Oh.  Duh.  :)

Glad to hear of the workaround.

Sounds like they think it's a bad idea. That changing MAXCLIENTS
"breaks module compatibility" is a bit of a concern.

Err, the "kludge" was simply making xlibs-dev from 4.2.1 available to
the buildds and hiding the arch:all 4.3.0 version. I can't conceive
how that would cause any problems - never mind something like this.

I haven't looked at the log, but I suspect this is probably just more
fallout from the hanging postrm bug that's in -2[1].

--
James

[1] As I explained on IRC: sbuild installs new X library packages,
builds package, tries to remove them, postrm hangs due to missing
argument to grep, sbuild times out and kills the dpkg process,
dpkg gets confused and thinks the library package it was in the
process of removing is still "installed but with no files"... next
package that tries to use that library fails (often in bizarre
ways) because the library's not actually there.

Bug#234496: xserver-xfree86: xserver freeze all input devices randomely

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-2
Severity: important

I have a radeon card. But this bug seams to be in other driver.

The system freeze the mouse and the keyboard (together) randomely. All
other like opening windows (remotely) or the normal displayfunktionality
works on. I only have no control over it. I can also not switch to a
console so I have to login from remote and kill the xserver with loosing
all open windows.

Okay, I think I see the problem. The Radeon sub-module is probing your
monitor, and throwing away the monitor configuration data you have
specified.  Not good.

Also not the first report I've seen of this.

I've extracted what I think are the relevant parts of your XFree86 X
server log file below.

[ debian-x:

Uh, Michel, can you help out here? It's pretty awful to have the driver
throw away the monitor sync range config in favor of 28-33 kHz and 43-72
Hz. ]

This seems a hasty conclusion to reach if you're not very familiar with the
driver code and the video hardware.

Perhaps you could review the changes made to the tdfx driver between
XFree86 4.2.1 and 4.3.0 (the tdfx driver has not, to date, been changed
on xf-4_3-branch).

It looks to me like the error message you're complaining of was not
added in 4.3.0.

Justification: renders package unusable

I have a 2.4.24 kernel + swsusp2.0 + acpi + cpufreq
on a Compaq evo N1015v with AMD 2000+ and Ati IGP 320M graphic adapter.
Xvideo extensions (2D acceleration) work perfectly but
if I perform a suspend/resume cycle, they do not work anymore
and if I try for example to watch a movie I get only vertical multicolor
bands...

This bug has already been filed five times.

[The following is a form letter.]

Hello,

You recently filed a duplicate bug report against a Debian package; that
is, the problem had already been reported.

While there is often nothing inherently wrong with doing so, the filing of
duplicate reports can cause Debian package maintainers to spend time
performing triage and maintenance operations on bug reports (e.g.,
instructing the Debian Bug Tracking System to merge the duplicates) that
could otherwise be spent resolving problems and doing other work on the
package.

One very good way to file bugs with the Debian Bug Tracking System is to
use the "reportbug" package and command of the same name. A very nice
feature of reportbug is that, if the machine where you run it has network
access to the World Wide Web, it can query the Debian Bug Tracking System
and show you existing reports. This reduces the chance that you'll file a
duplicate report, and offers you the option of adding follow-up information
to an existing bug report. This is especially valuable if you have unique
information to add to an existing report, because this way information
relevant to the problem is gathered together in one place as opposed to
being scattered among multiple, duplicate bug reports where some facts may
be overlooked by the package maintainers. The reportbug program also does
a lot of automatic information-gathering that helps package maintainers to
understand your system configuration, and also ensures that your message to
the Debian Bug Tracking System is well-formed so that it is processed
correctly by the automated tools that manage the reports. (If you've ever
gotten a "bounce" message from the Debian Bug Tracking System that tells
you your message couldn't be processed, you might appreciate this latter
feature.)

Therefore, I strongly urge you to give "reportbug" a try as your primary
bug reporting tool for the Debian System.

One way to install reportbug is with "apt-get"; for
example:

  # apt-get install reportbug

The "reportbug" command has a few different modes that cater to different
levels of user expertise. If this message has contained a lot of jargon
that is unfamiliar to you, you likely want to use reportbug's "novice"
mode; here's one way to do that.

  $ reportbug --mode=novice
  Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem,
  or type 'other' to report a more general problem.
  >

If you're more sophisticated, or if you are not using the released version
of Debian ("stable"), but instead Debian "testing" or "unstable", you
should use reportbug's standard mode.

  $ reportbug
  Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem,
  or type 'other' to report a more general problem.
  >

The reportbug command is extensively documented in its usage message and
manual page. Commands to view these pieces of documentation are:

  $ reportbug --help | more
  $ man reportbug

(The output of the above commands has been omitted from this message.)

Thanks for using the Debian system!

Okay. I'm going to apply this patch, but because the elfloader object
isn't even in the debugging server (because the modules are linked
directly into the huge XFree86-debug object), this isn't the real
problem you're seeing.

It may be necessary to attach gdb to the XFree86-debug server from a
remote terminal to locate the source of the problem.

Unless you can ulimit -c unlimited and get a good backtrace off the core
from XFree86-debug?

Does your card have an S-Video connector? I had the same problem with my
Radeon 7500 (plain, without AIW) with 4.2.* and 4.3pre* if I had booted
with the S-Video cable plugged into the card, but not in the TV, so I guess
that's an upstream/hardware related problem. The XFree bug tracking system
doesn't list this bug, though.

Actually, I tried to start Xfree with the S-Video cable unplugged from
the PC and... it works ! With the previous version of XFree, there was
no problem if the TV was plugged but now there is. So, maybe it is
possible to do something to avoid this in the code ?

Anyway, thanks a lot for your help.

Given that it kills the kernel, both methods don't seem very viable...
the best I could try is redirect the log to the networks somehow and
see what occurs last. Do you have any recommendation how to do so? In
case the console output of the X process contains everything
/var/log/XFree.log contains, I could just use ssh.

No need to be rude! Our advice was to install netscape to /usr/local/
if you need to use it. There is no need to keep obsolete xlib6g in

Sorry, I searched only xserver-xfree86 bugs, as my previous bug on dri

Bug#234530: setxkbmap -layout "us,lt" assigns Alt_R to modifiers Mod1 and Mod5

2004-02-24 Thread Mpiktas

Package: xbase-clients
Version:  4.3.0-2

If you put in XF86Config4

XkbOption "XkbLayout" "us,lt"

or change the keyboard layout directly with

setxkbmap -layout "us,lt" -option "grp:ctrl_shift_toggle"

xmodmap -pm prints

shift   Shift_L (0x32),  Shift_R (0x3e)
lockCaps_Lock (0x42)
control Control_L (0x25),  Control_R (0x6d)
mod1Alt_L (0x40),  Alt_R (0x71)
mod2Num_Lock (0x4d)
mod3
mod4Super_L (0x73),  Super_R (0x74)
mod5Alt_R (0x71)

Thus Alt_R is modifier mod1 and mod5. Such situation renders xemacs21 pretty
unusuable. When pressing Alt it the issues warning

(1) (key-mapping/warning) XEmacs:  Alt_R (0x71) generates both Mod1 and Mod5,
which is nonsensical.

so you practically can't use any meta key shortcuts in xemacs21 and that means
that you can't practicaly use xemacs.

With such configuration setxkbmap -print produces

xkb_keymap {
   xkb_keycodes  { include "xfree86+aliases(qwerty)"   };
   xkb_types { include "complete"  };
   xkb_compat{ include "complete"  };
   xkb_symbols   { include "pc/pc(pc105)+pc/us+pc/lt:2+group
(ctrl_shift_toggle)"   };

   xkb_geometry  { include "pc(pc105)" };
};

Looking at the file /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc you can find lines

default
xkb_symbols "pc104" {
   include "pc/pc(basic)"
   key  {   [   Alt_L,  Meta_L  ]   };
   key  {   [   Alt_R,  Meta_R  ]   };
   key  {   [   Super_L ]   };
   key  {   [   Super_R ]   };
   key  {   [   Menu]   };

   // modifier mappings
   modifier_map Mod1   { Alt_L, Alt_R, Meta_L, Meta_R };
   modifier_map Mod4   { Super_L, Super_R };
};

xkb_symbols "pc105" {
   include "pc/pc(pc104)"
   key  { type[Group1] = "FOUR_LEVEL",
[  less,greater,  bar,brokenbar ]   };
};

In the file /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/lt there are lines

<...skipped>
partial default alphanumeric_keys modifier_keys
xkb_symbols "basic" {

<...skipped>
  key   { type[Group1]="TWO_LEVEL",
 [ ISO_Level3_Shift, Multi_key ]   };
   modifier_map Mod5   {  };
};
<...skipped>

Thus key RALT or Alt_R in lt layout is assigned to modifier Mod5 and thus the
confusion is created.

I am pointing out the problem with lt layout, yet this problem may occur using
other layouts.

Solutions to the problem:

1. Use setxkbmap -layout "lt,us" (us and lt interchanged places, this fixes
the problem)

2. Comment lines

key   { type[Group1]="TWO_LEVEL",
 [ ISO_Level3_Shift, Multi_key ]   };
modifier_map Mod5   {  };
3. Use setxkbmap -layout "lt(lt_us),lt".

in file /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/lt since in the basic lt keyboard variant no
third level letters are used.

I use up to date Debian Sid with kernel 2.4.22

Well, what can I tell you...

There are people who have a keyboard with US layout, but need to type
non-ascii latin characters. For example, Germans living in the US will
likely have an US keyboard, but they still need to write umlauts when
they write in German. Or people living in countries where keyboards
are imported... sometimes keyboard availability depends on
internacional prices, and there are times when you can only get an
US keyboard, other times only an es-ES keyboard, and others only the
ill-designed es-LA one.

Anyway, these people use an US keyboard and need to input diacritics.
The standard, intuitive and historical way is to use the keys labeled
with symbols resembling the diacritics to input them. Thus, pressing
the apostrophe key produces a , the quote a
, the circumflex a , etc. The next
pressed key will result in an appropiately diacriticalised(?) letter.

So far, so good. But how to input the apostrophe, quotedbl, and
asciicircum? The historical way was to press the key followed by a
space. This is was they broke with the new en_US.UTF-8/Compose.

Why   should produce :

1. Ability to produce quotedbl. When these people decided to "improve"
   the rules file, they took out the iso9995-3 symbols from the layout
   "pc*", variant "us_intl". So, people using UTF-8 locale, and using
   that layout/variant combination can no longer type a quotedbl
   (us_intl maps the quote key to dead_diaeresis).

2. Historical/backwards compatibility. Compatiblity with *me*, the
   dead_diaeresis user. I'm used to type a quote that way. I'm so used
   to it that I always type '" ' when I use a pure US keyboard layout,
   and need to backspace. It's frustrating to have one's keyboard
   change its behaviour according to the academic theories of the last
   XKB commiter.

3. Compatibility with other "pseudo-diacritical" keys. I'm afraid of
   saying that, should they inutilise their composing sequences too...
: apostrophe,  : asciitilde,
: grave.

4. It doesn't make sense. Maybe these people thought: "We were doing
   it wrong all the time! + space should produce a
   diacriticalised(?) space! That's the logical thing to do!" Well,
   there is no such thing as SPACE WITH DIAERESIS, and that key
   combination only produces a DIAERESIS. Ok, their reasoning is not
   too far-fetched, but there's already a way to produce a lone
   diacritic: pressing the key two times; and see next item.

5. WHY WOULD ANYBODY WANT TO PRODUCE A DIAERESIS? I can only think of
   one context: when you are talking about diaeresises. Like: "The
   diaeresis (¨) ...", or "  produces '¨'!".
   The ratio of usage of quotedbl vs. diaeresis, I think, must be
   infinity to one. Even if you have a keyboard with both a quotedbl
   and a diaeresis key, if you press , the
   most likely thing is that you want a quotedbl. I think Windows
   applies the same line of reasoning that the XKB people, because
   many times I have seen mails in which the sender quoted ¨like this¨
   or ´like this´. They are obviously searching for the quote or
   apostrophe keys, and settle for the nearest similar-looking one. Of
   course they don't want the diacriticals but the quotes, because ...
   (see beginning of paragraph).

As an addition, I think the compose sequences should be consistent
across locales, but maybe I'm mistaken. And, in any case, I think the
"consistency trend" should be in the opposite direction (there are
already 9 locales with the wrong composing sequence (en_US.UTF-8 is
modified by me)).

  $ grep "^ " */Compose | expand -t1
  el_GR.UTF-8/Compose:  : "¨"  U00a8
  el_GR.UTF-8/Compose:   : "¨" diaeresis
  en_US.UTF-8/Compose:   : "\"" quotedbl
  iso8859-15/Compose:   : "\"" quotedbl
  iso8859-1/Compose:   : "\"" quotedbl
  iso8859-2/Compose:   : "\250" diaeresis
  iso8859-3/Compose:   : "\250" diaeresis
  iso8859-7/Compose:   : "\250" diaeresis
  iso8859-7/Compose:   : "\250" diaeresis
  iso8859-9/Compose:   : "\250" diaeresis
  iso8859-9e/Compose:   : "\250" diaeresis
  pt_BR.UTF-8/Compose:   : "\"" quotedbl

But I won't protest for a locale I don't use. en_US.UTF-8 is the
important for me.

I hope these notes were helpful to you.

Bye.

Bug#234535: xserver dies if I start gimp with LANG=no_NO.UTF-8

2004-02-24 Thread Helge Hafting

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.2.1-12.1
Severity: important

I've tried to use UTF-8 recently. If I run localeconf,
then utf-8 locales are the only ones available.

But having LANG=no_NO.UTF-8 makes X crash when I run gimp
and quite a few other apps too.

It doen't matter what locale the xserver runs under, it
is the locale setting for gimp that cause the crash.
So "export LANG=no_NO.UTF-8 ; gimp" will kill X,
no matter wheter the X server runs with LANG=no_NO or
LANG=no_NO.UTF-8.

My only guess is that gimp tries to render some odd
strings/characters when using UTF-8.  This shouldn't

kill the x server though. I first saw this with the
experimental xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk, but the same
happens with the standard xserver in "testing".

This happens with several different hw drivers,
both radeon, matrox, and unaccelerated framebuffer.

I have also reported this bug against "locales", because
I don't know wheter it is a "locales" bug or a
"xserver-xfree86" bug.

I'm running both xfs and xfstt.

I used important severity because the effect is quite bad,
still the package isn't completely unuseable. "rxvt"
seems to work fine without taking down X.

The easy workaround is to use LANG=no_NO (without
the UTF-8 part) Nothing crashes in that case, but I'd like
to use UTF-8

I can do some further testing (if directed), and also provide an account
for further investigation.

Bug#234531: lintian: Check for (build-)dep on xlibs(-dev)

2004-02-24 Thread Jeroen van Wolffelaar
Package: lintian
Version: 1.22.11
Severity: wishlist

A check should be made for (build-)dependencies on xlibs and xlibs-dev,
because they are transitional meta packages including all X libraries,
while they are now properly split up.

Fixing dependencies will make it possible to not need to install all
those X libs.

At the same time, lintian should also check for maintainers adding ALL
xlibs(-dev) dependencies, as this is very likely incorrect.

Reminder to self: Don't forget to exclude xlibs(-dev) itself from this
check...

Bug#234556: xlibs random crashes with an ATI Rage Mobility

I found another debian bug which seems to be related to mine:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2004/debian-x-200401/msg00656.html

In matter of fact I have a transmeta Crusoe in my laptop. But, I'm
really in doubt that the on-the-fly optimizer can produce bad code that
get stuck in the memory.

It seems that the error occur at boot time.

I really would like to dig more this problem. If anybody can help me
out, I would be really pleased.

As I have pointed out in the other bug, the code which generates this
error is nowhere near the graphics chip, so this is unlikely. The only
striking coincidence between all people seeing the problem so far has
been that they're all running Transmeta CPUs. Is that the case for you
as well?

Correct on both counts AFAIK, I think you should get in touch with Sven
about it. In fact, I wonder why he hasn't followed up to this, I guess
it doesn't help that you don't really seem to value his work...

Bug#234556: xlibs random crashes with an ATI Rage Mobility

Yes sure.

In my very specific case, I noticed this bug because at boot time the
desktop refuse to run.

In fact, I have installed GDM and I am opening the X server directly on
my account in graphical mode (I know it's bad). So, at boot time the
sequence should be: X server --> GDM --> Desktop (Gnome2)

But, this bug (when it occurs) seems to stop the process always at the
exact same point which is when starting the Desktop (gnome-panel and so
on). At this point, the mouse pointer is still active and the X server
as well (I can only move the mouse, not really useful indeed).

If I stop the X server and try to restart, I can't. I get the exact same
error than for the gnome-panel but for the X server (I guess, I have to
investigate this a little bit more now that I better know what is going
on).

My point is that it seems to be extremely consistant when it occurs. So,
I think that there is some determinism inside this bug since it started.
The theory of the "wrong code" being remanent in the processor does not
really satisfy me because we have no real evidence of it (how could we
dump the registers of the processor or the cache memory ?).

The problem is that I do not exactly understand everything and I have to
investigate a lot before reporting.

I'll try to do some investigations and I'll probably come back with a
summary of my though. I guess that I have to add this to the follow-up
to the bug #216933 as it was the first.

It seems to be a very interesting bug. And, actually it crash my X about
one time out of three boots, so I would be very happy to get rid of it.

Regards

Bugs in the XFree86 X server should be filed against xserver-xfree86.

Bugs in the Mesa DRI drivers should be filed against xlibmesa-dri.

Because you saw no errors from the XFree86 X server log, but knew that
3D acceleration wasn't working, a bug in the Mesa DRI drivers would have
been a reasonable guess.

I hope this helps!

So, it's your contention that the new UTF-8 Compose maps break
conformance with ISO 9995-3?

Thanks.

Please send you /var/log/XFree86.0.log file so we can see if there were
any errors from the X server while attempting to compile your keyboard
definition.

Also, have you modified any of the XKB conffiles in /etc/X11/xkb?

It doesn't have "such protocols". It has "raw" - as in, pass the data
through raw.

This could be useful for esoteric protocols, I suppose, and it's easy
enough to implement in gpm ... but i do have to wonder if having that
option (so often abused) does more harm than good.

Bug#234335: Problem on german layout fixed

2004-02-24 Thread Robert Szerwinski
Hi,
the described problem appears on the german keyboard layout, too.
Changing XkbModel from "pc104" to "pc105" fixed this for me.

I wonder if it's related to these errors about /dev/input/event0?

Falk and I discussed this on IRC. I suggested he pass "-verbose 3" to
the X server so that everything that would go to the log file goes to
stdout as well. That may identify the module that causes the problem,
and an appropriate breakpoint can be set within one of that module's
functions to trace the server (remotely) until it dies.

The requirements for cursor themes to work are:

  * libx11-6 >= 4.3.0-1
  * libxcursor1
  * running X server >= 4.3.0

Do you meet all of these?

I just apt-get upgrade'd to 4.3.0-2 from 4.2. Now my X11 server is
coming up in a ridiculously low resolution. It's either 640x480 or
320x240 when the LCD display can do 1400x1050.

By looking at /var/log/XFree86.0.log, it appears that it is ignoring
my HorizSync and VertRefresh from my XF86Config-4 file.

The X server itself can't encounter this error, probably the display
manager does.

It doesn't seem even as deterministic as that for others... doesn't the
problem go away for you if you 'do something else' for a while?

It's the only theory I've seen so far which could explain the
semi-deterministic nature of the problem.

Yes, unfortunately the BTS doesn't seem to forward comments to both bugs

  $ reportbug --mode=novice
  Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem,
  or type 'other' to report a more general problem.
  >

If you're more sophisticated, or if you are not using the released version
of Debian ("stable"), but instead Debian "testing" or "unstable", you
should use reportbug's standard mode.

  $ reportbug
  Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem,
  or type 'other' to report a more general problem.
  >

The reportbug command is extensively documented in its usage message and
manual page. Commands to view these pieces of documentation are:

  $ reportbug --help | more
  $ man reportbug

(The output of the above commands has been omitted from this message.)

Thanks for using the Debian system!

You are right, that was the problem. The keyboard model was pc104. How this
configuration file worked for the 4.2 version is a mistery for me.

kxconfig is a useful tool for checking and solving on realtime this kind of
errors but maybe some information should be droped for unexperienced users.
Some other Spanish users at my workplace had the same problem when updating
to 4.3. First with experimental packages and now in sid.

Bug#234066: xserver-xfree86: XF86Config-4 file not being used correctly

2004-02-24 Thread Luke Schierer
Um, i really really don't like this as you merged it into a closed bug,
and my problem isn't fixed at all. that bug got fixed by changing to use
clone lines, but would that apply to me, with my single monitor system?
