[LincolnTalk] 'Beyond the Swap' Reuse & Donation Resource Guide

2021-10-04 Thread Staci Montori
Hello Lincoln Friends,

Many people have asked where things that the Swap Shed cannot handle (due
to large quantity, size and perhaps inappropriateness like old stuffed
animals, etc...) can be donated locally.

Below is Zero Waste Lincoln's "Beyond the Swap" Resource Guide for Reuse
and Donations.

Thanks in advance for donating your items to these great organizations and
for keeping reusable items out of the waste incinerator.

Sincerely,

Zero Waste Lincoln

2021-12-29 Thread Staci Montori
Hi Susan,
Greasy pizza boxes and dirty cardboard is NOT accepted. Clean, empty
cardboard IS and it is fine to leave on the tape. This is taken off at the
recycling center. The paper/cardboard recycling is at the back of the
Transfer station, near the other mix recycling and trash.
Please see

Thanks so much,

Re: [LincolnTalk] iPhone and Verizon

2022-02-08 Thread Staci Montori
Hi Deb,
I am having the exact same thing happen. It is very frustrating. I thought
it was my phone or bluetooth at first and almost went to trade in my phone,
but then someone else said they were having the same issues.
I am thinking it doesn't happen when I am making calls outside of Lincoln,
but not completely sure. Have you noticed it is happening only in Lincoln
or everywhere? I do know know that it doesn't happen with iphone audio
facetime so it does seem to only have to do with the wireless phone
function.
I am going to call Verizon as well but first need to find enough time to
spend on it as I don't think it will be a quick fix. Please let me know if
you have any success in getting it fixed. I will do the same.
Warm regards,
Staci

We LOVE our Loll Designs outdoor furniture- chairs and outdoor couch and

Great customer service too. Not inexpensive but worth the money I think.

[LincolnTalk] Housing Choice/Codman Corner Road

2023-10-13 Thread Staci Montori
Hi Susanna,

My understanding is that the first SLIPC working group looked at rezoning
an 'out of the way' area, the Green Ridge/"Flying Nun" condo area. There
was a huge amount of residential resistance against this proposal.
Residents and neighbors were concerned that many of the people renting at
more affordable rates would be forced to move out of Lincoln if the
property owners wanted to sell to a developer. The current working group
found this to be a reasonable concern and therefore didn't include this
area in the recent rezoning plans.

The Codman Road neighborhood (where I live) is all privately owned and
therefore none of us will be forced to sell or move. Therefore, it is a
more fair and sensitive rezoning proposal.

We absolutely love living close to the MBTA, the town station, the school,
the fields and the farms. We utilize all of these often by foot, not by
car. The main reason we chose to live on Codman Road 23 years ago was for
the walkability - to the grocery store, the bank, the cafe, and
to Something Special. And for the bike paths from our home to the schools,
soccer fields and farms, along with the proximity to all the green space
and trails surrounding us. I would love for more families and individuals
(perhaps one of my three children someday) to have the opportunity to live
at the town station or on parts of my road or Lewis street if parcels are
redeveloped.

I am very optimistic that any possible negative aesthetic changes and
traffic patterns to the town station and possibly my neighborhood, will be
offset by the benefits of providing a home and community to many more
people. They will all benefit from the amazing things that Lincoln has to
offer such as extensive green space, organic food and farms, a fantastic
public school and a commuter rail into Boston. I also think a more vibrant,
dense town center will attract more successful businesses, making it so we
all don't have to drive our cars into other communities (causing traffic
for them) for a variety of things.

Finally, I will say I find the comments from some on LT, that our
neighborhood is possibly looking to make millions on this change in zoning,
to be misinformed. We and several of our neighbors want to be part of the
solution for the housing crisis, lack of diversity and the climate crisis.
Building a more housing-dense, vibrant, green and accesible town center
will help with these.

We SO appreciate the HCA committee for being very creative, thoughtful and
responsive to us and others in town, and for creating a plan that both
meets the requirements and the spirit of the HCA .

Warm regards,
Staci Montori & the Montori-Bordiuk Family

[LincolnTalk] Fwd: HCA & Codman Road

2023-10-25 Thread Staci Montori
Hi Sara,

Better yet, maybe we should compare how often those of us within the town
center walk or bike to the post office, Donelan’s, Something Special,
Codman Farm, Twisted Tree, the bank, the school, etc.. compared to how
often those who don’t live within 1/2 mile, drive their cars to town center
(or elsewhere) for groceries, to the school, etc.

My guess (sort of a no brainer IMHO) is that those of us within the 1/2
mile to town center (regardless of how many cars we own) drive our cars a
lot less frequently to these places than those farther away.

Sincerely,
Staci Montori

Hi Paula and Jennifer,

Mothers Out Front Lincoln is hoping to host an information session on the
HCA. We would like it if either of you (or someone from the committee or
Uitle) could help our members (and others interested) understand each of
the HCA choices being brought to SOTT and their possible climate and
environmental impacts.

Mothers Out Front Brookline did something similar and it helped their
members understand the choices and process.

We were thinking about a short info session over zoom at lunchtime the week
of 11/27. Preferably Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

Please let me know your thoughts and if yes, what time could work.

I appreciate that you are asking "please don't take the poll more than
once" but will you be able to make sure nobody votes more than once? If
not, I don't think your results will be valid.

I ask because, today I kindly asked during a zoom call I was co-hosting
that was addressing the HCA Options and Climate and Environmental Justice.
I asked people to stay on topic in the chat and to refrain from asking
questions outside of the stated parameters of the discussion. A few didn't
respect this and continued to bog down the chat with other issues that fed
their particular agendas. It felt to me to be similar to a tactic some use
on LT- respond quickly and multiple times to bury other's concerns and lead
others away from the stated topic.

My guess (sadly) is that many will do something similar with your poll to
sway the results in a certain direction, if you do not have a way to
prevent this.

If you do have a way to make sure 'one person, one vote', I will
participate.

Thank you,
Staci

Re: [LincolnTalk] My Turn: With measured success, officials grapple with HCA vote at multi-board meeting

2023-12-07 Thread Staci Montori
Hi Lynn,

Another way to look at the numbers from Saturday's vote is: *62% of the
voters* on Saturday voted for a plan that includes rezoning the mall, the
only area where there is currently a plan in the works to increase homes to
help with the housing crisis. As a proponent for more housing NOW, I found
this number very encouraging.

Way to go Lincoln. :)

[LincolnTalk] seeking bluebird midwife advice

2024-06-15 Thread Staci Montori
Hi LT friends,
Over here on Codman Road, we have had the good fortune to have a pair of
bluebirds raising 5 babies. We dealt with the aggressive sparrow by putting
up a sparrow spooker. It worked! However, sadly today I found the mother
dead. My best guess is that she flew into our window and broke her neck. :(
The male is working his tail feathers off, feeding his young double time
it seems. I am considering getting a bluebird feeder to help him out. I
can't imagine he can raise all five successfully without a helping hand.
I have never put out mealworms for them. Can anyone share if bluebirds will
actually feed their young from a feeder source? If so, I will head to
Russels tomorrow and pick up the supplies.
Any advice is welcome. Thank you.
Best,
Staci

[LincolnTalk] Bluebird Foster mom update

2024-06-17 Thread Staci Montori
Hi LT,
Thank you for all of the help with my bluebird situation! The outpouring
of support was awesome. I am so grateful.
I am happy to report things seem to be going quite well for the newly
single dad and his babies.
Yesterday, I got live mealworms from the pet store (I was advised against
dried due to possible dehydration issues for the chicks) and a hanging
feeder from Russels. Within 5 minutes of putting it out, the male located
it and fed his babies with the worms. It was quite sweet to see him with a
beak full of worms, fly to the nest and hear all the chirping as he fed
them. I spread out feedings through the day and again this morning.
Today- day 15 since their hatching- I watched three of them fledge and take
their first flights into our red maple. The dad is now feeding them in the
tree. I think there may be two more in the box, but I will wait to check
until tomorrow.
I plan to supply daily mealworms for at least the next few weeks to give
dad a helping hand.
As unfortunate as it is to have the female die, the timing seemed okay as
the babies seemed pretty hearty. The male is very dedicated and from what I
read, the males do most of the feeding after fledging since the females
tend to focus their energy on building a new nest for their next
brood, so these babies are in good hands (or wings.:).
This sweet male will have no problem finding a new mate soon, is my guess.
I just hope his new mate finds my bluebird trail on the corner of Codman
and Lewis to be attractive. I am quite smitten with him.
Thanks again everyone!
Best,
Staci
PS- another Lincoln resident had a similar situation this week. It was the
male that died, though. I hope this isn't a pattern, just an unfortunate
coincidence. I can't say for sure it was a window strike that killed the
female. That was just my best guess. I hope there isn't an illness
spreading amongst the bluebirds here.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Nearby gymnastics for kids?

2022-12-16 Thread Staci Montori
Hi Leah,
We have had a great experience with Massachusetts Gymnastics Academy. My
daughter, Athena was part of the Sudbury team for several years. Now she
does private lessons weekly with Dave in Waltham. Athena only stopped the
team because she switched to full time circus. She does private tumbling
classes weekly. Dave is amazing- the best gymnastics coach she has worked
with so far, so I recommend starting at Waltham vs. Sudbury.
Have fun!

[LincolnTalk] ISO small boom box

2023-01-09 Thread Staci Montori
Hi LT,

Before heading to Target or Best Buy, I am reaching out to my favorite
community resource in hopes of finding an item locally.

My daughter is looking to borrow a small or medium sized boombox to use as
a prop for a circus show audition. (It doesn’t need to actually work
because the music will not necessarily come from it.) She will be dancing
into the scene, carrying it on her shoulder so it just can’t be too big.

If you have one that you can lend to us (we will take good care of it) or
want to offload, please let me know.

Thanks so much!

[LincolnTalk] Bluebird midwifery advice

2023-04-15 Thread Staci Montori
Hi LT,

Sadly, an aggressive house sparrow (HOSP) took up residence in our bluebird
nesting boxes and destroyed the eggs in the recent nest and drove the
nesting pair away.

For the last 5 years, I have had great success (3 broods every season) with
my non-violent HOSP deterrent methods—Sparrow Spooker and fishing filament.
I am pretty devastated it didn't work this year and wonder what I should do
now. One, with the nesting HOSP. And two, how to proceed for the rest of
the spring to try to entice the bluebirds back to a safe nesting area.

I am considering changing the boxes out to ones that are more sparrow
proof. If anyone has had a similar issue and has had good success with
certain boxes & preferably with deterrent methods vs. extermination, please
advise. (I am interested in hearing all methods, though as I don't want to
take the boxes down, nor do I want to help increase the invasive HOSP
population.)

Thank you,
Staci

Re: [LincolnTalk] MBTA Vision

2023-04-20 Thread Staci Montori
Hi Rich,
I beg to differ- I take the Acela regularly and it’s plenty speedy and
efficient for me. Way better than driving to DC and NYC. However, if
higher speeds matter to you, you may want to check out Florida’s Brightline
system. I think they were testing 110 mph trips recently. Our family
friends utilize it regularly. It has completely changed their commutes and
their quality of life. I think Brightline’s next planned expansion may be
Vegas to LA.

I agree we are SO behind in our train infrastructure (passenger rail having
to share tracks with cargo is crazy) but I am optimistic it is getting
better. Finally, money is going back into Amtrak, as well. Upgrades are
happening and routes are being restored. As a very committed train traveler
(I stopped flying 5 years ago to reduce my carbon footprint) I am feeling
more hopeful about our train systems recently! My last two cross country
train trips would have arrived early, had it not been for the unhoused
population that slowed us down outside of Berkeley, California. Sadly, the
lack of housing has forced so many people to live along the tracks, causing
the train to slow down and stop a bunch.

As a South Lincoln resident I would be thrilled to see more dense, net zero
energy housing centered around the train stop and Lincoln Station. I think
it would attract more people and families that care about the land, their
carbon footprint and make Lincoln a more vibrant, ecologically sound,
inclusive and interesting place to live!

[LincolnTalk] A Midsummers Night Circus is coming to town & selling out fast!

2023-07-25 Thread Staci Montori
Hi Friends,

Circus Smirkus is coming to town (at the Gore Place in Waltham) this week
and if you hope to see it, get your tickets asap. Three shows are
completely sold out and the others are filling fast. Due to popular demand,
Smirkus has added an additional evening show on Thursday, so this may have
the most availability. I personally recommend the evening shows- the
costumes pop and the set really becomes magical.

Here is a link to a trailer if you want to take a peek:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08CHzE_b4zc.

My daughter is a second year trouper and I will be ushering each show. If
you want me to try to save good seats, just let me know. I can usually do
this without a problem if you let me know in advance & if you arrive a bit
early to put something down on your seats to 'save them'. This year, kids
are allowed to be around the ring again which makes it way more fun for
them and less squishy in the risers. Also, I hear there might be AC for the
Waltham shows. (It was crazy hot last year!)

The show is quite different this year. A bit more theater (yes-
Shakespeare) with cirque. There are only kids in the ring this time- ages
11-18. The costumes are amazing, the music is fantastic and the circus acts
are super thrilling and fun!

I hope to see some of you there.

Warm regards,
Staci

I am wondering if any of you would be willing to lend me a removable car

I am traveling to RI for a few days and want to bring two bikes.
I prefer to borrow vs purchasing a new one for this short trip.
I promise to take good care of it. :)
Thank you in advance for any help with this.

I love reading this thread. Thank you! Some good zero waste products are

store manager, Jason. With the new ownership, Jason has the green light to
bring in more products that eliminate and reduce our plastic consumption.
We are currently compiling a list of our favorites for him, such as laundry
strips, shampoo bars, compostable utensils, etc.. Please share with me any
of your favorites that you would like to see on the Donelan's shelves and I
can add them to our wish list! Also, please check out the cans of bottle
water, Simply Rain in recyclable, highly sought after aluminum. I am super
grateful that he quickly stocked this product per my request. (I was able
to easily bring several cases of plastic free water to my son's baseball
games for the team.)
Send me your favorites if you can!

Re: [LincolnTalk] Drought suggestions

2022-07-25 Thread Staci Montori
Hi! Being a native Californian I know the drought protocols so well. First
and foremost, super short showers, turning the water off between shampoo,
shaving, no brushing teeth in showers, and no baths except if multiple
people use it. Have a bucket in the shower to catch water and then use this
on favorite suffering plants. Only flush the toilet when absolutely
necessary. “If it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down.” Is
a childhood mantra for any one raised there! Always have rain barrels catch
every precious precipitation drop. Fill bird baths with water from your
rain barrels. Put indoor plants outside during a shower.
I really didn’t think I would be doing this again here in New England- the
rains have always amazed me here and part of the reason I have put roots
down here.
Sadly, Climate Emergency is here and now. And we can’t run to any where and
hide from it. We need to stop burning fossil fuel for a livable planet!
Call Gov. Baker today and get him to sign the Climate Bill on his desk!
Warm regards,
Staci

[LincolnTalk] Swap Shed - A Reminder for ALL

2022-12-10 Thread Staci Montori
Dear Friends,

Please consider the Swap Shed to be a ‘store front’ where everyone is
welcome, the items are free, the return policy is extremely generous, and
everything is relatively clean and in decent condition.

Please do NOT drop off stuff that is dirty, or moldy, or covered in animal
fur, or boxes of stuff with mice droppings, cobwebs, or dead insect
carcasses, or items/toys with missing pieces or broken parts.

Please throw these items into the TRASH if you cannot wipe them down
yourself and make them presentable for someone else to desire.

Thank you!

DO come by soon- there are amazing treasures to be had! So much of the
items are in great condition. It is really fun to see what comes in and
then goes right back out!

Warm regards,

[LincolnTalk] Local Christmas Tree Farm

2024-11-24 Thread Staci Montori
Hi LT,
I’m getting into the holiday spirit a bit early and just discovered a
fantastic “cut your own” Christmas tree farm down the road in Stowe called
Tap Root Tree Farm.
https://www.taproottreefarm.com
They have beautiful trees for sale- several varieties and beautifully cared
for. They farm on the town’s conservation land so it’s a beautiful spot to
visit too.
The farmers (a young couple Jaime and Jesse) and their crew were super
friendly and helpful. The whole experience was so nice that I felt inspired
to share with you all in case you don’t know about it.
Happy Holidays!

Re: [LincolnTalk] Mice

2025-01-30 Thread Staci Montori
Hi Janet,
I had the same thing happen this winter and consulted our pest company and
they wanted to use rodenticides that poison the mice that then poison the
owls and hawks in our yard. 😢Their other solutuon was to use sticky traps
that cause a lot of suffering 😢😢 . So instead I researched it myself &
got these very easy to use snap traps that work supposedly without a lot
of suffering - caught 10 mice in a matter of days- without harming the
raptors in my yard. (Still sad to me 😢but I could not risk having my new
heat pump up in the attic destroyed). Once it warms up I will be having my
handyman figure out where they are getting in and trim back the trees that
are touching my house eaves to prevent them from entering next year.
Here are the traps:
www:intruderinc.com/products/the-better-mousetrap
I have 5 extra traps (unused) that you could use immediately and just
replace for me if you want them today.
Best,
Staci

[LincolnTalk] Save Lincoln Wildlife- first community meeting Monday April 7th 12-1 pm via Zoom

2025-04-05 Thread Staci Montori
Save Lincoln Wildlife! Join Our Movement to Eliminate Harmful Rodent Poisons

Dear Wildlife Advocates and Concerned Citizens,

Are you troubled by the silent threat facing our local ecosystem? Save
Lincoln Wildlife (SLW) invites you to be part of the solution at our
inaugural community meeting on Monday, April 7th from 12-1 PM via Zoom
(Zoom details below). And please spread the word!

Rodenticides are causing devastating consequences throughout our local food
chain. When rodents consume these poisons, they become slow-moving targets
for predators like hawks, owls, foxes, and other wildlife that then suffer
secondary poisoning. This creates a ripple effect through our entire
ecosystem.
Potential Initiatives We'll Discuss:

   -

Developing partnerships with local businesses to adopt wildlife-friendly
   pest control alternatives
   -

Creating compelling educational resources for community outreach
   -

Drafting a citizens petition for the 2026 Town Meeting to regulate
   rodenticide use

Can't Make It? Even if you can't attend the Zoom meeting, there are several
ways to get involved:

   -

Join our Save Lincoln Wildlife Facebook group for updates and discussions
   -

   Visit our website: www.savelincolnwildlife.org
   -

   Connect via email: i...@savelincolnwildlife.org
