If you have a 8.x or 9.x RELEASE all you have to do is updating to the latest minor-release-patchset and then do a 'freebsd-update upgrade -r 10.0-BETA2', like for every other major release upgrade. I don't know who will manually patch a binary update tool if it's building FreeBSD from sources, but anyway it should be the last note while in the announcement it seems to be the only way to do the upgrade. -- Alex Dupre ___ freebsd-current@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-current To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-current-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode (FUSE related?)
Hi again, I was running out of space on my UFS partition and decided to use big NTFS one I also have on the drive. I've mounted it with ntfs-3g and our native fuse.ko. I needed the scratch space to built Open/LibreOffice on it *LOL*. Well, it failed with a panic (see the excerpt from text core at the end of this email; full debug info is available upon request). hwpstate0: set freq failed patch
Hello, Would it be possible for this patch to get to 10 before it goes -release? http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-stable/2012-May/067758.html I've tested it on an amd 6600k and it seems to be working, a quick google search shows other people have had good results on different cpus. taskqueue_enqueue_fast in freebsd 10.0-current
Hi, In Freebsd 10.0-current with Emulex's OCE driver, I observe that the bottom half is hogging all the CPU which is leading to system sluggishness. I used the same hardware to check the behavior on 9.1-RELEASE, everything is fine, bottom half is not taking more than 10% of the CPU even at the line rate speed. But with half the throughput of line rate in Freebsd-10.0-current all the CPUs peak and "top -aSCHIP" shows that it's all bottom half who is eating the CPU. Did anything changed in Freebsd-10.0-current that I should be careful about? Please clarify. Thanks, Venkat. ___ freebsd-current@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-current To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-current-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

[misc/183407] Routing restart returns non-zero exitcode
misc/183407: Routing restart returns non-zero exitcode in case of no extra routing parameter or missing atm/ipx *Environment* FreeBSD h4ck3r.freebsd.org 9.2-RELEASE FreeBSD 9.2-RELEASE #0 r255898: Thu Sep 26 22:50:31 UTC 2013 r...@bake.isc.freebsd.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64 *Description* Current "/etc/rc.d/routing" script is as such it returns non-zero exitcode on restart in very common cases. There are 2 issues in total... Issue#1. It unsets a var and only in case any additional routing options of the provided communication channel (inet, inet6, atm, ipx) is to be turned on, it gets set. It fails for us as we don't have any extra routing options. For now I've patched it not to fail in case of no additional routing options. Do check if any additional routing option is required or not. Issue#2. There is also error in default case of routing start, where it tries to setroute for all (inet, inet6, atm, ipx) modes. Before that it checks if it's present or not and fails for atm and ipx not being present. Since script is resilient enough, the required configuration gets applied. But the exitcode is erroneous which fails our configuration management tools by making them think the run failed itself. *How-To-Repeat* Shall happend for any install. But to be sure install it on a Virtualbox or any virtualization platform (have myself tried it on Xen and VirtualBox). 10.0-BETA2: LAPIC event timer and C2 c-state -> abnormal high load
Hello! I partially upgraded my workstation from 9.2-RELEASE-p1 to 10.0-BETA2 using freebsd-update. Partially because I only performed the first pass (installing the kernel and rebooting). After the boot, the average load was around 5, with no activity on the computer. I tried again by disabling all services in rc.conf and rebooted: same load. Other symptoms are: o The display (syscons) is only redrawn when hitting random keys on a PS/2 or USB keyboard. o When all services are disabled (even NIC is not configured), the computer isn't able to boot or shutdown in a reasonable time without hitting the keyboard too (I guess to generate some interrupts). The chosen event timer is different between 9.2 and 10.0: 9.2: kern.eventtimer.timer: HPET kern.eventtimer.choice: HPET(450) HPET1(440) HPET2(440) HPET3(440) LAPIC(400) i8254(100) RTC(0) 10.0: kern.eventtimer.timer: LAPIC kern.eventtimer.choice: LAPIC(400) HPET(350) HPET1(340) HPET2(340) HPET3(340) i8254(100) RTC(0) I have hw.acpi.cpu.cx_lowest=C2 in sysctl.conf. I tested the following combinations: o HPET + cx_lowest=C1: normal load, computer responsive o HPET + cx_lowest=C2: normal load, computer responsive o LAPIC + cx_lowest=C1: normal load, computer responsive o LAPIC + cx_lowest=C2: high load /!\ Can someone help me track the problem down? :) Thanks! -- Jean-Sébastien Pédron ___ freebsd-current@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-current To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-current-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

libreadline rl_message() and building the same object file 6 times?
I *think* its safe to change this invocation of rl_message to omit the third argument, but I'm not 100%. Second, why on earth does a buildworld emit this warning 6 times? [RFC] libdispatch (aka Grand Central Dispatch) in base
Hi all, I'd like to bring up the discussion for topic.. Importing libdispatch (aka Apple's Grand Central Dispatch) into base (contrib?). Specifically into HEAD then MFC'd only as far back as stable/10. Here's the reason why: http://devinteske.com/freebsd-installer-enhancements Summary: For the purpose of providing a concurrency model better than pthreads for the expressed desire to bring about concurrent data processing (applicable directly to distributions, packages, signing and more). Multiple people have confirmed with me with respect to the above blog article that the concurrency model would be most efficient with libdispatch. Since the tool mentioned in the blog is a. Compiling with clang b. Requires newest dialog(3) that is only in stable/10 or higher I'd say that it looks like a match made in heaven. But of course, there's that one hang-up... dispatch is not available in base yet. Is anyone working on getting dispatch into base? -- Devin _ The information contained in this message is proprietary and/or confidential. I have no opinion on GCD in base -- probably a good idea -- but I was hoping you could explain further what you are trying to do here. Parallelism in these steps is usually of very limited utility. For checksum evaluation, it could speed things up on multicore systems. For fetch and extract, however, it either has no effect (if you are bandwidth limited during fetch) or slows things down significantly by causing extra seeks. This problem is especially bad for CD installs. For extract, it can actually cause lasting problems on the installed system by increasing disk fragmentation. -Nathan ___ freebsd-current@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-current To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-current-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

In practice had very little use since 90th. Discontinued by major routing equipment vendors since 2009[2]. Since Apple has now even deprecated AFP (the file sharing protocol implemented by netatalk, among others), it’s time to let go. There’s a thriving historic enthusiast community around older Macs and Apple IIs, and I can report that FreeBSD 4 (including then-current versions of netatalk and for those who care, macipgw) works just fine in VirtualBox, on FreeBSD 9-stable. Newer FreeBSD versions will likely work as well. Since AppleTalk (DDP and the layer 3 protocols on top of it) were originally tuned for LocalTalk and it’s 230.4 kbps rate, running a virtualized OS on even very modest hardware will likely incur no performance penalty, so just shove a VM onto any old box. Remember too that what's really being said here is that it will be gone from 11; it's still in FreeBSD 10, and that means FreeBSD will still support those protocols (as much as possible given the lack of upstream support) for many years to come. Think of this as "You have about 4 years to make other arrangements before this support is gone." hey let's not get too confused here.. AFP now runs over IP.. we're talking about removing the old appletalk protocol that is no longer used by apple in new products. -- Ian ___ freebsd-current@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-current To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-current-unsubscr...@freebsd.org" ___ freebsd-current@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-current To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-current-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

This problem is especially > bad for CD installs. For extract, it can actually cause lasting problems on > the installed system by increasing disk fragmentation. The parallel concurrency was actually an after-thought. First... I started with this... http://pastebin.com/LvDtJNGh A straight-forward attempt to see if I could add X11 support by finding a feature that dialog(1) and Xdialog(1) agree upon. They agree that when they are reading pipe data for the gauge widget, they will update their prompt text when the input looks like: XXX New prompt text XXX NB: Literally "XXX" on a line by itself, sandwiching the new prompt. I then quickly rewrote that into C and added dozens of features to get where the fdpv prototype is at now. I'm glad we're having this discussion, because I acknowledge that I very well can push ahead without concurrency (and we may want to do that, because the utility brings other benefits that are foremost on my list behind parallelism). Trying to achieve: 1. X11 support 2. Get rid of the need for temporary files (without sacrificing signing) 3. Internationalization So would you recommend just moving forward without the parallelism so we could add that as a value-add down the line? That would actually speed up the development of fdpv as a new base utility that can take either stdin or a list of fifo's with size and signature data, and verify the data before forking off a tar command, or pkg etc. -- Devin _ The information contained in this message is proprietary and/or confidential.
