vim vagaries

2009-11-10 Thread J.
Hi Again evrey body, I'm happy to say that with because of the help you gave me
I was not only able to get jedit up and running for lilypond but was
encouraged to succede in setting up emacs too!
Vim though is somthing else.
I looked at the directions on the lilypond site for setting it up but, because
of my noviciate I got confused with all the places and symbols.
i.e. can you add all the lilpond things into the place where vim is
(/user/bin/share/vim) or have to make a ~/.vim and how does one modify the
files when the're found. [Whew!]
Would appreciat some help like you gave last time.

Lilypond incipits

2009-11-19 Thread J.
Hi every one and thank you all again for the advice on the text editors.
If some one can help or point me to documentation in how to make 20 note
incipits in Lilypond for a large folk song collection I am working to publish
from the linux computer I have inherited.
I want to take the opening phrase of each one and create an index which I want
to print as a work referance and later to incorporate it into the book.
Thank you all in advance.

Mark,

Setting the line-width indeed solved my problem.
Thank you!

RE: GTK and LilyPond

2007-09-12 Thread J L

Hi,

This sounds like a case of .dll hell.

There are a few things that you can try doing:
1) Changing the order of paths to lilypond and/or gtk libs in your PATH variable
2) About the renaming of the .dlls that the installer asks you to do: LET IT DO
IT! LilyPond will cope fine with that, as I've done that here when I was
installing a standalone GTK package for GIMP.

The conflicting .dlls are ones that both LilyPond and GTK use (I think they're
standard GNU libraries, so that would explain a lot).

Hope that helps,
Aligorith

Subject: GTK and LilyPond

I use LilyPond 2.10.29 on Windows 2000.

I've long noticed that installing the GTK separately from LilyPond (as it is
needed for other programs) sometimes causes problems (and so does installing
LilyPond after installing the separate GTK).

Is it possible to get a distribution of LilyPond that doesn't have the GTK or
GTK elements bundled, but rather just relies on the one already installed?

Anyway, whenever I install LilyPond, GIMP doesn't work anymore because of
something to do with this.

When I installed the separate GTK afterward (and then GIMP), this time at
least, LilyPond was behaving 'strangely' (the computer slowed down
tremendously, even after all the programs stopped running, and almost crashed;
I had to restart it to get it back to normal). GIMP works fine in this case,
though (until I install a new version of LilyPond).

I know something that could potentially fix the problem, but I'm a little
afraid to try. When I install the GTK (with LilyPond already there), it asks
me if I want to rename some of the LilyPond files (I've always said no). Will
LilyPond still work if I rename these files?

Measure runs off PDF file after 5 8th notes in 4/4 time

2007-11-01 Thread John J
It isn't easy to search the archive for this bizarre
problem. Everything was
working fine until the moment it stopped working.
Before, everything lived up
to the hype and I was happy, after, I just keep trying
things without anything
working. The first line of this piece, lilypond
prints 5 measures.  The second
line has 14.5 measures and they are crammed with
notes. The last line has 6 measures
of notes followed by an empty measure in all three
parts and then pianoRH has continuing
staff lines. I have measure checks in the piece and
all pass even at the final
measure of 32 bars. I tried adding empty measures to
pianoLH and clarinet but that shortened
pianoRH by an empty measure. I am using 2.11.33 now
after using 2.10.33 with no change.
I have specified the paper size with no change in the
output. If anyone has seen anything
like this, I would be happy to know how to work around
it. FYI, the midi plays correctly and the PS version
is
identically messed up. I am running Ubuntu linux and
both 704 and 710 work the same.

2007-11-03 Thread John J
Thanks for the help on this issue without even looking
at the source. I added measure checks for every
measure until it cleaned up. As Trevor says there was
a long measure that caused the problem and now I'm
back to working on the music. I had one other email
that also mentioned this as the likely source and
grateful for the quick and accurate response the I got
from the list.

Few more questions from a beginner

2008-01-02 Thread J. Cohen
I've managed to get this far on Lachrimae from the help that people on
the list have provided so far:
http://www.guitarmiami.com/tank/lachrimae.ly
http://www.guitarmiami.com/tank/lachrimae.pdf

I haven't been able to figure out a few things:

* Put some naturals in parentheses (e.g., measures 8 and 9)

* Move rests to correct height. Many of the rests aren't appearing at
the same height as their voices. (e.g., measures 3 and 7)

* In 4/4 isn't it better to break 8th notes into groups of two instead
of groups of four? (e.g., last measure) Is it possible to do that in
Lilypond?

* Some of the notes are stacked on top of each other. (e.g., measure 4)
 Should I just use padding to move each note individually?

Windows Installer 2.6.0 and Ptyhon Scripts

2005-07-01 Thread J L

Hi,

I've recently downloaded the 2.6.0 windows installer and am glad to see that
some progress has been made in trying to get the Python scripts functional.

Regarding the context-menu or the menu that pops up on right-clicking a .ly
file, the lilywins command should be modified to: (extension removed from
/bin/lily-wins)

C:\cygwin\bin\bash.exe --login -c '/bin/lily-wins "%1"'

I have also modified mine so that convert-ly is easily usable. The path to
the python interpreter and the path to LilyPond should be dealt with by the
installer.
"C:\Python24\Python.exe" "C:\Program Files\LilyPond\usr\bin\convert-ly.py"
-e  "%1"

Also, it would be helpful to add
sys.stdin.readline()
statements in the python scripts in places where they are likely to
terminate, to make them more userfriendly.

Install and Running Windows Native 2.6.0

2005-07-08 Thread Trent J

Good Afternoon all,

I have just install the native Lilypond 2.6.0 and am currently having
diffulty in accessing all the features of the program. First of all I
discovered that installing the program in the usually "Program Files"
directory causes problems later on because of the space in the folder names.
I sorted this out by installing it in just c:\lilypond the drag drop feature
works fine now.

But my problems come after trying to do anything besides the drag the file
over to the lilypond icon and produce a PDF.

1: How do you run the convert-ly program? Ms-Dos shell recognises no
program.

2: How do you change the default lilypad editor??
3: The VIM files also seem to be missing from this release.

There seems to be no Windows specific documentation so I have no idea how to
get everything up and running.

Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. Someone contacted my a while ago about beefing up the figured bass mode
in lilypond. I would still like this to happen but never received any
contact back after answering their email.

Regards,

Trent

Figured Bass Improvements Potential Sponsorship of Improving this Feature.

2005-07-11 Thread Trent J
Dear All,
Currently I am thinking about sponsoring the improvement of the figured bass system within LilyPond.
The Main features that I am proposing are:
1: The alignment of the figures are calcuated from the top of the figured group and spaced appropriately from the bottom of the note they appear under. i.e. the figures will be placed dynamically from the bass note rather than the current method of aligning along a baseline based on the number of figures. Also the same facility to place the figures above the continuo part and again dynamically spaced from the note to avoid collisions.
2: The introduction of spanner lines. These are used mainly in french baroque music as well as some sacred music scores. They indicate the prolongation of a figure or group of figures. e.g
6   --
4   --
2  ---
or
6
4 -
2
indicating the entire group to be prolonged.
or
6 ---
5 --3
2 -
indicating that the 6th and 2nd stay the same but the 5th moved to a 3rd.
3. Lastly that the figures are centred on the number with modifying accidentals placed on either side. Also accidentals by themselves can be used eg.
#
5
indicating a sharpened 3rd.
If anyone else has ideas or wishes to contribute to the funding of this feature please contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED].
Regards,
Trent Johnston

Figured Bass Above Bass line

Re: Figured Bass Above Bass line

2005-07-18 Thread Trent J

Thanx Mats,
I'll give it a try tonight. Yes the description for the figured bass is a bit cryptic where the manual and regression test seem to differ. Also the examples give tend only to involve a direct score generation with no 'instrument' variables as you would normally generate so knowing what to put where is sometimes difficult.
I tend to generate templates from previous scores so once I get this score working I'll use this as a basis for instrumental scores with a figured bass. I only have to add instruments as needed the rest of the setup is there. Maybe there could be a facility where people could share templates etc it might make grasping the technicalities of lilypond a little easier if people could start by entering music instead of figuring out the coding a score.

Re: Figured Bass Above Bass line

2005-07-18 Thread Trent J

Thanks Laura,
I've been to the muptopia site, but unfortunately it's a matter of finding a score typeset with the current version your working on. Convert-ly does some of the job but then there some manual recoding that needs to be done, which can prove just as scarey as starting with a blank file. (I must admit it was a steep learning curve installing python and using the python scripts in the 2.6 windows version).
I suppose the template site would become a bit of a white elephant having to continully reformat code for each version of lilypond as it evolves. I guess that's why the examples in the manual and regression test are usually on the simple side.
Meanwhile I haven't seen much music typeset and published via lilypond.The most comprehensive example I have seen is Handel's - Guilo Cesare... but unfortunately the code is so old that it doesn't help with producing scores with current versions of lilypond.We are lucky that there are such people who are readily able to help those of us who can into trouble every now and again.
Thanks again to all..

RE: Windows command prompt and lilypond 2.6 native windows

2005-07-19 Thread Trent J

Yes I had the same problems with native lilypond but there are some work arounds.
Setting path to lilypond.exe doesn't work as there are some problems later with missing files that are there.
The way I use jEdit with Lilypond is to load the file into jEdit. I press the make lilypond file icon. It has a fit because it can't find bash (even if you have the native mode clicked). This leaves the console window open from wich you can type:
"C:\Lilypond\usr\bin\Lillypond" "C:\Scores\01Son.ly"
You need the quote marks the first is a direct path to where your lilypond.exe is installed and the next quoted item is the direct path of the file name. You don't have to retype this everytime you wish to make the pdf just use the arrow up and it will remember your list command (similar to dos)

Re: Windows command prompt and lilypond 2.6 native windows

2005-07-19 Thread Trent J

<>.
Yes there is, hopefully the kinks will be worked out but there are work arounds in the meantime. Although I find the processing to be slow so that bar by bar entry takes up too much time. Haven't been able to get the linux version of lilypond working (some libc++ library is missing... and I'm not brave enough to compile the thing myself...) to compare the speeds of the version.
Point and Click is still a no go with jEdit but it's fairly simple to have line numbers displayed in jEdit and all you have to do is hover the mouse of over the note in the PDF to find the line number where that note is on.
I've also noted that the windows version of Lilypond has problems with spaces in names of folders and files. So I install in C:\Lilypond directory and not the program files. I was able to get point and click working with VIM but again you needed to install Vim in a directory with no spaces e.g. C:\Vim\
I am still wondering whether the 'native' version of Lilypond should only be aimed at beginners to it's simple drag and drop interface (although to get the conversion programs with python is a steep learning curve) and the windows cgywin for advanced users offering all the bells and whistles. If I could get the linux version up and running I would use it. But might have to wait for a new version for that to happen. But in the meantime windows and native does work .. there's just a bit of coercion needed.

Ancient Time Signatures.

2005-09-04 Thread Trent J
Hi All..
Just a quick question with ancient time signatures. Looking a works by Frescobaldi and Monteverdi they use the old proportional time scheme. They use a mixture of ancient clefs and numbers .. e.g.  O3 but there is no time signature setting for this so I guess this needs to be created with a markup... how would I go about this. To hide the time signature eg 3/1 use the ancient time signature 03.
Would this also generate a curteousy time singnature if the change began in the beginning of a new line or page like the normal time signatures?
Any help appreciated.

PDF Viewing / Updating a score

2005-09-12 Thread Trent J
Hello everyone,

Firstly the required out the way:

Platform: Windows XP
Lilypond Version: 2.7.8

I have been using the new version(s) of Lilypond for a while and I find the us of PDF file a little annoying especially when fine tuning a score. You have to remember to close out of the current document before you run lilypond as the current scheme is to delete the old pdf and make the new one. So if you fail to close the score your viewing in the PDF viewer before you compile you receive an error message which means going through the sequence again remembering this time to close the document in the pdf viewer.

While this is only a minor quible it becomes more noticeable when editing a large score i.e. across many pages. To make a simple adjustment say the padding of slur or dynamic this becomes frustrating as you need to close down the pdf file, make the adjustment and then manually load newly generated pdf back into the pdf viewer and then try and find the page and staff to where you made the adjustment. This can be very annoying and slow down the work rate especially when you are making guesses to padding / layout / making lyric corrections etc.

I know in the older versions of lilypond a dvi viewer could be used as a fast an easy way to make changes. Since the newer versions only produce a .ps file and .pdf file this it out of the question. I tried using 'gsview' with the .ps file but gsview complains that there too many errors and won't display the music. I use gsview all the time especially when entering music with PMX/Musixtex and can have the .ps loaded all the time and when I update the score it refreshes the screen with the changes made while retaining the same view of the same page I was working on. This makes fine tuning scores much simplier and time efficient.

Is there a way to use the .ps file with gsview I know I won't be able to use point and click but since I usually number all the bars in a score I don't see this as problem and if things get a little tricky I can always go back to the pdf score to find the offending line. I don't use point and click as it is but simply use the pointer to give me the line number to go back to file to find.

Any hints / help appreciated.

Regards,

Trent

Re: PDF Viewing / Updating a score

2005-09-13 Thread Trent J

Hi Bertalan,
Thanks for your reply.
Using the PDF file is not possible for updating since Lilypond deletes the old PDF before writing the new one which means closing the pdf before running lilypond. So viewing the postscript file is the way to go. As I said before gsview for some reason is unable to display lilypond .ps files and as far as I can see is really the only postscript viewer for windows.
VSD replied earlier saying there was a view postscript command in lily4jedit which I use with lilypond. He said that this is doesn't work with the latest lily4jedit version (0.2.8-6) which I'm also using... with windows native version 2.7 of lilypond.

It does.. I've tried using gsview to view the pdf which works.. but when lilypond is run again to update the score ... lilypond stops with a permission error which indicates that the pdf file is being deleted before the new one is created.

Re: Ghostscript/GSview problems

2005-09-19 Thread Trent J

Had the same problem here...
I sent an email to lilypond-devel about this so did Mats Bengtsson. I think this is a gsview problem not a lilypond problem as the .ps file is readable in another PS viewer program... a commercial one.. can't remember it's exact name but the program was unable to watch a file and update when changes were made... so no different than viewing via PDF.
I checked via ghostscipt program and was able to make a pdf version of the postscript file via ps2pdf so ghostscript (not the viewer) is able to use the file.
My guess is that gsview many have problems with the certain tags in the file etc. I'm awaiting a response to my question on lilypond-devel as to whether to contact the makers of gsview.. just in case it is a lilypond problem...

looking for other versions of gsview. When I say native windows, I mean
using the pango library, not using cygwin.

No Dynamics in Midi

2005-10-04 Thread J L

Hi,

I was wondering how I might go about making dynamic markings
(dyanmic-scripts, crescendi + decrescendi) to not have an impact on midi
output. Of course I could just have duplicate sets of data, one set with
dynamics, one set without.

FiguredBass - Thank You.

Hello All,
I'd like to thank Han-Wen for his work in implementing the new figured bass scheme in Lilypond. There was a lot of hard work put into this which has resulted in an easy way in which figuredbass numbers and extender lines can be added and formatted.
I would encourage anyone who uses starts using the FiguredBass system or updates their scores to use the system to consider making a donation to further the development of Lilypond.
Thanks again

breakbefore / StaffGroup / Opus Marking -- Not working is it a bug? (2.7.12)

2005-10-11 Thread Trent J
Hi All,

I don't know whether these are bugs or not so I've sent it here first.

The breakbefore = ##t command doesn't seem to work when I put it in a header to force a page break.. for that matter... if I put "pagebreakbefore"... "gobblygoppagebreakbefore" (yes I put that line as I was so frustrated) Lilypond doesn't even seem to register that the last two words are a mistake. Is the program ignoring what is in the header?

Also with the first header with titles and composer and opus. The titles composer and opus are printed correctly on the first page but for some reason the opus is printed on each subsequent new score for no apparent reason.

Lastly the StaffGroup function seems only to work with the first group it comes across now. In scores processed from previous versions my staff groups print fine with the bracket around each group. But for some reason only the first staff group defined in a score prints with a bracket.

I'm using Windows XP / Lilypond 2.7.12 (Native)

Thanks in advance.

Re: Slurs around tuplets / tuplets inside staff - Could this be asponsored feature??

2005-12-19 Thread Trent J

Hi David,
Just in reply to your statement
>>> This used to be popular but it is a bad idea because you can't tell>>> whether there is really supposed to be any slurring or not.
I realise this but I typeset baroque and classical scores where a slur is often placed around the tuplet number. As for trying to figure out whether it is a 'slur' or 'a group' I leave this to the performer(s) since I'm trying to make the score as faithful to the original edition as possible -- an urtext. The feature which I've sponsored isn't a mandatory feature but simply one that users can switch on or off when editing baroque and classical works or any other works for that matter.

LilyPond 2.7.32 File Sizes

2006-02-09 Thread J L

Hi,

I think that it has been mentioned several times before that the current
LilyPond CVS versions produce PDF's with large file sizes. The culprit is
the embedding of some fonts roughly 20 to 30 times (or once for each
character that uses that font?). However, LilyPond's own Feta font doesn't
seem to be one of these. Pango problems???

Re: Putting Lyrics between barlines / Lyrics and \appogiatura

2006-02-12 Thread Trent J

Thanks again Thies. I think I replied both to you and the group on this.
My main reason for getting the lyrics between the barlines was that they often hung outside the bar on the right hand side of the page. Even more so if there was an extender line with the lyric.
I tried the newly documented
\override Score.PaperColumn #'keep-inside-line = ##t
but the change was very minimal. On reading the manual again I noticed that this is only a help with placing objects "within the margins". So I assume that there is some white space around the left and right side of a music stave.

Trent

But I also wouldn't have expected any bar lines in lyric context when adding a
Bar_engraver.On the other side: I wouldn't mind lyrics crossing bar lines (and hence not add any Bar_engraver) as long as there are no visible bar lines (like when using a StaffGroup).For being a bug or not once more: I found the following for the definition of context Lyrics within engraver_init.ly (so there might be a reason for bar line relics):   %% make sure that barlines aren't collapsed, when   %% Bar_engraver is there.   \override BarLine #'bar-size = #0.1Kind regards,Thies Albrecht___lilypond-user mailing listlilypond-user@gnu.orghttp://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user

What's up with this list

2006-03-02 Thread J L

Hi,

Yesterday (Feb 28) there was hardly anything coming through, and today (Mar
1) I got a the same message several times. What's going on? Buggy
mailing-list software, rouge hackers, etc...

Earlier this week, many messages had been arriving in ad-havok fasion.

Same thing with the lilypond-devel list.

Sponsorship - Better Incipits / Ossai Staves.

2006-07-26 Thread Trent J

Hi All,

This email is mainly directed at Han-Wen but if others have ideas and
suggestions then please don't hesitate.

I'm looking to sponsor two features:

1: Better support for Incipits: looking at the current way of preparing
incipits there isn't a way to restart the staff again e.g. to show the staff
brackets etc to let reader know that the incipit ends and the staff
restarts. Also there has be an incipit for the whole staff regardless of
whether the clef or not values have changed or not. I've been trying
examples of using markups to produce the incipit for a particular staff and
then using manual overrides to shift it down and before the staff. As you
can imagine this takes a lot of trial and error and can be quite time
consuming to get one done let alone more.

2: The second feature is a better way to prepare ossia staves. I prepare a
lot of baroque music and sometimes there a shortcuts in the notation for
example: chords that should be played in the same way as the preceding bars.
A fully functioning ossai stave would be beneficial.

Any thoughts and feedback appreciated.

Regards,

Trent Johnston

RE: Strange page break

2006-08-16 Thread Trent J

Hi Robert,

I've noticed the same bug in 2.9.13 page breaks are happening in odd places.
I have a score of 4 instruments where on the second page there is only one
system printed and a new page is started. It's clear that more systems could
have fitted.

I've forwarded this to bug-lilypond as well.

Hi all,

I can't find the reason why there's a pagebreak
after the first system on page 2 of my score.
According to "annotate-spacing" there is enough space
for a second system (like on the other pages).

Could someone please have a look at the
source file below?

I'm using 2.9.14 (Linux)

Using lilypond-windows with local ghostscript

2006-08-19 Thread J L

Hi,

I was wondering if it is possible to use lilypond on windows with a locally
installed version of ghostscript (i.e. a more up-to-date version in another
directory)? What files would I need to modify to get this to work?

The version of lilypond is the 2.8.x series on windows xp

RE: Problem with \markup { \score } quitting after first measure

2006-09-20 Thread Trent J

Hi Rick,

Hi just had a look at your code and it seems that the system-count = #2 in
the main document layout block is the problem. If your remove the
'system-count' and replace with a \break where the system-count function was
providing the break (end of bar 5) and re-run both bars of the ossia staff
will display.

v2.9.17

I believe I have uncovered a bug when using the \markup { \score { ... } }
capability. In the following example I assign a markup score of 2 measures
to a variable called "varFreeFormOssia". Then in the main music I apply
that markup variable to a note. I would expect 2 measures of markup score
to print, however only the first measure shows up. To confirm that my
markup score is ok, it prints 2 measures just fine when it is run as a
stand-alone score not in markup.

This example will run as-is and demonstrates the possible "bug", I wanted
somebody to maybe confirm that this is a bug before I post it there?

thanks
Rick

\afterGrace - afterGraceFraction [Lilypond 2.10.0 Windows]

2006-11-15 Thread Trent J

Hello,

I'm not sure whether I'm doing this right but the manual states to change
the fraction of an afterGrace note(s):

The fraction 3/4 can be changed by setting afterGraceFraction, ie.

afterGraceFraction = #(cons 7 8). By setting does it mean \set
afterGraceFraction = #(cons 7 8).

I've tried this and keep running into the following message from Lilypond:

warning: can't find property type-check for `afterGraceFraction'
(translation-type?).  perhaps a typing error?

warning: doing assignment anyway

Any help appreciated.

We no longer look at VerticalAxisGroup #'Y-extent when it comes to
vertically aligning systems (this is so that we can take the outline of the
system into account, not just its maximum size). You can still use
minimum-Y-extent, though.

I've been playing around with getting more even output from Lilypond same

number
of systems per page and the same space between staves.

I've even managed in a Concerto Grosso score to have a seperate different
space
between the concertino groups and ripieno groups all the way through the
piece.

Staff.VerticalAxisGroup #'Y-extent is probably not the best way to do this.
If you just want to have fixed distances between all the systems throughout
the piece, have a look at the
alignment-vertical-manual-setting.lyregression
test.
==

Thanks for your help. I'd had gotten good page fill and SCORE like output by
being able to manually fix the staff distances. I might stick with the
earlier version for now.

With the vertical-manual-setting - can this be set once for the entire
piece? At the moment you have to set it for every system break. Setting this
once for the entire piece or until a different setting is specified would be
good.

You can set it in the layout block:
\version "2.10.0"

\layout {
 \context {
   \Score
   \override NonMusicalPaperColumn
   #'line-break-system-details = #'((alignment-offsets . (#f #f
-30)))
 }
}

If you want to change it mid-piece, you can use \override instead of
\overrideProperty, but I think you have to do the \override one timestep
before you want it to take effect.

Thanks Joe this works perfectly. I'll have to download the lastest version
now and play with all the new features.

Thanks for your help and the excellent features you've added to Lilypond.

Font Troubles (Windows - 2.11.20)

2007-03-14 Thread J L

Hi,

I seem to be getting two types of problems with fonts not working:
1) inside a \lyricsto section of words, I can't seem to get digits to appear
in the output. I'm trying to use the lyrics context to typeset roman
numerals for chord indications under the system.

2) trying to display the chordnames above the stave gives me ghostscript
errors

- MSGOTHIC.ttf (or similar) not found or not able to be used?

Also, while going through the manual (online and pdf), I've noticed that
some of the examples involving different fonts (namely small-caps vs normal)
don't show any difference these days.

Ugly Phrasing Slurs

2004-05-18 Thread J. Garcia
Hello all!

I've had some trouble with phrasing slurs involving
staff changes through line breaks. On the first line,
the slur is normally shaped, but the next is strangely
sloped and far from the staff. Any suggestions? I've
tried messing with slope-limit, height-limit, and
beautiful properties to no avail.

I'm sorry, I couldn't simplify the input file beyond
this.

Help with Lilypond on Windows

2004-06-21 Thread J L
Hi,
Recently I found out about Lilypond. On the homepage there are many good
reports from users of Lilypond. Curious, and wanting a music
layout/typesetting/etc. program that I wouldn't have to spend in the
hundreds or thousands to obtain, I downloaded a copy. Note: I am running a
Windows XP computer, not Linux.

For one thing, the current installation process for Lilypond is clumsy and
troublesome. Can't someone make a proper installer for it?

Is there a possibility that some changes be made to the interface of
Lilypond? Although I've read how normal programming languages (i.e. C, C++)
are not flexible enough, and don't allow users to customize how they want
the output to be, is it possible to have bits of the program that allow it
to load different settings? If this is possible, then hopefully the Cygwin
environment will be dumped in favour of a totally or nearly standalone
Windows program. Also, are there any people out there who are annoyed about
how console windows always terminate when they are finished? This means that
unless it writes all its display to a file, the user can't tell what
problems might have been encountered. This is the first problem I have
running Lilypond, as well as the fact that it doesn't seem to be able to
produce any output (hence the complaint about the Cygwin environment). The
scripts that are supposed to run Lilypond by default don't work at all, and
a bit more luck is gained by directly calling Lilypond-bin.exe. Still,
although the display lasts longer, showing stuff other than the Cygwin
startup stuff, it terminates without any output. I've tried many different
command-line operations to no avail.

Hi,
Can someone tell me how to call the scripts? I know that there is stuff in

Beats left in bar?

2004-08-15 Thread J L
Hi,
Here is a little suggestion from me to make Lilypond a bit easier to use.
Recently, while typesetting some stuff, I encountered this problem:
bar-check failed on 1/4, etc. and spanners unbound. The reason is that I had
given note values longer than the remaining beats in the bar. I was
wondering whether it is possible for some extra code to be added so that
Lilypond would divide the note up so that there would be no problem. (This
may already exist, so please tell me what settings to use in that case)

e.g. in 3/4, I want to insert a tied note lasting 1 minum beat on the last
beat of the bar. Currently, this means that I have to manually write a tie.
To save beginners trouble, this could be useful. Also when composing?

Auto Ties

2004-09-16 Thread J L
Hi,
I remember writing about how I had trouble with entering note values longer
than the remaining measures? in a bar. I realise that there is the
completion_heads_engraver. However, when I tried that, what happened was:
all the doted and syncopated notes within the bar were broken up while the
note that was supposed to be tied over the bar was just left as a minum
(causing a bar-check problem followed by unbound spanners).

I can't remember exactly what file I used, but I think it was this one.
Currently it has the ties added manually. Please point out to me if there is
is something I've missed out that is causing this problem.

Polyphonic Rest Positions and partial \longa

2004-09-18 Thread Trent J
Hello,
I've just started using Lilypond after switching from Sibelius. Lilypond
seems a lot quicker and the set out especially with lyrics is a lot better
and easier to correct.
At the moment I have two questions...
When using spacer notes e.g.

<< { s4 f g g } // { r4 g g g } >>
the rest is always printed above it's usual position. It would be
understandable if there was a note that the rest was trying to avoid but
there isn't anything but a spacer note. How do I get the rest to be it's
original position. I know I can use b4\rest (this is acceptable but very
time consuming in polyphonic music) but the this doesn't work if there is a
multi-bar rest eg.

\time 3/1
<< { s1*0^\markup { \italic "Alla breve"  } s\breve } \\ { R\breve. } >>
the whole bar rest prints down and if I switch the argument
<< { R\breve. } \\ { s1*0^\markup { \italic "Alla breve"  } s\breve } >>
the whole bar rest prints above it's regular position...
so how do I get the whole bar rest to print in the regular position
My second question...
Monteverdi usually ends his pieces with a longa note...
if I add the following regardless of time signature... I always get an extra
bar printed at the end of the piece.

\partial \longa*1 e\longa
i've even tried...
\partial 1*4 e\longa
this still overruns and starts a new bar
Any help is appreciated...
Thanks again...

Lyrics -- Left align a word / wordblock

2004-09-21 Thread Trent J
Hello...
Firstly thanks to those who helped me with my previous question.
My new question is this
Monteverdi (and several other baroque composers and modern ones) can
sometimes put a whole string of text to be sung on the one note...

eg.
g\longa
"Donec ponam inimicos"
what I end up with is the word being centred on the note and it intrudes
quite a lot into the previous bar causing that bar to become overly long as
well

eg..
   |   g   |
"Donec ponam inimicos"
Is there a way that I can align these lyrics so that words are actually left
aligned...

 | g|
 | "Donec ponam inimicos" | etc.
so that the words actually up the space of the bar that it is in.
BTW .. I'm using Lilypond version 2.2.5 under XP Professional...
Thanks again... any help appreciated...

Double Measures - Time Signatures.

2004-09-27 Thread Trent J
Hello
I have a few questions about doubling measures and time signatures.
I currently typesetting Monteverdi's Vespers and have run into some problems
with Monteverdi's notation. I want to keep the original baring and time
signatures as they reflect the phrasing and tempo's of the work (Monteverdi
was still using proportional notation)

My question is this:
Is there a way to double or triple the length of a bars. Monteverdi will set
a time signature of 4/4 but infact it's 8 beats to a bar and also 3/2 which
again is more like 6/1 (6 breves or 12 semibreves to a bar.)

Is it possible to do
\time 4/4 { g4 g4 g4 g4 g4 g4 g4 g4 }* 2/1
or
\time 3/2  { g1 g1 g1 g1 g1 g1 }* 6/1 ??
The reason for this is that Monteverdi can and does move between the 8 beats
in 4/4 time back to 4 beats and back to 8 beats often during a work.

I know I can fiddle around with hiding and using markups for time signatures
etc this causes the excellent Layout properties of Lilypond to become
corrupt.

Using the \cadenzaOn / Off... is also useful but this creates a lot of
problems especially when proof-reading later and \cadenza causes all the
accidentals to stay active...

Thanks for any assistance.
Regards,
Trent

Piano Dynamics Template

2004-09-29 Thread J L
Hi,
Recently I tried to use the piano dynamics template on version 2.2.5.
However, two things went wrong:

1) There is a stave (with 5 lines, clef and time signatures) in between the
two normal staves with dynamics sticking to the bottom of it. This stave is
not supposed to appear. The piece starts in 6/8 and changes time signature
several times. Does it have anything to do with timesignature changes?

2) On this extra stave, the first dynamic always appears at the end of the
bar no matter what values I try to give it.

P.s. I didn't put any pedal markings in.

I’ve been playing around with Lilypond for quite a while now. I’ve been
evaluating it type setting quite a variety of scores – mainly baroque works
instrumental and vocal using both ancient time signatures and notes and have
found the output to be excellent. I've even started using Linux-Fedora (a
big leap from windows) so I can use the latest versions of lilypond.

The only reservations that I have now is the figured bass. I have looked up
several questions people have about this and found a variety of different
figuring which does not seem to work well together.

My questions are these:
Proper alignment of figures eg.
   7
 #3
   2
It’s most important that the sharp on the three be on the left of the number
and not on the right so as not to confuse a sharpened 3rd resolution after
the current figures.

I have tried several markups which never quite able to match these figures
(the figured bass context is too weak to provide the complexity of some
figured bass settings)

The other question is the thin line representing a holding of the previous
part of the figured bass. ie. Some or all of the previous chord is held.

Eg.	5	 ---
   7	 b6 the thin line (  ---  ) indicates that the
5th note should be held while adding the flattened 6th or

6   _
5
indicating that the previous chord is to be held…. This can be held for
either for the next bass notes or a series of bass notes.

Does anyone have a full scheme/way of setting out a figured bass?
Any help in this matter would be appreciated. Are there any plans to
strengthen figured bass support? I would suggest that if there was then
lilypond would possibly be the best notation package available being able to
typeset all music. It might even rival SCORE (the mysterious notation
package that only ‘bigger’ music publishing firms can seem to get their
hands on).

Re: lilypond bombs on Mandrake 10 again

2004-10-18 Thread Trent J
Hi,
I had the same problems with Mandrake as well with some others but it seems
that the latest Mandrake version of Lilypond installs everything fine but
the problem is that it only makes lilypond only available to the root user.
You can double check this by going to the the lilypond directory under KDE
or GNOME and you'll see a padlock on this.

The way to get this working is to become superuser (su) and change the
permissions for the use of this folder.

Maybe this helps:
login as root on your computer and run the following commands:
cd /usr/lib/
ln -s libguile-srfi-srfi-13-14-v-1.so.1.0.0 libguile-srfi-srfi-13-14-v-1.so
(the mail reader may introduce line breaks, but the full command
'ln -s lib...so.1.0.0 lib...so' should be on the same line).
This will add a soft link so that the file is known also under the
name libguile-srfi-srfi-13-14-v-1.so, which seems to be what lilypond
looks for.

Figured Bass Questions part II

2004-10-19 Thread Trent J
Good Afternoon All,
Thanks to those who have helped so far with my figured bass problems.
After reading many articles on the subject in the group... I came across the
intriguing idea of using ‘Lyrics’ to type set the figured bass. (And is
still at the moment nearly the only way to do so with finale2005)

Using Lyrics mode raises a couple of questions...
1.	How do I get the sharps/flats and naturals in... they’re not in the
standard Latin encoding?

2.	Using the extender lines ie the melisma mode \melismaOn \melismaOff I
should be able to get figured bass extender lines but the lyric extenders
are set too low. They should be set halfway on the number. Is there any
chance of changing the height of the extender line or would turning the
hyphen into a continuous line be better or even possible?

3.	Left or right aligned... I’m not to sure how lyric verses are aligned
whether they are aligned with each other or not or just with the note. Eg.
  If was to enter #3 in the first verse and enter 5 in the second verse
would it be under the 3? Or would left alignment be better 3# and the 5
underneath the 3... slashes on notes etc don’t bother me as sometimes the
figures don’t really make sense especially in French Figured Bass notation.
A slash on a note can indicate either a raised semitone or play a
naturalised 5th (so actually strike the note down a semitone – as a perfect
5th from Dsharp (Eflat) A sharp (B flat). For example in Couperin’s Les
Nations which I’m typesetting at the moment Couperin will indicate a
slashed 5 over a D sharp the harmonies from the other parts make it clear
that Couperin didn’t mean an a sharp raised semitone to B but rather down a
semitone to a natural.

4.	How can I ensure that the verse lines are close together and not
separated by a lot of white space?

Any help would be appreciated or any other solutions to the figured bass
problem that people might have. From the talk in the group a lot of people
have been setting baroque music but I have not seen any finished examples
showing how people solved their problems.

Thanks again.
Trent

Tempo Mark

2004-11-09 Thread J L
Hi,
A known fact is that Lilypond 2.2.5 hides the tempo mark. So is it possible
to place the \tempo inside the \markup thingy if I want the tempo mark
appearing beside the directions for later versions?

i.e.
normally in 2.2.5
some music
\tempo 4 = 72
a^\markup {\large\bold {A Direction} \note #"4" #0.65 { = 72 }}
.
is this possible so that I don't have multiple tempo directions
..some music...
a^\markup {\large\bold {A Direction} \tempo 4 = 72}
.

Try one of these, the first should work, the second may not
1. Install LilyPond 2.2.5 from an other mirror than mine, and after that
install LilyPond 2.4.2 from my mirror - because I don't have all the
necessary files for it
2. Select two mirrors at the same time, (using Ctrl), one of them should
be mine, the other one should be your favorite mirror. Then select
lilypond-2.4.2-1, I think the dependencies should be resolved.

Lilypond error when opening test.ly

Is there any historical reasons why LilyPond places a natural before a

It would be good if there was a way to prohibit this.
\set Staff.printKeyCancellation = ##f
does that.
Maybe I didn't give a good example. By setting key cancellation to none, ALL
key cancellations are not printed.

A major to E major in LilyPond would normally be F-natural + C-natural +
G-natural  +  F-sharp + C-sharp + G-sharp + D-sharp. While normally, only
F-sharp + C-sharp + G-sharp + D-sharp would be printed.

what about the other way around
E major to A major in LilyPond would normally be F-natural + C-natural +
G-natural + D-natural  + F-sharp + C-sharp + G-sharp. Normally, just F-sharp
+ C-sharp + G-sharp + D-natural would be printed.

Any ideas anyone?

Accidentals

2005-01-23 Thread J L
Hi,
Maybe LilyPond needs a rewrite of the accidental handling, so that the
current behaviour is made optional, and the usual way (from all the prints I
generally use, which are about the early 1900's) the default.

The current behaviour of making a note natural before adding a sharp or flat
in some cases, and also totally cancelling all the sharps or flats before
adding one more or less, is quite rare. In fact, it just seems
to possibly easier to code.

By the way, telling LilyPond to use \set Staff.printextranatural = ##f
only 'hides' the natural. This means that LilyPond still calculates and
allocates space for the natural, just not printing it.

Figured Bass Improvements

2005-02-06 Thread Trent J
Good Afternoon,
I started using lilypond a couple of months ago but soon had to abandon it
because of its weak figured bass support. I've been following the
developments for a while in hope that the support for figured bass would be
strengthened. At this stage I have seen no sign of this. Is it ever going to
be improved? The rest of the program is excellent especially for the support
of "ancient" notation, but with the lack of figured bass support it is
severely let down when using older notations.

Any comments / hints of further development appreciated.

Trent

Lilypond installation problem

I am trying to download Lilypond for windows at work (where I have DSL),

my c drive at home (where I only have a 56k modem) and install it. It says
installation is complete, but when I run the test, no output is produced.
(I was able to install it fine at work OK, though.) I have tried two
variants of this, neither of which works. In variant 1, I first did the
installation download at work, then installed from directory successfully &
ran the test successfully, then saved the resulting 250 mb cygwin directory
on cd. Then at home, copied the cygwin directory to my c drive and
installed. The program installation hung at 98% complete in the post
install phase. So I uninstall, then re-install- same thing. So I try
Variant 2: Next day at work, I uninstall everything and delete the cygwin
directory. Then make a new cywgin directory and download the installation
files to directory cygwin. Then stop, put that 66mb cygwin directory on cd
and bring it home and install it after uninstalling the previous version and
deleting the previous cygwin directory. Then with the 66mb installation
files copied from the cd, I run install. Now, I get a complete
installation, but when I run the test.ly, it only flashes a black screen and
produces no output.

Do I have to download the files directly onto my computer at home using my
56k modem to get it to install correctly at home?

Thanks,

How should I fix this? Is it an actual problem? I'm not sure I need Latex
since I have a pdf file.

I'm also having two other problens I can't solve:

1) Each starting line of my two part fiddle piece is being indented. What
causes this?

2) The transcription will appear in a magazine article, but probable won't
take up the entire page. I want my transcription credit to appear with the
Lilypond credit right below the music, rather than at the bottom of the
page, for example:

Transcribed by Yours Truly
Engraved by Lilypond (version 2.4.2)

In trying to fix this, and based on a previous recent posting to the
usergroup, I added the line:
copyright = \markup { "Copyright \\copyright \ 1999"  to my paper setup
(planning to modify it to be my transcription credit) as follows:

\version "2.4.2"
\paper
{
#(set-paper-size "letter")
  topmargin = .5\in
  bottommargin = .75\in
  leftmargin = .625\in
  linewidth = 7.375\in
  copyright = \markup { "Copyright \\copyright \ 1999" }
  }

Adding this does not cause any errors or produce any output concerning a
copyright 1999.

Are the indent and copyright print problems related to the error invoking
latex issue above, or is it something else? How can the credit be placed
right after the music, rather than at the bottom of the page?

Sincerely,

Jim Grady

Markup font in LilyBook

2005-02-28 Thread J L
Hi,
How can I get markup text in my Lily snippets in Lilypond Book?
Dvips complains about the missing ecrm1000? font and says that it's leaving
those symbols blank. In the resulting file, there is no text under the stave
where I want it. I am running Lily2.4.2 on Cygwin.

So, what is another font hovering around that I could use, and how?

AFAIK, it is possible to uninstall the whole of cygwin by deleting the
whole
tree. I am not aware of any significant registry settings to uninstall (see
note below).

Of course, if you wish to uninstall only a few of the packages, you should
use
setup.exe as indicated by Mats.

If you just want some disk space back, you might wish to delete the stored
packages. In my install I keep them in c:\cygwin\packages\..., but you
might
have them in c:\packages. I believe it is safe to delete the subdirectories
of
this directory (there are a couple of files in there which I am not so sure
about).

Ruth
Note: I did find a few entries in my own registry:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cygnus Solutions (with a copy in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cygnus Solutions)
-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\
Start Menu2\Programs\Cygwin.
None of these will cause any problems if you leave them there with no
cygwin
installed.

I might just make a note here that just deleting the cygwin folder is not a
good idea as there are some files that just won't allow themselves to be
deleted manually. These are mainly files that windows thinks are invalid
shortcuts.

Clef Change

2005-05-28 Thread J L

Hi,

How can you have a clef change where the new clef is written just in-front
of the bar line?

The following example illustrate the closest LilyPond seems to come to this.
Without the spacer rest,
Lilypond just prints the new clef before the bar line. However, there is
always a gap that would be suitable for a semibreve between the bar line and
the clef. The line widh is 40 mm.

{
\time 3/1
#(set-accidental-style 'forget)
\override Staff.Clef #'full-size-change = ##t
\clef alto  c'1
\bar "|"
s1
\bar ""
\clef bass c'1
\bar "||"
}

Native Windows Build 2.5.25

2005-05-31 Thread J L

Dear Jan,

Finally, there is a native port for Windows!

on my computer, the only font that it chosses for text is Verdana.
Other ones are available, but only Verdana is used
And yet, the docs (PDF user manual) shows other fonts (while there is no
apparent special commands specified)
I though I read that the fonts for Lily 2.5.x were Century Schoolbook or
Book Antiqua?

is there an option to turn PDF point and click off? I makes the file size
larger and I mostly don't need it

there's an empty file called midi.so in %install
directory%\usr\lib\lilypond\2.5.25\python

is there a syntax change that now requires all contexts or staves to be
explicitly declared?

in 2.4.x you could do and get midi and all
{ c'4 d'4 e'4 }
or
<<
\context Voice = something { c'4 d'4 e'4 }
\context Lyrics = something { s1 }
>>
\context Lyrics = something \lyricsto something { foo bar foo }

now you have to do to get sound or right staves
\new Staff { c'4 d'4 e'4 }
or
\context Staff = "something" <<
\context Voice = somethingA { c'4 d'4 e'4 }
\context Lyrics = somethingA { s1 }
>>

foreign fonts or non standard english characters causes ghostscript to fail.
- I don't have some fonts but some should work?

could there be some window that appears when processing starts, and
disappears when processing finishes?
	currently, I am left guessing and looking at the folder to see if LilyPond
is doing anything

maybe a DOS restriction, but filenames are clipped to 8 characters. Why
can't original filename be used?

Welcome to LilyPond file -
number 1, grammer: Safe instead of Save

Python -
	I think that the Python scripts could be made to run, using a little bit of
path work, and
	adding an option to the installer (?) so that if a user has Python, those
scripts could be
	run. Adding Python to this distribution I think is not a good idea as there
are quite a few
	modules, and many are interlinked. This would lead to a larger download
size...

\minor keys no longer supported?
LilyPond gives an error when it encounters something like
\key b \minor
but still allows
\key d \major

	the things that seem to define this (scale-definitions-init.ly) still seems
to have minor defined

LilyPond tagline: spacing between the work "LilyPond" and the LilyPond
version is a bit close

an attempt to fix that... in "titling_init.ly"

tagline = \markup {
\with-url

 %% todo: lilypond.org/music-engraving
#"http://lilypond.org/web/";
\line {
"Music engraving by LilyPond ("
#(ly:export (lilypond-version))
") -"
 "www.lilypond.org"
}
}

LilyPad, Made using some things similar to Windows Notepad.
Notepad cannot handle line breaks correctly. It only recognises Windows
style (CrLf, 13+10). same here with LilyPad

gs.bat
It mentions a directory called: "C:\Program
Files\LilyPond\user\share\gs\fonts\" which doesn't exist

\transpose not work working inside define-music-function

2015-12-27 Thread J Smith
I'm trying to define a music function that transposes a chord and a
melody multiple times. But for some reason, the transposition is done
only once.

Here's my attempt:

repeatpattern =
#(define-music-function (parser location chord pattern) (ly:music?
ly:music?)
  #{
  % <<
  \new ChordNames {
\transpose c d { #chord }
\transpose c e { #chord }
  }
  \new Staff {
\transpose c d { #pattern }
\transpose c e { #pattern }
  }
  % >>
  #})

\score {
  \repeatpattern { c1 } { c'4 d' e' r }
}

(delete the %'s preceding << and >>; had to add them to pass Gmane's
filter).

Any ideas for why this is not working and how to fix it? (i.e., it
should transpose "c d e" into "d e f#" and "e f# g#", not into "f# g#
a#").

Dear Lilypond Users,

On Windows will Lilypond/Frescobaldi work without .py files being associated

C:\Documents and Settings\joe>assoc .py

.py=Python

C:\Documents and Settings\joe>ftype Python

Python="C:\Program Files\LilyPond\usr\bin\python.exe" "%1" "%2" "%3" "%4"

C:\Documents and Settings\joe>ftype | findstr -i python

Python="C:\Program Files\LilyPond\usr\bin\python.exe" "%1" "%2" "%3" "%4"
"%5" "%6" "%7" "%8" "%9"

Python.CompiledFile="C:\Python27\python.exe" "%1" %*

Python.File="C:\Python27\python.exe" "%1" %*

py_auto_file="C:\Program Files\LilyPond\usr\bin\python.exe" "%1" "%2" "%3"

If I change these to point to my previously installed

Thanks for the help in advance.

Dear Knute,

Thanks BIG TIME for the response.

I am assuming that your LilyPond/Frescobaldi installation(s) work well with
the association you mentioned.

Am I correct?

Slur as TupletBracket

2011-10-21 Thread J Ruiz
From:  Jethro Van Thuyne
Subject:  Slur as TupletBracket
Date:  Tue, 9 Feb 2010 18:55:33 + (UTC)
User-agent:  Alpine 2.00 (DEB 1167 2008-08-23)

I'm trying to replace the tuplet bracket with a slur by doing:  \layout {
\context {  \Score   \override TupletBracket #'stencil =
#ly:slur::print} }Unfortunately, I get a fucked up slur, starting and
ending vertically on the first note of the triplet (version 2.12.3):
http://hemiola.eu/tuplet_slur.png Is it broken or am I doing it wrong?Best
regards,Jethro.___
I use v2.14.2
Lilypond goes ignorant with tuplet brackets in style of a slur.
Switching to slur::print will require you add three control points for the slur
to manually define the curve:
\override TupletBracket #'control-points = #'( ( 4.5284 . 4.166) ( 6.521 .
4.89) ( 8.9664 . 4.619) ( 10.415 . 2.717) )
Another side-effect of this option is collision avoidance is disabled, and
you'll likely need to also tweak the the TupletNumber offset with command like:
\override TupletNumber #'extra-offset = #'(2.2 . -1.4 )___

Systematically Shortening Slurs

2011-10-22 Thread J Ruiz
I need to show a scale of notes, where every note has a slur to the next one.
Lilypond typesets the slurs with length to each notehead center, so my chain of
slurs have ends that meet, not visually pleasing.
In this case, I'd like the slurs to be somewhat shortened, such that slur ends
are some distance before the note head centers, but are still centralized
between each note pair.
I can't seem to find a way to systematically override slur end-point location
relative to note head destinations.

I found this property, but couldn't find documentation on usage or syntax on

Force Key Signature

2011-10-24 Thread J Ruiz
I need to display again the current Clef and Key Signature.
I found this command to force Lilypond to show the current Clef:
\set Staff.forceClef = ##t

Is there a command to also force to print the current key signature after the
clef?

Thx, Javier___

Not that I know of, but you can type in the current key signature at any point
& it'll reprint.

ties and polyphony

2011-10-26 Thread J. Boor
In this file:

http://www.jboor.net/music/polyreel/poly.ly

a second voice begins in the second measure.

I would like there to be a tie between the last E in the first measure and
the first e4 in the second measure. The only way that I have
been able to do this is by beginning the polyphony earlier
and using a skip at the beginning of the second voice.

Is there a better way to do this? The piece doesn't really
have two voices through out, so I don't want to litter my
score with rests.

Thanks.

Jeremy
