Broadcom BCM4306 802.11b/g and WPA2

2007-04-16 Thread Arnaud Vandyck

Hi list,

I have a PowerBook5.2, G4 1.25Ghz, 15" with a Broadcom BCM4306
802.11b/g and WPA2. I've just buy an Airport Express and I'm new to
wifi.

Googleing around, I found that it's better to use WPA2 than WEP or
nothing, but I can't figure out how to configure this... and is it
possible to do that with my hardware?

(I have no problem with MacOSX and I even copy/paste the key from
/etc/wpaSOMETHING when MacOS asked me about the WPA2 key, so I'm sure
the key is good ;-)).

Many thanks for any pointer to a tutorial or for some example
configuration and some more informations.

Cheers,

No sound on a G3 Blue

2002-08-12 Thread Arnaud . Vandyck
Hi all,

I'm new to the list. My name is Arnaud, I am working as a trainee for html,
xml, java, databases, etc. I am a Debian user for about two years now on i386
(at work).

I've just install Debian on my G3 Blue (at home) and everything works fine but
the sound. Can anybody help me? I do not know how to begin to find what's wrong.

The sound card seems to be recognize, the drivers (DMA something?) are loaded
in the kernel, I am in the audio group...

I do not have the G3 here, but I'll bring it here tomorrow. If someone want
some log, I'll send what you need to help me tomorrow.

Thank you for your patience.

I've never heard about 1.4 for ppc right now.
Sun does not have any port for linux ppc, even for the 1.3.x versions.
Blackdown has a 1.3.1 version in tar.gz format:
ftp://ftp.easynet.be/blackdown/JDK-1.3.1/ppc/FCS-02b/

and IBM as one (but you have to register first).

At blackdown, they port 1.4.1 for i386 and sparc.

share partition between macosx and debian

2003-10-14 Thread Arnaud Vandyck
Hi all,

I'm new to the list... I've just bought a powermbook G4 15' and would
like (as a futur DD ;)) to install Debian on it but maybe also want to
keep mac os x on it.

I already installed Debian on a g3 at home (but only with Debian), and
this time, I'd like to have both systems... (and maybe hurd but it's
another story).

I have a friend who did it but he had to make a FAT partition to share a
partition because linux does not write on usf. Is this statement still
true? Can macosx r/o on ext2-3?

Last thing, I'll probably use Branden Robinson's help page to install,
but is there any documentation about the new debian-installer? Maybe I
can try it and help with a report?

Does the Debian partition still need to be first with swap?

PS: I already read the Installation guide, these questions are to be
sure the informations in the document are still up-to-date.

Thanks for your time,

HOWTO install Debian from another distribution?

2003-10-24 Thread Arnaud Vandyck
[Note: arch=new powermac]
[Sorry for crosspost, I don't know which list is more appropriated]

Hi all,

I do have some problems to boot with the new debian-installer images. I
did also try woody but it fails to recognize my harddisk!

I got a GentooLive for powerpc that boots ok. I could partition my hd
and now I have yaboot configured (some linux and osX). I did copy the
gentoo kernel, modules and modules.conf and told yaboot to boot on it.

I did build debootstrap from another powerpc and launched it. It
installed some packages but I do not have 'ar'! nor a 'functionnal'
Debian system! :(

I did not recall the program that is launched at the first
installation. Also, is it the good way to install Debian from another
distribution? Do you have some more informations about it? What can I
launch to re-install debian? how can I build it?

Many thanks for some links. Now that I have a running linux on the
powerbook, I can try to compile some stuff to install...

Many thanks for your help and for your time,

It did not work out of the box for me. But I found this:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-dpkg/2001/debian-dpkg-200103/msg00043.html

So:

1° edit /var/lib/dpkg/status to fake dpkg is installed (yes it was
installed but not registered in this file!... and I lied on the
version number)

2° apt-get install
 libc6 libcap1 libdb2 libncurses5 libpam-modules libpam-runtime
 libpam0g libreadline4 libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2 mawk dpkg apt dselect

3° dpkg -a configure

4° dselect

Best regards,

PS: at the moment, I have some problems with coreutils (operation not
permitted to lock directory /usr/share/info/coreutils.info)

No... I did use chroot to install the kernel from the cdrom without any
problem, and with the help of #debian and linux@lists.unixtech.be's

Now, I have a running sarge (well, now it's sid! ;)) with d-i!

I can't re-build a correct kernel with ext3 support. I'd like to get a
good .config file for the latest PowerBook G4 (15") with ext3.

Also, in the d-ppc list archive, I found references to the experimental
repository but impossible to get the packages with apt-get, I've had to
download them with ftp! :(

I think I did configure laptop-net correctly, but the debconfiguration
does not do the job. It puts confusion because it puts every
configuration in the same '*' scheme!

I think I'll have a lot of questions for the list to tune my Debian for
the laptop! ;)

The futur for me is to read the documentation of pmud or something that
can tell the laptop (and the harddrive) to have a rest ;)

Excellent! I also modify my keymap to have:

It's better not to mix different states of Debian. You should 'backport'
the package... or maybe install a 'backported' package.

You can see:

And try to find mozilla for woody.

Not at all. A friend made a java pacman and when the game is built, 3
loops and some calculations, it's truely slow on linux but it's ok on
macosX and Windows :-(

It's _exactly_ the same JVM on MacOSX and on linux: IBM j2sdk1.4.

I can give more informations about that later this week if you want.

Is there any doc explaining how to make the root.img myself (and maybe

[OpenFirmware2.4] Can't boot on cdrom ('loader: unrecognized client program format')

2006-02-07 Thread Arnaud Vandyck
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi all,

I'm fighting with my G3 beige old world to install Sarge on it!

It seems it's possible to boot on the cdrom with it:
http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/macppc/models.html#g3v2

I did try that:

0 > setenv boot-device ide1/[EMAIL PROTECTED]:0
0 > setenv boot-file \install\powerpc\vmlinux
0 > reset-all

but it does not want to boot :'(

If I try to boot 'live'
0 > boot ide1/[EMAIL PROTECTED]:0,\install\powerpc\vmlinux

OF says 'loader: unrecognized client program format'

What is wrong with my string? Does someone know how I could boot on my
cdrom?

If I boot from the harddrive with bootx, it was ok but quik did not
successfully install, so now, when I reboot, I have a black screen!

Why does quik do not install is a futur question! ;-)

Many thanks to all for help,

These ones doesn't work at the moment, it's impossible to load the
net/cd-driver floppies, but I did try to install Sarge AND Woody and
they both fail with quik. Reading around on the internet, it seems I
have THE machine that causes problems! G3 beige with Open Firmware 2.4.

So, with Woody AND Sarge (booting with BootX), I could install a
complete Debian installation but it's impossible to boot on the new
installation!

So booting from a floppy?

Great! the root partition is /dev/hda2 and the image is located in
/boot/vmlinux I think (of course I can not boot anymore so I don't know
the exact image name! 2.6.8 or something!).

That could be a solution. If I understand, you mean I have to put a
floppy in the G3 to boot and that's all. So the boot would be 'automatic'?

how to do that, how to write the program? I'm ready to learn everything

I succeded in installing Ubuntu with bootx and I had to copy vmlinux and

There is a lot of work on eclipse at the moment (thanks to Jerry Haltom

Sorry for the delay, but the kernel is fine for me except mol-modules
expected a different release of the kernel-image package so I could not
install mol modules.

Also, even after upgrading
I-don-t-remember-wich-package-with-modules-or-so, I still have problems
booting the kernel-image in unstable (2.6.6), but the latest (2.6.7) is
just fine for me.

Yep, I had a lot of these errors. I went to the relevant build.xml file,
commented the code and do what the task should do (if I recall it was
because of a chmod or something)

> Total time: 14 minutes 24 seconds

After a lot of tries, Eclipse did build... but without javadoc which
seems badly broken on ibm's jdk.

So What to do?

I noticed that only the swt bindings are natives (and the launcher), so
I did try to build the bindings (it's explain in the faq[1]). The
launcher could be skipped by a normal java launching line[2]... I can
run Eclipse, but can't do a lot more[3]...

[DEBIAN-EXPERIMENTAL] Accepted kaffe 2:1.1.4.PRECVS-1 (powerpc all source)

2004-07-15 Thread Arnaud Vandyck
Hi,

Just for you information, latest kaffe CVS HEAD is now in
experimental. I build it on my laptop (powerbook) and try to build it on
different arches (no buildd for experimental at the moment).

I uploaded it to experimental because I'm not sure it builds on every
arches and I'd like to help upstream to build kaffe for all the Debian
arches without problems.

Also, I'm hoping kaffe in testing soon (2 or 3 days) and maybe, when
kaffe will be in testing, I'll chat with upstream to know if I can
upload the latest cvs head to unstable. The problem with the latest cvs
head is it will not build on every arches, but when it builds, it's far
better then the actual release in unstable (that's why I'll put it in
unstable).

Note on the different ports:

. x86 (my day job server):

. paer.d.o (hppa):
  Unmet build dependencies: libpng3-dev libungif4-dev libffi2-dev

. merulo.d.o (ia64):
  Still building

. crest.d.o (m68k):
Still building (but I think 'zip' is missing)

. raptor.d.o (s390):
I was unable to expand the package...

If you can help porting, drop me a mail.

build logs can be found here:

Michael Koch (one of the upstream dev) is in the NM queue at the
moment. He already packaged jamvm (a free java virtual machine) and I
think gcjwebplugin does work with it, but I think he is very busy with
other projects at the moment (classpath, gcj, etc.)

I'm Cc'ing him, so maybe he'll post some news about gcjwebplugin.

You just have to know which applet you run ;-) But you are right, it's
not secure at the moment.

Yeah, but this is no real solution, just a loosy workaround as is

gcjwebplugin may be a solution, but it is not yet ready for prime-time.

You cannot redistribute *even unmodified*! And you cannot install tools
that intend to replace tools in the JDK (java, javac, javah, jar,
jarsigner, etc)... Sun's, IBM's and Blackdown's JDK/JRE are free of
charge but not free software *at all*

Sorry, I can't help, I never did it myself. I admit I have IBM JDK in
/usr/local but it's not really well integrated in my system.

It's the magic of Debian: if you want it do it ;-) By the way, I'm very
busy in my day job at the moment and I'll be more busy until mi-february
where I hope it'll be cooler, then I'll help on setting up the developer
rooms with Pascal Bleser at the FOSDEM (http://fosdem.org) (I also have
a real life! ;-) I just found a new house, well, doesn't matter)

I just want you to know, that I don't have all the time I'd like working
for Debian. So I prefer to give all my energy in packaging new gjdoc,
new kaffe and try to run my projects and my packages with free tools.

If a bug report is filed and a good patch is attached, I can apply it,
test it and upload the package, but I'll not give the little free time I
have on this package.

There is a blackdown release for ppc but only 1.3, not 1.4 and it does
not come with the java-plugin.

You can try gcjwebplugin or get some informations here:

Cloning to an external video projector...

2005-01-06 Thread Arnaud Vandyck
Hi,

I'd have to make a presentation tomorrow (yes!) and I'd like to make it
on my Debian PowerBook ;-) The presentation is about a training in Linux
and the whole session (6 month, full time) will be on Debian boxes!

Imagine how I feel to present it on a Windows laptop! :-P

So, I'd like to run the presentation (Open Office) on a video
projector. I have a Powerbook G4 (15' or '', I never know!)

I already install and patch XFree86 as found somewhere on the web and
also try several XF86Config-4 configuration found on the net but I don't
understand a word ;-)

I'd like my LCD screen to be the largest resolution as possible
(1280x854 I think) and the video projector can have VGA (640x400), SVGA
(800x600) and XGA(?) (1024x768).

I've attached my blody XF86Config-4, if someone can help, I'll wish
him/her a happy new year!

And happy new year to the others :-D

I have already a patched kernel but no more the sources! it was about

patch be integrated in the official trunc?

I found m3mirror here:
http://penguinppc.org/~benh/m3mirror.c

But I can't compile it:

$ gcc -o m3mirror m3mirror.c
m3mirror.c: In function `main':
m3mirror.c:32: error: parse error before '[' token

I did not found it in pmud package. Is it in another package?

$ apt-cache search m3mirror
$

oups...

Thanks for any tips

I think the problem is that blackdown is built with older gcc (not ABI
compatible with Mozilla). A possible solution (but I haven't try and
it's not really acceptable) is to rebuild Mozilla with Gcc 2.95!
