I'm afraid it's at home and I'm at work at the moment; I'll try to
remember posting it, but please remind me if I seem to have forgotten,
OK?

I don't have 2.3 installed, but as far as I remember you'll get a
problem with using spaces where there's no music: lines of music with
no separate lyrics on them will still have space allocated for those
lyrics.[1] "\skip"s will work, but I'm not sure how practical they are
when using \lyricsto.

In the (not unusual) case of rather few "exeptional lyrics"[2], I've
had luck doing things without \lyricsto, marking the rythm in the
lyrics like this (2.2-style):

   tiwords = \lyrics {
   \skip4*5 It's4 real -- ly fine!1
   }

Quite frankly, if the exeptional lyrics are too many for this to be
practical, the music probably belongs on one staff per voice with
all the lyrics for a voice underneath its staff. (The music must be
rather simple and the exeptions few for 4-voice vocal music to be
readable from 2 staves, in my humble opinion as a tenor (and tenors
have it easy!))

I have some examples, some better than others, on
, unfortunately without
source at the moment, but I'll try and remember to put the source out
there too.  Anyway,
shows the spacing problem I mentioned (that is, how the vertical
spacing goes wrong when using spaces instead of skips, but it's
typeset with an old version, too, so that may be a contributing
factor).   shows the same
problem solved with \skip.

[1] I could be wrong, but this has been a problem in the past for me
with versions from at least 1.6 to 2.2.
[2] OK, so I invented that term right now. You'll probably know what
I mean.

I was able to open the lily.pdf file and saw there music, lo and behold. It
is getting there. Now, what about lily.aux and lily.midi? How do I get that
output?  What is still missing?
For the MIDI file, follow the advice of a previous answer and start
reading the documentation to find out how to produce MIDI output.
What makes you think that you would get a .aux file and why are you
interested in it? (Honestly, .aux files are just temporary files from
processing LaTeX documents. The one produced when processing a LilyPond
score is removed directly since it's of no use afterwards.)

Yes I did.
I tried almost everything. Maybe someone want to try to solve it.
The only thing I want, is that I have two staves while each stave has
its own lyric line.

It shoudn't be that difficult, but one way or another, I don't seem to

I have this sheet of music with the following set-up:
Music (in two staffs), Lyrics and Chrods.
In pure essence I get it right on the paper, however the chords are
below the music (violin staff, above the bass staff) just above the
lyrics.

What I'd like most however is to have the chords above the violin staff
and the lyrics between the two music staffs... what could it be I'm
doing wrong?
I'm not really at home atm, and have very limited time... if it would
make the case much easier I can provide examples of course...

Maurits Lamers wrote:

That warning is usually harmless, just indicating that the voice does
not have contain any music at the beginning of the piece. However, the
problem in your file was something else (I will send it also to
bug-lilypond, since it's clearly an undocumented feature).
The following small example illustrates the problem:
\score{
  \new ChoirStaff {
\context Voice =a \notes \relative c' {c d e f}
\lyricsto a \context Lyrics \lyrics{Ly -- rics comes here }
}
}
If you try it, you'll notice that the lyrics isn't printed and
you don't even get a warning. However, if you change it to
\score{
  \new ChoirStaff <<
\context Voice =a \notes \relative c' {c d e f}
\lyricsto a \context Lyrics \lyrics{Ly -- rics comes here }
>>
}
Everything works as expected. What's the difference? Well, in the first
example you say that you should have a line of music followed by some
lyrics (since you use {...} instead of <<...>>) but at the same time
you say that the lyrics should go together with the music. Apparently,
this confuses LilyPond (I'm getting more and more convinced that this
is a plain bug). In the second example, the use of <<...>> tells
LilyPond that the music and lyrics should be simultaneous, which makes
more sense to LilyPond. So, your example works if you either move the
lyrics into the <<...>> of your \new ChoirStaff{\notes<<...>>}
(which can be simplified into \new ChoirStaff\notes<<...>> ) or
add another <<...>> :
\score{
<<
  \newChoirStaff{...}
  \lyrics << ... >>
>>
}
By the way, I hope you have realized that the \lyrics and \notes
commands are just used to tell the lexicographic analyzer of the
LilyPond frontend that it should switch mode to correspond to the
widely different characteristics of the syntax for lyrics and
notes, respectively. Also, you can nest these arbitrarily, so
you can have a \notes{...} within a \lyrics{...} and vice versa.
All this is simplified in the development version.

The other thing is that the SATB.ly template does not work. When I run
it through lilypond it keeps saying that there is nothing for lilypond
to do.
Is this on Mac or PC? If it's on the Mac, it might possibly be a problem
that your browser saves the file using a character coding or line end
convention that confuses LilyPond. However, you have these files
included in your installation as well. On your PC, you could try to
start the cygwin command window and run
lilypond /usr/share/doc/lilypond-2.2.5/input/template/satb.ly
I'm certain that it will work excellently.
I don't know the directory structure of the Fink installation, but
the file should be available at some similar location, together with
the other documentation files.

2004-10-22 Thread Sarah Cordish
Helpful friends,

Look at the nice run I got last night. I have to run Lilypond in Root mode,
don't know why.

 Because of your suggestions, I did the Lilypond installation over again and
installed Guile and tetex. I will look-up the midi interface in the

I didn't know what an *.aux file is. Thanks. I am happy now that is is
running and the *.pdf file looks like music.

it keeps saying that it is unable to find a Voice.
That warning is usually harmless, just indicating that the voice does
not have contain any music at the beginning of the piece. However, the
problem in your file was something else (I will send it also to
bug-lilypond, since it's clearly an undocumented feature).
The following small example illustrates the problem:
\score{
  \new ChoirStaff {
\context Voice =a \notes \relative c' {c d e f}
\lyricsto a \context Lyrics \lyrics{Ly -- rics comes here }
}
}
If you try it, you'll notice that the lyrics isn't printed and
you don't even get a warning. However, if you change it to
\score{
  \new ChoirStaff <<
\context Voice =a \notes \relative c' {c d e f}
\lyricsto a \context Lyrics \lyrics{Ly -- rics comes here }
>>
}
Everything works as expected. What's the difference? Well, in the first

2004-10-22 Thread Roland Goretzki
Hi at all,

I'm using version 2.2.6
and want to shift the number of octavation (e.g. 8)
relatively to the dashed-line or vice versa.

The default looks like:

   * *
 * *
*   *
 * *_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
   * *  |
 * *|
*   *   |
 * *|
   * *  |

Now I want it to look like follows:

   * *  _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
 * *|
*   *   |
 * *|
   * *  |
 * *|
*   *   |
 * *|
   * *  |

Is this possible?
I've spent a lot of time for this, but can't figure out,
if or how it's possible.

Any hints?

Thanks in advance and Best Regards Roland

Why not
\score {

\context Lyrics = la { s1 }

I see that you have reverted to the idea of writing lyrics within
a \context Staff{...}, I didn't expect it to work, but obviously
it does for some strange reason.
I really recommend you to start using separate variables for the
different parts, I'm sure that you will have large troubles yourself
to understand the structure of your \score{...} if you come back to
it in a couple of months. Using variables, as in the satb.ly example,
you separate the music from the score structure, which makes it easier
to grasp and update.

Maybe a little bit more clear:
\new Staff {
			\key g \major
			\context Voice = melodietwee \relative c' {
 s4 | s 2.*15 | s2

 d4 | g g8 a g fis | e4 e e | a4 a8 b a g | fis4 d d | b'4 b8 c b a
|
g4 e d8 d | e4 a fis | g2 d4 | g g g | fis2 fis4 | g fis e | d2 a'4
|
b4 a8 a g g | d'4 d, d8 d | e4 a fis | b g c | a d b
 } % end context Voice
 		} % end context Staff
 \context Lyrics = stemeenlyrics { s1 }

As far as I can see it is definitely outside the staff context. :)
You are right when it comes to more than 2 pages of score.
I made a arrangement a few years ago that is multivoice and multipage.
I notated it in Finale at that moment. I think I'll do it with
lilypond just to look how it looks :)

greets :)

No, you have
score {
<<
  \new Staff {
<< \context Voice = hoofdmelodieeerst {...}
  \lyrics <<
\lyricsto "hoofdmelodieeerst" \new Lyrics {...}
...
  >>
>>
   }
  ...
Which kind of proves my next statement:
But I need the two staves seperately. Each voice has a staff for
itself.
I tried it only with the voice contexts and that didn't do it.
>
About the score structure: I think I can remember this more easy,
because the structure is visible.
If I have to dig my way through all seperate variables I think I will
really lose the structure.
Now it has a direct graphic relation with the printed score.
My point is that I find it much easier to get an overview of
\score{
<<
  \new Staff {\context Voice = hoofdmelodieeerst {\hoofdmelodieeerst}}
  \lyricsto "hoofdmelodieeerst" \new Lyrics{ \lyricsI}
  \lyricsto "hoofdmelodieeerst" \new Lyrics{ \lyricsII}
  \lyricsto "hoofdmelodieeerst" \new Lyrics{ \lyricsIII}
  ...
>>
}
than to have to scroll several pages to come from '\score{' to '}'.
However, if the variables themselves contain \context declarations and
there's a hierarchy of variables defined using other variables, then I
agree completely with what you're saying.

Multiple verses in Noteedit problem

2004-10-22 Thread Barry Roberts
I'm trying to learn enough lilypond to figure this one out myself, but
it's taking longer than I had hoped, so I'm begging for help.

In Noteedit 2.7.3 (from the ccrma rhfc2 i386 rpm) I can export as
lilypond without problem until I add a second verse lyric to a staff.
Then lilypond gets errors. It produces midi, ps, and pdf, but the
print versions don't have the lyric for the second verse.

I've attached 2 simple lilypond files exported from noteedit. With
one verse, lilypond is fine, but as soon as the second verse lyric is
added lilypond starts spitting out things like:

testverses2.ly:25:5: warning: Junking event: `LyricEvent':
An
  d Verse Two is me }

I'm running lilypond 2.2.6 also from the planet ccrma apt repository
rpm on FC2 on a dual Xeon Dell precision 650.

I've looked at some of the multi-verse .ly's on mutopia.org and they
do lyrics so differently from this that I would have a hard time
patching the current exporter to match that.

What I'm hoping is that someone with more experience with lilypond can
point out a small tweak that I can apply to noteedit to get it
working. If not, I'll keep learning lilypond and try to make noteedit
export lyrics more like the lilypond tutorial and the samples I've
seen.

Thanks,
Barry Roberts
