apt-proxy
Hi.I am using apt-proxy to provide a Debian mirror to my network. This afternoon, I tried to install kde, by typeing "apt-get install kde" in a client. It almost worked, but it stucked. After searching among many log files, I found that "libgadu3_1.7~rc2-1_i386.deb" and "ekg_1.7~rc2-1_i386.deb" were the problem. The are part of "ekg". This is what happen when I try to install "ekg" (some messages are in Portuguese) :# apt-get install ekgLendo Lista de Pacotes... ProntoConstruindo Árvore de Dependências... dchroot & schroot
Hi I have both dchroot & schroot installed on my box, but I want to just keep one. On seeing: schroot shares most of its options with dchroot, but offers vastly more functionality. I decided to remove schroot because I don't need those fancy functionality. but I can't because: The following packages have unmet dependencies: dchroot: Depends: schroot (= 1.0.2-1) but it is not installable so, what's the relation between the two? Can I just keep one instead? thanks -- Tong (remove underscore(s) to reply) http://xpt.sourceforge.net/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I then wondered what the non-free part was about, and i still do i guess :) If i dont need the non-free part then i suggest the manual is changed, i could just change my sources.list file to match the one in the manual, but i like to know what im doing instead of just doing it :) Thanks for all the responses! > > -- > Matus UHLAR - fantomas, [EMAIL PROTECTED] ; http://www.fantomas.sk/ > Warning: I wish NOT to receive e-mail advertising to this address. > Varovanie: na tuto adresu chcem NEDOSTAVAT akukolvek reklamnu postu. > Remember half the people you know are below average. > > > -- > To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] > with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: PostgreSQL Missing Function Error
Hi Roberto, Thanks for the reply. No I didn't use the 'createlang' command, isn't that for adding new languages to postgreSQL? The earth distance functions are installed as standard with the main package and both machines got the default installation. Also both machines seem to have the earthdistance library 'earthdistance.so' located in '/usr/lib/postgresql/lib/' however one works and one doesn't. I'm stumped... Re: Install on HP Pavilion DV6119US?
Okay, solved. Thanks to a message in this list, I knew the problem lay in ntfsresize. I tried using Alt-F2 to switch to the second VT of the Debian installer, but for no reason I can figure out, any command to BusyBox that would access the filesystem (including ls or df) froze the computer. So I booted Knoppix and ran ntfsresize from one of its VTs, and got: ntfsresize v1.13.1-WIP (libntfs 9:0:0) Device name: /dev/sda1 NTFS volume version: 3.1 Cluster size : 4096 bytes Current volume size: 66534257152 bytes (66535 MB) Current device size: 66534257664 bytes (66535 MB) Checking filesystem consistency ... 100.00 percent completed Accounting clusters ... Cluster accounting failed at 3147732 (0x3007d4): extra cluster in $Bitmap Filesystem check failed! Totally 1 cluster accounting mismatches. ERROR: NTFS is inconsistent. Run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot it TWICE! The usage of the /f parameter is very IMPORTANT! No modification was and will be made to NTFS by this software until it gets repaired. Taking the program's advice, I booted into Windows and ran chkdsk /f twice, rebooting a total of three times. (Okay, I overdid it, but it cost me nothing.) And as I type this, the Debian Installer is resizing the partition. So, since none of the installer developers seem to read this list, I suppose I had better make a bug report out of this. That error message should be passed along to the user, not just ignored. And why did the installer freeze when I ran "df"? By looking at the dependencies for dchroot and schroot then you see that dchroot depends on schroot but schroot doesnt depend on dchroot, so you can keep just schroot and delete dchroot. More Pavilion problems
The install got to the point of "remove the CD and reboot". And it won't boot. During bootup it reaches the line: Checking TSC synchronization across 2 CPUs and then it never returns. I have to power down. Same in safe mode. This is 2.17.1. (I believe--I didn't think to look. In any case it's the default kernel the installer installs.) Neither Google nor AltaVista seems to have reports of a freeze at that point. The CPU is a Turion 1.8 GHz. Any suggestions? Maybe try a non-SMP kernel first? I'm breaking a thread here because for some reason debian-user is delaying all my postings by a variable time of up to 24 hours. I posted a response to the previous thread two hours ago as I write this, but my own message hasn't appeared here for me to reply to and maintain the thread. Check and make sure it is running before you try this command and afterwards see if it is stopped. If not, try to stop it by hand, should be something like /etc/init.d/apache stop, see if the same grep error comes up. Non-interactive apt-get?
Hey Folks! I'm in the process of rolling out a rather large grid of Linux nodes, many of which are Debian. I'm having some difficulties in automating certain aspects of my Debian roll-outs, and I'm hoping you can provide some insight. The issue in brief: I'm trying to fully automate apt-get. I have a detailed procedure as to what packages are put in place, and configurations are copied over in an automated way. I want to normalize the pkgs installed on these machines via apt-get, in a non-interactive way. For example, I've been using something like: apt-get -y -q=2 --force-yes install This works alright, but still requires user interaction for a few packages. How does one go about forcing, without exception, apt-get to proceed without human input? Thanks so much for your help! extremely slow 3w-9xxx
Hi All, I have a 3ware 9550SX-4LP RAID controller with 4x 300 GB SATA drives on them in RAID5 config. Furthermore, I installed Debian testing on LVM (only /boot on a normal partition). I used the ISO from 3Ware to install: http://www.3ware.com/kb/article.aspx?id=14860 and I am running their 2.6.8. smp kernel. The machine is a dual Xeon machine, 4 GB RAM. Should be screaming fast.. it is not. It is extremely slow. Idiotic figures from iostat. Output when I was moving a couple of tar files (several GB) from one LV to another LV (or partition if you like): avg-cpu: %user %nice %system %iowait %steal %idle 0.000.000.25 49.750.00 50.00 Device:tpsMB_read/sMB_wrtn/sMB_readMB_wrtn sda 53.27 0.25 6.03 0 12 Why so much iowaits? What can I do about this? 6 MB/s is *not* normal I guess... Thanx in advance for your helpt! Pim -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Printing the date just before execution of commands in bash
Hi all. I'm wondering if anyone knows how I might be able to execute the same command just before the execution of a command issued at the prompt of a bash shell. Currently, I have my bash prompt set up so that it displays the current date. If I can print the date just before each command is executed, I can always be able to get a sense of how long each command has taken. Anyone has any idea how I might go about printing the date just before the execution of each bash command? I just don't know where I would start. If I can print the date just before each command is executed, I can always be able to get a sense of how long each command has taken. if not each command, using 'time command' rells you much more and also tells you exactly how much did command take to complete, while seeing two times you have to substract it (not so easy sometimes, 10:23 vs 09:47), if you haven't lost it from your screen already... Good point. For subtracting times I use 'echo $((`date --date= +%s` - `date --date= +%s`)). This gives me the difference in seconds. I can then divide by 60 for minutes, etc. I know is not precise (to milliseconds for example), but it suffices for my purpose. However, I do admit that using time for commands is probably a lot better. Besides, I can never get a "precise" time with just inserting the date in the prompt because if the terminal sits idle for some time, the time in which a command starts executing can not be correctly determined this way because you never really know how much time went by (by just looking at the prompt) before the command started execution. Wouldn't it be nice if bash would allow a "secondary" definable "prompt" that would be issued just *before* command execution? Then stuff like printing date before commands could be done. Just a wish. :-) But thanks for input. -- Sincerely Jose Alburquerque -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Two questions about boot scripts
I don't particularly like gdm and so I made the script in init.d nonexecutable. I feel, though, this was likely the wrong way. What is the right way to do it? The whole Debian bootscript system is somewhat intimidating to a Slackware user, and so I am hesitant to go in there willy-nilly. Also, where would I be best advised to add something to start esd, as in '/usr/bin/esd -nobeeps'? Is there a config file which will be seen and read during boot? choppy sound with via ingame, sb resets on reboot
Hello list, on a new installation of Etch, up to date, have a sound problem. The onboard chip is a Via 8235 and was detected on install and works fine except giving choppy sound which slows the game down significantly when playing lxdoom (yes a bit of retro fun). Put in an old SB Live 512 (PCI), gameplay is fine with this, but I have to run alsaconf every time before wanting to play as on boot the machine defaults to the Via chip again. Alsamixer then (after alsaconf) shows SB live where before it would only show the Via chip. Problem is with this that I loose my network connection on eth0 every time I run alsaconf. Network is a Realtek card, NOT integrated so should be independent from the via chip. Any ideas for a more elegant solution than what I'm doing now? Would it help to disable onboard sound in the BIOS ? Thanks a bunch - -- Kind Regards, B. Hoffmann ___ All New Yahoo! Mail Tired of [EMAIL PROTECTED]@! come-ons? Re: Broken X fonts in emacs21, emacs bug?
By now, you have probably fixed this problem, but I have been wrestling with font issues for several weeks now. I include a rough webpage with a recipe that has led to consistently pleasing fonts in both gnome and KDE. Art Edwards Daniel Johnson wrote: Twice now I have found emacs21 display squares instead of fonts after doing an update in Sid, and once they were fixed by an update. It seems that it is either an update to X, or some fonts package that breaks things rather than emacs. I believe both times that it broke apt was updating both X, and something to do with fonts, but I can't be sure of that. Other versions of emacs seem to be fine such as, emacs-snapshot, emacs-snapshot-gtk, xemacs21. Also other athena widget apps seem to be fine. Fonts are fine when emacs is running in a terminal. I've talked to a pal who has the same problem, and I've seen similar problems when searching through the debian mail archive, and have yet to see a fix. If this isn't a bug I would like some help fixing it. I recently rebuilt my xorg.conf starting from X -configure here is a clip from it, and a related bit from the log in case that helps anyone tell me what is wrong. Since other versions of emacs work it isn't high priority for me, but if it's a bug I would like to get a bug report filed. In the past, I have simply installed every package with the word font in its name or discription and, eventually, the fonts looked reasonable. (This is similar to how I was told to work with classical thermodynamics, where one simply differentiates everything with respect to everything else and hopes for the best.) With the recent move top Xorg, this strategy, if I can call desperation a strategy, has failed. This came to a head when xemacs suddenly came up in what I think are called ttf-preschool fonts and I was forced to grapple with a problem that was both challenging and boring. I should point out that I am not paid to install fonts, but to do solid state physics. Because my curiosity about fonts is limited, I have developed a recipe based on some perusal of the web. I only claim that this has worked on three different boxes. I don't claim to know why. xorg.conf file Based on a web page (url to be installed later), the font paths in Section “Files” should be approximately in the following order (my comments, not present in my xorg.conf file, are in blue and surrounded by square brackets):Section "Files"FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc"FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1"FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts"# path to defoma fontFontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType"FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-bitstream-vera"...[[All the rest of the ttf- font packages, i. e. ttf-lucida. Putting unscaled first is a better idea for flat panel displays]]FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi" None of these font paths will work without a non-empty fonts.dir file. For example, the font path/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefontswill be removed from the list when xorg starts if there is no fonts.dir file in that directory. Insertion of a validcopy of this file requires the use of mkfontdir. For example,#mkfontdir /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefontswill do the trick if you have already created the fonts.scale file in /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts. Without that, the above command will place a useless, zero-length fonts.dir file in the directory. So, for each directroy under /usr/share/fonts/truetype, issue the following commands (order is crucial) #mkfontscale /usr/share/fonts/truetype/fontdir#mkfontdir /usr/share/fonts/truetype/fontdirwhere fontdir is the appropriate directory name (msttcorfonts, or ttf-bitstream-vera,

Re: Broken X fonts in emacs21, emacs bug?
OK, so this is the real fix. Move FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/" to the top (above the misc). I don't understand why, but this gives great fonts for xemacs21. I've revised the web page accordingly. I don't claim to know why. xorg.conf file Based on a web page (url to be installed later), the font paths in Section “Files” should be approximately in the following order (my comments, not present in my xorg.conf file, are in blue and surrounded by square brackets):Section "Files"FontPath “/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi”FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc"FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1"FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts"# path to defoma fontFontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType"FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-bitstream-vera"...[[All the rest of the ttf- font packages, i. e. ttf-lucida. Each of these creates a directory in /usr/share/fonts/truetype]]FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/:unscaled"[[75dpi whould precede 100dpi so that fonts are not huge. Putting unscaled first is a better idea for flat panel displays]]Note that I have put the 75dpi at the top. This does not come from the web. However, this is apparently the fix for xemacs. If 75dpi is at the bottom, I get the ttf-preschool fonts. None of these font paths will work without a non-empty fonts.dir file. So, for each directory under /usr/share/fonts/truetype, issue the following commands (order is crucial)#mkfontscale /usr/share/fonts/truetype/fontdir#mkf

If either of those points is false, then you need a more secure solution. Regards, Roberto -- Roberto C. Install the Debian Reference (debian-reference-en) and read §§ 2.4.2 and 2.4.3 and 8.1.4 from /usr/share/doc/Debian/reference/reference.en.txt.gz . You can create a new script such as /etc/init.d/local.sh and put all of your initialization commands in it. Then you would use update-rc.d to tell Debian what runlevels to start and stop that script's daemons and settings, e.g. # cd /etc/init.d # cat > local.sh #!/bin/sh /usr/bin/esd -nobeeps ^D # # That was a Control-D.
