I did this, now there comes no error message anymore -- but the problem
still exists: the server fails while starting with the error message:
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

Is there any possibility to define a default font explicitely.

If yes, where and how can I define this?

Thanks,

Lukas
Btw: I am running a 2.4.3 kernel -- without any noticeable problems
(except a bus master problem of the 3c59x-driver when running in 100Mbps
mode '-)

Okay, now down to the desperate nitty-gritty. Please check your fonts.alias
file in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc for the "fixed" alias. Then check
that the expansion (e.g.
-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso8859-1) exists in
fonts.dir. Then check that the file it refers to (e.g. 6x13-ISO8859-1.pcf.gz)
also exists and is not damaged (e.g. copy it somewhere else and gunzip; the
CRC checking will croak if something went wrong).

What about my suggestions?

You either need to get xfs going or add FontPath entries to your XF86Config.

I followed!

I checked for the fonts.dir and fonts.alias. I run mkfontsdir on all
directories and I even have xfs running all the time:

komsys-pc-lr:~!52> ps ax | grep xfs
  983 ?S 0:00 /usr/bin/X11/xfs -daemon

Here we are Thanks very much.

But still, probably someone has an idea what went wrong:
- I had an empty misc/fonts.alias
- when I run update-fonts-alias on misc, a file called
misc/fonts.alias.update-new was created -- but empty.

=> I copied the fonts.alias from my up and running laptop
XFree-installation and now it runs.

Nonetheless, I would be very interested in knowing why the f...
update-fonts-alias failed -- or what I made wrong.

Thanks for all your help!!! Thanks to all of you.

One final but important question related to this thread: how is it
intended by the Debian Team to configure X-4 on a PC? During the
installation of it I was not asked to configure anything for X.

Any help?

Thanks in advance,

Lukas
PS: I know of the command-line tool xf86config.
