2023-02-22 Thread Belinda Gingrich
Several people have said 12 on Tuesday isn’t a good time and asked if we will
be recording this presentation. We will be recording it and posting it to our
website, lincolngreenenergy.org . If you
register for the lecture we will also send a link to the video via email.

Below is also a link to yesterday’s recording of the Envelope with great case
studies.

[LincolnTalk] Heat pump technology

2023-02-22 Thread Nancy Selvage
I have recent experience researching and getting bids for air to water heat
exchangers to replace propane for heating water for a baseboard hydronic
system.
Advanced Mechanical gave me a bid for a Spacepak Chiller PLUS a new propane
system for back up when it was too cold for the Spacepak Chiller to maintain
high enough water temperatures.
Partridge Hill Mechanical gave me a bid for an Enertech Advantage air to water
heat exchanger PLUS a new propane system for back up when it was too cold.
Hartmann HVAC Solutions let me know that LG had a double condensing air to
water system that could produce higher water temperatures than the other
options.
However, that unit was not yet available in the US except in a three-phase
wiring model.
Since you need hot water for a radiant heat system, you do not need as high a
temperature as a baseboard system does, so what is available now might be OK
for you.
I would recommend consulting with Hartmann HVAC Solutions about options.

[LincolnTalk] Disappointed

2023-02-22 Thread Christi Damico
Chris—simply stated— this is not enough. I am sorry, to be so blunt. This is a
fall back position, in my opinion. You need to go in with a full effort
against expansion & negotiate from there if you must. I’m surprised and
disappointed. Please rethink your strategy! This one is not strong enough to
win, and you never start a negotiation from a fall back position, right?
Unless you plan to lose.

Christi Damico
Of the Mill Street Damico’s of Lincoln

“I?ve been working with Senator Barrett and other local leaders on a response
to the large North Airfield expansion. This project aims to create 495,000
square feet of hangar space for corporate and private jets on the north side of
Hanscom Field. Massport and the developers have expressed concern for the
environment and indicated it will be done in an environmentally friendly way.

We plan to hold them to their word and are asking the state Executive Office of
Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) to require that all aircraft based in
the new hangars operate entirely without use of fossil fuels.

One option this would leave the developers is to base electric aircraft here.
While not quite here, there are about 200 companies trying to produce electric
aircraft and some are very close to production.

Area leaders and residents have many concerns about this project but we are
staying laser focussed on the climate change impact resulting from expanded use
of private jets. We think this is our best strategy based on experience from
many previous expansion projects.

Hi Ursula,
Thank you. I am on my way to work now and won't get home until after 5 p.m. We
have only one car, so my husband cannot pick them up.
Is anyone on here going to the transfer station today? If so and you have room,
could you please pick out two (preferably, but not necessarily matching)
kitchen table/dining chairs, then email me? I would be so ever grateful.
Thank you,

*Masks now optional in the Lincoln Public Library*

The Lincoln Board of Health (BOH) voted to rescind the town-wide indoor
mask mandate effective Monday, March 14, 2022, in response to substantially
improved and positively trending public health data, including Lincoln’s
high vaccination rate.

Residents with weakened immune systems or at increased risk of severe
Covid-19 disease because of age or medical conditions, or who have a
household member at such increased risk, are advised by the Lincoln BOH and
the Commonwealth’s Department of Public Health (DPH) to continue to wear a
mask when indoors other than in their home, even if they are vaccinated.

We encourage the public to continue to wear masks in accordance with their
own comfort level and in compliance with the DPH guidelines cited above.
Private establishments may continue to *require masks upon entry.*

*Updated indoor mask use recommendation as of April 14, 2022*: “Due to
recent data showing an increase in positive COVID-19 cases, the Board of
Health members voted last night to strongly recommend that people wear
masks in public indoor spaces until early May as we see how the infection

vacation.”

Re: [LincolnTalk] Disappointed

2023-02-22 Thread Sara Mattes
Even with non-fossil fuels still are facing an environmental assault with the
proposed development.
there will still be 445,000 sq. Feet of impervious surface-black tarmac.
There will still be the elimination of hundreds of trees and a vastly reduced
carbon sink.
There will still be 767s hurtling over homes, Great Meadows, Minuteman National
Historical Park.
There will still be fuel farms adjacent to a residential neighborhood.

Perhaps we can be more bold and consider limiting the use of private jets such
as these, the type of customers Massport seeks to attract.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Disappointed

2023-02-22 Thread Anne Sobol
This is the comment I submitted to MEPA:

The record submitted provides no documentation for the need for what
appears to be a speculative commercial project.

The expansion of private jet traffic at Hanscom is inconsistent with our
local efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels and to protect the
environment.

The expansion of emissions-heavy, private jet traffic will despoil wildlife
and natural habitat in the Great Meadows National Wildlife Preserve and the
Minute Man National Historical Park. It also endangers human beings
enjoying these preserves.

A fuel tank farm will endanger the residential neighborhood around the
proposed project.

Whose interests does MassPort represent? Its own financial interests at
the expense of local Massachusetts citizens? The interests of speculative
commercial businesses at the expense of local Massachusetts citizens, their
families, and their children?

The MassPort website states that MassPort “is dedicated to the vibrant
neighborhoods around us.” If that is true, MassPort should not be
promoting the expansion of the private jet facility at Hanscom.

Expanding facilities for private jet usage is inconsistent with the goals
set forth by MassPort in its Climate Action Plan: Net Zero by 2031.

[LincolnTalk] Another reason we must resist the proposed Hanscom expansion

2023-02-22 Thread Sara Mattes
While the focus here is on smaller, piston planes, the saga is instructive.
While we may all dream of fossil-free fuel, history suggests it will be decades
before it is a reality.
And, in the meantime, 27 hangers will be housing privately owned 737s,757s, and
767s who will be taking to the skies…over all our heads.

BY ARIANNA SKIBELL

Small airplanes and choppers flying overhead Veronica Licon’s house in San
Jose, Calif., run on leaded gasoline. | Photos by Max Whittaker for POLITICO

The United States banned leaded gasoline for cars long ago, but smaller
aircraft continue to use the fuel — and it’s exposing hundreds of thousands of
children to lead poisoning.

POLITICO’s E&E News reporter Ariel Wittenberg dug into the issue in an
investigation

this week. She found that fuel producers such as Chevron and Exxon Mobil have
repeatedly blocked efforts to create unleaded fuels for small aircraft.

That has led to massive health consequences for children who live below the
flight path of these small airplanes. Toddlers in California's East San Jose
have concentrations of lead in their blood on par with children tested at the
height of the drinking water crisis in Flint, Mich.

In an interview with Power Switch this morning, Ariel breaks down the public
health crisis and why, after 30 years, it has not been addressed.

What surprised you the most in reporting this story?

Everyone from the [Federal Aviation Administration] to the oil industry to the
aviation industry has spent the past 30 years pursuing a silver-bullet solution
to this problem. What surprised me most is that search has, essentially, been a
mirage. Yes, there are many planes that need 100 octane. But 70 percent of the
general aviation fleet could fly on a lower-octane fuel. But the aviation and
fuel industry has blocked multiple alternative fuels over the past 30 years.

What are the advantages and pitfalls of having producers like Chevron and Exxon
sit on the committee that could have approved a less heavily leaded fuel?

The people who make aviation fuel know how to make aviation fuel. It’s a niche
market, so the producers are also the best subject-matter experts. The problem,
however, is that the [committee] that approves these fuels runs on consensus.
The same producers that have a vested financial interest in keeping lead in
aviation fuel also have immense power to block any unleaded competition from
coming to market.

What is the extent of the health-related damage?

There are 5.2 million people that live within 500 meters of an airport runway,
and 363,000 of them are children under five. Research has shown that living
that close to a general aviation airport can increase levels of lead in kids’
blood. Lead is a neurotoxin that impairs cognitive development and is linked to
lower IQ, so any exposure to it can be incredibly damaging.

Communities are demanding the government take action. When can we realistically
expect the problem to be resolved?

It's hard to say when this will all be resolved. If EPA does move to totally
ban lead in aviation fuel, it could be years before such a measure would take
effect. The FAA has an initiative in coordination with the aviation and fuel
industries to find a high-octane unleaded fuel, with the goal of one being
widely available by 2030. But similar initiatives have existed over the past
decade, and all of them have blown through their deadlines.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

A fuel tank farm will endanger the residential neighborhood around the proposed

The MassPort website states that MassPort “is dedicated to the vibrant

Expanding facilities for private jet usage is inconsistent with the goals set

2023-02-22 Thread Christi Damico
The impacts to Minuteman National Park, the cradle of our nation's birth, would
be intolerable if this expansion were to go through.

The goal of the Park is to create and maintain an environ as similar as
possible to what life was like at the time of the American Revolution. It is a
national treasure.

I cannot imagine the disruption to the Park that the proposed expansion would
create. It would decimate the experience for users of the park, and that would
be a travesty. We have a responsibility to protect our history, and expanding
this airport for commercial and private usage would be doing the exact opposite
of that.

Chris I'm sorry I'm not 100% on board with your focus, but I appreciate your
efforts just the same. I am absolutely committed to our environment... but I'm
not sure "laser focus" on that one horse will win the entire race.

Let me know how I can help.

Thanks,
Christi Damico
