[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2085144] [NEW] the gjs application permanently consumes more than 100% of a processor
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Hello. I just upgraded from version 24.04.1 to version 24.10. Since I connected, I constantly hear the noise of the fan. Using the top command, I notice that the gjs application consumes more than 100% of a processor. This doesn't seem normal to me and I don't know what to look for to explain this behavior. If I kill the application, it automatically regenerates and has the same behavior. THANKS. lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. You did not mention Firefox, with comes pre-installed. Does the problem not happen there or did you just not test it there? Your home interface is connected. Do you have a non-conventional home directory, or is it the usual /home/USER? The Apparmor log indicates the latter, but I want to confirm it. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2085340] Re: Plenty of amdgpu backtraces post resume
I enabled that debug option thingy. I'll try to have a go at a mainline kernel build at some point. Now the problem is I can't reproduce this so far. gnome-shell/xwayland randomly exits at some point without any explanation (you can see it just starts broken pipe at 12:31:54, no crash before, I need to find the cause for that and report another bug :(), and then it *might* trigger a suspend when switching to the gdm session. But like not every logout (forced or manual) triggers that. I think the hard part is that it suspends while it's VT switching to gdm. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2085340 Title: Plenty of amdgpu backtraces post resume Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in mesa package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: This is a very weird case: The GNOME session crashed 3 times today, the last time, it went to gdm, but then gdm did not recognize it was docked and suspended. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2033259] Re: [SRU] NetworkManager triggers a call from (old) Netplan Python CLI into (old) libnetplan0 that got replaced by (new) libnetplan1 on dist-upgrade
** Description changed: + [ Impact ] + + * Context: Running a dist-upgrade from Jammy to Noble. + * Starting with Noble (Mantic actually), NetworkManager integrates with Netplan as a backend and calls 'netplan generate' at different stages, e.g. when migrating old /etc/NetworkManager/sytem-connections/ profiles to /etc/netplan/ on package upgrade. + * NetworkManager depends on Netplan >= 0.106 only, but there was a major SOVER/ABI bump of libnetplan, starting with Netplan v1.0. The new build-dependency on libnetplan1 >= 1.0 is automatically picked up, but the runtime dependency on the Netplan CLI (netplan.io binary) is not. + * Therefore, we can end up in a situation where the old netplan.io Python CLI is still installed during dist-upgrade and tries to call into the new libnetplan1, which is incompatible. + * Furthermore, python3-netplan ships a python3.10 specific _netplan_cffi.cpython-310-x86_64-linux-gnu.so binary module, while python3-netplan on Noble++ ships a universal _netplan_cffi.abi3.so binary module. The old one can lead to issues when python3 is already upgraded. + * Incompatible versions of Netplan CLI, Netplan Python bindings and libnetplan can lead to crashes of the Netplan CLI, like this: AttributeError: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libnetplan.so.1: undefined symbol: netplan_get_id_from_nm_filename + + * Such crash doesn't always happen, as it depends on the ordering of + package upgrades during dist-upgrade. It will recover itself after the + dist-upgrade is complete and all components are at their expected + versions again. So side-effects are rather small, but it can lead to + blocking of phased-updates for Netplan, which we'd like to avoid (LP: + #2058031). + + * We want to make sure NetworkManager pulls in the latest libnetplan1, + netplan.io and python3-netplan packages on dist-upgrade, to avoid such + issues. Therefore declaring corresponding dependencies on the network- + manager binary package in debian/control. Such changes are not needed on + series after Noble, as recent Netplan is much more resilient against + such issues, using a python stable API binary module + (_netplan_cffi.abi3.so), using dh-python & ${python3:Depends} substvars, + and providing a stable libnetplan1 library. + + [ Test Plan ] + + $ lxc launch ubuntu-daily:jammy jj-nm-np + $ lxc shell jj-nm-np + + # Verify old version of Netplan (< 1.0) + root@jj-nm-np:~# dpkg -l | grep netplan + ii libnetplan0:amd64 0.106.1-7ubuntu0.22.04.4 amd64YAML network configuration abstraction runtime library + ii netplan.io 0.106.1-7ubuntu0.22.04.4 amd64YAML network configuration abstraction for various backends + + root@jj-nm-np:~# sed -i 's/jammy/noble/g' /etc/apt/sources.list + root@jj-nm-np:~# apt update + root@jj-nm-np:~# apt install network-manager + + => Make sure libnetplan1 >= 1.0, netplan.io >= 1.0 and python3-netplan + >= 1.0 are installed and the Netplan CLI does not crash, e.g.: + + root@jj-nm-np:~# dpkg -l | grep netplan + ii libnetplan0:amd64 0.106.1-7ubuntu0.22.04.4 amd64YAML network configuration abstraction runtime library + ii libnetplan1:amd64 1.0.1-1ubuntu2~24.04.1 amd64Declarative network configuration runtime library + ii netplan-generator 1.0.1-1ubuntu2~24.04.1 amd64Declarative network configuration systemd-generator + ii netplan.io 1.0.1-1ubuntu2~24.04.1 amd64Declarative network configuration for various backends + ii python3-netplan 1.0.1-1ubuntu2~24.04.1 amd64Declarative network configuration Python bindings + root@jj-nm-np:~# netplan generate + + On a broken system, it looks like this: + root@jj-nm-np:~# dpkg -l | grep netplan.io + ii netplan.io 0.106.1-7ubuntu0.22.04.4 amd64YAML network configuration abstraction for various backends + root@jj-nm-np:~# dpkg -l | grep netplan + ii libnetplan0:amd64 0.106.1-7ubuntu0.22.04.4 amd64YAML network configuration abstraction runtime library + ii libnetplan1:amd64 1.0.1-1ubuntu2~24.04.1 amd64Declarative network configuration runtime library + ii netplan.io 0.106.1-7ubuntu0.22.04.4 amd64YAML network configuration abstraction for various backends + root@jj-nm-np:~# netplan generate + Traceback (most recent call last): + File "/usr/sbin/netplan", line 20, in + from netplan import Netplan + File "/usr/share/netplan/netplan/__init__.py", line 18, in + from netplan.cli.core import Netplan + File "/usr/share/netplan/netplan/cli/core.py", line 24, in + import netplan.cli.utils as utils + File "/usr/share/netplan/netplan/cli/utils.py", line 27, in + import ne

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2084731] Re: Not report 6 GHz capability correctly
FTR: I've just uploaded a bundled SRU for network-manager 1.46.0-1ubuntu2.2, containing the changes from this bug report and additionally the changes from bug #2033259 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2084731 Title: Not report 6 GHz capability correctly Status in OEM Priority Project: New Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in network-manager source package in Noble: Fix Committed Bug description: [Impact] network-manager not report 6GHz capability even hardware able to support 6GHz band [Test Plan] 1. nmcli -f wifi-properties.6ghz device show $DEV 2. should get correct result on 6GHz band enabled system "WIFI-PROPERTIES.6GHZ: yes" [Where problems could occur] If the parsing is incorrect, the status of WIFI-PROPERTIES.2GHZ, WIFI-PROPERTIES.5GHZ and WIFI-PROPERTIES.6GHZ may be incorrect. A codesearch query suggests those properties are only used by settings panels to reflect capabilities in the UI so if something went wrong the visible impact should be to have wrong information displayed. This SRU add attribute NL80211_ATTR_SPLIT_WIPHY_DUMP to split wiphy data across multiple messages, then parse the message one by one to get full supported frequencies. This attribute added after Linux 3.9. And there is not other function impact. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2033259] Re: [SRU] NetworkManager triggers a call from (old) Netplan Python CLI into (old) libnetplan0 that got replaced by (new) libnetplan1 on dist-upgrade
I've uploaded network-manager 1.46.0-1ubuntu2.2 into the Noble UNAPPROVED queue for SRU review: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/noble/+queue?queue_state=1&queue_text=network-manager I'm bundling this with the pending SRU for 1.46.0-1ubuntu2.1 (LP: #2084731) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2033259 Title: [SRU] NetworkManager triggers a call from (old) Netplan Python CLI into (old) libnetplan0 that got replaced by (new) libnetplan1 on dist- upgrade Status in netplan.io package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in netplan.io source package in Jammy: New Status in network-manager source package in Jammy: Invalid Status in netplan.io source package in Noble: Won't Fix Status in network-manager source package in Noble: In Progress Status in netplan.io source package in Oracular: Won't Fix Status in network-manager source package in Oracular: Fix Released Bug description: [ Impact ] * Context: Running a dist-upgrade from Jammy to Noble. * Starting with Noble (Mantic actually), NetworkManager integrates with Netplan as a backend and calls 'netplan generate' at different stages, e.g. when migrating old /etc/NetworkManager/sytem-connections/ profiles to /etc/netplan/ on package upgrade. * NetworkManager depends on Netplan >= 0.106 only, but there was a major SOVER/ABI bump of libnetplan, starting with Netplan v1.0. The new build-dependency on libnetplan1 >= 1.0 is automatically picked up, but the runtime dependency on the Netplan CLI (netplan.io binary) is not. * Therefore, we can end up in a situation where the old netplan.io Python CLI is still installed during dist-upgrade and tries to call into the new libnetplan1, which is incompatible. * Furthermore, python3-netplan ships a python3.10 specific _netplan_cffi.cpython-310-x86_64-linux-gnu.so binary module, while python3-netplan on Noble++ ships a universal _netplan_cffi.abi3.so binary module. The old one can lead to issues when python3 is already upgraded. * Incompatible versions of Netplan CLI, Netplan Python bindings and libnetplan can lead to crashes of the Netplan CLI, like this: AttributeError: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libnetplan.so.1: undefined symbol: netplan_get_id_from_nm_filename * Such crash doesn't always happen, as it depends on the ordering of package upgrades during dist-upgrade. It will recover itself after the dist-upgrade is complete and all components are at their expected versions again. So side-effects are rather small, but it can lead to blocking of phased-updates for Netplan, which we'd like to avoid (LP: #2058031). * We want to make sure NetworkManager pulls in the latest libnetplan1, netplan.io and python3-netplan packages on dist-upgrade, to avoid such issues. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2033259] Re: [SRU] NetworkManager triggers a call from (old) Netplan Python CLI into (old) libnetplan0 that got replaced by (new) libnetplan1 on dist-upgrade

Therefore declaring corresponding dependencies on the network-manager binary package in debian/control. Such changes are not needed on series after Noble, as recent Netplan is much more resilient against such issues, using a python stable API binary module (_netplan_cffi.abi3.so), using dh-python & ${python3:Depends} substvars, and providing a stable libnetplan1 library. That's something may have happened, but it's weird that a restart could lead to load a not-yet configured new gnome-shell (as its dependency has not been configured yet). [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2032824] Re: Veth pairs fail activation on Jammy
The changes landed in upstream NetworkManager between 1.39.10-dev and 1.41.8-dev all of which is included in Noble. ** Changed in: network-manager (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2032824 Title: Veth pairs fail activation on Jammy Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in network-manager source package in Jammy: Triaged Bug description: Network Manager 1.36 has a bug that prevents it to activate veth pairs. The problem was found in the Netplan's CI with the new support for veths in Netplan (because we run the tests on Jammy). How to reproduce the problem: 1) Launch a Jammy VM and install network-manager lxc launch ubuntu:jammy jammy --vm lxc shell jammy apt -y install network-manager 2) Set the default Netplan's renderer to NetworkManager so NM can manage interfaces (it will make Netplan create the file /var/run/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf) netplan set --origin-hint=50-cloud-init network.renderer=NetworkManager netplan apply 3) Create the veth pair nmcli con add type veth ifname veth0 peer veth1 ipv4.method disabled ipv6.method disabled nmcli con add type veth ifname veth1 peer veth0 ipv4.method disabled ipv6.method disabled 4) Reboot 5) Check with "nmcli con show" that the new connections were not activated, even though both interfaces were created in the system. Also, check the systemd journal and you should see this error message: [1692805758.9025] manager: (veth-veth0) couldn't create the device: Failed to create veth interface 'veth0' for 'veth-veth0': exists Try the very same steps on Lunar and you'll see that the connections will be activated just fine. This issue appears to be fixed by this commit https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/-/commit/4655b7c308461ae1f86d592ea6d45e00a2820423 I created a PPA with the fix here https://launchpad.net/~danilogondolfo/+archive/ubuntu/network-manager If you run the same steps again on Jammy with this PPA you'll see it fixes this issue. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2028016] Re: Drop Channels feature?
Yeah, none of the online "Channels" work. When switching to the "Channels" tab and trying to click any of the pre- installed online channels, none of them works: - Clicking "Rai.tv" and opening on any of the categories causes Totem to crash on SIGSEGV. - Clicking "Apple Movie Trailers" causes lots of parser errors to be printed on stdout and Totem to hang. - Clicking "Euronews" displays an empty window. It would be the best to just remove them, sadly Totem has no active maintainer[1] and is on a basic "life support" now, and grilo-plugins also do not seem to be much active. Upstream tickets: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/grilo-plugins/-/issues/89 https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/grilo-plugins/-/issues/90 https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/grilo-plugins/-/issues/91 [1] https://www.hadess.net/2023/08/new-responsibilities.html ** Bug watch added: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/grilo-plugins/-/issues #89 https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/grilo-plugins/-/issues/89 ** Bug watch added: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/grilo-plugins/-/issues #90 https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/grilo-plugins/-/issues/90 ** Bug watch added: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/grilo-plugins/-/issues #91 https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/grilo-plugins/-/issues/91 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to totem in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2028016 Title: Drop Channels feature? Status in Totem: New Status in totem package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Ubuntu's default video app, Totem, includes a Channels tab with 3 web video providers: - Apple Movie Trailers - Euronews - Rai.tv Screenshot attached. I recommend that we disable this feature because - These are somewhat obscure video sources - It can be unexpected to parents, school administrators, etc. for this app to be able to view web content - Perhaps most importantly, none of these 3 sources seemed to work today in my clean Ubuntu 23.04 install. + Apple Movie Trailers worked after I installed the additional media support which is offered in the Ubuntu installer (ubuntu-restricted-addons which specifically installs gstreamer1.0-libav) + Based on the errors shown in my terminal, it looks like Euronews either changed their API or it's no longer available. - If these channels can be broken and we aren't getting bug reports, are people actually even using this feature? Implementation -- This feature is enabled by some plugins shipped in totem's src/plugins . They can be disabled by the meson build. Also, totem depends on grilo-plugins-0.3-base which provides supporting files. None of the plugins works if that dependency is removed. We would then also need to patch Totem to no longer show the Channels page in the Totem app. To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/totem/+bug/2028016/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[ Test Plan ] * To verify the fix, ensure that the file `/etc/default/grub.d/oem-flavour.cfg` is successfully removed from the affected system after applying the update. * After the system reboots, check that it boots into the general HWE kernel rather than the OEM kernel. * Idempotency Testing: - Perform the upgrade multiple times on the same system to verify that the upgrade process is idempotent, ensuring that repeated upgrades do not result in unexpected behavior or changes. * Non-OEM System Testing: - Test the upgrade on a system without OEM kernels to ensure that the upgrade does not affect systems that are not preloaded with the OEM kernel. - Confirm that the system continues to function normally and boots into the correct kernel after the update. [ Where problems could occur ] * Removing `/etc/default/grub.d/oem-flavour.cfg` may cause systems relying on the OEM kernel for specific hardware compatibility to lose access to certain OEM-specific optimizations. * There is a low risk that after removing the OEM kernel, some hardware features may not function as expected if the general HWE kernel does not fully support them. [ Other Info ] * This patch is targeted only for Ubuntu 22.04 and its associated OEM kernels. * The issue is specific to systems using NVIDIA drivers in conjunction with an outdated OEM kernel, which conflicts with updates to the HWE kernel and NVIDIA packages. 1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -> About $ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS Release: 22.04 $ ubuntu-report show | grep DCD "DCD": "canonical-oem-sutton-jammy-amd64-20240606-874" 2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname' or by checking in Software Center $ apt-cache policy ubuntu-drivers-common ubuntu-drivers-common: Installed: 1:0.9.6.2~0.22.04.6 Candidate: 1:0.9.6.2~0.22.04.7 Version table: 1:0.9.6.2~0.22.04.7 500 500 http://tw.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy-updates/main amd64 Packages *** 1:0.9.6.2~0.22.04.6 100 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 1:0.9.6.1 500 500 http://tw.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy/main amd64 Packages 3) What you expected to happen * The system should seamlessly upgrade NVIDIA drivers and the HWE kernel without breaking the boot process. The system should boot into the latest supported HWE kernel without encountering compatibility issues with the NVIDIA drivers. 4) What happened instead * After unattended-upgrades, the system rebooted into the OEM kernel, which is outdated and incompatible with the new NVIDIA drivers. As a result, the screen remained black upon reboot. We need to remove /etc/default/grub.d/oem-flavour.cfg to avoid the system booting from deprecated OEM kernels. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2084605] Re: File|(all options) can no longer be accessed via keystrokes
I found an older Ubuntu box (18.04) with older LO/Calc (6.4.7.2) and Gnome rather than Wayland, and it works correctly: [Alt+F] opens the File menu, and the New sub-menu then auto-opens, but the File menu’s options remain available for keystroke selection. I then installed LODev 6.4.0.0.alpha0+ for testing, and the issue is present using this version on my system. Thus, it does not appear to be only a LO issue. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2079039] Re: signature stored on a nfs share not working with the snap
"browser.download.force_save_internally_handled_attachments" did only help for a week, after this weekend I have to configure the signatures each morning again. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to thunderbird in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2079039 Title: signature stored on a nfs share not working with the snap Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: We work in workspace with changing pcs. (home folders are in the network) We migrated from Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Desktop to Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS Desktop. We use thunderbird 128.1.0esr-1 through snap. Our signature all lie on an nfs mount (/var/nfs/oeffentlich/emailsignaturen/) (fstab: nfs.mydomain:/var/nfs /var/nfs nfs4 _netdev,default), where everybody as read access (drwxr-xr-x 1 nobody nogroup 5,3K Aug 28 09:27 emailsignaturen). After the update, Thunderbird no longer pointed to "/var/nfs/oeffentlich/emailsignaturen/mysignature.html" but to "/home/myuser/var/nfs/oeffentlich/emailsignaturen/mysignature.html". Correcting this to "/var/nfs/oeffentlich/emailsignaturen/mysignature.html" by directly editing the text, did not show an error, but the signature wasn't shown. Using the file open dialog and selecting "/var/nfs/oeffentlich/emailsignaturen/mysignature.html" Thunderbird / snap changed the link to: "/run/user/2087/doc/e967c83e/mysignature.html" Now the signature is shown, but only as long as I'm on the same pc. When switching to another PC the linked file isn't there and I again have no signature. No clue, whether this is a thunderbird or snap issue, but this is really a pain! Would be nice if this could be fixed.
