kernel produces unresolved symbols

2003-02-22 Thread Roman Joost
Normally i go through the following steps to build my own kernel:

make menuconfig
..
make dep bzImage && make modules && make modules_install

After the compiliation process, i copy my kernel into /boot and reboot. Last
time i get some unresolved symbols after a depmod:
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.19/kernel/drivers/char/drm/gamma.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.19/kernel/net/ipsec/ipsec.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.19/kernel/net/irda/irda.o

This kernel is made by:
make menuconfig
..
make-kpkg kernel_image
make_kpkg modules_image

I read that a good kernel is made by:
make dep
make bzImage etc.

I would ask, what im doing wrong in these steps? Is something wrong with my
debian way of kernel compilation?

Thanks for any ideas...

Roman

It works with the old mozilla 0.9.9 as far as i know. There is a project namend
croczilla to build a mozilla with native svg support. Some basic functions are
implemented. That is the only way to *view* svg in a browser in linux ...

If i set up a new gnome2 theme in the gnome-control-center, restart my X-Session

Is there a way to load my theme on startup? Maybe a program what i miss? I

Try to choose another font in the gnome preferences. The newer mozilla builds
use gtk1.2 and therefore, you should change your system font in the
gnome-control-center (gnomecc).

If you don't have access to gnomecc, try to create a ~/.gtkrc in you homefolder
and put something in as following:
style "user-font"
{
  fontset="-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1"
}
widget_class "*" style "user-font"

Did these packages work for somebody who has an ati radeon card? I tried them

out, the dri modules for ati are gone into the new xfree build? Right? So -
maybe i had a mix between XFree 4.2 and 4.3 or i missed something. If someone

Is there a better way under debian to control the services. I managed them

The rcconf won't work correctly, but i looked for a good slim and fast program -
grafically or not.

Hm.. i don't know if everything works fine at your compile time, but what helps

darn - nasty pango problems...

I get some nasty pango and libgtk problems after upgrading:

Is there a way to get this working? I figured out, that the new gcc-3.2 wont
link some problems properly (e.g. mplayer). Is there a new linker available and i
didn't installed it? Maybe this is the error?

Create or edit your ~/.xinitrc:

I dont know if "afterstep" is the right afterstep binary, but after "exec" there
should be a path to the windowmanager executable.

Try to set the mixer settings manually with "alsactl store" and if this runs
without error, it'll maybe a init.d script problem. I think, if you try to store
the mixer settings with alsactl, it complaints about some error (dont know
anymore what it exactly was). If so, try to reinstall the alsa-modules. This
helped me getting out the problem and the alsa-scripts storing the mixer
settings correctly.

ATI Radeon 7500 - what drivers for tv?

2002-10-06 Thread Roman Joost

Iam a little bit dazzled about what for drivers have to i use for mplayer and
TV. If i use mplayer with xv output and switch then to another virtual desktop,
i have an mplayer screenshot in this position. Then i've to switch back and the
movie will go on. I can't minimize the mplayer window, because the image won't
go away. There is allready an "screenshot". Its maybe a bug in the XV Extension
or in the ATI Driver. Don't know.

I using the experimental XFree86 4.2.X debian packages + the latest DRI
snapshot. Hardware Acceleration works very well, but this is the only problem i
have. I looked at the gatos page, but don't know if the drivers will fix this
problem. Anyone have an idea what drivers should be used? And if i've to use the
gatos one, which Driver should i enable in XFree86Config? Should i leave it to
"ati" or is it "ati2" ?

Thanks for any comments..

DRI with ATI Radeon 7500 and XFree 4.2.1 not more working?

2002-10-07 Thread Roman Joost

I don't know why, but i can't start my X anymore after i upgraded to a newer
XFree 4.2 version. I downloaded a new dri build, installed it, and after
initialisation X startup fails. I tried it with the older gatos ati.2 drivers
and drm. After struggling around, it works a little bit, but glxinfo tells me :

Radeon DRI driver:
Compatibility mode for DRM driver version 1.2.0
TCL will be disabled, expect reduced performance
(prefer DRM radeon.o 1.3.x or newer)
disabling TCL support
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes

I don't know whats wrong. What should i use? I used before the GATOS drivers,
the dri builds and it works near perfect. After i tried the GATOS one, i
can't use the dri builds anymore. I tried to erase all drm builds from GATOS in
/lib/2.4.19/.
but i can't bring XFree up to work. If someone has the same problems, please
give me a sign. Maybe its a little bug in the newer XFree builds, so i will
contact the package maintainer.

I attach the XFree log file, maybe there is a hint in it.

Thanks for ideas!

Add this line to your sources.list and install XFRee 4.2:

#XFree 4.2
deb http://people.debian.org/~branden/ sid/$(ARCH)/

If you want to enable 3D Acceleration, you've to download the radeon dri package
from dri.sf.net. If 3D direct rendering works, "glxinfo" should put a line like:

direct rendering: enabled

If everything with DRI works, please give me a hint. I can't install the dri
package anymore and have to use the GATOS package. I think the GATOS one, are
older than the dri one.

Snort+PostgreSQL won't work?

2002-10-29 Thread Roman Joost
I tried to play a little bit with snort and postgres, but i can't get them to
work. I installed snort-pgsql and created the tables as described in the little

After a restart of the snort system, it fails to output the data to the

I looked a bit around in the net and found a message about a bug in the

Maybe anyone is using the latest debian snort with postgres? The fix displayed

I want to compile a tutorial from gamedev.net -> exactly this link:

Im using the xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk package for my ATI 7500 3D Hardware
acceleration (urks). I don't believe that the package will do the undefined
references. I compile with:

 gcc lesson06.c -o lesson06 -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lGL -lGLU -lXxf86vm

Im loading the glx package with no problems on startup.

I installed grub like with the grub-shell or with grub-install.
shell:
root (hd0,4)
setup (hd0)

where hd0 should be the mbr, or grub-install "(hd0)".

My configfile looks like this:
---
timeout 30
color light-green/brown blink-red/blue
default 0
fallback 1

title GNU/Linux
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20 root=/dev/hdb5 hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi

title Linux-old
kernel /bzImage-2.4.16 root=/dev/hdb8 hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi

title Windows 98 boot menu
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
---

The second thing is, that i can't boot my windows anymore. After
choosing the menu option, it won't any further :( Should it be
reinstalled?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Roman

Hm.. but my boot device is hda5 - its set in the grub-shell like:
root (hd0,4)
after that i start from "boot", so i can only append

configfile /grub/menu.lst

I've seen no parameter for grub-install, where i can define which
configfile grub should use.

I did it - all seems fine:

The same problem. I've the grub-shell, not the menu. The root is defined
at this point - i have only type in to load the menu:

configfile /grub/menu.lst

Grub is installed as expected in the linux filesystem:
/boot/grub/menu.lst and /boot is /dev/hda5

Re: bootmanager madness

2003-03-30 Thread Roman Joost
Andreas helped me out. The solution was a duplicate /boot directory in
the /boot directory - like: /boot/boot/grub/ without a menu.lst. I
deleted this duplicate directory and installed the "original" grub.
After a reboot, i've my boot menu back :)

So, still one problem remains, that i can't boot to windows. Maybe
someone has an idea or i've to reinstall this windows. Okey - it's not a
problem - i don't work with it.

Re: help!! my partition table is lost after a next reboot ...

2003-04-02 Thread Roman Joost
Firstly - thanks for the help.

Secondly i fixed it with a bit luck. I found a printout from my
partition table so i removed all the rescued, but wrong partitions and
created all partitions myself. It worked fine with one exception: i
created my boot partition with: mkpartfs logical ext2 XXX - so
parted created a new filesystem and erased the data. Okey.. installed
the kernel, grub and thats it.

parted and gpart rescued only my primary partitions. I had few logical
partitions so this partitions wasn't rescued by gpart or parted.

If someone had the same bad luck, i'll recommend to do this:

1. print out your partition table or rescue it, like Kevin said: fdisk -ul /dev/hda
>part.table
2. remove all the partitions
3. create a new partition table without any filessystem (parted:
mkpart). parted catched my filessystems than. I read, that this should
work also after a reboot.

So, thats it. Thanks,

create an image of a partition

Does somebody know a better way to create an image of a existing

I know dd=/dev/hda1 of=windows_partition.img, but the image has a size

Maybe someone know a good tool or some docs, which describes a good way

I don't know if this helps, but maybe some configfiles are deprecated,
which cause this fonts.

1. Look at your /etc/X11/XftConfig. Thats the global config file, which
handles the fontpaths for gtk2 and kde.
2. Do you have a ~/.xftconfig in your home? Maybe edit it or erase it.
3. GTK1 applications are defined through ~/.gtkrc configuration file or
"gnomecc". GTK2 has gnome-control-center or kde has kcontrol (or maybe
newer.. don't know - i don't use kde).
4. GTK1 applications use the X Fonts. These fonts are available through
your X session. Maybe you should check your entries in your
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4.
5. For example: the mozilla builds from mozilla.org are gtk1
applications. You've define the fonts through gnomecc (gnome control
center) or by editing your home gtkrc.

Maybe this helps you out.

Maybe not a debian specific problem, but i hope some debian users out there have
configured her mozilla to work with plugger.

My problem is, that i configured plugger with mplayer "support" and can look
quicktime movies fine. I tried the plugger testing grounds and all seems work
smoothly. I tried to watch some quicktime movies at apple.com and figured out,
that my plugger seems to starting mplayer all the time. I don't know
why. The mplayer window appears and disapears and appears and... So it seems,
that mplayer want to play the stream and plugger kills the application.

Thats my quicktime config:
video/quicktime: mov,qt: Quicktime animation
video/x-quicktime: mov,qt: Quicktime animation
exits repeat ignore_errors maxaspect swallow(MPlayer): mplayer -wid $window
"$file" >/dev/null 2>/dev/null

If someone has an idea to get mplayer to work with this movies i'd like to know.

emu10k1 - bass become more distorted

2003-06-30 Thread Roman Joost
Maybe a bit off-topic, but I figured out a problem regarding the bass
and treble controlls of my emu10k1 alsa modul. If I unmute the "tone",
the bass and treble controllers working correctly. The Problem is, if i
increase the bass "volume", the bass become more and more distorted. Is
this a problem of the alsa driver or of a missconfiguration. The old
"oss" emu10k1 driver, was working correctly.

If someone has an idea, write a reply.

Maybe your pixmap paths are not setup correctly. I've the same problem
for some of my programs, but in most times it works correctly. You can
set you pixmap paths in the "wmakerconf" tool or by hand with an
editor in $HOME/GNUStep/Defaults/Windowmaker.

There are two entrys: Pixmap- and Iconpath. Iam not shure, which path is
to set correctly, but i think, that the iconpath must be verified.

I hope, it'll help ...

installation of new compiled alsa modules failing

2003-07-12 Thread Roman Joost
I compiled new alsa modules with "make-kpkg modules" and installed them:

 dpkg -i alsa-modules-2.4.20_0.9.3a-1+10.00.Custom_i386.deb

The problem occures during the installation process:

Storing ALSA mixer settings ... failed
Shutting down ALSA (version 0.9.3a): done.
Starting ALSA (version 0.9.3a): card-via686a-failed failed
invoke-rc.d: initscript alsa, action "restart" failed.
dpkg: error processing alsa-modules-2.4.20 (--install):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 alsa-modules-2.4.20

What can i do? Is there a possibility to ignore this message or install
the package with no "warning" messages? The problem is, that this
package is not fully installed and for every upgrade, the script tries
to shutdown the alsa driver. After that, i can't get the sound to work unless i
reboot my pc.

Thanks for any ideas.

Thanks - that was my problem. I figured out, that /etc/alsa/modutils/0.9
doesn't have an autoconfiguration tag. So i deleted the content of
/etc/alsa/modutils/0.9,
added ### DEBCONF MAGIC at the first line and voila
1. i can reconfigure alsa-base
2. i can install my modules.

Thanks a lot!

There are some programs which can build a gif banner, but not in the
easy way as fireworks can do. You'll be able to build some nice
animations with gimp (theres an animation plugin).

But on the other hand, theres nothing aquivalent to macromedia flash.

So -if he wants to lern the gimp animation plugin, there are some
tutorials in the web. It creates a pretty good gif.

lots of zombies with Mozilla, MozillaFirebird or psi

2004-01-29 Thread Roman Joost
I had lots of Zombie processes lastly on my debian sid box and can't
find the problem. Does somebody run into similar problems with wrong
preferences or something?

The following programs causing zombie processes:
Mozilla: 1.6-1
PSI: 0.9-2
MozillaFirebird (Nightly Build): Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US;
  rv:1.7a) Gecko/20040127 Firebird/0.8.0+
Rhythmbox: 0.6.5-1

Are there some tools, to look what happens with the program and which
causes these zombie processes? Maybe something like: garlic ;)

colorscheme for vim in console

2004-04-25 Thread Roman Joost
I'm looking for a colorscheme for my xterm+vim combination which has not
the same contrast as black background and white foreground fonts.
I tried some colorschemes, but they only work well with gvim. After
googling a bit around, I tried to set my xterm with other colors, but
this breaks the colors in other programs (eg. mutt), which is not what I want.
Some links pointed me to a self compiled xterm, which I now have and it
has 256 color support (dunno why debian xterm doesn't support 256
colors). The tests in the vttest directory are working very well.

I tried to add more colors to my .Xdefault file, like:

  !XTerm*background: DarkSlateGray
  XTerm*color20: MidnightBlue
  XTerm*color21: LightGreen

and reference them in vim like:

  hi Normal ctermfg=Black ctermbg=20 guifg=Black guibg=grey20

This isn't working unfortunately and I dunno any further solutions.
Maybe it isn't working at all, that I see the same colorscheme in xterm
as in gvim. Does somebody know, what I missed or have a nice working
xterm+vim and can give me a push in the right direction?

Thanks!
