[Bug 1960621] Re: MATE Desktop session fails to start with NVIDIA 495 & 510 drivers

2022-02-25 Thread Ian
Thank you, Martin.

I do indeed have Marco with the 'adaptive compositor' (it's the default,
I think...)

It's been ages since I used Compiz, but... :)

[Bug 1960621] Re: MATE Desktop session fails to start with NVIDIA 495 & 510 drivers

2022-02-25 Thread Ian
It turns out that I may have misunderstood - the same thing happens for
me when telling MATE Tweak that I want to use Compiz rather than Marco
as my window manager.

The switch to Compiz certainly happens (I am reminded of why I stopped
using it..) and it is sticky between reboots.

So either it's not just a Marco thing or some part of Marco is retained
when using Compiz.

[Bug 1278437] Re: can't move link type .desktop files around on desktop

2015-11-11 Thread Ian
A few discoveries in 15.10:
1. This bug doesn't affect non-URL type files.
2. (URL files only) Comment four doesn't work for me. Nautilus just crashes and
all my files disappear until I log out and log back in.
3. (URL files only) If I repeat comment four with a file instead of a
directory, it doesn't move anything but creates a new file-'thisismyurl.com
(http)'.

But yeah, as far as bugs go this seems fairly trivial (but annoying) to
me :D.

[Bug 312401] Re: Sound Juicer have no MP3 selection, but can be edit under profile ?

2009-01-26 Thread Ian
Hmm, I am going to suggest there is a bug - despite having the mp3
profile marked as 'active' it does not show up in the dropbox of formats
to choose from - only flac, ogg and wav do.

If I edit another profile to use the mp3 command line, it works... but
vanishes on next run of the program. Currently I have three profiles,
all marked as active, all trying to convert to mp3, and none of them
show up.

Something's more than 'a feature' here - it's actively not allowing me
to select any of them.

 sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse

I was told to use the bug reporting application, because the original

incomplete? So what do you need?

[Bug 306161] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2009-01-11 Thread Ian
It took a month to decide you needed a backtrace?

First, you tell me to use apport because it gives you all the
information you need, and then you say you don't have it all, and
require a backtrace now. So tell me how exactly can I generate a
backtrace because I don't know? Your first two contributions to this
bug was removing something and marking it incomplete without any comment
as to why it was incomplete. I don't call that very helpful in getting
the problem resolved. Only later do you comment saying you require a
backtrace?

Maybe get apport to do it, so that you have all the information in the
first place. I think I'll just live with the problem, seems it's too
much hassle to actually get it fixed in the first place.

2011-06-11 Thread Ian
Oh, I'd also argue with the labelling this as a 'low' importance bug: as
part of a dist-upgrade, this leaves you with a system that will not boot
into the 11.04 kernel!

Fortunately, you're left with the previous versions and can use that to
fix things (a symbolic link between where the pango directory is and
where the update-initramfs script expects it to be, typically).

[Bug 659595] Re: cannot run evolution full screen and have a hard time resizing

2010-10-13 Thread Ian
This is a very annoying problem.

Evolution cannot be resized horizontally, because the minimum width is
larger than the screen width (1024px minus the size of the new Unity
Sidebar).

If Evolution is then changed to full screen, the window frame and title
bar disappear, but the window is not resized, so you get confusing
graphics (instead of the title bar you see the topmost pixels of the
window behind, which is most likely a menu bar of another open
window...)

(BTW: The "Netbook-Window-Resizer" should try to resize vertically only
if hor/vert resizing fails).

Maybe a part of the problem is that the last column in Mail view (Date)
cannot be resized on the right side, so it is not possible to reduce the
size of the email view. Hence it is not possible to reduce the window
width at all.

It is possible to switch to fullscreen after the sidebar of evolution is
disabled, but then you cannot change mail folders.

[Bug 347860] [NEW] gnome-keyring failing with id_rsa

2009-03-24 Thread Ian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

I have an ssh key in /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa. Also currently tests fine
with Fedora. A replace to gnome-keyring_2.22.3-2_i386.deb fixes problem.
Also works fine with ssh-add and ssh-agent.

Problem:
First time I try and log into a remote server using ssh using 9.04, I get asked
for the password (passphrase). This is accepted (if I enter wrong one, it keeps
focus and asks to re-enter).

Then when it has accepted the correct passphrase, it proceeds to try and
login, but doesn't seem to use it. This I am doing via gnome-terminal
and a custom command (which is "ssh u...@host.net", I have several for
different hosts, using one key). On trying to login, it fails and asks
for a password, if it failed and used the ssh key so I could enter
passphrase at this point I'd be fine (so I'm guessing maybe its not
using keyring at all? This is actually better than a broken keyring for
me).

If I regress to gnome-keyring 2.22.3-2 this sort of works by asking for
passphrase each time (so guessing maybe its not using keyring, but is
using the correct key at least).

Will try and restore and grab copy of ssh -vvv as custom command.

[Bug 347860] Re: gnome-keyring failing with id_rsa

2009-03-24 Thread Ian
Have restored original keyring. This is ssh -vvv u...@host as custom
command.

I'm guessing using the old keyring may be a redherring as it may not
actually be using it? But gnome-terminal does use the correct ssh key
and logs in fine. (so could be a gnome-terminal issue or elsewhere?)

Happy to help isolate as very important. I can work around it for the
moment by using old version and logging in direct with passphrase.

2009-11-12 Thread Ian
Ah, thanks for finding what was causing this one (x64 9.10 upgraded from

If anyone needs hand-holding to find the setting, it's Totem aka Media

press 'reset to defaults'.

[Bug 245703] [NEW] CD ejects on first strating to play, then reports paused

2008-07-04 Thread Ian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Everything seemed fine after inserting audio CD (store bought). Within a
second or two of clicking on play the CD is ejected and player reports
it is paused. Ubuntu 8.04 fresh install with current updates. Rythmbox
0.11.5. Tried another CD and first song started playing. After several
seconds I click on next track, OK, then clicked next track and it
ejected. Once it said it could not access CD, but did on a retry. The cd
player is a Mitsumi FX4821T. This is the CDROM I installed Ubuntu with.

[Bug 118605] Re: [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch]

2008-07-05 Thread ian
I'm experiencing a similar problem, Intel E8400 and Asus 3850 video
card, fglrx driver.

The ati driver works fine, installing the fglrx driver causes a black
screen (and what looks like) a hard lock-up on logout, switch user, and
when X is started. This is on Kubuntu 8.04.1 with all updates applied.

[Bug 245703] Re: CD ejects on first strating to play, then reports paused

2008-07-07 Thread Ian
Lots of looking suggested that I gave up on this particular Mitsumi. Why
does it work with Windows XP? I tried my Lite-On DVD combo, but got an
intermittent audio cut-out problem. Finally tried a Hitachi CD-RW GCE-
8487B and that seems to work. Other than this CD/DVD hassle, I like
Ubuntu.

[Bug 118605] Re: [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch]

2008-07-13 Thread ian
My initial problem was a broken mtrr. I'm not sure if that's the fault
of Asus (motherboard), ATI, Intel or Linux... but fixing that lets me
get into X. Unfortunately I'm still having a problem (wait for it...)
with freezing on logout or user switch.

I added hardy-proposed (hardy-updates was already there) and installed
the envy drivers, still a hard lock on logout. Keyboard is blinking at
me as I type this on another machine.

I guess I should have done more research before buying the card, IE
actually checking out what state the radeonhd drivers were in. Or how
bad fglrx had gotten. It's more a little frustrating when I can barely
use the machine, let alone actually use the card for 3d.

[Bug 153060] temporary freezing of app approximately onee per minute

2007-10-15 Thread Ian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When the compose window is open I notice that the app freezes about once
per minute. it is completely non responsive and the cursor disappears,
but does not appear to be using excessive CPU at that time. It does not
coincide with checking mail. Keystrokes are added to the message once
the cursor returns. Freeze lasts about 5 seconds and is regular and
repeating.

Re: [Bug 153060] Re: temporary freezing of app approximately onee per minute

2007-10-21 Thread Ian
I will happily do that, but is there a point if the program doesn't
crash, but only freezes temporarily?

Sebastian,

Please accept my apologies. I upgraded to Gutsy and I can't get Evo to
freeze any longer. I ran a backtrace, but I don't think there's anything
of value in there for you.

[Bug 21989] Re: evolution uses wrong smtp server when replying to mail

2007-10-30 Thread Ian
I have a very similar problem. Account 1 uses SMTP 1, and account 2 SMTP
2. However whenever I want to reply from account 2 it uses SMTP 1, and
unsuccessfully. I have to remove the message from the queue. Changing
the default account in prefs changes the behavior so that SMTP 2 is
always used rather than SMTP 1.

[Bug 70473] Re: gaim crashes whithout clear reason/action

2006-11-06 Thread Ian
Similar issue here. When I close a chat window, occasionally the window
goes blank white with the exception of the title bar. Pressing X to get
rid of the window crashes gaim. This seems to happen more frequently
when I switch from a custom away message to "available" status.

[Bug 35217] Re: Unable to login when disk space is exhausted

2007-03-03 Thread Ian
I agree that this should be assigned a higher priority,

Why, yes, it did catch me last night :)

It's made worse by the behaviour of ext3 when full: you can delete files
using 'rm' or 'apt-get clear' *BUT* the free space doesn't increase?!?
(Because the journalling system couldn't write anything before making
the changes that would give it some space?)

A combination of reboot, oh no, delete some files, reboot, oh no, try
deleting via Windows and ext2fs, reboot, oh no, run fschk, delete some
files, reboot, oh no, run fschk etc worked. In the end.

But, basically, the behaviour when the file system fills up is Not Good.

I leave it to others to decide what the best solution is - stop the file
system getting in this state? Having a specific utility to get free
space (e.g. by emptying caches) in such a way that ext3 actually creates
some or just increasing the helpfullness of the onscreen messages.

About the only good bit is that, browsing the bug database, it looks
like KDE is even worse :/

[Bug 35217] Re: Unable to login when disk space is exhausted

2007-03-03 Thread Ian
Ah yes, my other comment about the current position is that it's
particularly annoying when you've (sensibly) put /home on a different
partition: by picking a different session, you can get a simple
graphical login working (albeit without menus) *BUT* there's no way to
change to root in order to delete files anywhere other than your /home
directory... and deleting files there will have no effect.

You can see what you need to do, but you're stopped from doing it...
argh.

Thanks to Sebastian for finding the upstream bug.

I think this issue should be dealt with upstream; we don't have the resources

[Bug 38300] [Dapper] Sound-juicer crashes after editing gconf keys

2006-04-05 Thread ian marcinkowski
Public bug reported:

Affects: sound-juicer (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
In order to obtain properly tagged/named files, I'm required to go into
gconf and manually edit the file-naming scheme that sound-juicer uses
(which is a bug in its self, IMO).

Since doing a fresh Dapper Flight 6 install last week, I havn't ripped
any CDs, until now.

After going editing the file_pattern and path_pattern keys, sound-juicer
now crashes when I try to access the preferences dialog even though I've
changed the gconf keys back to their default settings.

The following is generated by bug buddy:

file_pattern

Reading the middle section, I just remembered that I changed the vorbis quality
in the 'lossy' profile from 0.2 (or something) to 6. Perhaps that has
something to do with the crashing.

The segfault happens right when I try to access the prefs dialog.

[Bug 38754] [Dapper] ogg stream operations causes Rhythmbox to lock

2006-04-08 Thread ian marcinkowski
Public bug reported:

Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
There seem to be a couple causes for this.

1) Sometimes switching between two of the default ubuntu ogg streams
(http://ubuntu.hbr1.com:19800/trance.ogg or ambient.ogg) will cause
rhythmbox to crash. This happens seemingly random, but only after
playing a stream for a while. Using the pause/play button to turn the
stream off somtimes causes this.

2) When the end of the stream is reached, instead of either stopping
playback or reconnecting to the stream, rhythmbox crashes.

Reproducing this bug is a pain because the conditions seem random for #1
and you've got to wait for the ogg stream to end for #2, which only
happens every 30-90 minutes.

Here's somg GDB info:

[Bug 39024] [Dapper] Gedit fails to save to remote location if creating new file while using sftp

2006-04-10 Thread ian marcinkowski
Public bug reported:

Affects: gedit (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
When saving a new remote file over sftp, gedit gives the following
error:

Could not save the file sftp://path/to/remote.file
Unexpected error: Protocol Error

This initial save operation creates the file on the remote system but
doesn't save any data to the file.

All subsequent operations function as they should.

I don't know; I can't see anything relevant in the changelog but it's
quite possibly an upstream or Debian change.

This might be related to the problem with evolution. I'll look into
that first.

[Bug 57205] MimeType values in .desktop files are not regexps

2006-08-22 Thread Ian Jackson
Public bug reported:

DesktopEntry.py says:
def getMimeType(self):
return self.get('MimeType', list=True, type="regex")

However, the MimeType field is not a regexp according to eg
http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/0.9.5/ar01s07.html

Callers will have to have been expecting to treat the result like a
compiled re (eg, by calling .match). However, they are also entitled to
look inside and see re.pattern and some callers (eg, gnome-app-install)
know that there is this lack of quoting bug in pygtk

So there is no good answer to this. Perhaps it would be best to invent
a getMimeTypeStringList and deprecate the old method. There are some
cryptic comments in DesktopEntry.py relating to deprecation of MimeType.

To reproduce at least one of the symptoms:
 gnome-app-install --mime-type=text/vndXwapYwml
and observe that an XML editor is offered when in fact no application should be
found. Note that the fix should arrange that
 gnome-app-install
and then typing
 text/vnd.wap.wml
into the search box should still find the XML editor.

[Bug 42265] Re: Inconsistent icons in toolbar

2006-05-02 Thread Ian Jackson
Please see my comments in 8887. No work should be started on new icons until
we've had a proper discussion about it in ubuntu-devel and come to a conclusion
about the correct way forward.

Please do not discuss this decision in this bug report; bug reports are not a
good venue for these kind of discussions.

[Bug 39269] Re: Download progress bar misaligned on (de)select using default Human theme

2006-05-02 Thread Ian Jackson
Thanks for this report. This is almost certainly a problem in firefox
upstream, which is probably best addressed there. Nevertheless in this case I
will leave this bug report open in Malone in case anyone else has any further
comments or some effort to try to fix it.

Before anyone gets stuck into the code, it might be worth doing a search of the
upstream bugzilla for this problem.

whether there are still problems, and if so indicate which of the test
cases described here are still broken ? (Or failing that, attach a new

[Bug 20622] Re: Rhythmbox Segfault on reading rhythmdb.xml file

2006-05-06 Thread Ian Davey
It has certainly been fixed somewhere along the line, I've even tried to
recreate it in a clean 5.10 running in a virtual machine, but no luck.
Either it was something to do with my music library at the time, or an
update in some other library fixed it. Rhythmbox has been rock solid for
me for a long time now, and I have it open all the time.

I don't know exactly what's going on here but I think the bug here is
that this accessibility feature is misdesigned and the X events it
result in cause firefox to think it has lost mouse or keyboard focus.

Right, thanks. I take it that you mean you used `ln' (and perhaps
