Problems with X and the Intel i855GM integrated graphics
Hi, I just bought a new Dell Laptop. It's an Inspiron 500m with the Pentium M, integrated Intel graphics and an 1400x1050 display. I installed Linux and access on the command line works fine. Now I wanted to configure X but ran into loads of trouble. I downloaded the latest Intel drivers, compiled and installed them. I'm using X version 4.2.1-8 from Debian unstable (the rest of the system is from unstable, as well). My kernel is version 2.4.21. I tried Daniel Stone's 4.3.0 packages as well but they don't work with the Intel drivers. The Intel driver installs the two kernel modules agpgart and i830. Both work find and lsmod shows they're installed. But with all this, I can only get X to work with a maximum resolution of 1024x768 at 8bit color or 640x480 at 16bit color. When I choose more colors (i.e. 24bit) X doesn't work at all, it just dies. What's the problem? Any suggestions, experiences, questions? I attached all files and messages I though could be relevant. Re: New Dell Inspiron 1100, video problems
Hi, I'm having the exact same problem as you do, even though I have the Inspiron 500m (bought in Germany). Same graphics chip, though. The problem is that Dell just doesn't provide the needed Video BIOS update. Intel describes the needed update here: http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/linux/graphics.htm#6 I'm currently working very hard on the Dell support (I had to get really angry until the guy accepted that I really do have a clue and know what I'm talking about). I want to know who's responsible for BIOS upgrades and pressure them into providing an update. I haven't had any success whatsoever yet, though, but I'll let you know as soon as I get new information. They just keep insisting they don't support Linux and stuff. I hope I can put some pressure on them, though. Re: New Dell Inspiron 1100, video problems
Hi Damien, this is what I already told Joe and what I'm going to tell everybody with this problem: Please go hassle Dell support. And don't use E-Mail, they'll just give you crap answers, I tried that three times. Call them up and be a REAL pain in the ass for them. Tell them you're a CS student (which I assume you are, doesn't matter if you're not), so you know what you're talking about and that you're really pissed at their bad support. Try to get through to the people that are _directly_ responsible for BIOS upgrades. And if you have their number or something, please give them to us so that we can hassle them, as well. We really, badly have to put some high pressure on Dell in this matter because there's no way their current behaviour is acceptable. Anyway, first get your exams done. Good luck. They now understood my problem, gave an exact description of my problem and told my that they won't solve it. They said look for a BIOS upgrade, maybe it'll be provided, maybe not, we can't do anything about that. Well, I got really mad at the Hotline guy, I demanded to talk to his supervisor (which he didn't let me do) and I said that they're giving Dell a bad name with this kind of 'support'. I said I know other people who have the same problem and that there has to be some way to talk to the Dell BIOS people. He claimed that he couldn't talk to them but I think that's just a lame excuse because he doens't want to go to the hassle of finding out. Well, anyway, I got so angry at them that they finally agreed to call me back on Friday and that they would try to find out whether this BIOS update will ever be available at all. No promises to solve my problem, though. "We don't support Linux, blabla." So, bottom line: Please give your country's Dell support a try. I couldn't get through, maybe you can. Re: New Dell Inspiron 1100, video problems
All right, I've found a solution. At least for the Dell Inspiron 500m, the following tool successfully changes allocated VideoRAM: http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.tar.gz The only thing you have to take care of is to put a VideoRAM line into your XFree86 config that allocates at least as much RAM as you told that tool to allocate. Tell me what your results are. Mine seems to work fine for now. (I've just gotten it to work, though.) All right, I need to get some sleep now. Kernel 2.6 + i855GM + X?
Hi, has anybody gotten Kernel 2.6 to work with X and the i855GM chipset? I'm using the drivers off of Intel's website together with XFree86 4.2 (sid) and Kernel 2.4.22-ac4 right now. Intel's drivers don't work with the 2.6 kernel. Are there any alternatives? Does XFree86 4.3 support i855GM natively? Any experiences? Thanks in advance... -- --- Magnus von Koeller --- email:[EMAIL PROTECTED] address: International University Campus 9, App. 13 D-76646 Bruchsal / Germany phone:+49-7251-700-659 mobile: +49-179-4562940 web: http://www.vonkoeller.de pgp0.pgp Description: signature

WLAN with the Linuxant driver
Hi, I'm trying to get WLAN to work on my Dell Inspiron 500m with Broadcom-based wireless adapter. I installed Linuxant's DriverLoader driver (the trial version) and the module seems to work fine. It loads into the kernel and I have successfully uploaded my Windows driver via the webinterface. iwlist scan also works, displaying the access point I want to connect to. However, I'm confused as to how I'm supposed to start this interface. I have configured eth1 (that's my wireless device) to use dhcp just like my normal net connection - as it connects to the same network. Now, I tried to just ifup eth1 but that fails. Then I specified the WEP key in interfaces and that gets set correctly. I tried setting the essid through iwconfig but that gives neither an error nor does it change anything. I'm confused - what am I supposed to do to set up a wireless connection in Debian? Hoping for advice, Magnus -- --- Magnus von Koeller --- email:[EMAIL PROTECTED] address: International University Campus 9, App. 13 D-76646 Bruchsal / Germany phone:+49-7251-700-659 mobile: +49-179-4562940 web: http://www.vonkoeller.de pgp0.pgp Description: signature

I use this: echo 0:60:60:powersave > /proc/cpufreq Immediately after that, I get this: # cat /proc/cpufreq minimum CPU frequency - maximum CPU frequency - policy CPU 0 60 kHz ( 46 %) - 60 kHz ( 46 %) - powersave But after a couple of seconds, again this: minimum CPU frequency - maximum CPU frequency - policy CPU 0 60 kHz ( 46 %) -130 kHz (100 %) - powersave And all the time, the actual frequency doesn't seem to change: # cat /proc/cpuinfo [...] model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1300MHz stepping: 5 cpu MHz : 1294.774 [...] # uname -a Linux epiphyte 2.4.22-ac4 #1 Fri Oct 24 16:09:21 CEST 2003 i686 GNU/ Linux Compiled with CONFIG_CPU_FREQ, CONFIG_X86_SPEEDSTEP_CENTRINO and some other CPU Freq options. If I disable that, it stays at the 600Mhz-600Mhz range. But still, /proc/cpuinfo always gives cpu MHz : 1294.774 So, it's not working, is it? -- --- Magnus von Koeller --- email:[EMAIL PROTECTED] address: International University Campus 9, App. 13 D-76646 Bruchsal / Germany phone:+49-7251-700-659 mobile: +49-179-4562940 web: http://www.vonkoeller.de pgpgaOQbi3sMx.pgp Description: signature
