Lilypondfile: does not seem to work
Hi everybody
I'm kind of lost. I'm writing a document with latex and then tried at
some point to integrate a lilypond file with:
\lilypondfile {/path/to/file/filename.ly}
It didn't work. There always came the following error:
! Undefined control sequence.
l.18 \lilypondfile
{/path/to/file/filename.ly}
?
Maybe I had to load a package in latex? But I wouldn't no which one.
At all there isn't a lilypond file in the output.

You need to process your .lytex file with lilypond-book first.

Please keep the discussion on the mailist.
lilypond-book works quite well for such things; I'm using it for
my thesis. Please search the mailist archives from about one or
two months ago; we discussed this recently, and I posted a working
example with a makefile.

James, AFAIK there is no such file. Maybe there should be one for regression- testing purposes? Perhaps the best way to go is to start with your own files and fix all the colouring options. However, I don't know how familiar you are with the emacs variety of lisp, elisp, but as you know lilypond ships with a complete emacs mode. You could try to read that in order to re-create it for nano. Basically the file lilypond-font-lock.el defines the different levels of colouring. Looking at it, the colouring is split into several regexp's that evaluate to a face. And a face is basically a colour and some other markup on a font. So you could create an index per font-lock-*-face and check what it does. This could give you a head start on what types of syntax get which colours. Oh, and it uses a generated file for the keywords called lilypond- words.el. Perhaps you could build on that? HTH, Arjan On 9 mei 2008, at 08:54, James E. Hi, I have q auestion concerning the invoke-editor. If I run lilypond-invoke-editor I get ERROR: In procedure primitive-load-path: ERROR: Unable to find file "ice-9/boot-9.scm" in load path What does it mean? I'm trying to get XPDF working for point and click. I added urlCommand"lilypond-invoke-editor %s" in the xpdfrc-file. Is there soething, that I can do now? The fundamental thing to remember is this:
To use \lilypond or \begin{lilypond}, you need to write
a .lytex file. This *CANNOT* be done inside a .latex or .tex
file.
Use lilypond-book to translate from .lytex to .tex.
The makefile is just an automated way to do this. If you prefer,
you could use a shell script, or even do it manually by hand.

GDP status, May 2008
As you probably know, we're nearing the end of the Grand Documentation Project of LilyPond. It ends in Aug, so there's only three and a half months left. For more general background about GDP, see: http://web.uvic.ca/~gperciva/ Unfortunately, after eight and a half months, we only have 2 sections of the NR finished. 4 sections are nearing completion, and 2 more are being worked on. At the current rate of progress, we probably won't even finish NR 1. We could really use more people getting involved. The following sections are open: * Rhythms * Vocal Unfretted strings Fretted strings Percussion Wind Chords Ancient The first two starred sections are much longer than the others; I would like to reserve those sections for people who have already finished a smaller section. That said, some of the later sections are very small -- say, 5 hours of doc work -- so they could be finished quite quickly and then you could move on to one of the two longer sections. If you don't want to take on an entire section but are still willing to help, let me know. I guarantee that I can find something useful for you to do. If you're concerned about your lack of lilypond knowledge, don't be. Every single doc helper has been forced to learn material while working on the docs. The question is not "am I better than anybody else to work on Percussion?", the question is "am I better than *nobody*?". If you have a personal interest in percussion, and are willing to spend some time learning how to do it and then documenting how you did it, then you're the best person. It all comes down to your time and knowledge. If you have little technical or lilypond knowledge, it will take more time. If you have lots of technical and lilypond knowledge, it will take less time. (although in that case I'll ask you to do more tasks, since we have far too many tasks to deal with) Finally, remember that documentation is much more useful than answering questions on this list. Nobody wants to say it, but since I'm leaving anyway I'll play the bad guy. Answering questions on -user helps one person. Working on the docs, although it takes more time, helps everybody in the future who reads the docs. Nobody reads the mailist archives[1]. It's the classic short-term vs. long-term dilemma, and I come down heavily on the idea of long-term help. [1] At least, nobody who *should* read them; some developers read them often. This is documentation from version 1.6, which is probably about 8 years old. John, Valentin: could you add a robots.txt to the website so that google doesn't look at docs before 2.10 ? It might be useful to have these ancient docs available for archive, but we don't want google indexing them. I turned alaptop I have into Linux ( Fedora). I am a neophyte at this. I downloaded lilypon and the automatic reader cannot deal with it.* *iI presume there must be a set of commands or script which will install lilypon? it is a .sh file. Nothing personal, Hugo, but I don't want this discussion to get derailed. The problem is that we don't have enough people working on the basic documentation -- how to change staffs in piano music, how to change beaming, how to write an F-double-sharp -- such that we can finish the basic stuff within a year (3.5 months remaining). Extra documentation projects ideas are not particularly interesting to me. I know that this basic stuff is not at all interesting, trendy, or sexy, but it needs to be done. In this specific case, I've been planning to rework the lilypond-book docs once NR 1 is under control. This still hasn't happened, and perhaps won't happen before Aug. If you want to volunteer to take over that section of the docs, we could work something out. Alternately, you could add your template to LSR. That can be done by yourself with no effort from the doc team, and when somebody works on the lilypond-book docs, they'll hopefully notice it. There is a Lilypond 2.10.33 RPM package available from Fedora, which can be downloaded and installed with "yum install lilypond". The installer from the lilypond website should also work, using the instructions in the other response. Problem with followVoice line
In the attached extract, I want a 'followVoice' line connecting beats 3
and 4, and no others. Depending on where I place "\set followVoice =
##t" I get either additional unwanted lines between other beats (bars 2
and 3), or no line at all (bar 4). What's going on? Is this intended
behaviour?

I get error messages from the console when running the minimum file

I also got errors with your exact code... but when I moved the
"header" into the LaTeX code instead, it came out fine.
[Don't ask me why...]
Included, below, is the code I compiled in TeXShop to successfully
generate the output.

Dear Graham, if someone is needed: I could write about the notation of percussion or vocal music. But I have one problem: I can only write in BSE (bad simple english). I could write it in geman, and someone else, meybee, could translateit. Or I can try writing in english (maybee a good exercise for me), but I need persons helping me with making corrections. And one last question: In which format do I have to write?
