fam, imon question...
Hi, I've installed the fam daemon to "look" at my files when i use KDE on my debian laptop, but i read on the fam package that it uses the imon kernel modules to check whenever a file changes, or if the imon monitor isn't available it uses pooling... I've been digging :-) the oss.sgi.com site and found the imon kernel patch and applyed it to my kernel 2.4.18 (had to fix 2 files). The kernel compiles fine, the imon modules exists and loads ok, but whenever i use the fam daemon it seams that it doesn't use the imon modules... If it doesn't use the imon modules, probably it is pooling my fs... Is there any configuration needed to make fam use the imon module? My system is a Pentium3 class laptop with stable packages for woody and kernel 2.4.18 with imon + xfs patches from oss.sgi.com I've read that fam can also use the dnotify, but i can't locate it when i configure my kernel... Thanks, Paulo Lopes.

For some configurations the video card (or video bios) doesn't behave too well wrt suspending. To eliminate this, try switching to a text-mode virtual terminal first: If suspend/resuem works there, then X is your problem. PCMCIA WLAN Card not active after boot
Hi, I am running unstable, kernel 2.4.20, on a Q10 with a built in orinoco mini-pci wlan card. I have also seen the below mentioned behavior on a Sony GLX316 with a Sony WLAN card (also orinoco/lucent chip). When booting the wlan card is not recognized and so dhcpclient doesn't get any address during boot. A cardctl eject; cardctl insert does "solve" the problem. I assume there are better ways to do that ;-) What do I need to do? Cheers, Mariano

A cardctl mkamp> eject; cardctl insert does "solve" the problem. If you have the 'auto' stanza in /etc/network/interfaces for the card device (e.g. 'auto eth0') then you will see this happen. In that case, take out the auto stanza. For PCMCIA NICs you must let the PCMCIA startup script bring up the card and not the networking script. The latter processes the auto stanza, and it also runs *before* the PCMCIA script which is why you can't use 'auto.' Cheers! Shyamal
Libretto 100ct Install-Disks
Hello, I searched the net for 2 hours to find anyone who has installed a debian linux on a Libretto 100ct, just using a set of floppys. The result is, that one guy managed it but serveral guys not. So here is my question: Is there a set of floppys available to start the installation on a libretto ? The known problem is the PCMCIA-Bridge used in the libretto, that shouldn't work, after reading the first disc. There is no install discs with support for the libretto floppydrive that I know of, I solved the problem by using dos fdisk and split my disk in desired partions, and using the swap partion for temporary storage of the debian base system, and once I had everything up and running reformated that partion as a linux swap. One might make install discs if you patched a pcmcia based floppy install disc with the patch for using the pcmcia floppy drive for librettos. But I haven't tested that so I don't know if it would work.. good luck.. /Johan

Check for error messages in dmesg as well. dmesg does contain the messages from the last boot, doesn't it? In order to access dmesg I need to reboot with acpi off and don't see anything relevant in dmesg anymore, do I? I attached the syslog from boot until I hit the power off button. I inlined the acpi part below and also a message from the x-server ... It seems to me that acpi killed my screen? On a sidebar I'd like to add that num-lock does still work. Re: Toshiba Libretto freezes with X
We need some more information, specifically, does anything show up in XFree's log? tail -n 20 /var/log/XFree86.0.log [or less /var/log/XFree86.0.log for all] If, for whatever reason, you don't have this - you can start X with the following: startx > x.log 2>&1 & which will send X's output to a file x.log in your local directory [start from your homedir] which you can then analyze w/ more, less, cat, or your favorite text editor. The point of interest will likely be right at the end of the file [tail -n 20 x.log] Aside from that, it would probably be helpful to know what windowmanager and desktop environment if any, and if it happens on all windows or only specific program(s). I had a libretto 50CT for a while, ended up giving it to my brother when I upgraded to a picturebook, it's a GREAT little box - fits in your pocket (literally) but keyboard is *just* usable. Gives you serial and video out and everything, tight little machine. [little slow tho :)] -Martin N. swsusp question
Hi has anybody succedeed in using swsusp & xfs & acpi with kernel 2.4.20? I have to use ACPI because of a strange bios behavior (with apm the cpu fan gets started to late and the system crashes), and i use xfs for my root partiton. when I try to compile it with all these patches aplied, I get an error in softirq.c about PF_IOTHREAD beeing undeclared. so, does anybody now a way to use swsusp under this circumstances? thanks in advance yours, Albert Dengg

But I haven't tested that so I don't know if it would work.. I have to admit that the way I've dealt with all my libretto-using pals and clients so far was to ( -=* VERY CAREFFULLY *-- ) take open the keyboard area, take out the drive, and mount it in another system, then perform magic. It has been a while since I explicitly dealt with a 100 so I don't remember if it was the model that refused to go on with life if it didn't have room to stash a hibernation space. Not that you mind :D In case of all boot disasters, make sure that your first volume still uses DOS, contains your dos-based diagnostics, and has loadlin. There are instructions at the tomsrtbt site for using loadlin to boot into his stuff - get that set up, and you'll have a linux rescue environment available regardless of that crazy pcmcia controller. Base off of harddisk space is a very nice compromise and much faster for people who don't feel inclined to get out photonlights and jewler's screwdrivers. Lastly, if you do want to take your libretto apart, or any smaller-model laptop, I recommend a clean white sheet over your work area, Little screws are much easier to spot on this. The ends of a cloth can be pulled up, too. Second best is a light desk drawer, so the parts stay inside it, but beware of especially tiny parts (springs, and teeny tiny washers) trying to get stuck in corners. * Heather Stern * star@ many places... * Starshine Technical Services -*- 800 938 4078

Re: Mouse cursor corrupted on "BAT LOW" warning
I found a workaround: Switching from a hardware cursor to a software cursor. /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 Section "Device" Driver "ati" Option "SWCursor" The file /usr/share/doc/xserver-xfree86/README.ati.gz (ver. 2001 April 10), section 5.10, cautions that a software cursor is "much slower", however I vaguely remember reading some other source that said the difference was minor. Experience will tell. If it is a performance hit, I'll need to look into solving the hardware cursor problem. Is the bug *necessarily* with the graphics adapter's firmware? Or is it more likely in the driver? i.e. Should I first pursue looking into a firmware upgrade or looking into the xserver driver? PCMCIA WLAN Card not active after boot
Hi, I am running unstable, kernel 2.4.20, on a Q10 with a built in orinoco mini-pci wlan card. I have also seen the below mentioned behavior on a Sony GLX316 with a Sony WLAN card (also orinoco/lucent chip). When booting the wlan card is not recognized and so dhcpclient doesn't get any address during boot. A cardctl eject; cardctl insert does "solve" the problem. I assume there are better ways to do that ;-) What do I need to do? Cheers, Mariano -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

"mkamp" == mkamp <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: mkamp> When booting the wlan card is not recognized and so mkamp> dhcpclient doesn't get any address during boot.
But I haven't tested that so I don't know if it would work.. good luck.. /Johan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have to use ACPI because of a strange bios behavior (with apm the cpu fan gets started to late and the system crashes), and i use xfs for my root partiton. when I try to compile it with all these patches aplied, I get an error in softirq.c about PF_IOTHREAD beeing undeclared. so, does anybody now a way to use swsusp under this circumstances? thanks in advance yours, Albert Dengg -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". * Starshine Technical Services -*- 800 938 4078 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Or is it more likely in the driver? i.e. Should I first pursue looking into a firmware upgrade or looking into the xserver driver? fam, imon question...
For some configurations the video card (or video bios) doesn't behave too well wrt suspending. To eliminate this, try switching to a text-mode virtual terminal first: If suspend/resuem works there, then X is your problem.
