On my i8000 you can press Fn-F7 (font) and it will toggle to a larger
font size that fills the whole screen.

I'm not sure whether this is persistent but mine seems to be.

P.S. When you upgraded did you go from Ximian Gnome to the standard
Gnome packages? I'm thinking of upgrading soon and am wondering about
that step.

Not sure but do you have Unix socket support loaded/compiled in your kernel?

The setup scripts included setup /etc/modutils/ with an ltmodem alias
file to handle this.

Tip for young players: you need to make sure the SMP (Symmetric Multiple
Processors aka SMP) is *NOT* set in your kernel, which it shouldn't be
in the standard packages, to be able to compile it.

The module when compiled works very well.

There is also a script to build a deb that you can install.

Right. *.deb is purely for binaries. There are source debs too (?
*.deb.src) which can be installed using APT/dpkg and even auto built for
you.

I was running 2.2.19pre17 (slightly earlier than yours) with versions
5.99, 6.0a1 and 6.0b4. All of which worked when compiled from source.
The only problem I had was with getting the right headers. The build
process kept complaining about it so I ended up compiling a new kernel
to make 100% sure the kernel headers were the same. Prepackaged ones
may work too.

When you get further into it I would highly suggest moving to Woody
(testing) as there are a lot more fun things to play with but you need
to be somewhat prepared for the odd breakages that may require
backtracking packages.

Good Luck.

Inspiron 8000 IR and Palm (not talking and unreliable IR connection)

2001-12-11 Thread Simon Wong

I am trying to get my Linux installation to talk to my Palm Vx via IR.

I was following the i8100 threadrecently and gave it a go.

I have compiled the IR support into the kernel (2.4.14) and irtty as a
module.

if I do:

#irattach /dev/ttyS3

my palm shows the "Waiting for sender..." window and irdump gives...

~# irdadump
05:44:25.336704 xid:cmd 71b55e9c > S=6 s=0 (14)
05:44:25.426703 xid:cmd 71b55e9c > S=6 s=1 (14)

05:44:25.876700 xid:cmd 71b55e9c > S=6 s=* lonewolf
hint=0400 [ Computer ] (24)

It seems to find the device OK:

~# cat /proc/net/irda/discovery
IrLMP: Discovery log:

nickname: Simon J.P. Wong, hint: 0x8220, saddr: 0x71b55e9c, daddr:
0x567dc24c

However, when I then try and start pilot-xfer:

$ pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyS3 -l

Unable to bind to port /dev/ttyS3
   pi_bind: Device or resource busy

If I kill off the irattach process and try to start pilot-xfer:

$ pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyS3 -l
   Port: /dev/ttyS3

Please press the HotSync button now...
It just sits there until I ctrl-c and kill it.

I have read the Infrared-HOWTO and the tutorial and googled but can't
find any more tips.

I'm also having problems with it sometimes NOT even doing this :-( (like
right at the moment).

Any tips on people's experiences would be very much appreciated.

TIA.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried that but when it says press the hot sync button, I do, and
nothing happens.

Unfortunately, I seem to have slipped further backwards and now cannot
even get discovery mode to find my palm :-(

My /etc/irda.conf is:

~# cat /etc/irda.conf
#irda.conf Version: 1.0
#IRDADEV=irda0
IRDADEV=/dev/ttyS3
#DONGLE= # specify dongle type
#DISCOVERY=-s # if you want use discovery mode, uncomment this
#ENABLE=yes # if you don't need to start irattach, set "no"
~#

My BIOS settings are COM4 and fast IR (slow hasn't seemed to ever work).

Any other ideas?

TIA.

I have been trialling a Cisco Aironet 350 and it seems to work fine.
Had a bit of trouble learning how to set it up (never had looked at
wireless OR pcmcia so maybe not much of a surprise).

If you go with it I can provide some info on setting it up.

Now it's setup I have full hot PnP and it rocks!

I am using irattach /dev/ttyS3 -s to start so it doesn't seem to use

After a lot of stuffing around I now have the palm talking to the laptop

I don't what's different to today :-( but it is working and currently

Does this start automagically when you try and use /dev/ircomm0 i.e. if
I $pilot-xfer -l will it bring up the interface automatically?

I'm getting very erratic succues with my IR connection.

Could please tell me the sequence you use to connect up?

At the moment I am doing,

#irattach /dev/ttyS3 -s

This then loads the irtty module (ircomm built in kernel), starts up the
interface irda0 and *sometimes* my palm says "Waiting for sender..."

When I use irdadump it shows stuff coming from the palm but no response
from pilot-xfer :-(

My setup doesn't seem to be using the irda.conf file.

What steps do you do for connecting to the phone?

Thanks for your help.

Can anyone tell me if this is a problem with the i8000?

I have managed to do one full sync via IR to my Palm Vx but at the
moment it doesn't seem to be working :-(

I have irattach /dev/ttyS3 -s (as in my previous emails) at start-up and
when I do irdadump it shows discovery signals being sent out BUT my palm
is NOT showing any response (as it previously had).

It seems that the kernel/software thinks it's sending but the hardware
isn't??

Should I try loading the maestro driver as a module and try loading them
in different orders?

(Works fine in Windoze so h/w still OK).

That is the sound device used by esd the Enlightened Sound Daemon. I

Do you have X installed and xdm/gdm? You need a login manager to login

Conflict IrDA and Actiontec mini-PCI combo card modem - Inspiron8000

Having now got a reliable IR system working in harmony with the Maestro
3 with tips from the list I have discovered that the ltmodem driver I am
using for the winmodem in the Actiontec mini-PCI combo card I have in my
laptop (Dell Inspiron 8000) is conflicting with IR.

When the modem driver is loaded it works fine but my IR is no longer
functiining and I have to reboot to reset it.

I tried unloading all IR related drivers and ltmodem drivers and
restarting IR with irattach but to no avail.

Has anyone got a way around this problem?

Inspiron 8000 IDE bus speed

2002-01-14 Thread Simon Wong

I have noticed on booting that I have a message saying that an IDE bus
speed of 33MHz is being assumed.

As far as I know the i8000 has a 66MHz bus speed.

Has anyone had any experience with appending idebus=66 to the boot

Will it damage anything if not true?

Will it make much difference to end performance - I'm assuming only for
intensive disk use but that may speed up my "locate" updates?

Sorry, I seem to have that mixed up. It does support UDMA-66 for the
IDE drives.

I'll look at the doc on hdparm further to see if it's worth trying -X66
to get some more speed.

Yes! After much stuffing around i have an IR sync happening with my
Dell Inspiron 8000, kernel 2.4.17 and my Palm Vx.

First step is to have a look at http://www.linux-laptop.net/ for some
notes by someone with the same laptop as you.

You should also have a read of the IR-HOWTO for some background
information. I have found it to be a little out of date but a good
starting point.

I have only really got it working with the 2.4 kernels as I wanted that
series for better USB support.

You need to enable IrDA support in the kernel (built-in or modules) and
have modules/support built-in for ircomm and irtty.

You also need to install the irda utilities (you need irattach to
connect your IR serial port).

It is worthwhile looking at the linux-irda list's archives (Google will
find it) for other's more specific IR experiences .

Good luck.

I'm no expert but try setting up eth1 in /etc/network/interfaces

e.g.

# Wireless
iface eth1 inet static
address x.x.x.x
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway x.x.x.x
name Wireless Adapter

This will allow you to do a ifup/ifdown eth1.

You will also need to make a module alias so that when the interface is
required it will load the module. Modify /etc/modutils/aliases to
include a line like:

# Wireless card
alias eth1 orinoco

The way some of these built in cards seem to go you could get some
interference between various bits of hardware as i have found with my IR
stuff.

Anyway, good luck.

Dell Inspiron 8000 Fn key not working

2002-10-28 Thread Simon Wong
Hi all!

After a recent BIOS update to A20 (I did all the ones in between as
well) my blue Fn key no longer gets passed through to the BIOS.

I used to be able to pull up the battery status (Fn-F3) and enter the
setup (Fn-F1) etc but now it does nothing.

xev reports the same keycode for the button with or without the Fn key
pressed e.g. Fn-F1 returns keycode 67 as does F1 by itself.

I am using Gnome and X4.1.

It used to work with A17 but I don't really want to go back as the
temp/fan control seems to be better with this BIOS.

Has anyone seen this problem and know a way to get it to work again??!

TIA.

I checked out the log and it's not accepting any of the 800x600 modes
from the examples file due to either horizontal or vertical sync being
out of range.

I've tried to find the specs for my monitor on Google but no luck.

My config is:

HorizSync31.5 - 90.0
#VertRefresh 60
VertRefresh 50-70

What ranges do you have for your monitor?

Mine is an IBM ITSX95?

Modeline for 800x600 on Dell Inspiron 8000, Rage 128

2002-11-20 Thread Simon Wong
Does anyone ou there have a modeline that will work for 800x600 on a
Dell Inspiron 8000 with an ATI Rage 128 video card?

I want to get the TV out going for which you need 800x600.

I have looked all over the net and can't find the right info.

Very annoying when it works in Windows but not under X :-(

Thanks very much for the tip - this is driving me insane :-(

There's also another program called videogen that seems more
comprehensive.

I would *really* appreciate it if you could let me know if you have used
800x600.

It seems to be impossible to find details on the IBM screen in these
things.

The XFree86 log definately tells me that the alternate resolutions I'm

On the other hand my Fn keys no longer work either!

Do you think it could be Xmodmap affecting them?

It's all very strange as mine work again too! They seem to

Mind if I ask if you can get lower video modes than 1400x1050 if you

The problem has been solved by increasing my HorizSync and VertRefresh

The Fn-F7(font) button can then be subsequently used to fix up any

Doesn't happen with my A18 BIOS on i8000 and definately happens on A20

Problem or me is that my Fn key keeps dropping in and out so I'm staying

Page up/down keys not working (Dell i8000)

My page up and down keys seem to have stopped working in the console and

I don't think that'll work because the stuff needs to be put in a form

You are sending bits straight to the device.

On my i8000 you can press Fn-F7 (font) and it will toggle to a larger

The setup scripts included setup /etc/modutils/ with an ltmodem alias

2001-12-12 Thread Simon Wong
I am trying to get my Linux installation to talk to my Palm Vx via IR.

I was following the i8100 threadrecently and gave it a go.

I have compiled the IR support into the kernel (2.4.14) and irtty as a
module.

if I do:

#irattach /dev/ttyS3

my palm shows the "Waiting for sender..." window and irdump gives...

05:44:25.876700 xid:cmd 71b55e9c > S=6 s=* lonewolf
hint=0400 [ Computer ] (24)

It seems to find the device OK:

~# cat /proc/net/irda/discovery
IrLMP: Discovery log:

nickname: Simon J.P. Wong, hint: 0x8220, saddr: 0x71b55e9c, daddr:
0x567dc24c

However, when I then try and start pilot-xfer:

$ pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyS3 -l

Unable to bind to port /dev/ttyS3
   pi_bind: Device or resource busy

If I kill off the irattach process and try to start pilot-xfer:

$ pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyS3 -l

IRDADEV=/dev/ttyS3

Conflict IrDA and Actiontec mini-PCI combo card modem - Inspiron 8000

restarting IR with irattach but to no avail.

Has anyone got a way around this problem?

starting point.

Logitech wheel mouse on Dell i8000

2002-02-08 Thread Simon Wong
G'Day all!

I've been trying to get my the scroll-wheel to work on my Logitech wheel
mouse with no luck.

My XFree86-4 config file looks like this and I have the mouse plugged
into the PS/2 port.

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Emulate3Buttons"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Timeout" "50"
EndSection

The mouse itself works fine and all 3 buttons work okay but the
scroll-wheel does nothing.

I have also tried to use the IMPS/2 mouse driver but that results in an
unusuable mouse (pointer jumps all over the place when I move the
mouse).

I am using X 4.1.0-13.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what else to try?

I looked on the Logitech site but didn't see any Linux notes/supprt.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Why not just download the source from http://www.sfu.ca/~cth/ltmodem/
and use the deb build script included?

If you need some pointers on how to do the build ask me, however, it is
very well setup.

I believe there are some issues with conflicts between kernel pcmcia and
the separate package in this kernel version (see the archives).

I am just using the kernel drivers with no problems.

You need to enable Network Device Support -> Wireless LAN (non-ham
radio) -> Cisco/Aironet 34X/35X/4500/4800 PCMCIA cards.

Don't know why it's separated form the other PCMCIA wireless options.

My 2.4.17 kernel config is attached to help. (Note I also support for
Hermes chips too).

HTH.

Actually, just had a look and now I'm not 100% sure (I'm 90%) if I got
the drivers separately :-( Checkout http://airo-linux.sourceforge.net
for more details if you don't have the options in your kernel config.

I agree.

Potato is *really* old as mentioned and you'll feel like you've gone
back in time, IF you want to use a GUI desktop like Gnome.

For learning the command line stuff though and basic sys admin stuff it
will do the job. Keep an eye out for Woody's release as it's *much*
better.

I'd also recommend that your first installation be "practise" I went
through several installs learning the basics.

Then you can reinstall when Woody's released.

HTH.

Logitech wheel mouse on Dell i8000

2002-02-08 Thread Simon Wong

G'Day all!

I've been trying to get my the scroll-wheel to work on my Logitech wheel

My XFree86-4 config file looks like this and I have the mouse plugged

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Emulate3Buttons"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Timeout" "50"
EndSection

The mouse itself works fine and all 3 buttons work okay but the
scroll-wheel does nothing.

I have also tried to use the IMPS/2 mouse driver but that results in an
unusuable mouse (pointer jumps all over the place when I move the
mouse).

I am using X 4.1.0-13.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what else to try?

I looked on the Logitech site but didn't see any Linux notes/supprt.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Why not just download the source from http://www.sfu.ca/~cth/ltmodem/
and use the deb build script included?

If you need some pointers on how to do the build ask me, however, it is
very well setup.

The latest I just built was b9 whochj seems to work fine (as have all

Maybe you could try that version?

I believe there are some issues with conflicts between kernel pcmcia and
the separate package in this kernel version (see the archives).

I am just using the kernel drivers with no problems.

You need to enable Network Device Support -> Wireless LAN (non-ham
radio) -> Cisco/Aironet 34X/35X/4500/4800 PCMCIA cards.

Don't know why it's separated form the other PCMCIA wireless options.

Hermes chips too).

HTH.

Actually, just had a look and now I'm not 100% sure (I'm 90%) if I got
the drivers separately :-( Checkout http://airo-linux.sourceforge.net
for more details if you don't have the options in your kernel config.

The problem is most of the time when someone logs out e.g. on vt8 my

TIA.

Well, I have just updated to A21 and it works again.

It was working for a little while when I had first started using A20 so
I suspect some strange goings on here :-(

If anyone else has experienced this I'd be very interested to hear their

After doing BIOS updates up and down between A17 and A21 (now at A18) my

I checked out the log and it's not accepting any of the 800x600 modes

out of range.

I've tried to find the specs for my monitor on Google but no luck.

What ranges do you have for your monitor?

Mine is an IBM ITSX95?

Still have the same problems, going to see if anyone at SLUG can help
me.

I'll report back here on any developments.

Thanks for your help Daniel.

TIA.

Thanks very much for the tip - this is driving me insane :-(

There's also another program called videogen that seems more
comprehensive.

I would *really* appreciate it if you could let me know if you have used
800x600.

It seems to be impossible to find details on the IBM screen in these
things.

Thanks again.

Fn keys WAS Modeline for 800x600 on Dell Inspiron 8000, Rage 128

The XFree86 log definately tells me that the alternate resolutions I'm
putting in are out of range.

On the other hand my Fn keys no longer work either!

Do you think it could be Xmodmap affecting them?

It's all very strange as mine work again too! They seem to
intermittently drop in and out.

Mind if I ask if you can get lower video modes than 1400x1050 if you
have an ATI Rage128?

Thanks.

I figured as much !

The problem has been solved by increasing my HorizSync and VertRefresh
to crazilylarge numbers as mentioned in another person's email.

The Fn-F7(font) button can then be subsequently used to fix up any
fuzziness.

No, apparently it forces a re-read of the temp sensors.

Doesn't happen with my A18 BIOS on i8000 and definately happens on A20
and A21 BIOS's too. Can't remember if I tried A19.

Problem or me is that my Fn key keeps dropping in and out so I'm staying
with this level BIOS as Fn-z is not working.

Yep, same for i8000 with the A20/A21 BIOS's.

Problem is that you can't charge the damn thing up without turning it on
first.

Page up/down keys not working (Dell i8000)

2002-12-11 Thread Simon Wong
My page up and down keys seem to have stopped working in the console and
gnome terminals.

I ran xev but it's NOT registering them.

The debian package console-common was recently updated and asked me for
a keyboard, which I used "us", which should be fine.

My X settings have not changed and are using "pc104", "us" keyboard.

Does anyone have any clues as to what this may be?

TIA for any tips.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 (BIOS A18).

They were working...damn annoying.

What do you think the kernel stuff may be in 2.4.20?

I can't thank you enough for this bit of info John.

I reseated the connector and voila - they're back :-D

I'm going to have a better look around that site to see what resources
are available.

Thanks again.

I don't think that'll work because the stuff needs to be put in a form
suitable for the printer e.g postscript or HP/GL.

You are sending bits straight to the device.

You need to add the printer to CUPS etc.
