Re: System VM template caching

2013-10-09 Thread Ahmad Emneina
there might be a more sound way than swapping the template on secondary
storage and hacking the db. I figure one should be able to register the
template, via the documented route... wait for download to succeed, upgrade
the binary bits. then when the system vm's fail to launch. delete the
cached template on primary storage. That should be enough to trigger a new
system vm propagated to the primary storage. I find it hard to believe this
passed QA...

you might not have shared local storage in your cloud. so having to add

basic networks dont really require that level of flexibility. Sure you
suffer a small dns/dhcp outage... So it definitely depends on the purpose
of the cloud, and services its going to provide. We cant negate the
flexibility local storage system vm's provides.

Sounds like a UI issue and not an API or backend bug. Care to try via API and
file a bug for the correct component that's busted?

Sorry Pranav, I wasnt trying to single it out as a UI issue, at least not
until the root cause is identified. I recommend firing up firebug or dev
tools (depending on browser) and see if an API call is being made when
hitting that button. Then we can figure out whats going wrong.

Re: [DISCUSS] Should we be releasing -beta releases?

I like the idea of nightly builds. Hopefully it could be tied into Jenkins and
have passed some sort of quality check. That way only known 'good' builds are
exposed.

I agree, there need's to be a caveat the nightly builds are convenience

for testing.

this sounds like you either want to customize the UI (maybe as simple as
check to see if an admin is trying to log in from the 'user portal' and
reject it at login) or create your own custom UI...

My preference leans towards option 2. Dont release until we have a valid
path for the 2.x cast aways to return back to a more modern version. Do we
know the LOE required to bring the advanced security groups back for

I'm +0 on this, dont want to hold up a release with a neg 1 vote. My
opinion is that time sync is critical piece for system vm's. Having the
wrong time can lead to system vm's booting and waiting for manual
intervention via consistency checks (potential blocker bug IMO).

what do you get in your management-server.log (on the management server)
and the agent.log (kvm host)? Feel free to paste them to
paste.cloudstack.org and share the link, that should help troubleshoot.

also, when trying to add the iso, can you capture the output in the ssvms'
cloud.out or cloud.log (cant remember which). It would be interesting to
see whats happening on the ssvm side of things.

can you check the output of /var/log/cloud/cloud.out when adding the iso.
Also if youre adding the iso from an internal web server, make sure you
have secstorage.allowed.internal.sites set to the internal ip or range of
where you host those images.

did you restart the management service after modifying that global param?
it's required. It will then add an exception to the ssvm's firewall, to
allow for that traffic.

I'm +1 on this. I feel global setting (relating to expunge and cleanup) should
be set to aggressively expunge deleted resources, then delete the user
resources... before deleting the account. That way we can verify garbage
collection of resources is working properly.

I would love to see multiple image formats opened up for hypervisors. Live
Wido said... KVM alone can support a myriad of image formats. Using ceph
requires an import of qcow2 and a conversion of that to RAW on every deploy

That seems to be the latest stable release for the KVM template (according
to the 4.1 install docs). You can also get bleeding edge templates from:

interested in ipv6 support and other features that didnt make it into
'-stable'.

one typically adds a cluster during zone creation or adds the cluster as a
unit (which maps to the vmware dc/cluster). I believe at the cluster
addition phase, is where you should be prompted for credentials. Give that
a try, see if you get any miles out of that.

Re: Basic Zone network configuration

2013-07-22 Thread Ahmad Emneina
Hey Thomas,

Basic zones dont explicitly work with vlans. If you have vlan's behind the
scenes, say native vlans, it shouldnt be an issue as long as your relevant
networks can route to each other.

Say for example I have my management server sitting on the
192.168.10.0/24segment with hosts, system vm's and guest vm's on the
192.168.11.0/24 segment, there shouldnt be an issue. All assuming they can
communicate back and forth between those networks. HTH

Re: [rant] stupid test cases

2013-07-23 Thread Ahmad Emneina
In terms of integration tests, it could be broken up into smaller pieces,
but as part of an overall 'networking functional' suite. Maybe we need to
further divide the tests between functional tests and unit or integration
tests. We really need to improve the testing around error handling and the
lifecycle of a feature.

For example network.gc does its job in cleaning up rules after a network
has shut down. But when restarting a vm in said network, none of the
previous rules get reinstated. That to me is brittle and needs to mature...
sorry for the anti-rant :p

Re: [Proposal] Routing between guest networks in VLAN isolation method.

2013-07-23 Thread Ahmad Emneina
it looks like this is meant to enable routing between two different guest
isolated networks. Also suggests the ability to allow natted traffic
through another accounts network. I'd like to know more as to why someone
would want this, I dont see how the natting would work since the CIDR for
both networks are identical (forgive the ignorance here).

Re: Proofreading of our procedure to cleanly re-create vrouters and restart CloudStack on a running VMware cluster after an interruption

Hey Guillaume, not sure why you have to manually edit the db. After an
upgrade. Assuming you followed the steps in the release notes, you could
make the api call to rebootrouter on all the routers and that should do the
trick of recreating them properly.

just dawned on me, you might have to forget the storage pools (if no vm's
are running) on the hosts. Then reconnect the kvm agents (by restarting the
service on the hosts or from cloudstack-> force reconnect command). they

Re: community testing

2013-09-10 Thread Ahmad Emneina
I think there are jenkins slaves that run the nicera plugins on/at Schuberg
Philis housed infrastructure. The Citrix jenkins nodes also runs as slaves
that connect back to the apache owned/controlled jenkins. No reason why
testing infra need be so consolidated, it just so happens no one is putting
their hardware where their mouth is.

I also assume if your marvin tests get accepted upstream, they'll be
included in the nightly runs/reports. Prasanna correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: community testing

2013-09-10 Thread Ahmad Emneina
That's a good question, I'm not sure how preconditions work with Marvin cases,
but I know the tests are run generically. Say I run copyvolumeToPrimary (not
sure this test exists, hypothetical at the moment), it gets run against a slew
of infrastructure configurations using local storage as well as shared (NSF,
iscsi, ceph...) back ends. So just dropping my test into a storage suite should
give it some guarantee its hitting a few different storage back-ends. That's
how i understand it works today, I'll defer to Prasanna or Sudha... Or anyone
else that runs tests aggressively to fill in the gaps and make corrections.

If your primary storage were able to successfully transition into maintenance
mode, you'd be able to remove it. You'll need a second PS attached to the
cluster, so vm's can migrate off the storage that's going into maintenance OR
disable the zone and nuke the system vm's power down the guest vm's wait for
storage cleanup to run, then try the process of putting the storage into
maintenance and removing it.

care to post your management server logs, after trying to perform the
maintenance action. It should reveal an error and possibly clues as to why
it doesnt want to transition your storage.

so cloudstack should be controlling your storage via the hypervisor. you'll
need to check the health of the storage via the hypervisor. see if youre
able to provision a vm to it.
