, and I can use X11 and connect to the Internet. However, I have problems with the sound. I have an on-board AC'97 card. I set all the mixer settings to near-maximal volume, and the apps actually play sound (xmms displays these waveforms), but no sound is heard. The card is on-board and works perfectly fine in Windows 98'. Frightening buisnesses is also problematic, since Linux appeals firstly to the servers, and if the boss has a stolen server installed, no worker knows about it. Believe me, I know. 2) Security issues- Most people have the following distinction: (a) When you have a security issue in an open software/standard - It's because this kind of software is made by freaks. A friend of mine started a new project, and his programmer made his site with php; When I told him that php is as good as asp, plus it can be seen in any browser, he replied "but php is a language for freeks" (php zo safa shel freekim!). (b) When a security issue rizes on any (or all) MS OS's or software - It's because of those horrible russian hackers (FMO they should be mutilated) that want to destroy computers for fun, and they probably do it because they use Linux and hate MS. By now, we should all be aware that in order to reach more users, the frame has to be m-o-r-e appealing and easy to use. Trying to moralize users just won't work, since it's OK to take a free MS CD from a friend. I guess that there's something very wrong about me talking this way, writing this Email on my pegasus mail program, that runs only on MS98se... Wanted to switch to Mozilla on my Linux partition, but couldn't import/export my past years' messages.
