I'm reasonably sure that this document is shipped these days, maybe in
xlibmesa3-gl or such; either way, what about the URL?

I'd confirm this one way or another, but I can't hit SVN normally, and the web
interface needs updating for 0.26.

 README.DRI is not DFSG free, it is dropped from debian xfree86

 How about to use `/var/log/fs' ?

 1) xfs write Error log to

LOGDIRECTORY = /var/log
FSERRORS = $(LOGDIRECTORY)/xfs.log
(from xc/programs/xfs/Imakefile)

But xfs will run in non-root privillage, /var/log/xfs.log
   can not write (if the file does not exists owned by xfntserv
   before running xfs) because /var/log is owned by root.root.

I think it is one of the solution to use /var/log/fs/xfs.log
   for it. /var/log/fs directory will own by xfntserv.

 2) xfs-xtt write Error log to

LOGDIRECTORY = /var/log
FSERRORS = $(LOGDIRECTORY)/xfs-xtt/xfs-xtt.log
(from xc/programs/xfs/Imakefile)

It is easy to move to /var/log/fs/xfs-xtt.log

 3) Currently xfstt does not write any log (I believe).
So it will not use /var/log/fs

Bug#203509: x-no-session-manager

2003-07-30 Thread Ognyan Kulev
Package: xfree86-common
Version: 4.2.1-9
Severity: wishlist
Hi,

As you know, when you have GNOME installed, you will always get
x-session-manager started before any x-window-manager (by default).
Sometimes you don't want that behaviour.

I propose creating x-no-session-manager that is symbolic link to
x-window-manager. This way user has choice for pure window manager when
something like GNOME is installed.

Regards

I'm nervous about:

1) creating a subdirectory of /var/log, though if apache and boa can do
   it, I suppose we can;
2) calling it "fs", given the multiple meanings of this abbreviation.

Maybe /var/log/fontservers?

Yup.

Okay.

Thanks for your suggestion! Except for calling the directory "fs", I
find myself in agreement.

No, it isn't shipped, because it's non-free.  See debian/copyright.

No, ViewCVS is busted on general principle. A purportedly known good
patch is floating around but the package maintainer hasn't updated his
"bleeding edge" snapshot package.

+To-Do List for XFree86 4.3.0 Release to Debian Unstable
+---
+
+1) ensure full synchronicity and up-to-dateness of branches/4.3.0/sid with
+   respect to the trunk;
+2) ensure packages are at least as functional on the architectures in
+ unstable as the 4.2.1 packages are (so that no arch sees a horrendous
+   regression);
+3) split xlibs* and xbase-clients (one package per shared library;
+ xbase-clients should be broken into functional groups probably mostly
+ determined by library dependencies; xauth, the Athena clients, and
+ libGL-linked clients are all good candidates for splitting)
+4) respect Joey Hess; use debconf as intended (no "manage $foo with
+ debconf") questions; move xserver-xfree86 debconfage into an auxiliary
+ utility if necessary (the return of dexter, perhaps as a front end to
+ dexconf?); make dexconf use ucf to merge updates instead of rewriting
+ XF86Config* from scratch every time
+5) find a way to stop the dpkg conffile prompting madness when moving
+ conffiles from xlibs to xlibs-data!

The above message has absolutely nothing to do with the following one.

Nope. You might not have enough video RAM for all the buffers required
by DRI. Try a bit depth of 16 (or 15, can't remember which the Voodoo3
needs), and/or a lower resolution.

Bug#203546: X crash with OpenOffice 1.1-rc2

2003-07-30 Thread Klaus Pieper
Package:xserver-xfree86
Version:4.1.0-16

X crashes when I hit Insert, Special Character in OpenOffice 1.1-rc2, binary
download from OpenOffice.org.

The OOo people claim that it's not a bug in OOo since X is supposed to be
bullet proof and it must be an issue of X. They seem to be right since it
works with X 4.3 (Daniel Stone).

Graphics Card is Matrox G550 with mgadrivers-2.1 from Matrox installed.

I purged kdm and installed xdm and now e.g. cron mails me as above, so
somewhere in the process this wasn't looked after.

  update-alternatives --display x-window-manager
x-window-manager - status is auto.
 link currently points to /usr/bin/sawfish

Bug#203576: xserver-common: Signal 11 during heavy swapin during shutdown of heavy swapout Mozilla multiversion processes

2003-07-30 Thread Bradley W. Allen
Package: xserver-common
Version: 4.1.0-16
Severity: important

Strange signal 11 (in XFree86 v4.1.0.1 vender release 6510)

I was trying to get rid of an unnecessary Java process running with
Mozilla, so I did:

  killall java_vm

Unfortunately, Mozilla was stupid and decided to freak out and give
up, even though it had no use for Java at that point, taking away
about 30 pages I was looking at all managed by one process (SPOF)
instead of cloning exlusive processes which shared resources, and as a
result, started trying to free 100s of megabytes of bloated memory
use, most in swap. This was after I was trying to load a Java program
in a more recent and less trustable Mozilla program in order to look
at some USGS data.

I then tried to look at the version number of the more recent Mozilla
(trying to find the button for the "pull-down-menu" with "About" in
it, probably during the lengthy shutdown of the older Mozilla version
resources. Before I could even see what place to press with a button
for that, I then received the following error in X:

 OK, I'm agree. Let's use /var/log/fontservers for xfntserv's home

There's no need to launch a pre-emptive strike on this issue. In my
5 years of experience maintaining XFree86 packages for Debian, most
segfaults that affect its executables are due to coding errors.

I'm reasonably sure that this document is shipped these days, maybe in
xlibmesa3-gl or such; either way, what about the URL?

I'd confirm this one way or another, but I can't hit SVN normally, and the web
interface needs updating for 0.26.

Already fixed in branches/4.3.0/sid AFAICS.

 README.DRI is not DFSG free, it is dropped from debian xfree86

 How about to use `/var/log/fs' ?

 1) xfs write Error log to

LOGDIRECTORY = /var/log
FSERRORS = $(LOGDIRECTORY)/xfs.log

LOGDIRECTORY = /var/log
FSERRORS = $(LOGDIRECTORY)/xfs-xtt/xfs-xtt.log
(from xc/programs/xfs/Imakefile)

It is easy to move to /var/log/fs/xfs-xtt.log

 3) Currently xfstt does not write any log (I believe).
So it will not use /var/log/fs

Bug#203509: x-no-session-manager

2003-07-30 Thread Ognyan Kulev

Package: xfree86-common
Version: 4.2.1-9
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

As you know, when you have GNOME installed, you will always get
x-session-manager started before any x-window-manager (by default).
Sometimes you don't want that behaviour.

I propose creating x-no-session-manager that is symbolic link to
x-window-manager. This way user has choice for pure window manager when
something like GNOME is installed.

I'm nervous about:

1) creating a subdirectory of /var/log, though if apache and boa can do
   it, I suppose we can;
2) calling it "fs", given the multiple meanings of this abbreviation.

Maybe /var/log/fontservers?

Sounds good.

Yup.

Nope. You might not have enough video RAM for all the buffers required
by DRI. Try a bit depth of 16 (or 15, can't remember which the Voodoo3
needs), and/or a lower resolution.

Bug#203546: X crash with OpenOffice 1.1-rc2

2003-07-30 Thread Klaus Pieper
Package:xserver-xfree86
Version:4.1.0-16

X crashes when I hit Insert, Special Character in OpenOffice 1.1-rc2, binary
download from OpenOffice.org.

The OOo people claim that it's not a bug in OOo since X is supposed to be
bullet proof and it must be an issue of X. They seem to be right since it
works with X 4.3 (Daniel Stone).

Graphics Card is Matrox G550 with mgadrivers-2.1 from Matrox installed.

Package: xdm

I purged kdm and installed xdm and now e.g. cron mails me as above, so
somewhere in the process this wasn't looked after.

x-window-manager - status is auto.
 link currently points to /usr/bin/sawfish

Current `best' version is /usr/bin/sawfish.

I will change it to icewm.
