Where did you get $1,000? The minimum is $600 in any one year, not
$1,000, but if the client is a residence not a business then they would
not file a 1099. All that's actually in the URL you posted in your
follow-up:

(And if you withheld Federal income tax you must file a form 1099,
regardless of amount you paid.)

However,
"You are not required to file information return(s) if any of the
"following situations apply:
"* You are not engaged in a trade or business.
"* You are engaged in a trade or business and
"**the payment was made to another business that is incorporated,
" but was not for medical or legal services or
"**the sum of all payments made to the person or unincorporated
" business is less than $600 in one tax year"

For instance, if someone does more than $600 of handyman work at my
residence, and I'm not operating a business out of my house, I don't
need to file a 1099. (That's how I read the above, after asking in the
misc.taxes.moderated newsgroup.)

It depends on whether you are operating a trade or business or not. If
you are not, you do not need to file a form 1099 regardless of how much
you paid the contractor. If you are, then you need to file a 1099 if the
_aggregate_ in one tax year is $600 or more (not $1,000).

John,

I would try importing the .qbx export file as an OFX file if you can
open it with a text editor. There is a good chance that it is just a
proprietary version of the OFX standard format since it is intended for
export of Quickbooks data to accountants who may or may not be using
Quickbooks and Quickbooks has given it a non-standard extension to
confuse everyone. You can find details of the OFX file format at
https://docs.fileformat.com/finance/ofx/
,
https://www.financialdataexchange.org/FDX/FDX/About/OFX-Work-Group.aspx?a315d1c24e44=2
to compare the .qbx file with to check whether it is in an OFX format.

Re: [GNC] 1099's

2024-11-16 Thread David Cousens
Heidi,

1099's are clearly juridictional specific to the US and not anything
specifically to do with GnuCash per se.

Following on from Rob Heller's comments on the 1099, the way you
recognize that income you have received is subject to a 1099 is that
you should receive a copy of the form from any client who pays you if
it is relevant.

You can then handle that by creating a sub account of your Income top-
level account and putting any income received subject to a 1099 you
receive into that sub account.

Wehn you create an invoice AFAIK it identifies the vendor in the Memo
field of the transaction as "Sale ". A transaction report
on the income subaccount should give you all the transactions subject
to a 1099. That report includes the Memo field for the transaction.
Extract the memo field into a spreadsheet, sort on vendor name (it
usually has Sale as a prefix), eliminate duplicates and you have the
list of vendors.

You could also tag any transaction subject to a 1099 in the Description
or memo fields at creation with a unique tag and do a search for
trnasactins with that tag.

I have done a bit of limited testing of the above but can't guarantee
it will work. It could also serve perhaps as the basis for creating a
custom report.

b. Borrowed Margin Loan:

  * Debit: Margin Deposit (Asset) $1,175.16

Subject: [GNC] properly record short-selling

Hello people,

For the first time since I started using gnucash 3+ years ago, I'm now
shorting on a stock. Nice how I refrained from excessive speculation
for 3+ years hah!

So, I started with
Assets:Banks:USD +$1,274.26
Assets:Investments:Stocks USD:TSLA 0

And what is clear from my bank statements is:
 * I sold 8 TSLA stocks for $326.71 each, tot 2,613.68, minus $3.94 fee,
   so I have a +$2,609.74 in A:Banks:USD
 * this is operating on a 45% margin, and shows a "margin amount" of
   $1,176.16
 * to cover the rest, apparently I borrowed 2,459.01 EUR according to
the statement, go figure what's that in USD
 * this being a bank, they are not just happily loaning me shares
without any insurance, so I have a -$3,789.83 on my statement. But
where is that number coming from? It looks suspiciously close to what
2,459.01 EUR + 1,176.16 USD would look like.
 * it *seems* those 8 shares I borrowed for the operation are valued
$473.7295 each, total $3,565.57 — I'm seriously confused about where
that figure is coming from, but it's listed in the stock transactions
list with the note "lending". (note: I get what short selling is all
about, I'm only confused about where that $473 figure comes from).

At the end of it all, the bank gives me a balance of +$94.17 and -8
shares.

How do you recommend I record all of the above in gnucash?

For long positions it's a fairly straightforward
Assets:Banks:USD +$1234
Liabilities:Loans:Margin Trading:USD -$1234

Assets:Banks:USD -$3456
Assets:Investments:Stocks USD:whatever +$3456
But clearly it's not _that_ straightforward for shorts.

Would people normally create a Liabilities accounts for the asset loan
(with the counter-account being the regular stock account under Assets)?
Or would you just let the A:I:Stocks account go negative while the
position is open?

And how do you even start recording the cash that has been loaned just
to cover the position?

If anybody is able to make heads and tails of this situation, I would
really appreciate it!

If you are experiencing hangs or crashes with GnuCash, could it be the USB
stick? I keep reading that many USB sticks nowadays are often quite
unreliable.

I suggest it might be more fail-safe to keep the data file on the
computer's hard drive (and maybe also use a cloud utility that does a live
sync). Operating systems keep track of how reliable your hard drive is, but
those tests are often suspended or ignored for USB sticks.

You might devise a procedure or use a program that can backup the data to
multiple USB sticks, sequentially (so you rotate through several sticks
over time), AND ideally verify that the data was written correctly so you
know when a USB stick has become unreliable. I don't recommend relying
solely on a cloud service for backups, though they are quite handy when you
need to quickly "restore" a file from a few hours or days ago.

I don't use Windows so I don't know if it includes a backup utility, but I
know there are quite a few available that folks find useful.

Re: [GNC] Closing out QB Pro?!

2024-11-16 Thread sunfish62--- via gnucash-user
This comes up with regularity on the lists as people look to abandon QuickBooks
and come to GnuCash.

There is an entry in the FAQ on the wiki
(https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_How_do_I_import_my_data_from_Quickbooks.28TM.29.3F)
that explains that QB uses a proprietary format that no one has put in time to
decipher, rendering it non trivial for a user to migrate. I'm reasonably sure
that this information is still accurate, with regards to GnuCash capabilities
in late 2024.

I will also note that while there is information online about Quicken's *other*
formats, there is nothing about how a QBX file is structured. This suggests
that OP will not find any help with converting into a GnuCash friendly format.

Further, previous discussions on this topic (Google search: "quickbooks
site:lists.gnucash.org") have revealed that QB doesn't offer its users the kind
of export that GnuCash advisors here suggest (QIF, QFX, and OFX are the usual
list recs).

The past threads that I scanned in the archives came to the same conclusion:
close out your QB books, change over to GnuCash as of a certain date, and start
fresh. Optional: continue using QB for a period of time, either in parallel, or
for reference.

All apps SHOULD have a way to export data and all apps should have a way
to import data. But you have no reason to expect app B can directly
import what app A exports.

However, it should not be HARD to do any necessary conversion if app B
does not provide a tool for that. And 'nix users should be able to do
the conversion shell language + library of standard 'nix utilities
(complete language of type "string")

You may be in luck since many come to gnucash from QuickBooks so tools
likely already exist.

Re: [GNC] Account Register not Populating

2024-11-16 Thread David Carlson
An update on my experience:
I am running Release 5.9 in Windows 10 with a data file on a USB key. For
some reason it is not stable and it hangs and/or crashes from time to
time. It did it again this morning. Since I wanted to go back to a backup
from yesterday in order to recover I decided that I needed to see whether I
could use the link in the About screen to recover a copy of the user
configuration as was discussed here yesterday. I thought I had shot myself
in the foot by using GnuCash to Save As the backup to the desired
filename. Luckily, the link took me to the directory that contained the
[almost] current .gcm file that had been in use before the crash so I was
able to recover it to use with the recovered data file.

That link makes it an almost trivial exercise to find and back up that
stuff from time to time. Thanks to the developers for that new feature!

That's odd. I have Windows 10 and GC 4.14, and Help » About gives me
"the location of those other user files", as shown in the attachment.
They're even clickable links, and I've just verified that they open the
 right folder.

Which GC version do you have that doesn't show them? Hopefully it's an
earlier version not a later one -- it would be a pity if that useful
 information were removed.

Robert,
The 1099 is cumulative, so if you have multiple invoices over the threshold
they do need the 1099 even if no single invoice is over.

And yes, bank send a 1099-Int if you have over $9.99 in interest.

A question: If a contractor did three different jobs during the year, and
ALL of the invoices were under $1,000 (but together they sum to over
$1000), would a 1099 still need to be issued?

Oh, and I think there is an error in the comments about 1099-INT - I think
banks send them for interest over $9.99, not $999.99.

You mean an automated way?

Let's first analyze the DATA you need to make the determination. You
need a list of vendors to whom you paid >filing threshold FOR THE
YEAR. In other words, this isn't going to be by transaction/invoice
because you could have paid a vendor several amounts, all below the
threshold, but which totaled more than the threshold.

So your first ask should be "can I (how do I) create a report showing
all vendors and the total paid each for a specified period". If not
possible, how about a report showing each payment to a vendor (vendor
and amount). We are here discussing how much done within gnucash vs
how much after exporting. You AT LEAST need to be able to do the
second of those.

Michael D Novack

PS: The organizations for which I kept books had a low volume so done
"by hand". With the complication (in the case of one org) that it
wasn't the whole amount paid the vendor but "what for" (we were paying
them "for work done" and also "mileage reimbursement" -- the former
"compensation" (to 1099) and the latter not).

Re: [GNC] Closing out QB Pro?!

2024-11-16 Thread R Losey
I believe that QB lets you export the data in some form, and GnuCash will
import that. Sorry to be so general, but I didn't import data; I just
started fresh with GnuCash. But I believe that the process is documented in
the GnuCash material.

If you have a lot of data in QB, you may want to do a year at a time, as I
recall from advice on this subject from previous posts.

Re: [GNC] Closing out QB Pro?!

2024-11-16 Thread Dan a1TNC
I have come over from QBooks as the price has gone up 400% in one year.
I have not found or seen anyway you could export then Import into GNUCash.
If there is I would sure like to know how.
I have taken a few accounts at a time and updated them as i go and compared
them to each other. And so far i plan to be on GNUCash only at the start of
the year.
If anyone wanted to figure out how to do that under the free "open source
model" there will be many more folks coming this way that will want to hire
someone to pull and push their files.
How I know they will be coming is, all the alternatives are just as pricy,
if not more. At some point they will be stopping support for desktop, as the
on-line will only have one window open at a time. Not to mention how glitchy
it is.

Build it and they will come :-)

Hey y'all,

Thank you for building GNUCash.

>From Quickbooks to GNUCash, what is the file transfer setup from one to the
other?
Is GNUCash stable in 2024+? I don't intend to step on any foots, I've been
with Linux since late 1994.

Is it better on hardware or a VM, does anyone build it on a docker container
with its own database?

Thank you everyone,

the file isto start with the Accounts tab.1. Are most of the displayed balances
nonzero? If so, data must be inthe file to get nonzero summary figures. On the
other hand, if most ofthe balances are zero, it might mean you have no data, or
it might meanyou "closed the books" and haven't entered any transactions after
that,or it might mean you have a filter in effect (see below)..2. Still from
the Accounts tab, press Ctrl+F to bring up the FindTransaction dialog. Enter
search criteria that would take in mostrecords -- Description contains e, for
example, or Value has credits ordebits greater than or equal to 0.01.Also, make
sure you haven't set a filter that excludes all data. In theregister for one of
your no-data accounts, click View?? Filter By andmake sure that Show All is
selected. If changing to Show All revealsdata, make the same change in your
other accounts. (N.B. When you changether flter to Show All, you probably want
to tick the "Save Filter" boxat the bottom of the dialog.)Stan BrownTehachapi,

Yes. It is a way for the IRS to track income > $999.99 that is not regular
wages (which are tracked with W2s). Eg as a contractor I would invoice a
client for jobs and if the invoices sum to $1,000.00 or more, the client would
file a 1099 with the IRS (basically stating that they paid me $x for contract
work) and send me a copy of the 1099. Also 1099's are used by banks when
paying intrest > $999.99, and also pension funds (1099r), Same for stocks and
bonds dividends/interest. A 1099 form is a form stating that money was paid as
reportable income to a taxpayer.

Thank you everyone,

Best,

"is it better on hardware?" LOL, it has been a LONG time since
anybody has been running programs "on hardware". Quite likely before you
were born. You are talking about something like an IBM 650 (you put the
instructions spaced out on the drum -- where you put them affected the
speed at which programs would run*)  That would be the 1950's. By the
mid 1960's the IBM 360 was out and running under MFT so multitasking <<
in other words, running under an operating system >>

I suspect you meant (by "hardware") just under the operating system, but
gee, already a couple levels up from hardware. When you turn on your
computer, it starts coming up in its BIOS (basic input output system)
because without that software running it couldn't even bring in the OS
you intend to use.

Michael D Novack

* If spaced right, while the previous instruction executed, the drum had
rotated, so fastest if the next instruction was about to be at the read
head. Maybe 1961 I an a high school friend made a tiny 4 bit machine ALL
SOLID STATE. We had to hand load a "program" into the core so I guess
you'd call that

hardware"

You mean an automated way?

Let's first analyze the DATA you need to make the determination. You
need a list of vendors to whom you paid >filing threshold FOR THE YEAR.
In other words, this isn't going to be by transaction/invoice because
you could have paid a vendor several amounts, all below the threshold,
but which totaled more than the threshold.

So your first ask should be "can I (how do I) create a report showing
all vendors and the total paid each for a specified period". If not
possible, how about a report showing each payment to a vendor (vendor
and amount). We are here discussing how much done within gnucash vs how
much after exporting. You AT LEAST need to be able to do the second of
those.

Michael D Novack

PS: The organizations for which I kept books had a low volume so done
"by hand". With the complication (in the case of one org) that it wasn't
the whole amount paid the vendor but "what for" (we were paying them
"for work done" and also "mileage reimbursement" -- the former
"compensation" (to 1099) and the latter not).

Re: [GNC] properly record short-selling

2024-11-16 Thread Christopher Lam
Not sure how to record your particular transaction with short-selling stock
and foreign currency both involved.
This sounds like a mess for you and for your accountant.
There's a Stock Transaction Assistant which is activated when you're
viewing your STOCK account and is intended to record stock activity eg
buy/sell/dividends etc and *does* also adapt to short positions, but it
will only record in your stock's parent account currency.
Good luck...
