Re: [Evolution] Palms and Evolution
Hi, I have a Perl script that takes Palm contacts and produce a file that you can import into evolution. Contact me off-list if you are interested. It's one way, so you have to maintain your stuff in the Palm. I never got evo and Palm to sync reliably, after many years of trying. I haven't tried kpilot and evolution, however, I guess *there are no plugins available for kpilot* to sync with evolution. You have to use evolution + gnomepilot. We had something in mind (and experimental code too) to solve this issue. What happens when Evolution is 'shutdown' (closed/quit/whatever) is that it tries to sync up any changes made locally to the Remote IMAP server. We tried journal-ing any changes that have occurred locally before the last sync and the time when Evolution is being closed and then sync it up the next time Evolution starts (in online mode). But this actually is not the solution for the issue at hand - since we are just 'moving' the problem elsewhere. Not a good idea. And so the code was not committed. And yes, I second Eriks' statement. An App *needs* to cleanup and if its a mail client using a remote server, sync up with changes need to happen. We are working on this surely. But you can never give an upper bound to how long a remote sync will take. Servers go down, networks are disconnected, power failures happen. The essence of a distributed application (of which remote mail is a fairly simple example) is that you can survive these events without loss of data (which is not the same as perfect consistency between client and server, but that was never guaranteed anyway). Re: [Evolution] Palms and Evolution
I would like to second that. For more than a year I try to sync my PDA (HP1900 series) with evolution. It's very important to me as I now have to sync by hand (which is in the daily practice not done!). Opensync is a clumsy mismatch of demons, which won't compile correctly on a 64-bit system. I cannot imagine that it's so difficult to read and write data to an external device (even Microsoft has it accomplished!). What's the difference between a PDA ( or any other external device) or an external CD, HD or whatever? I'm not a low-level programmer any more, although I did some real-time programming on the 486 (remember??), current processors are way over my head. You need to talk to it using its own low-level protocol (which may not be fully documented), and probably a higher-level synch protocol. Currently it's a mess; some combinations of PDA and demon work on some platforms and not on others, user interfaces are crude, there's the whole hotplugging can of worms, etc. etc. These things work on Windows because a) the low-level APIs are not a moving target and b) the manufacturers make sure it all works because it's economically important to them. I have some hope that the Kitchensync project on KDE will eventually sort this out. And frankly no one will care if your idea of a bug report is to say "it doesn't work". Gnome pilot definitely has some problems - like apparently no one working on it, and a bugzilla list which needs serious triage work (or just deleting in most cases). However it does basically work. The major current problem appears to be related to people who are trying to build it (with various patches) against pilot-link 0.12 pre-releases, which are not intended to be production releases (Fedora FC4 in particular shipped with a config which was broken in almost every interface wrt to palm sync). Yes, I am interested in knowing about the bug. (A bugzilla bugid would be more helpful). Well, I would say pilot-link 0.11.8 and gnome-pilot 2.0.12 are a pretty stable combination, that worked for most of the cases. Yes, I agree that the development in gnome-pilot is not agressive, and that's because, it is functional and reached a stage where newer technologies/framework like Opensync can take over it. AFAICT, many of the gnome-pilot bugs in bugzilla are already fixed, but, not marked closed in bugzilla. I use evolution + gnome-pilot, frequently, to sync data with my Tungsten T5 and above all, evolution 2.5.3+ can sync against exchange as well as groupwise calendars/tasks/contacts. As Nigel pointed out, Yes, there are problems when you try with pre-releases of pilot-link. However, the current-CVS-head gnome-pilot works pretty good with 0.12.x pre-release of pilot-link. gnome-pilot, as such, is pretty stable than opensync, w.r.t palm syncing. V. Re: [Evolution] Will evolution send a certificate when asked for ?
I didn't necessarily mean for you to have to do the research, I more or less meant the current maintainers (altho if anyone else did it to help speed up the process, more power to them). I definitely think this needs to be implemented in evolution the sooner the better as you aren't the first person to ask for this and it's probably not all that uncommon a setup. Anyways, I thank you for trying to research it a bit yourself, I think that's an awesome gesture. This is the issue I have been having too, the main reason I asked the list my questions. I have been syncing the rest of the thing just fine for backups using kpilot. That part isn't having problems. But just installing gnome-pilot and the other parts doesn't seem to get anything done. I use the Mandriva club releases as soon as they come out too... so it isn't that I don't have up to date packages for my distro. I can't wait for kitchensync to come out, and would gladly beta that for them but can't seem to find the page to sign up LOL. I have over 200 entries in my address book under Evolution for family alone, and REALLY don't want to enter them all by hand. I really wish that evolution had a client for palms all by itself anyway, as my client that is stock with my palm has no entries for anniversaries. I don't need to sync my email, just the contacts portion. Is there a step by step way to get gnome-pilot to work? The interface alone is really hard to use, as it wants to know what cradle I have, and as far as I know, they don't make one for mine. Do I just put in the Palm device hotsync name? Do I run the kpilot hotsync, then have to run the gnomepilot one seperately and how, from inside Evolution? or will it run fine through kpilot? kpilot seems to say it has an option to use evolution conduits to hotsync with a Palm, but as far as I can tell, hasn't been. Very confusing sometimes, but I am willing to try suggestions. Kind of need my palm for just about everything. Would help a lot to get the contacts to sync up so I can find phone numbers and things without entering the changes by hand every night. ___ Evolution-list mailing list Evolution-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/evolution-list
RE: [Evolution] Problems with evolution 2.4.2.1
Looks like you're missing the mozilla nss devel libraries which I think are needed to get the NTLM authorization for evolution connector to work against OWA from Exchange servers when using TLS(SSL). I'm not sure where it is located under Gentoo but I would have expected emerge to do package dependency checking to get this needed ingredient unless data server/connector aren't being built with that feature. I feel your pain, having attempted to build evolution by hand in the past. The package tools like emerge, or yum, or garnome, or apt-get relieve a lot of the pain. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Terje Bråten Sent: Monday, January 09, 2006 11:30 AM To: evolution-list@gnome.org Subject: [Evolution] Problems with evolution 2.4.2.1 Hi. [Evolution] Resend: Calendar items do not display
Hello. I'm running the stock version of evolution and e-d-s that comes with ubuntu breezy: evolution 2.4.1-0ubuntu7 The groupware suite evolution-data 1.4.1-0ubuntu3 evolution database backend server I recently installed beagle, and running beagled seemed to have somehow destabilized evolution calendar. I can no longer see any calendar entries in the calendar view. When I start evolution, I see the following error messages: (evolution:27121): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_gc_set_foreground: assertion `GDK_IS_GC (gc)' failed (evolution:27121): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_gc_set_foreground: assertion `GDK_IS_GC (gc)' failed Adding a new event by hand doesn't show any error message, but that too doesn't show up, even though the data gets into the local calendar.ics file in ~/.evolution. Is this a known issue? What is happening? How can I fix this? I tried to reset evolution data by removing the ~/.evolution directory, but the data is rebuilt - possibly e-d-s keeps a cache somewhere else? If so, how can I wipe out all data and start from scratch? If I log in as another user on the system, there are no such issues, i.e., the calendar shows up fine, so I'd really like to wipe out the data and retry, rather than install upgrades. [Evolution] Bad surprise with Evolution when finally upgraded...
Hello everyone, I am a casual linux user. I recognized however linux definetly rocks for internet-related tasks mainly because it allows me to spend more time (and money) on my issues and less time on removing dialers and installing antivirus bloatware. Here's the hard truth: I upgraded from Evolution 1.2 (from RedHat9.0) to Evolution 2.2 (Fedora Core 4). I knew the new evolution uses '~/.evolution' instead of '~/evolution' so I happily renamed the directory and fired up the new program. Well, I knew it wouldn't did it but I tried anyway. I must say I was not surprised at all when Evolution2.2 gave up with the migration. Strangely enough, the procedure seems to be quite simple. I was able to recover my mails by just moving some files around and renaming them. This rocked. It turns out I'm not so lucky with the address book (which is the most important thing for some users using this PC). I tried replacing "~/.evolution/addressbook/local/system" but it didn't work. I am not even sure those two files are really used since I can delete them and the address book still shows up with the few test entries I made. I looked around my new home dir but I simply cannot figure out where the address book is kept. I have an almost complete backup of all the home directories. I did some searchs on the net but I severely lack connectivity so this is an extremely time consuming process. I read Evo1.4 shares addressbook format with 2.0 so I am confident a smooth transition is possible. If someone could give me an hint on where to put the old address files I would be grateful. [Evolution] syncing my pocket pc with evolution via multisync/opensync/synce
Hello, I'm using multisync (with its friends opensync and synce, I think) to sync my pocketPC to my UbuntuLinux computer with Evolution 2.4.1. 1. Why is the Appointment-Time wrong? For example, on my PDA, I entered an appointment for 1:30pm-2:30pm on December 13, Tuesday. But on Evolution, it shows up as 10:30pm-11:30pm on the same day. The strange thing is: when I double-click on the appointment in Evolution, in the "appointment tab" 's "date and time" section, the time is correct (1:30pm -- 2:30 pm), but the time zone is wrong. The time zone is at UTC. I'm currently in Japan. My PDA is set to Japan time. My Ubuntu linux pc is set to Japan Time, and Evolution is set to Japan Time. Why are all appointments saved as UTC time zone? Do I have to manually switch each appointment from UTC to my Japan Time Zone? 2. My contacts in PDAs have a section called "Notes". This is the place to enter stuff that don't fit in the fill-in-the blank forms (e.g. Email address, mobile phone number). I make use of the Notes section to enter information that :I have for that contact. But it doesn't sync to evolution. What can be done about this? 3. [Evolution] Connecting to Exchange server without webdav-api
Hi I need to connect to an exchange server for work. It's not running the OWA or Webdav-service and hence evolution-exchange is no good here. So I need someway to connect "directly" to the Exchange server as if I'm actually using Outlook. So I've looked into it and someone on the kolab-list suggested I look at Brutus. However Brutus is more or less undocumented. But I gathered that I have o set up some sort of a brutus server on a Windows-system in order for it to work(And if I still need a running Windows box, I might aswell use outlook on it?!). So, can I do a setup of Brutus that'll run entirely on my own linux-laptop or are there any other projects out there that might help me connect to an exchange server. It doesn't have to be evolution-related (I don't care what client it is), I just need to access the tasklist of my and one other user. I thought you might be the crowd to ask. Hi All, I have been trying to track down anyone who has been able to successfully add/modify contacts to an LDAP server. I am able to query the LDAP for contacts successfully, but viewing the contact (or attempting to save a contact to the LDAP), has all of the details greyed out. This is with using the DN logon and the directory admin as the user id (separate question - where do you enter the password for the login ?). I am running the following: OpenLDAP v 2.2.26-3 Evolution 2.4.1 I have been able to successfully add contacts through a simple php page to the LDAP server using the same credentials - so pretty confident the access control is no the problem on the LDAP server. [Evolution] Exchange 2003 and Evolution connector problem
Hi, This is my first post on this forum and I hope I could have some help^or advice about an issue I have with evolution. Just for the record : I have a project to use a linux box (SUSE 10) as I use an xp box in my corporate network. To do so, I need and email client that could be use the same way that users use their Outlook 2000 app. I also do not want to modify too much my exchange 2003 settings because I need the email client on the linux box to conect to the exchange server with to other settings that an xp box does, meaning that the linux box have to adapt itself with the corporate environement. After looking around the net, I have found that only evolution is able to connect to exchange 2000/2003 in 'native' mode, meaning no IMAP, POP or other special config. I have installed it, I hope with the latest version but when it comes to the configuration, it always hang ... Here you wil find some little informations about my settings, I will post some other debug info later if needed (like IIS log file, ethereal dump). HAve anyone of you be able to make evolution works with Exchange 2003 ? I really need some help here because I don't know what makes the app hang : some settings on the server side or maybe some setup on evolution. [Evolution] Getting a new dictionary after installing Evolution.
Hi, After installing Evolution on a new machine, I realized that I didn't add a German dictionary to use with spell check. I'm running Debian/unstable, and I had gnome-spell, aspell, aspell-de, and all the others installed but the list of dictionaries would not show up in Evolution (under Edit->Preferences=>Composer Preferences->Spell Checking). It states under the list of available dictionaries: "The list of languages here reflects only the languages for which you have a dictionary installed". Well, I had English installed before I installed evolution (and that showed up), but after installing German it would not show up. So I finally did a strace on evolution to see what it was doing. I noticed that it did a stat of /usr/lib/aspell but nothing more (must be cached). So I moved /usr/lib/aspell to /usr/lib/xaspell, and started evolution again. Went to the spell check and saw that, as expected, no dictionaries were available. I then got back out of evolution, moved /usr/lib/xaspell back to /usr/lib/aspell, restarted evolution, and wah-lah, I had not only my English dictionaries there, I also had my German ones too! I'm posting this for two reasons. 1) maybe others with the same problem can use this solution to fix it. 2) maybe the developers of Evolution will not just cache /usr/lib/aspell, but actually see if any new dictionaries are present. (I also posted to both evolution-list and evolution-hackers so that the above two reasons will better be satisfied.) I'm not on the list so please CC me for any comments. [Evolution] ASCII version of an HTML table...
I'm increasingly finding that I like being able to compose messages with HTML tables in them. They're a really good way of presentation some kinds of information. -But-, as I compose them in evolution and send them to multiple readers, and some of those readers have MUA's that don't render HTML tables by default, people sometimes (often even) end up reading the ASCII version of the tables instead. That'd be fine, except it seems that the ASCII version of these tables that evolution is presenting isn't especially good. Specifically, it seems to be flattening the tables out into a linear list. Is there any way of improving this - perhaps by getting evo to run an HTML table through "links -dump" or similar to get a better ASCII version of the tables, or rather of HTML documents in general, which happens to include tables? Postfix sounds like a good approach if your setup allows, but here is also a client-side hack which mostly works for me (I'm sure there are better ways to parse the database file): Create a evo filter rule like such, which preceeds any junk test rules: If 'Pipe to program' returns 0, then 'Move to folder' Inbox/Ham, and 'Unset status' 'Junk', ..., 'Stop processing'. The program I use to parse my contacts is this: #!/bin/bash strings ~/.evolution/addressbook/local/system/addressbook.db | \ grep EMAIL | \ awk -F: '{print $NF }' > ~/.evo2-contacts egrep \ `cat | egrep ^From: $1 | cut -d: -f2 | sed -e 's/[<>]/\n/g' | egrep @` ~/.evo2-contacts \ 2>&1 >> /dev/null exit $? ___ Evolution-list mailing list Evolution-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/evolution-list

When you find bugs (eg SSL certs handling), you get no patch, only a "update-to-latest-os-version" recommendation, which means you have to buy new hardware. Aren't you getting the password expiry error message with the "Change Password" button, while logging in? Thanks, Sushma. You need to enable the new address book for atuo-completion. You can do this here: Edit->Preferences->Auto Completion Check all the addressbooks you need. Re: [Evolution] evolution will not start anymore
Hi Terrence, Could you try using strace or gdb?? The traces from strace or gdb would help us in determining the exact nature of the problem. Also, what type of accounts do you have configured?? Feel free to file a bug at bugzilla.gnome.org with the traces. A solution might be to make a filter to pipe your draft to an external script, which could do a links -dump on it, and then add a plain-text component, and copy it back to your drafts folder, or something. Its a bit convoluted, but it would let you tailer the output just how you want it, and once you have the process working, it'd be quite fast, especially for lots of emails. Alternatively, you _might_ be able to edit the local file that evo stores its mail in (close evo first) and pretty it up by hand there, before you send it. Re: [Evolution] copying all email addresses from a folder .. how?
Thanks Partha, Too bad. As an alternative it would be nice if I could set up an address book with different folders and send these addresses to a specific folder but I guess there is no way to do that either. It appears that the address book is just one folder wide. If you have specified the login method using DN, then it should prompt for the password while connecting. Can you run Evolution and EDS from console and see if any log messages are printed? [Evolution] KDE servicemenus
I'd like to add an "Email using Evolution" action in Konqueror (where right-clicking on a file would open Evo with the file attached). I found the mechanism to create the servicemenu entry, but am having trouble with the appropriate command line option to open a compose window with the file attached. I found an old email from Guenther as a reference, but couldn't get it to work. Am I right in assuming that non-KDE apps can be set up this way? If so, can anyone help with the command line options?
