Hello,
A good friend a few months ago dual-installed debian
on this here laptop.
I am now wondering about getting wireless on it.
Here's the stats:
I live in Austin, TX, USA.
I don't know much about computer navigation (a flaw I've been told is bad for a newby with Debian).
I have a:
Netgear WG511U Double 108 Mbps Wireless Card, and a
Dell Inspiron 5150.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely, Clement
There are several components to the question you ask. Like are wireless options enabled in the kernel that is installed? Are the wireless-tools installed with an apt-get session. What driver is needed for the card and is there a native driver for it or do you have to go to a thing like ndiswrapper or linuxant.
You may want to do some searches on google for that card and add Linux as a search criteria and see what people use with that card. The important parts are the chipset on the card, whether there is a native linux driver for it, what wireless options are enabled in the kernel on the debian build, etc. I think its gonna take a bit of investigation on your part to see the driver options, whether you need to recompile a kernel to get wireless support, installing the wireless-tools, etc. I did a basic search on google here:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=Netgear+WG511U+linux&btnG=Search
You may want to read on in the search and see how different people have solved the problem with the card, etc. One of the first links goes into some detail on the chipset on this particular card, what others are trying to get it work, etc. Happens to be on Ubuntu which is a debian derivative distribution so it may be a bit relevant.
