Re: [GNC] How to keep responding on mailing list?

2024-09-15 Thread Geoff Jankowski via gnucash-user
G’day all.

I think the point of Heidi’s question is ´how do I see the mailing list?’

The answer is that you do not. It sits on a server in the web where it is
managed on our behalf by a few dedicated individuals.

If you are subscribed you will see all questions raised to the mailing list
address. If you write to it, everyone will see your message.

If the question is in your field of expertise, answer it, if not ignore (or
delete) it.

It is best not to delete the prior messages when you reply as it breaks the
history of the question. By all means delete advertising but please leave the
basic content intact.

Heidi, I hope this answers your question but if not, hit reply all and ask
again, someone will respond.

Not strictly true.

Everyone can "see the mailing list(s)" via the Archives.

From the web page detailing the variouas maling lists associated
with the GnuCash project

  https://lists.gnucash.org/mailman/listinfo/

the specific page for the "GnuCash User" list,

has a link to the Archives for that specific list

Re: [GNC] How to keep responding on mailing list?

2024-09-15 Thread David Cousens
Heidi,

It looks like you are subscribed to the mailing list.

One of the options when you sign up is to choose whether you receive
emails from the list in a single email, the  daily digest.  The other
option if you didn't choose to get the digest email is to receive all
emails by all users as individual eamils.  These are echoed to you (
and all other subscribers) by the mailing list software when anyone
submits a question or an answer to a question to the mailing list at
gnucash-user@gnucash.org.  All emails to the GnuCash User list should
be sent to this address.

If you are getting the digest it will contain all of the questions and
answers that have been submitted to the list on a given day.  If you
open the digest you will find a number of emails from different users
have been concatenated together into a single email to you.  Who has
originated each email in the digest  and the subject line from the
original email will be at the start of each entry in the digest.  If
you simply reply to the digest when your reply goes back it will have a
subject line which identifies the list and the date  so it contains no
information about which email in the digest you were actually
responding  to.

The protocol is to start a reply to the list using the "Reply All' or
"Reply to List" option and then to copy the subject line from the entry
in the digest you wish to respond to into the subject line of the email
reply you have just opened. When you do this your email will then be
grouped  together by that subject line, particularly on archives of the
mailing list
like https://www.mail-archive.com/gnucash-user@gnucash.org/.  This
might be a bit more difficult with the email clients on phones but
there is usually a way to do this with most email clients.

Re: [GNC] How to keep responding on mailing list?

2024-09-15 Thread Ken Farley
Since I haven't seen it suggested yet, I'll pipe in with how I
participate in this list.

I subscribed as everyone else suggested, but I don't want to be deluged
with e-mails, so I turn off the digest and the forwarding of all e-mails.

To see what's currently being discussed, I go to the list, in my
browser, via the following:

https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-user/

Which was previously suggested.

When I see a topic of interest, I click on it and it opens in the
browser window. If I want to reply, I click on the hyperlink of the
author of the post, which is the first line of the post being displayed.
It automatically starts up my e-mail program (for me, Thunderbird) with
"gnucash-user@gnucash-org" in the "To" field. Works every time, and I
don't end up directly e-mailing anyone by accident. I think, but I'm not
sure, that the pipermail site does all this for me so I don't have to
worry about the specifics.

Are you doing some sort of business function? (I'm not familiar with
those.) If so, could it be related to the fact that 8 Sept 2024 is a

Do you not find it on File » Properties » Business? If that's not what
you're looking for, where exactly is this "company name" that you want
to change?

(Edit » Preferences or File » Properties will almost always contain the
answers to questions of this sort. Until you get more acquainted with

there's no better way to become acquainted with them.)

How did you create these "practice companies"? Do you mean just
additional GnuCash books? If so, you can simply delete the *.gnucash and
*.log files for those companies.

Re: [GNC] Heidi EDIT company name Help

2024-09-15 Thread David Cousens

Heidi,

To edit the company name in your set of books choose File->Properties
from the menu and then the Business tab on the dialogue which opens up.
In this dialogue you can set options which are specific to the
[particular set of books if you are dealing with multiple accounting
entries.

You will find much of this information in the GnuCash tutorial and
Concepts guide (https://code.gnucash.org/docs/C/gnucash-guide/) and or
the reference
manual https://www.gnucash.org/viewdoc.phtml?rev=5&lang=C&doc=help
which has detailed explanations of each screen.

The Gnucash wiki https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/GnuCash also has a lot
of additional information but can be difficult to navigate. Searching
for a topic and adding wiki to the terms will often throw up some
relevant pages. The wiki may have information which hasn't yet filtered
into the guide or manual.

I take it by this you mean other sets of books? And delete from what?

The test books themselves can be deleted by deleting their files. But
that will not remove them from the history list of last four that were
open (think about that for a moment). I understand there is a way to
alter history. It's never been an issue for me since many sets of books
and so over time any abandoned books will drop off the last four open
list. Perhaps easier than learning how to alter history, you could
create tiny dummy books with names like "NotInUse1", NotInUse2", etc. to
force the names of the abandoned books off the last four list.

John,

I will probably release F::Q v1.63 after I review and merge

Perhaps add the ability to set FINANCEAPI_API_KEY much like
ALPHAVANTAGE_API_KEY? https://financeapi.net/ allows 100 daily queries
compared to AV's 25. FinanceAPI currency module will be coming as well
(but not in 1.63).

Thanks.

[GNC] Importing QFX with no transaction, only position/price updates?

2024-09-15 Thread Ross Reedstrom
Hey y'all -
I'm doing a round of quarterly (yes I'm late for Q2/early for Q3) updates,
and the QFX I have downloaded from my retirement account manager
(TIAA/CREF) contains no actual transactions, only position updates with
prices. This is correct, I've recently retired, so contributions have
stopped.

When I import the file in my standard book, nothing seems to happen.
Checking the terminal (I'm a Linux user and launch from there) I see some
INFO lines from LibOFX of the form "Created OfxDummyContainer to hold
unsupported aggregate FOOBAR" for various values of FOOBAR. Nothing else
happens.

If I import into a brand new book, I get all the dialog prompts for
creating securities and accounts, then ... nothing. The accounts and
securities get created, but there are no transactions (expected) and no
entries in the price database.

Running with --debug shows a bunch of info, and three errors related to
transactions:

* 15:55:51 ERROR  [ofx_proc_transaction_cb()] The transaction
doesn't have a valid amount
* 15:55:51 ERROR  [ofx_proc_transaction_cb()] The transaction
doesn't have a valid amount
* 15:55:51 ERROR  [ofx_proc_transaction_cb()] The transaction
doesn't have a valid amount

Digging into the QFC w/ ofxdump, I see exactly three transactions, all of
type TRANSFER, with # of units: 0.000, and a memo of "Balance Update" so I
think we can ignore them.

What I'm interested in is there are a bunch of ofx_proc_position entries,
with Unit prices and Date of Unit Price. Was hoping these would be imported
into the price database.

Digging through the code in gnucash/import-export/ofx/* I see nothing about
positions. Heading deeper down the rabbit hole, I see libofx added support
for POSITION entries in v 0.10.0 (2021).
So I guess if I want convenient import of security prices, I'll have to
brush up my C++ skills, and dust off the compiler.

Any words of wisdom from more experienced GnuCash users, here?

Re: [GNC] Edit company name heidi

2024-09-15 Thread David Cousens
Heidi,

Using the mailing list takes a bit of getting used to if you are more
used to website type forums.  It is an older technology but has some
advatages as it is much harder to hijack a mailing list and attach
malicious hidden code to it (but not totally impossible).  You may find
it easier to use from a desktop email client rather than a mobile
device.

I also use the mail archive
(https://www.mail-archive.com/gnucash-user@gnucash.org/) in my browser
when I need to view the history of a given topic subject  as if you
choose the message by thread option it tries to link messages which
have the same subject line rather than displaying the messages in
strict date order which makes it much easier to follow specific
conversations.  Your email client on your phone may have a setting to
list by conversation( emails with the same subject line or a
Re:"subject").

To change the Company name, from the GnuCash menu it is File menu item,
then the submenu item Properties which will start the dialogue.  That
dialogue has a tab Business and the first entry on that tab is the edit
box Business Name. Change the name to whatever name you want and then
hit the OK key to save the changes.

That dialogue changes settings which are specific to a given set of
books ie, a given .gnucash data file.

The Edit->Preferences menu item changes the preferences for a given
user logged in to the operating system but these settings will apply to
any sets of books (data files) opened by that user.

A commonly used shorthand for menu selections used by responders on the
mailing list  is "File->Properties->Business" for the above menu
selection.  You will also sometimes see "" used This is
Backus-Naur notation used in computer science and that is just a
placeholder for the name of a specific file.  Whatever is between the
<> brackets will denote what sort of infomation for which it is a
placeholder and you would substitute the appropriate text string name
of the file.

One thing you may find handy , particularly if you are creating sets of
books for more than one entity but it is good practice anyway, is to
place the file for each set of books in its own directory/folder in
your file heirarchy.

GnuCash also creates a logfile and a backup file each time you close
it. If you put each data file in its own directory/folder, the log and
backup files will be created with in that directory/folder. There are
user preferences which you can set to control how many backups and log
files are retained and for how long to retain them. These are very
useful if you have had a long data entry session and the last entry has
caused GnuCash to crash and corrupt the  main datafile as you can
select the last backup entry before it crashed, and open it instead of
the main datafile. The logfile can then be imported after editing it to
remove the last transaction which caused the crash to recover all the
work up to that point.  having these files in their own directory makes
recovery from this sort of error much easier.

Re: [GNC] Heidi still can't Edit company name.

2024-09-15 Thread Geoff

Hello Heidi

I am using version 5.8 of GnuCash on a Windows computer. For me, to
edit the Company Name, I do the following from the Main Menu:

(1) Click on "File"
(2) Choose "Properties"
(3) Wait for the "Book Options" window to open
(4) Click on the "Business" tab of this window
(5) Type the name of your Company in the "Company Name" box
(6) Click the "OK" button

I have attached a screenshot from my computer.

Now, when you say that GnuCash:
> does NoT NOT give me option to Edit or Modify The company name !

What exactly do you see? Is the company Name visible? Can you click on
the Company Name box? Can you enter text? Does it let you save?

Since you are using a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, as Murugan has
suggested, it would help us if you can take a photograph of your own
computer screen to show us what exactly what happens when you attempt to
edit the Company Name. Note that sending images to this mailing list
can be difficult, but do persevere - try and "attach" the image to the
email rather than "pasting" it.

Hope this helps.

Geoff

Re: [GNC] Heidi still can't Edit company name.

2024-09-15 Thread sunfish62--- via gnucash-user
It appears there is some disconnect here. Heidi, when you say you want to edit
the company name, to what name do you refer?

Since you keep telling us that changing the company name in Preferences isn't
working, I suspect you're referring to the text that appears in the title bar
of the application.

If so, then you need to know that the text in the title bar is not the company
name. It's the name of the file in the operating system. To change *that,* do
File->Save As.
