Bug#439276: idesk: X11/Xorg testing crash with intel driver 865G hardware.

2007-08-26 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi Bill,

Please describe exactly what's happening here, when doing what, how, ...

Is this bug a freeze of the machine or just a crash of the X server? If
it is a crash, we need a backtrace to debug the problem. There should be
one at the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log (or Xorg.0.log.old if X already
restarted). A better backtrace may be obtained by attaching gdb through
ssh from another machine (with 'gdb -p $(pidof X)') and entering 'bt
full' after the crash.

Also please send the whole output of /usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg/script
3>&1 so that we see your whole config and log.

Brice

I'd be happy to commit this somewhere but I indeed have no idea of
what branch I should checkout for the xorg-server package.

Bug#439645: compiz: Compiz lets windows sometimes slip over the top panel even with "place" extension

2007-08-26 Thread Ralph Aichinger

Package: compiz
Version: 0.5.2-1
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

When using metacity, the top panel in Gnome (Applications menu etc.) is
sacred. Never ever will anything move on top of it. In Compiz this
works only 95% of the time, even with the "place" plugin installed.

To reproduce:

1) Move a window up towards the top panel, where it will
stop, so that it is sitting next to the top panel. Release
the mouse button.

2) Try to push the window further up, by clicking on the window
title *while moving the cursor up*. Important: Only works if
the cursor is already in motion while you click.

3) See the window block the top panel, or disapear somewhere on
top where it cannot be grabbed again.

Screenshot:
http://www.pangea.at/%7eralph/compiz-over-toppanel.png

You might say "so don't do that", but as a matter of fact,
I do that unintentionally three or four times per day on average,
and very often resort to xkill or Ctrl-v to get rid of the
window. I really think this is a bug that should be killed ; )
Compiz really is a good replacement for metacity for me, if
it were not for that bug.

TIA
/ralph

Bug#439540: xterm locks up when I run who -a

Going back to the first screen, I see part of the problem, from the example for
rxvt. The 0x9d is the beginning of one of the control sequences that xterm
recognizes (translating the codes to ASCII):

 id=:\xC3\x94\xC2\x80\xC2\x9D

(looking at ctlseqs.txt):

ESC ]
Operating System Command (OSC is 0x9d)
 ...

Operating System Controls
OSC Ps ; Pt ST
OSC Ps ; Pt BEL
 ...

That's one of the vt220 sequences - but is also for instance used to set the
title. rxvt handles some of those, and is probably giving up on the newline
(which is technically incorrect: the ANSI/ISO standards say that you can
sprinkle control characters on a control sequence and they'll be processed
without interrupting the control sequence). But that would explain the
difference.

The question is really, where does the sequence come from. It looks as if it
is supposed to be UTF-8. If xterm is running in UTF-8 mode, it will display
that as something printable (a big "O" with a "^" hat, followed by "[EMAIL
PROTECTED]").

You can unfreeze xterm by pressing control/G and a newline.

Right now, debian-experimental would be the right branch. I'm pretty sure
we're done with debian-unstable until after the 7.3 release.

Ah, well, Julien gave me the opposite advice and I committed to
debian-unstable, I'm afraid.

Actually, when it comes to debconf l10n, I'd prefer not having to jump
from one branch to another. If that's needed, it would be preferrable,
then, that someone else does the commits (Julien can, I just want to
save as much developer's valuable time as possible by doing all these
nasty little l10n thingies myself, indeed..:-)..

Ok that's fine. It doesn't really matter, since it's easy to merge things
back.

So don't do that :)

I don't understand why you need to kill the window. If you can't grab it
with the mouse, doesn't its "window" menu work? It looks like the
default shortcut in compiz to open this menu is alt-space (or alt +
right-click).

Did you try various options in the place plugin?

Bug#437321: incompatible with kernel >=2.6.22 (Radeon Xpress 200M)

2007-08-26 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi Zack,

The upstream dev does not see why you get this problem, there might
be something strange in your board. You could try changing the driver
to use your chipset as a non-mobility board. To do so, get the sources,
open radeon_driver.c, look for "case PCI_CHIP_RC410_5A62" in function
RADEONPreInitChipType() and comment out the line
  info->IsMobility = TRUE
right after it.

You can do that either in the debian package source (let me know if
you need help to get/build it) or directly in the upstream git tree
(there's a how-to at http://bgoglin.livejournal.com/10936.html).

Bug#438553: two more debunked theories

2007-08-26 Thread jidanni
Another discovery: the ugly part of the bottom bar must be related to
the hostname: draw a vertical line on your screen just after the final
"o" in "Welcome to". It starts just to the right of that line.

Certainly in the source code, the "Welcome to" is not concatenated to
the hostname, but displayed earlier separately, one can thus tell.

And maybe as my hostname is "jidanni2", the j dipping downwards,
perhaps causing that whole chunk to be sent downwards a bit.

OK, I just changed my hostname to "nni", and rebooted. The only
difference was now the chunk started after the "e" in Welcome,
debunking the above theories.

Priority: important

On Debian sid with the latest Compiz and X installed, running compiz
--replace with an active Gnome/Metacity session results in there being no
window borders. Compiz effects (cube, window effects, alt+tab, etc) all
work, but none of my windows have window borders. I even tried
unregistering the /apps/compiz settings in gconf, but it still doesn't work
- hence Compiz is basically unusable.

I'm using a MacBook with Intel GMA 950 graphics and the X.org "intel"
driver. No such problems were experienced with Compiz with the same system
in Etch.

--- Begin Message ---
Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.5.8.0-1
Severity: important

I'm using Xinerama to put the CRT output and the external VGA output on
top of each other, i.e. to enable the external VGA, on a standard iBook
machine running Debian.
One of the screens has framebuffer enabled, the other one doesn't.

This setup worked very well for XFree86. However, since the switch to
Xorg, the display freezes when starting up X, even though the external
VGA gets a signal before successfully (so it blanks, while it normally
shows a white area in console mode).

Furthermore, trying to debug this with a remote connection, I couldn't
connect via SSH anymore, which most certainly means that the kernel has
locked up as well. (Switching to console via Ctrl+Alt+Fx didn't work
either, logically.)

Since it's been a while that I've gone the upgrade path, I'm not sure
anymore if and to what I extent I used the DRI-branch of XFree86 before.
AFAIK all of its changes should have been merged into the stock
XFree86/Xorg by now.

My config file is attached (still having lots of xf86 cruft in it,
sorry). If there's another way right now to enable the VGA output,
please document this somewhere. But in any case, it shouldn't crash X,
and even less the kernel.
