I'm not certain about this, but the "accidental" text is more
general and covers us more, so I took it.  :)

I want to emphasize that transposition affects more than one
pitch.  I'm not totally against changing the section name this

Absolute.  I can't see it making a huge difference, but I added

If you look at the Snippets -> Pitches page, you'll see all these
things collected together, along with the file names.  Could you
collect all these language corrections in the snippets, along with
the filenames, to Valentin?

GDP: NR 1.1 Pitches 2008-02-03

Ok, a number of smal fixes have been made in the past week.  I'm
restarting the "week until declaring perfect" counter.

If you've read it in detail recently, it's probably not worth
reading again.  But if you haven't looked at it yet, please do so!


The one big change: since nobody has touched the texi2html stuff
on the technical TODO list  (estimated: 3 hours for a perl
programmer), it appears that we're not going to get longer HTML
pages.  You may recall that the original plan was to have all of
1.1.1 Writing pitches  on a single page.

I therefore switched the numbering to give each subsubsection its
own number.  I'm not fond of four-deep numbers: 1.1.3.5  but IMO
it's better to have a unique number for each HTML page.  Comments
and discussion are welcome.

I saw your later note about using book, but it can be done
in straightforward Lily, although maybe 'straightforward' is
not the right word!  Using book is probably easier.  The
problem you had is the quite tricky positioning of the
sequential and simultaneous sections.  I'll explain here how
to work this out, as it might be a useful example for the
docs.

Let's start with the score block containing a ChoirStaff.
Normally you would need angle brackets after Choirstaff to
bring in all the staves in parallel, but here we want to
defer the parallelism so we use braces, although angle
brackets here wouldn't hurt.  Inside Choirstaff we want
first the staff which will contain the verse.  This must
contain notes and lyrics in parallel, so here we need angle
brackets around the \new Voice and \new Lyrics to start them
at the same time:

I don't know a regular way of doing this, but here's
a hack which might get you going.  It's a way of
fooling LilyPond into thinking the standard staff has
continued after the break.  Pinch, say, a tenth of the
first note value after the break and introduce a spacer
note of that tenth, leaving the first note of the ossia
and the first note of the standard staff to be 9/10s.
That keeps the bar timing right, and has little effect
on the note spacing or MIDI.

As has been said many times on the mailing list, there's no need to use 
\book here. If you just remove the "\book {" and matching "}", you will 
get exactly the same result. If there's any information left in the 
current manual that indicates that you need to explicitly specify the 
\book command, please tell us, so we can clarify this issue

even further.

Hello Stefan,

I downloaded it by changing the URL from the jEdit download page.

Example, the Debian package is

so, I just changed the version number in the file name in the browser 
address bar.

I can't remember what the performance of pre11 was like, but I currently 
use pre9.  Not every lilypondtool options works, but enough for me.

You download lilypondtool from within jedit: menu Plugins>Plugin 
Manager>Install.

Help with systemSeparatorMarkup in Latex

I don't seem to get the "//" systemSeparator when using latex and lilypond.

I've been searching and can't find any pointers.

I put this code in a lilypond file, and when compiled by itself it shows
fine in the final pdf, but if I use it in latex I don't get the separator.

parenthesized dynamics, that behave like dynamics

In the documentation there is a tip how to create parenthesized dynamics:

This seems to work fine, except for one very important issue: \dynamicUp or 
\dynamicDown does not work on them! See e.g. the attached sample file.

For vocal voices, the dynamics are typically written above the staff, while 
for instrumental voices, they are below the staff. Now, I have a piece with 
some colla parte instruments (e.g. Violin 1 plays exactly the same as 
Soprano), so I have the V1 / S music only once and use the same variable in 
both the violin score and the vocal score, adjusting the dynamics by 
\dynamicUp or \dynamicDown. For this reason, I really need parenthesized 
dynamics, that behave like dynamics and not like markup!

Paul,

- run the example through convert-ly.  It will probably warn you
  about the text spanners.
- look at NEWS.  It tells you that setting text spanners has
  changed.
- look at the doc section about text spanners.  It tells you the
  new syntax.
- with this knowledge, modify the snippet accordingly.

If you want to run a devel version, you need to be familiar with
these steps.

\RemoveEmptyStaffContext deleting half a GrandStaff

I'm typesetting some organ scores which will be open content upon
completion.  As with most organ scores, there is a GrandStaff, for the
hands, and a staff for the feet.  The desired engraving technique is to
remove the staff for the feet when it carries no notes.  It is important
to use a GrandStaff, not a PianoStaff, because cross staff beaming is
not in use and I want automatic adjustment of staff spacing.

Part of the GrandStaff being removed when only one of its staves carries
notes in a system.  This is undesired.

Any advice?

The LSR code didn't have a version that I could see.  I tried
starting with several 2.11.x versions.  s.11.11 finally gave:

You're trying to use a special tweak from an old version in an UNSTABLE
version of lilypond.  Unfortunately you need to get more familiar with
these steps if you want to convert special tweaks.

The same way you normaly get a flat, sharp, or a natural to appear
in markup.

#2 and #3.  This problem arose -- I think; I haven't actually
looked at the problem -- because the syntax for text spanners
changed between 2.10 and 2.11.  I gave you the general steps on
how to solve the problem.

If you want to do fancy stuff in lilypond, you need to learn about
how it works.  LM 3-4 in the 2.11.38 docs gives a great
introduction to this.

If you want to do translate fancy stuff from one version of
lilypond into fancy stuff in another version of lilypond, you need
to learn even more about how lilypond works.  See the News page
for more info about this.
