Hi David/Bo/Derek/GNUCash users,

FWIW, the current version of Fedora is 41, so 29 is quite, uh, old...
https://fedoramagazine.org/announcing-fedora-linux-41/ &
https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=fedora

I do not know if the issue with upgrading Fedora to the current version
is hardware related, but if it is, maybe those interested in upgrading
to Fedora 41 in order to upgrade to the current version of Mailman
(01-Oct-2024 Mailman 3.3.10 (Tom Sawyer) - https://www.list.org/) could
chip in a donation to https://gnucash.org/donate.phtml

It's absurd. Let's call it alternative facts: eMail is 50 years old
and Mailman is 25 years old, even Mailman 2.1.19 is from 2018.

I raised https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=797702 about
upgrading to Mailman 3 and received the following reply:

Of course Mailman 3 had run on Fedora 29 for years. My recollection of
Derek's signature at the time:

In addition to not emailing passwords back to users in clear text I
highlighted through the mailing list Mailman 3 has a forum-like
interface with search facilities.

I understand Derek manages the Mail server for the community and the
configuration isn't public.

Lastly, I acknowledge and thank Derek for the time and effort he
freely gives to me as a member of the community in support of Gnucash.

Re: [GNC] Searching mailing lists

2025-02-14 Thread Derek Atkins
Hi.

Issue is not hardware based -- indeed, code runs as a VM, and I've got
other VMs running F41. It's not a technical issue; it's mostly a matter
of time & effort. Yes, F29 is old. I know that. But upgrading is not an
easy or fast operation.

Code runs a bunch of services, and I'd have to migrate each and every one
of them. The last time I did this it took me a few weeks, and that was a
relatively minor update! Also, back then, I had more time (see below).

Just as a case in point, the IETF, which has a cadre of professionals who
are PAID to manage their services, took over a year to migrate their
mailing lists from mailman2 to mailman3. They had to back out of the
update multiple times. They had to write special scripts to perform the
migration. And I believe they STILL run a custom front-end UI. I don't
know if ANY of that code/effort was donated back to the MM3 team.

I'm just one guy, with a full time $DayJob. I manage the GnuCash server
in my spare time, which has grown smaller and smaller as my kids have aged
up into the range where they are doing sports nearly every weekend. While
I have time to maintain the status quo, I don't have time for a major
project like a MM2 -> MM3 migration.

I tend to only upgrade the distro every couple years. "If it aint
broke" So THAT is why code is still running such an old distro. It
was built in 2017 with F25. It took a week to build and test the system
before I migrated the data from the previous system. Another few weeks to
stabilize the system.. I then upgraded to F29 in 2019. After that, well,
Covid and Real Life hit. I haven't looked back because "it works", and
then because MM2 was "removed" in F35. This means I could only update up
to F34 -- but what's the point now?

I hope this explains the current status.

Thanks,

-derek

That is not the reality. It is an old platform with issues without a
reasonable migration path. This is exactly why many old forums are archived
when they are ultimately upgraded.

Is updating https://lists.gnucash.org/search/?idxinfo=gnucash-user
achievable in
the interim?

Contrary to Liz's experience with duckduckgo I don't have success with

Create/edit a text file in your AppData/Roaming folder (if you are on
Windows) named gtk-3.0.css

Put this code in this file and save it:

*{
  font: 10pt Calibri, sans-serif;

Change font and size as needed to meet what you need.

Hi Gerry/GNUCash users,

Some basics:

What operating system are you using?

What version of GNUCash are you
using?https://www.gnucash.org/download.phtml - 5.10 is the current
release
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/GTK3#Typefaces - this is not a great
description of how to setting a default font and size for GnuCash, but
it is what is on the GNUCash Wiki...

Re: [GNC] Exchange Rate to Price Database issue with low transactions amounts

2025-02-14 Thread Bo Buckley
Thanks so much for digging into this John.

Yes, I can confirm that after updating using flatpak to 5.10 I also no
longer see this issue. I'm not familiar with the code base whatsoever, but
I'm also surprised that commit is related to this issue.

If the "fix" can't be explained, it may be worth adding some sort of
check/warning system for this. Two rough ideas come to mind:

1. Make an independent memory copy of the value of the user entered
Exchange Rate when a user presses ok in the Transfer Funds dialog and check
this against the value to be written to the Price Database. As you
explained, this isn't expected to be an exact match, but something as
simple as a console warning/error when the value is off by > X% would at
least make it visible if it ever appeared again. The idea being that so
long as the copy of the Exchange Rate is independent, and not used
elsewhere other than this test, any shared memory errors that may be
unintentionally introduced by compilation/etc can be identified at runtime.
2. Some unit test that mimics the test I created to exemplify this issue.
Is there any way to recreate this behavior programmatically rather than gui
clicks?

Otherwise this may reappear accidentally sometime in the future and since
it is a silent error, I'd be worried about this indefinitely.

Thanks again!

Re: [GNC] version 5.10 - how to adjust fonts/ font size?

2025-02-14 Thread David H
Not too difficult having just set my default font to "font: 20px arial;" to
cater for my aging eyes :-) Start with the right hand column header
(Balance in my case) and double click it to automatically set the column
width. Don't worry if it goes off the edge of the screen for now. Do the
same for all of the column headers working from right to left i.e. from
Balance to Date columns in turn but skipping over the Description column.
The Description column is a special case and always expands to use the
remaining space. Sometimes this process results in one or more of the
columns on the right being pushed off the screen so what I do to reset the
width of the Description column is to left mouse "click and hold" the
column divider on the right side of the Description column and flick it 2-3
cms to the left and let go of the mouse button although I assume just
dragging left and releasing the mouse button would probably also do the
trick. This usually reduces the width of the Description column to fit and
brings any columns that have been pushed too far to the right back into
view. Unfortunately you may have to do this for each register but it is
what it is :-)

Hope this helps, Cheers David H.

Re: [GNC] version 5.10 - how to adjust fonts/ font size?

2025-02-14 Thread sunfish62--- via gnucash-user
For the record, you can also double click the Description column and get it to
adjust.

Simplifies the process.

As for the "repeat for every register" comment, it is possible to edit the
settings file (*.gcm somewhere, I believe) that controls column widths for all
accounts and find/replace all to use a specific setting. It's not ideal, but it
does get some measure of sanity to register displays. (Usual warnings about
editing settings files outside the app apply, although a borked gcm can simply
be deleted and GnuCash will regenerate it.)

There may also be a setting for the default register geometry, but that's above
my pay grade.

Re: [GNC] Trading Accounts Balance

2025-02-14 Thread Bo Buckley
Dear John,

Thank you for your reply.

I don’t understand what you mean by “zero this out for today”.

Maybe I misunderstood what you meant when you said,

If the net gains aren’t taxable then you can book them to a separate
> non-taxable income account.

Say I'm doing my US reporting, and this transfer from USD to JPY wouldn't
be taxable (as far as I know, only the opposite would be). Then to "book
them to a separate non-taxable income account" would involve what exactly?
Say I had an Income:NonTaxable account, what would the transaction look
like? I apparently can't offset a debit to Income:NonTaxable with either
Trading account, so not sure what this would look like.

Thanks again.

[GNC] Reporting Exchange Rates

2025-02-14 Thread Bo Buckley
In all examples I've seen so far with regards to the handling of foreign
currencies the user is physically moving money from one currency to another
(e.g. an online transfer) where an actual exchange occurs. What about the
case where users have to do reports for different countries in their own
respective currency (e.g. Japan in JPY and US in USD). I must report all
income in both Japan and the US (thanks IRS!) so I need a way to convert my
books between USD and JPY.

For example say I have an Expenses:Advertising account with account
currency USD and book currency USD. I can deduct these as business expenses
both on US and Japanese reports, but I must convert them all to JPY to do
so. Is there any way of doing this within GNUcash? Until now I've just been
creating an Income Statement in USD and copying this to a spreadsheet and
converting from there (not ideal).

I see in the Income Statement options, I can change the Report's currency
to JPY, but what is going on in the background here? Are all transactions
converted per date, or just a single rate used on the totals? Based on what
I can see at the bottom of the report, it appears to use the most recent
rate limited by the report ending date (e.g. 12/31/2024), which would not
be a standard way to report this. The two options I was told from a
Japanese accountant to use would be
1. (Yearly Average TTS + Yearly Average TTB) / 2 from a Japanese bank
(e.g. https://www.murc-kawasesouba.jp/fx/year_average.php)
2. (Preferred) Use exchange rates specific to each transaction.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
