Re: problems configuring X on my Dell laptop

2005-02-25 Thread João Paulo Vanzuita
i can't see vesa configuration in your XF86Config, you say that used
dpkg-reconfigure, it creates XF86Config-4 , maybe xfree is reading your
XF86Config-4 and not XF86Config.

Hello,
I have had similar problems with Debian kernels post 2.6.5. I am
running these kernels on a IBM Thinkcenter (I think a M50). The
computer runs fine for a while after rebooting, but as soon as its
left idle for a while, the computer slows down to a crawl. After that
every keyboard or mouse click take 10-15s to process. Rebooting was so
slow that I had to do a hard reset. But kernels previous to 2.6.5 work
fine, and the 2.4 series kernels run excellent.

PLEASE HELP ME !!! GOOD PEOPLE

2005-02-25 Thread Mr. Alhaji Kamoru
From: Mr. Alhaji Kamoru.
436th Kesington Osborne Court Rd,
Sydenham SE26 5EQ
London, England.
tel.44-7040117705 (Vodafone)

As a regard I am the above named person and now undergoing a medical
treatment in London, England. I am married to Mrs. Ramota Kamoru who worked
with British Railway Commission in Chelsea England for over a decade before she
died on 5th of July in the year 2003. We were married for fifteen years without
a child. She died after a brief illness that lasted for two weeks. Before her
death she made a vow to use her wealth for the down trodden and the less
priviledged in the society. Since her death, I decided not to re-marry or get a
child outside our matrimonial home.

When my late wife was alive she deposited the sum of £10 Million (Ten Million
Pounds sterling) in a Vault with a Security/Finance House in UK. Presently,
this money is still there. Recently, my Doctor told me that I would not last
for the next 150 days due to cancer problem. Though what disturbs me most is my
stroke. Having known my condition, I decided to donate this fund to an
individual or better still a God fearing person who will utilize this money the
way I am going to instruct herein. I want an individual that will use this fund
and provide succor to poor and indigent persons, orphanages, and above all
those affected in the Tsunami in far Asia.

I understand that blessed is the hand that giveth. I took this decision because
I do not have any child that will inherit this money and my wife relatives are
not inclined to helping poor persons and I do not want my wife's hard earned
money to be misused or spent in the manner in which my late wife did not
specify. I do not want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly
manner, hence the reason for taking this bold decision. I am not afraid of
death hence I know where I am going. I know that I am going to be in the bosom
of the Almighty. I do not need any telephone communication in this regard
because of my health, and because of the presence of my wife's relatives around
me always. I do not want them to know about this development. With God all
things are possible.

As soon as I receive your reply I shall give you the contact of the
Security/Finance House in UK. I will also issue you a letter of authority that
will empower you as the original beneficiary of this fund, through my Lawyer. I
want you to always pray for me. My happiness is that I lived a life worthy of
emulation. Whosoever that wants to serve the Almighty must serve him with all
his heart and mind and soul and also in truth. Please always be prayerful all
through your life. Any delay in your reply will give me room in sourcing for an
individual for this same purpose. Please assure me that you will act according
to my specification herein. Hoping to hear from you. Thank you and may the
Almighty bless you. You may also Reply to this Mail Directly to my Lawyer:

Yours sincerely,
  Mr. Alhaji Kamoru...

Check with 'top' the average cpu usage after using the computer for a while.
What i'm trying to find is exessive cpu usage, and thus cpu heating.
Try to run the computer with out X for a while and see it the computer don't
slow down.
Run memtest for 24hours, just to be on the safe side.
I have seen something related to toshiba at the kernel compilation, but debian
stock kernel already include that. Worth a check.

good luck

Newby wireless

2005-02-25 Thread Matt Clement
Hello,

A good friend a few months ago dual-installed debian
on this here laptop.

I am now wondering about getting wireless on it.

Here's the stats:

I live in Austin, TX, USA.

I don't know much about computer navigation (a flaw
I've been told is bad for a newby with Debian).

I have a:

Netgear WG511U Double 108 Mbps Wireless Card, and a

Dell Inspiron 5150.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Clement

There are several components to the question you ask. Like are wireless
options enabled in the kernel that is installed? Are the wireless-tools
installed with an apt-get session. What driver is needed for the card
and is there a native driver for it or do you have to go to a thing like
ndiswrapper or linuxant.

You may want to do some searches on google for that card and add Linux
as a search criteria and see what people use with that card. The
important parts are the chipset on the card, whether there is a native
linux driver for it, what wireless options are enabled in the kernel on
the debian build, etc. I think its gonna take a bit of investigation on
your part to see the driver options, whether you need to recompile a
kernel to get wireless support, installing the wireless-tools, etc. I
did a basic search on google here:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=Netgear+WG511U+linux&btnG=Search
You may want to read on in the search and see how different people have
solved the problem with the card, etc. One of the first links goes into
some detail on the chipset on this particular card, what others are
trying to get it work, etc. Happens to be on Ubuntu which is a debian
derivative distribution so it may be a bit relevant.

sound problem, i810 clocking/speed too low

2005-02-25 Thread Ben
Hi All,
I a problem with my sound card, I am not sure what happened but all of a
sudden my sound is 'slow'!
dmesg shows:
Intel 810 + AC97 Audio, version 0.24, 21:43:34 Jan 21 2004
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 00:1f.5 to 64
i810: Intel ICH3 found at IO 0xe100 and 0xe000, MEM 0x and 0x,
IRQ 11
i810_audio: Audio Controller supports 6 channels.
i810_audio: Defaulting to base 2 channel mode.
i810_audio: Resetting connection 0
ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: CRY52 (Cirrus Logic CS4299 rev D)
i810_audio: AC'97 codec 0 supports AMAP, total channels = 2
i810_audio: setting clocking to 33942
if I boot up using a knoppix cd clocking is set to 44607(or thereabouts)
and sound works perfectly!

can anyone tell me how to adjust the clocking?
cheers,
ben

I don't see any difference in quality 16 vs. 24.
24bps is slower, uses more memory, so I'm using 16bps.

Yes, the same, but this is only a warning, drvier is quite stable: my
current uptime is 31 days (not continous, sometimes I use APM suspend to
disk :-) and Xserver is running all the time.
