All right, I've found a solution. At least for the Dell Inspiron 500m, the following tool successfully changes allocated VideoRAM: http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.tar.gz
The only thing you have to take care of is to put a VideoRAM line into your XFree86 config that allocates at least as much RAM as you told that tool to allocate. Tell me what your results are. Mine seems to work fine for now. (I've just gotten it to work, though.) All right, I need to get some sleep now.
