Another discovery: the ugly part of the bottom bar must be related to the hostname: draw a vertical line on your screen just after the final "o" in "Welcome to". It starts just to the right of that line.
Certainly in the source code, the "Welcome to" is not concatenated to the hostname, but displayed earlier separately, one can thus tell. And maybe as my hostname is "jidanni2", the j dipping downwards, perhaps causing that whole chunk to be sent downwards a bit. OK, I just changed my hostname to "nni", and rebooted.
