Bug#275098: konqueror: Bug caused by broken mime information
Package: konqueror Version: 4:3.4.3-3 Followup-For: Bug #275098 Hi, I've spotted the same issue. After some guessing I finally found out that Konqueror complained about an unknown mime type x-crossover-jpeg. This was caused by crossover office, which had created this mime type for QuickTime. Solution: In CrossOver office setup, remove the association with jpeg etc. which has been created during installation of QuickTime. Maybe there are other third party apps that cause similar issues with KDE. Bug#347190: f-prot-installer's check-updates fix

Yes, but next time a new version of f-prot is downloaded and installed, things will break again. Therefore the recommended solution is to install either f-prot-installer 0.5.14.sarge.2.volatile.2 which is in the semi-official Debian volatile archive (in case you don't have it yet in your sources.list, please add deb http://volatile.debian.net/debian-volatile sarge/volatile main contrib non-free and run apt-get update) Alternatively you can use version 0.5.21 which is pending upload by my sponsor. In the meantime it is available at my webspace: deb http://www.rohr.org/johannes/debian/ unstable/ The difference between both versions is very small. Basically additional debconf translations. Bug#312218: kernel-patch-suspend2: When resuming, fails to mount root fs
Package: kernel-patch-suspend2 Version: 2.1.8.9-1 Severity: normal Tags: experimental Hi and thanks for packaging swsups2 for Debian! I've compiled a custom kernel (not the one running at the time of writing!) with swsusp2. I've largely adopted Debian's .config from one of the latest 2.6.11 kernels with few modifications (i.e. deselected prehistoric CD-ROM support and OSS as well as compiled in VESA frame buffer support.) I have NOT changed Debian's heavily modularized design, since I assumed that a Debianized kernel patch was prepared for that. Now, putting the box to sleep works, whіle resuming fails. Bug#311941: kernel-patch-debian-2.6.11: Package description says "patch does not apply to pristine sources", which doesn't seem to be the case

This means that at the moment there is no way to obtain a debian kernel source tree short of downloading the kernel-source-2.*.orig.tar.gz. For bandwidth impaired people like me this is quite unfortunate. When I already have a linux-*.tar.bz2 on a CD from a computer magazine, I'm happy about not having to download an additional 40 megs (takes about two hours here!), especially when 40 K of diffs would also do the job. So could the kernel team consider providing such diffs? (Doesn't have to be as a .deb) Thanks for your good work! Bug#309932: gnome-system-tools: boot-admin is DANGEROUS
Package: gnome-system-tools Version: 1.2.0-1 Severity: normal Tags: experimental Boot-admin seems to be /very/ experimental. Even though the doc claims to support GNU/Hurd style booting, boot-admin fails to recognize an existing GNU/Hurd boot stanza. The properties dialogue provides only space for a single module. GNU/Hurd needs two of them and both modules need to be passed arguments, else Hurd will not boot. BTW: Other multiboot compliant OSes like VSTa or Syllable use even more modules than Hurd. So boot-admin should support any number of modules plus individual command line parameters for each of them. Furthermore, boot-admin fails to recognize certain chainloader commands: I boot ReactOS through title ReactOS root (hd0,0) makeactive chainloader /bootsect.ros # This is where ReactOS puts its bootsector if #it detects an installed NT/XP savedefault boot-admin seems to know only the frequently used "chainloader +1" and fails to understand "chainloader /somefile". Consequently, clicking on "Properties" and then on OK. will destroy the configuration, replacing it with: title ReactOS rootnoverify (hd0,0) makeactive chainloader +1 Note that boot-admin has also silently omitted the "savedefault" line. Further, boot-admin has completely fucked up the VSTa and GNU/Hurd boot configuration. This was before: title Debian GNU/Hurd 0.3 pre savedefault root (hd0,8) kernel /boot/gnumach.gz root=device:hd0s9 module /hurd/ext2fs.static --multiboot-command-line=${kernel-command-line} --host-priv-port=${host-port} --device-master-port=${device-port} --exec-server-task=${exec-task} -T typed ${root} $(task-create) $(task-resume) module /lib/ld.so.1 /hurd/exec $(exec-task=task-create) This after: title Debian GNU/Hurd 0.3 pre root (hd0,8) kernel /boot/gnumach.gz root=device:hd0s9 module /hurd/ext2fs.static This was before: title VSTa 1.6.8 savedefault root (hd0,0) kernel /vsta/boot/vsta module /vsta/boot/cons module /vsta/boot/namer module /vsta/boot/wd d0:readp module /vsta/boot/dos -d //disk/wd:wd0_dos0 -n fs/root module /vsta/boot/init This after: title VSTa 1.6.8 root (hd0,0) kernel /vsta/boot/vsta module /vsta/boot/cons Please not that I did NOT touch the boot configs for those two OS in boot-admin. I simply clicked on "properties" and then chose "cancel". However, when you click on O.K. in the main menu, boot-admin will apparantly rewrite the whole menu.lst, regardless of whether you actually modified anything. Fortunately it did not destroy those bits before ### BEGIN AUTOMATIC KERNELS LIST I.e. the comments that are needed to make Debian's update-grub command work were left intact. However, all comments following ### END AUTOMATIC KERNELS LIST were silently deleted. Well, it its current shape this tool is /dangerous/. Ð don't know if it is realistic to expect the upstream developers to implement the full command syntax that grub offers. If they choose not to do so, they should at least try to make their tool stay away from entries that it does not understand. If it encounters such, it should at least WARN before doing something potentially dangerous like throwing aways existing command lines, giving full details about what it intends to do. Bug#307942: apt-get autoclean removes valid cache members
Package: apt Version: 0.5.28.1 Severity: important apt-get autoclean removes valid cache members Hi, this is actually a replay of archived bug #180395. I have just run apt-get autoclean, which blew away 279 packages (fortunately I had a backup). Of these, most were _NOT_ unavailable, as apt-cache policy [package] reveals. I ran the last autoclean and full dist-upgrade just 4 days ago. Now dist-upgrade wants to upgrade 69 packages, so I would expect not more than 69 packages to be unavailable and therefore valid candidates for removal. I have observed similar behaviour before and since I'm behind a 64 K dialup, my cache is /precious/ to me. Please let me know what I can do to help remedy this! Bug#314802: gtk2-engines-gtk-qt: Please use GTK2_RC_FILES
Package: gtk2-engines-gtk-qt Version: 0.60-1 Severity: wishlist At present, setting Gtk style and font in the KDE control center generates a ~/.gtkrc-2.0. This overrides GNOME's own way of setting the widget style, which is trough gnome-settings-daemon. For a person using both desktops, this is an annoyance. If ~/.gtrc-2.0 exists, using gnome-theme-manager will result in crashes of panel applets and the gnome-panel itself. An easy way to avoid this is through using an alternative gtkrc. Gtk+-2 apps will use a gtkrc provided though $GTK2_RC_FILES. So you might want to use e.g. $HOME/.gtkrc-2.0-kde instead of the current default in order to avoid conflicts with GNOME. Of course, the environment variable has to be set sometime during the startup process, e.g. in /usr/bin/startkde. Package: gnome-utils Version: 2.10.1-2 Severity: wishlist Hi, due to the switch to the xdg menu standard both the GNOME and the KDE menus are absolutely bloated if both desktops are installed. As far as I see, everything in gnome-utils has their equivalent in KDE providing identical functionality (eg gnome-dictionary vs. kdict). So you might want to add DontShowIn=KDE to the .desktop files belonging to individual utilities. Bug#314795: Please split xmms kicker applet into separate package
retitle 314795 Please split xmms panel applet into separate package thanks Hi, I see that you have previously turned down a request to lower the dependency on xmms. Therefore I'd like to propose a different approach, which has already been used by many maintainers to limit excessive dependencies: The xmms panel applet could be separated into a package "kicker-applets-extras", which is suggested by kicker-applets. Bug#289887: epiphany-browser: Epiphany printing completely broken
Package: epiphany-browser Version: 1.6.3-2 Followup-For: Bug #289887 Hi, I have to confirm what the original submitter has reported: Printing from epiphany is completely broken. Epiphany reports that the printer wasn't found. No console output. Console output at startup is: (epiphany:16270): Pango-CRITICAL **: pango_color_parse: assertion `spec != NULL' failed (epiphany:16270): Pango-CRITICAL **: pango_color_parse: assertion `spec != NULL' failed ** (epiphany:16270): WARNING **: EphyDbus failed to connect to the session D-BUS: Unable to determine the address of the message bus After removing xprint, printing from epiphany is completely disabled. I thought that fallback ps printing should still be possible given that the alleged security risk related to this, IIRC, turned out to be mere rumors. Anyway, printing from firefox works just fine. So does printing from mozilla. Bug#309932: boot-admin should not be in unstable
severity 309332 grave retitle 309332 boot-admin should not be in unstable thanks Hi, I'm surprised that you uploaded g-s-t 1.2.0 to unstable with boot-admin enabled. As I reported before, its grasp of grub's command syntax is very poor, resulting in the most complete breakage of my menu.lst you could possibly imagine. I would say that this is much more severe than the bug that caused you to disable services-admin. At the same time it is completely unaware of Debian's way of auto-configuring the kernels list through update-grub, resulting in the removal of the ## END AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST line which is required for update-grub to function properly. I understand that generating the auto kernels list through parsing magic comments, as done by update-grub, is kind of a hack, heck it is the current standard in Debian and its offshoots and therefore should not be broken. Bug#318002: RFA: f-prot-installer -- F-Prot(tm) Antivirus installer package
Package: wnpp Severity: normal I request an adopter for the f-prot-installer package. My time is /very/ limited and I think the package needs some love. Please contact me if you feel motivated to adopt it. The package description is: F-Prot(tm) for Workstations is a powerful command-line virus scanner. It can be run stand-alone or utilized by other packages such as mailscanner or amavis. . Since the license does not explicitely permit redistribution, this package doesn't contain the actual software, but downloads it from the vendor's FTP site and installs it for you. . The installer has been tested with F-Prot(tm) 4.0.0 and does not work for older versions. . This package also comes with a maintenance script to keep your F-Prot(tm) installation up-to-date. Furthermore a cron script for automatic virus definition updates is included. . If you install F-Prot for Workstations(tm), please take into account the rather restrictive license terms. . Package: xemacs21-basesupport Version: 2005.03.07-1 Severity: grave Justification: causes serious data loss Hi, there is few I can report. I just installed xemacs21-gnome-mule, typed M-x vm RET, then CPU load went up to 100%. When I looked what was happening to my mail I got the creeps: While eating all CPU time, XEmacs/VM would truncate each mbox file it could get hold of to zero bytes. Fortunately I had a backup of this morning. However, when after 20 minutes or so I finally killed XEmacs, I had lost one day's mail. This should not happen, by any means.. There seem to be no backups created by VM around anywhere, as far as I see. A mailer couldn't behave worse than VM just did. Bug#318020: xemacs21-basesupport: vm corrupts my complete mail directory
severity 318020 important thanks Am Mittwoch, den 13.07.2005, 14:08 +0900 schrieb OHURA Makoto: First of all, I finally found the place to which vm had moved all my mail: It was all in $HOME/INBOX. So, after all, no data has been lost, meaning this bug probably no longer qualifies for severity "grave". However, it is still quite annoying because vm has merged mail from many different mailboxes into a single fat INBOX, even though I did not customize it to do so (there is nothing in init.el or custom.el that applies to vm). Strangely, vm seems to have sucked in all the mailboxes for which I have a rule in ~/.procmailrc. IIRC, earlier versions of VM behaved more or less like mutt, balsa or pine when accessing mbox files, i.e. they would not have shoved tons of mail around without asking. Maybe I just did not correctly understand the concepts of this mail client. Anyway, this behaviour is unexpected to me. > First of all, I can't reproduce this problem in my box, the > latest sid environment. Please tell me the followings; > > 1. Any plan to get seamonkey in Etch instead? I understand that a re-branded version called "IceApe" will be included. I suppose that locale packagers will also have to remove all trademarked Mozilla logos in order to be DFSG-free. I'm not really interested in that job, given that I have stopped using the browser suite quite a while ago. > >But, ok, if you really need it, I can build the package with 1.7.13 > >later tonight. > That would be really nice, yes, it would give me the time to make my > wife familiar with Thunderbird/Firefox (or wait for Seamonkey) :-) You can get a preliminary package from deb http://home.arcor.de/j.rohr/debian/ unstable/ Please report anything unusual. Bug#297999: openoffice.org-gnomevfs: Does not accept GNOME-VFS URIs
Package: openoffice.org-gnomevfs Version: 1.1.3-7 Severity: important Hello, I thought that after installing this package, openoffice.org would accept GNOME-VFS URIs just as any GNOME program. Bug#296258: freemind: Integration into GNOME/KDE
Package: freemind Version: 0.7.1-6 Severity: wishlist Hi and thanks for bringing freemind into Debian, the only useful Java program I know... ;-) It would be nice if you would integrate freemind with the freedesktop.org mime standard, i.e. register a mime type for freemind's mind maps and register freemind itself as handler. This needs two steps, basically: Install the attached freemind.desktop into /usr/share/applications and freemind.xml into /usr/share/mime/packages >From postinst, you need to run (if they exist) '/usr/bin/update-desktop-database' and '/usr/bin/update-mime-database /usr/share/mime' . After that, clicking a .mm file in nautilus or konqueror should open them with freemind, and freemind itself should appear in the Office menu category. To have a menu icon, I have extracted FreeMindWindowIcon.png from freemind.jar, converted it to xpm and copied the result to /usr/share/pixmaps. Bug#407800: seahorse-agent still crashes
Package: seahorse Version: 0.9.92-1 Followup-For: Bug #407800 I'm not seeing any changes in the experimental package. seahorse-agent crashes on startup, just as before. The only fix is, to remove it from the system, because even if I disable session gpg-agent, evolution will launch gpg-agent as soon as it is started, thus causing seahorse-agent to crash with 100% reproducibility. A nasty side effect is, that ssh connections will not work, when seahorse-agent has crashed, because the SSH_AGENT_PID and SSH_AUTH_SOCK evironment variables still point to the crashed seahorse process, thus, ssh hangs, waiting for the agent, which is no longer available. A conflict with gnupg-agent would be an ugly "solution": kde depends on kleopatra, which depends on gnupg-agent. Thus, as soon as seahorse becomes official part of gnome, both metapackages would be incompatible. Package: epiphany-extensions Version: 2.18.0-1 Severity: normal Hi, the epilicious extension, which syncs Epiphany's bookmarks with del.icio.us does not work on Debian. First, there are broken paths in /usr/lib/epiphany/2.18/extensions/epilicious.py: In line 28 and 31, you find sys.path.append('/opt/gnome-2.18/lib/epiphany/2.18/extensions') and libepilicious.GLADE_DIR = '/opt/gnome-2.18/share/epiphany-extensions/glade' Second, even after fixing that, the extension does not work on debian as expection (I got it to work on Ubuntu feisty, though). The synchronisation dialogue reports failure and the console says: /usr/lib/epiphany/2.18/extensions/epilicious.py:108: SyntaxWarning: import * only allowed at module level def _do_sync(): StopIteration Syntax error somewhere? Apparently, the gtk icon cache was outdated. Running "gtk-update-icon-cache -f" on a number of directories below /usr/share/icons fixed it. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#415220: symbol gnome-panel-force-quit not found
Debian does not use an icon cache for /usr/share/icons; either you build software locally, or you installed Ubuntu packages, or there's a bug in a Debian package. I did not install Ubuntu packages. All my GNOME packages are from Debian, mostly from experimental. However, it looks like several package do call gtk-update-icon-cache from postinst, including gnome-themes, gnome-themes-extras, gnome-accessibility-themes and gtk2-engines-spherecrystal. So if this is an official policy, some developers do not adhere to it. Thanks, Johannes -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? 2007/3/17, Loïc Minier <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > So if this is an official policy, some developers do not adhere to it. It's only a temporary situation until we find a way to do the transition, but it's post-etch anyway. But please note that the above packages only create caches for sub-directories -- this is ok. The shared directory /usr/share/icons itself is not. Well, the issue I stumbled into was related to outdated caches in the subdirectories. There is no cache file in the directory itself. However, thanks for all the good work and for your response. Johannes

Bug#364730: mutt: Still segfaults over each write operation.
Package: mutt Version: 1.5.13-1 Followup-For: Bug #364730 Dear mutt maintainers, this bug which I reported six months ago is still there. Mutt still crashes each time it tries to write a mailbox file. Someone tagged the bug "moreinfo". I would be more than happy to provide additional information, if you give me advise what in particular is required. Debugging output has already been provided. What else can I say? The problem started when I replaced uw-imapd with dovecot to access my mail with thunderbird and others. Mutt accesses the mail files directly. Dovecot (package "dovecot-imapd") is an IMAP server. Whether or not it is running, doesn't seem to make any difference. mutt crashes either way. The reason why I mentioned dovecot-imapd is, that, IIRC, the crashes started occurring as soon as I replaced uw-imapd with dovecot-imapd (for reasons of better performance). However, they don't seem to go away again after removing the package. > What are > the permissions? How large are these mboxes? > The permissions of /var/mail is drwxrwsr-x 2 root mail 4,0K 2006-10-16 11:19 /var/mail/ The permission of my inbox (/var/mail/$USER) is: -rw-rw 1 jr mail Current size of my inbox: 36M Permissions of ~/Mail: drwx-- 11 jr jr 4096 2006-10-16 11:21 /home/jr/Mail The permissions of all files in ~/Mail are set to 600, I have a number of subdirectories in ~/Mail, which are all set to 700. However, the issue can be reproduced on other local accounts, too. Therefore it does not seem to be related to any of my mail files. I even moved /var/mail/$USER out of the way and sent myself a single test message. Trying to delete it in mutt led to the same deplorable result as before. I even installed Ubuntu on a separate partition in order to get mutt working. There I had the same result: I mounted my home partition and started reading mail with mutt. At first all seemed fine. Later, I installed dovecot-imapd and since then, mutt has kept crashing. > Provide some way in which someone else can try to re-construct the crash. > So far no one else on this bug-list has managed. > The only hint I can give would be to install the package dovecot-imapd, probably do some mail reading over IMAP (with thunderbird, evolution or whatever) and then fire up mutt again and see what happens. Just tried that myself: Result: ATM I have two computers with three GNU/Linux installs (two Debian, one Ubuntu) on all of which mutt is completely unusable. Now, I've copied all mail and mutt's config file over to a third box (again Ubuntu) on which the bug so far has not occured. I am really, really clueless and increasingly desperate. I had the hope that someone from the developer community would be able to make sense of the backtrace that I had attached to the bug report. Some additional info is also available from the Ubuntu bug report that I created some days ago. https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/mutt/+bug/65543 Thanks, Johannes -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#364730: [SOLVED] Re: mutt: Still segfaults over each write operation.
I've now found the trigger! It is completely unrelated to dovecot-imapd. What made mutt crash all the time, was the contents of LD_PRELOAD. I had /usr/lib/libaoss.so (package alsa-oss) preloaded all the time in order to enable OSS dependent apps to use ALSA dmix. Unsetting LD_PRELOAD fixed it. Please try out and see if you can reproduce (install alsa-oss and run "aoss mutt"). Thanks, Johannes signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Well, the point is that I had LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libaoss.so in my .bashrc for some time, in an attempt to make OSS applications "just work". Obviously this has a number of unwanted side effects. Bug#739420: evolution: fails to find address book
Package: evolution Version: 3.8.5-2+b1 Severity: normal In Evolution, all address books are suddenly empty. Evolution seems to be confused about the address book locations: "Dieses Adressbuch konnte nicht geöffnet werden. Bitte überprüfen Sie, ob der Pfad /home/jr/.local/share/evolution/addressbook/system-address-book existiert und Sie darauf zugreifen dürfen." So this is where it now looks for the default address book, however, its actual location is .local/share/evolution/addressbook/system/contacts.db Also, all my remote address books (google, owncloud) are shown as empty, and a timeout is reported. Could this be caused between some miscommunication between evolution-data-server and a recently updated library? Also gnome-contacts fails to show any contacts now, I suspect for the same reason. Thanks for the quick response & your instructions! However, using this method, the screen is not locked on resume, which obviously is a security issue. Is there any trick to work around this as well? Bug#726877: linux-image-3.11-1-amd64: kernel oops caused by smsusb
Package: src:linux Version: 3.11.5-1 Severity: normal as per below kernel log, the smsusb module, which I use for a Hauppauge DVB-T USB adapter is not working properly with the latest kernel. While initially connecting it and starting mythtv kind of works, after a while it stops and errors like the one below appear. Until Kernel 3.9, the module worked in an acceptable manner, then bug #719623 made using the device impossible and now, the debianized kernel is making trouble again. I have been using a custom built kernel with the fix for bug #719623 applied, based on the source for linux-image-3.11-trunk from experiemental, where I have seen no such errors. Bug#727304: kdepim-runtime: cannot add owncloud addressbook or calendar if shared calendars exist in owncloud
Package: kdepim-runtime Version: 4:4.10.5-2 Severity: normal I am trying to set up an owncloud dav resource, and while everything seems to work, the calendar or adddressbook do not show up in kaddressbook resp. korganizer. I am following the ususal steps: Add a new akonadi resource of type "DAV" Enter credentials Select "owncloud‶ as server type Enter the address of my server Test the connection -> Test is passed successfully Click on "fertigstellen" (complete/ ready, or whatever it says in the English gui) After that I see an akonadi resource called "Owncloud", when I click "edit", I see two protocols listed - CalDAV and CardDAV, with the respective URLs. When I click "edit", I notice that "Detected collections" ("Entdeckte Sammlungen") is empty. On clicking "fetch", my default addressbook / calendar are detected, together with several shared addressbooks / calendars of other users. Finally, I click "ok" several times to exit the akonadi configuration. But when I fire up kaddressbook or korganizer, the owncloud addressbook / calendar fails to show up. Also when I return to the akonadi configuration, the list of detected collections is empty again. So while everything first appears to work just fine, settings don't appear to be saved. I have removed almost my entire KDE config and emptied my entire Akondadi database, but to no avail. This misbehaviour seems this has started when I have begun to add users to the owncloud server and sharing calendars between users. I have just tested by un-sharing the calendars again, after which things are functioning as they should: Both addressbooks and calendars are added to Korganizer / Kaddressbook as expected. However, Kdepim definitely should be fixed to accommodate shared calendars in owncloud.
