'setxkbmap dvorak' not working

2001-03-23 Thread Adrian Kubala
I run unstable;

I've seen a few debian-related docs which imply that 'setxkbmap dvorak' and
'setxkbmap us' should work, but both give me an 'Error loading new keyboard
description.'

A search for dvorak keymaps for x turns up one in the gnome-applets package,
and one in the kbd package, neither of which look like they'll make setxkbd
work. I'd like to use setxkbd rather than xmodmap and some file I dig up
somewhere, or at least know why I can't.

Is this an unstable-broken thing? (I didn't see any files that looked useful
in stable though). Anybody know how to set up dvorak 'properly' in debian?

FWIW, I use xmodmap. In fact, I'm the only one using my system, so I
munged the gdm init files to run xmodmap during startup; I used to run
it in .xinitrc.

If you decide to give up on that other command, my xmodmap for Dvorak
is at http://genehack.org/linux/dvorak.html>

Good luck,

john.

I have also got this before. I could be wrong but I think it had something to
do with either:

I could be wrong though, it's been a while since it happend.

Re: Why does apt-get want to remove all these packages?

2001-03-23 Thread Shaul Karl
Running
apt-get update
solved most of the problem.
Now it only wants to remove console-apt, which is in stable and has a dummy
package in unstable, but not in testing. Where as my system runs testing.
Doesn't looks to me justified since I don't notice any dependency problems.

This is generally a sign of broken dependencies or a corrupted package
archive. Yes, if you commit this, you may have to reinstall a
substantial list of packages. Better to find out what's wrong first.

In the first case, try re-running apt-get update to update your package
list(s). This may resolve dependencies.

In the second case, you can find backup archives as
/var/backups/kpkg.status*. Check to see if one of these might serve to
replace what you have under /var/lib/dpkg/status.

You can also check with dselect or (far preferable) aptitude to see what
packages are conflicting.

Hola

Who cares!! There is no need for special drivers to use a HP DJ (believe me, I
own one!!)!! But if you must, apt-cache search cups - it comes with specific
support for DJs!!!

BTW, I'm just kidding!! :)

Hi,

I have had some trouble with this too. You need might need some oldlibs.
The name of the libs are the same, but the libs are not.

I do not remember which oldlibs. Look in the directory oldlibs on the ftp
server and install what seems logical (it were just a few packets).

Look under /usr/doc/iptables/html after installing iptables (AFAIK you
can install iptables even when running the 2.2.X kernel).

Debian packages for PLplot 5.0.2 available

2001-03-23 Thread Rafael Laboissiere
Debian packages for the latest stable release of PLplot (5.0.2) are
available.

The packages work for the Debian "potato" distribution (2.2). They are
available in both the Debian unstable repository and the apt-getable
location in the PLplot web site.

To upgrade your packages, just add the following lines to your
/etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://plplot.sourceforge.net/resources/debian ./
deb-src http://plplot.sourceforge.net/resources/debian ./

then run "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade" (or "apt-get dist-upgrade"
if you are upgrading from the 4.99j packages).

There are many improvements from version 5.0.1 to 5.0.2, see the
announcement at http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/plplot. The plplot-doc
package contains the full documentation that is now managed with DocBook.
You will find there the PLplot manual in the following formats: html, pdf,
ps, and info. The html on-line manual is registered with doc-base, so you
can easily access it by pointing your browser at http://localhost/dc
(supposing that doc-central is installed) and going to section Apps/Math.

Also, the plplot-dev package contains man pages for all the PLplot functions
in the public API.

As usual, report any bugs using the Debian BTS (Bug Tracking System,
http://bugs.debian.org), the more convinient way beeing through the command
reportbug (available in the Debian package with the same name).

Debianly yours,

Why? I used my own set of scripts for a long time and switch now over to
cfengine because it's nearly the same as my hardly developed scripts but
better.

I set a link on every machine from /etc/cfengine to my nfs mounted
directory. Because our machines running multiple OS I start cfengine at

Did you know that the kernel module and alsa are different things?
Either you use the kernel module that you built with your kernel or
alsa, which has it's own kernel modules.
I stepped into the same trap a while ago, and how is everybody supposed

gzipped dvi's

It works in tetex-bin 1.0.7-1 and above; you can just use xdvi on
compressed files directly. Unfortunately there were bugs in the xdvi
that was about to make it into potato and decompression support had to
be temporarily removed.

I guess you could try taking just the /usr/X11R6/bin/xdvi from the
tetex-bin package in unstable (you can extract packages manually with
dpkg-deb -x, see the man page), putting that in /usr/local/bin, and
seeing if that works.

language settings in command line and man pages

2001-03-23 Thread Peter O. Fedichev

Hello

I have to work on a linux box with french language set default. Two
questions:

(i have root permissions there)
1) how to switch back to english in the command line?
2) how to make man pages english?

I understand that I must read man pages to find out the answers, but
what if they all are in the language I don't understand? :)

thanks

Newer versions of xdvi have automatic gzip decompression. As it's part
of tetex-bin, I don't know how difficult it would be to get the newer
builds working on a potato box.

Change the locale environment variable. Example (bash):

For an explanation, "apropos locale"

xawtv and sound

2001-03-23 Thread Stan Brown
Well, I'm making progress here. I let dseletc update from the Progeny, and
Debian
sites lats night. Got a new version of Xaw3d, and now I can get xawtv to run!

However, there are still a couple of problems.

1. I am not getting sound from the TV chanel while it's runing. Sound seems to
work
for everything else I have tried (festival, and playing a CDTOM, Realplayer).
What can I do find out why this is not working? I did check with tkmixer, and
the
"video" volume control is about 2/3 of the way up.

3. Also the video fram seems to be shifted up about 1/3 of a frame. That is I
see
the image starting about 1/3 of the frame with the top 1/3 showing on the
bottom of
th eframe.

Whats do I need to do to fix this?

Thanks for the help geting this going!

setting I was getting time outs a lot with apt-get. I
was advised to change it to 57600 (on other distro

and that decreased the number of timeouts greatly, but
using Netscape I have noticed that the downloads

and it stalls a lot. Has anyone else had this
problem, and how did you resolve it? Has anyone ever
changed the mtu and the mtr to 1472 in the

Any help would be appreciated.

do i have to download X4?

Potato-Compact doesn't install on Compaq Smart-2SL Array

2001-03-23 Thread Andreas.Trawoger

Hi!

I'm having problems to install Debian 2.2 on a Compaq ProLiant 3000 with Smart-2SL Array. Debian detects the Smart Controller, but seams to be unable to access the Array (I'm getting a 'No hard disk could be found' error when I'm trying add a Partition to the drive). Suse 6.4 was running fine on the machine, but I added an additional disk and wanted to give Debian a try.

My configuration is as following:
Compaq Proliant 3000
Compaq Smart-2SL Raid Controller
4*4,3 GB SCSI Disks

I have used the Compaq Smart Start CD to configure a RAID-5 Array including all four disks.

Booting with Compact Install Kernel is giving me the following messages:
Compaq SMART2 Driver (v 1.0.10)
cpqarray: finding drives on ida0(SMART-2SL)
cpqarray: ida/c0d0: blksz=512 nr_blks=25149120

Which leaves me wondering why the Debian Install program can't access the Array. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you *sure* you ran the config scripts w/the same

configuring one using md5 passwords and not doing this

should be a config.cache or some other report around

it could be, but check that your keys are in the right places,

I realize it's beyond the control of LILO, but it obviously has

Ben

This is just a guess, but I saw something similar yesterday after
pulling a bad mouse driver from Windows. After the requisite reboot,
Win95 started, then hung. After a reset, Win95 started up okay. The only
thing I can figure is that Windows saw the new mouse/driver, and tried
to do some configuration which created a hang situation. After the
reset, Windows figured the mouse was properly configured and went on in
normally.

All this to say, perhaps your Win95 is seeing a new (ext2) partition,
and trying to figure out what to do about it? I'm not sure what your
next step would be, but perhaps this'll give you a new idea to persue.
(Like, maybe, Debian is running isapnp and reconfiguring some hardware?)

starting programs on kdm/startx startup

2001-03-23 Thread Bastian Bowe
Hello,

I've setup a $HOME/.xsession to run programs on kdm and startx startup.
The problem is that programs started in the back (with &) will stay
alive after closing X.

Here is my .xsession:
#! /bin/bash
# set bellvolume,-pitch,-duration
xset b 100 300 30
#xplanetbg runs every 1200 secs xplanet to render a nice backgroundimage
xplanetbg -nice 15 -projection orthographic -blend -markers \
-cloud_ssec /usr/local/share/xplanet/latest_moll.gif -label \
-latitude 1 -shade 44 -wa 1200 -i /usr/local/share/xplanet/earth.ppm &
exec wmaker
#exec gnome-session --disable-sound

I'm using the debian unstable with X 4.0.2-11.

Thanks in advance.

potato+kernel 2.4.1+X 3.3.6+i810 chipset

2001-03-23 Thread L.V.Gandhi
I had potato with k 2.2.18. I compiled k2.4.1. I compiled modutils 2.4.1
also. Then I did make install modules. Even then I get some modprobe
errors. I have lines kernel symbols match and loaded in the first few
lines of /var/log/messages. What can be the reason?
I have I810 chipset machine. Even with kernel 2.4.1 and agpgart compiled
in kernel and XFCom_i810 driver and also XF86_SVGA driver also I
couldn't get my X working normally. In messages I saw agpgart is invoked
and i810 chipset is recognised. I have RH6.2 k2.2.16 in the same machine
X works oK. Any solutions?

Well, I even copied over the binaries and /etc/sshd to be on the safe
side, then regenerated the keys. No luck. Also, I am getting 'MD5
password support: no' on both machines - and one works. I am quite
confused now.

You can specify the runlevel to boot after the kernel image. So, for
example, at the LILO prompt (hopefully the prompt is enabled in the
lilo.conf - Does BTW anybody know, why it's disabled in the default
lilo.conf (in Potato)?): LILO: 1.
Which should boot into Single user mode. You could also specify
something like "init=/bin/bash", which would directly start a shell.

Thanks guys. That was the problem. I had installed klogd and sysklogd. I
removed sysklogd and installed syslogd-ng and the problems went away.
Should this be turned in as a bug somewhere as they showed no conflicts

Gnome panels disappeared after installing versions from testing/unstable. How do I manage this?

2001-03-23 Thread John Foster
I installed the latest upgrades fron both testing & unstable (not a
production system) and there are 2 bits of wierdness that I have not
seen before. When I start up my system the sequence is to use gdm to
load enlightenment and gnome. When the desktop starts up it now has no
panels. Before the last update the panels would try to start then die
with a segfault. I filed a bug report and 2 days later a new version
appeared. But, Now the panels do not try to start. I tried putting "exec
gnome-session" in .xsession but the panels still did not start. Any
ideas?? Thanks!

With X4.x it should be a link to
/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86
Hopefully by the time it becomes stable, that package will create the link for

Unfortunately after playing with logrotate, it has some significant
drawbacks that would need to be addressed before it could be considered

Is is locking out the ++ console switching as well? If so, try

I had the same problem last week; first the panels segfaulted, then they
wouldn't start at all. This was all with the same debian release of

- switch to a txt-console with ctrl-alt-F1
- su -
- apt-get remove gdm

- init 3

That happened using lout (print starts right at top of the page).
For a while, my "solution" was to put several blank lines at top
to push entire page down.

The solution was to change paper type from "A4" to "letter" in
a Lout setup file.

Then I don't know of any way but (this is real ugly) put it as a dock

you need the audio part of the card turned on, the module i use is 'msp3400'.
so try 'modprobe msp3400'. if your card uses another form of sound chip then
of course this won't work. looks like at least in the current bttv source
the only sound drivers are msp3400 and tvaudio.

probably because the card either doesn't support overlay or your not in
overlay mode
but in 'capture'(i think?) mode. check cpu usage if its really high (more then
say 5%) then most likely thats the reason. some video cards dont support
overlay.
my p200 with the TNT does and xawtv's cpu usage is 0.0%(running 640x480 16bit

looks like mount is being stupid. doesn't seem to be attempting an nfs mount

try

mount -t nfs 10.111.11.1:/home/dko /mnt/test

many commercial unices auto detect if your attempting to do nfs or not i guess
the default mount in linux(or maybe its just debian) does not. for me mount -t
nfs
is a habbit.

It looks like you've got both of your Ethernet interfaces up and working
and IP forwarding working in the kernel. Did you compile in the IP
Masquerade modules into the kernel? That or the configuration of ip_chains
might be in error. In any case there is a great HOWTO on this, the 'Linux
IP Masquerade HOWTO', which can be gotten from several HOWTO locations, I
use . I've been
able to install several IP Masquerading routers based on this.

Could you post the versions of sysklogd, klogd & syslog-ng you installed?
I installed klogd form unstable but not sysklogd -- I've syslog-ng, and

Thanks to you and Moritz Schulte for replies. I got vim-6.0y to compile

ALERT! A DANGEROUS NEW WORM IS SPREADING ON THE INTERNET

March 23, 2001 7:00 AM

Late last night, the SANS Institute (through its Global Incident
Analysis Center) uncovered a dangerous new worm that appears to be
spreading rapidly across the Internet. It scans the Internet looking
for Linux computers with a known vulnerability. It infects the
vulnerable machines, steals the password file (sending it to a
China.com site), installs other hacking tools, and forces the newly
infected machine to begin scanning the Internet looking for other
victims.

Several experts from the security community worked through the night to
decompose the worm's code and engineer a utility to help you discover
if the Lion worm has affected your organization.

Updates to this announcement will be posted at the SANS web site,
http://www.sans.org

DESCRIPTION

The Lion worm is similar to the Ramen worm. However, this worm is
significantly more dangerous and should be taken very seriously. It
infects Linux machines running the BIND DNS server. It is known to
infect bind version(s) 8.2, 8.2-P1, 8.2.1, 8.2.2-Px, and all
8.2.3-betas. The specific vulnerability used by the worm to exploit
machines is the TSIG vulnerability that was reported on January 29,
2001.

The Lion worm spreads via an application called "randb". Randb scans
random class B networks probing TCP port 53. Once it hits a system, it
checks to see if it is vulnerable. If so, Lion exploits the system using
an exploit called "name". It then installs the t0rn rootkit.

Once Lion has compromised a system, it:

- - Sends the contents of /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, as well as some
network settings to an address in the china.com domain.
- - Deletes /etc/hosts.deny, eliminating the host-based perimeter
protection afforded by tcp wrappers.
- - Installs backdoor root shells on ports 60008/tcp and 33567/tcp (via
inetd, see /etc/inetd.conf)
- - Installs a trojaned version of ssh that listens on 33568/tcp
- - Kills Syslogd , so the logging on the system can't be trusted
- - Installs a trojaned version of login
- - Looks for a hashed password in /etc/ttyhash
- - /usr/sbin/nscd (the optional Name Service Caching daemon) is
overwritten with a trojaned version of ssh.

The t0rn rootkit replaces several binaries on the system in order to
stealth itself. Here are the binaries that it replaces:

du, find, ifconfig, in.telnetd, in.fingerd, login, ls, mjy, netstat,
ps, pstree, top

- - "Mjy" is a utility for cleaning out log entries, and is placed in /bin
and /usr/man/man1/man1/lib/.lib/.
- - in.telnetd is also placed in these directories; its use is not known
at this time.
- - A setuid shell is placed in /usr/man/man1/man1/lib/.lib/.x

DETECTION AND REMOVAL

We have developed a utility called Lionfind that will detect the Lion
files on an infected system. Simply download it, uncompress it, and
run lionfind. This utility will list which of the suspect files is on
the system.

At this time, Lionfind is not able to remove the virus from the system.
If and when an updated version becomes available (and we expect to
provide one), an announcement will be made at this site.

Download Lionfind at http://www.sans.org/y2k/lionfind-0.1.tar.gz

Re: Log rotation in Debian /var/log

2001-03-23 Thread Paul D. Smith
%% Ilya Martynov <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes:

  im> Just curious: What drawbacks?

I found two, but only one is really critical:

 1) You can use globbing to have a single stanza match multiple log
files, BUT the entire stanza is run each time for each log file,
_including_ the postrotate scripts!

IMO, this makes it useless for any daemon that generates multiple
log files, like Apache or even INN (the example they use in the man
page!) Who wants to have their Apache or INN servers bounced 15
times in quick succession every night just because it generates 15
log files that need to be rotated?

The postrotate script should be run _one_ time for each stanza,
after all the logs are moved and before they are compressed.

 2) If #1 is fixed, then there's a lesser problem that only one filename
phrase is allowed per stanza. This is probably OK for a system log
utility since it's not a good idea to put your log files in
different places, but for a tool like Apache where you might have
virtual hosts for different users and want to put the log files for
each virtual host in that user's directory, it's going to be pretty
hard to come up with only one globbing expression that matches all
the log files!

Of course, Apache has more serious requirements since you don't even
know the names of all the log files; the current Apache setup parses
them out of the Apache config file. It would be nice if logrotate
handled that; maybe a special include syntax that invoked the file
via popen() or something, and read its output. Or, something.

I believe that ~/.xinitrc is only used either by startx or
kdm/xdm. I'm not 100% sure so I will try this if I'm home.

The program staying up is xplanetbg. This is a bigger problem because
it calls every 1200 seconds xplanet to render a backgroundimage. This
takes about 7 seconds on my k6-2/333. If I start/stop X some time
xplanet starts too often.

Nits:

* -r is probably not desired for this problem. If you run across
a directory named "something.doc", it's clearly not a file and you
may not want to delete it.

* -f is possibly not desired for this problem. If you run across a

Re: kppp and pon (provider)

2001-03-23 Thread John Davidson
I also had difficulties and after having read all ppp posts from the
archives for the last 7 months I decided to only use pon and to start fresh.

First I uninstalled ppp and pppconfig.
Next I installed fresh copies of ppp and pppconfig.
Then after install was complete I ran pppconfig.
pppconfig is relatively easy to use but there are some gotchas - with my
previous linux installs I was not using PAP (I could not get it to work with
kppp, but a regular chat script would work - this time I ignored that and
just said to use PAP because that is what windoze uses)
So I specified PAP and my full userid in the form [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
Then I just followed all the other prompts and did not touch anything.
Then I rebooted and had pppd running.
After that I ran pon provider.

Once I was successfully connecting then I began to make stepwise changes.

One of the packages requirements is "libssl09", I believe. ssh above
also requires it, so once you have ssh installed, there probably won't
be any unmet dependencies.

Try the next time simply to remove the file config.cache and run
configure again. This forces configure to *really* rescan you system for
any headers and that stuff.

There is no 'openssh' package. The 'ssh' package is really openssh.
The 'ssh-nonfree' package is ssh. I personally think that was a
terrible decision on the part of the ssh maintainer... Openssh should
be openssh, and ssh should be ssh.

In any case, add the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://non-us.debian.org /potato/non-US main contrib non-free

Then 'apt-get update', 'apt-get install ssh' and all will be well.

known libc6 2.2.2-2 install failure

2001-03-23 Thread Ben Collins
Ok, it is now a known issue (since I've gotten 5 bug reports over the
past 2 hours). Please refrain from sending more bug reports, and remove
libc6-i586 or libc6-i686 to fix the problem, or don't upgrade until
2.2.2-3 is available sometime tomorrow.

Thanks to all those that did send bug reports.

Ben

modem's and mtr/mru :was unidentified subject

2001-03-23 Thread D. Hoyem
I'm using 2.2r2 and kernel2.2.18pre21 on a PII 350.
Works great now after many reinstalls. I have a Supra
Express 56K modem and when I initially set it up using
pppconfig I used the 115200 setting. With that
setting I was getting time outs a lot with apt-get. I
was advised to change it to 57600 (on other distro
that I have used I never had to change it from 115200)
and that decreased the number of timeouts greatly, but
using Netscape I have noticed that the downloads
speeds are at 300 to 500 bytes and sometimes faster
and it stalls a lot. Has anyone else had this
problem, and how did you resolve it? Has anyone ever
changed the mtu and the mtr to 1472 in the
/etc/ppp/options? Would that help?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Don

Re: beginner -- installing ssh

2001-03-23 Thread Jason Majors
Do you have a non-us site in your /etc/apt/sources.list? Something like
deb ftp://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US stable non-US/main
Most of the security related packages are at non-US, because Congressmen don't
read the Constitution.
