Bug#733920: src:speechd-up: hardcoded build dependency on libdotconf1.0 which will transition soon

2014-01-02 Thread Paul Gevers
Package: src:speechd-up
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Speechd-up has a build dependency on libdotconf1.0. As soon as we get
permission from the release managers [1] we are going to transition that
library to libdotconf0. So real soon now, speechd-up needs an updated
upload to fix the build dependency (which is not needed as far as I can
tell, as it is pulled in via the libdotconf-dev package.)

I will take care of the upload if there are no other items to be fixed
by this upload. Some information on how to test speechd-up would be nice.

Paul

Bug#733921: apt-listchanges: Wrong dependency on dpkg-dev

2014-01-02 Thread Guillem Jover
Source: apt-listchanges
Source-Version: 2.85.12
Severity: important

Hi!

The current dependency on dpkg-dev is inappropriate, as the underlaying
dpkg-architecture usage is not correct. If you just need the host
architecture you can use «dpkg --print-architecture». In this case
that's not what you need, you need the specific package architecture,
as the system might be configured as multi-arch. So you'd use something
like the following «dpkg-deb -f foo.deb Architecture».

Thanks,
Guillem

Hi Paul,

I would very much welcome an NMU, as long as you send me a debdiff of
the changes, so that I can apply it to the current Git of mysqmail.

Thanks,

The package should be in good shape and should only need some minor updates.
More recent upstream version is also available.

If you are interested in sponsoring this package, I can do the work during
the next few days.

If you want to co-maintain the package, feel free to do the work yourself,
but please let me know before doing it.

Bests,

Bug#733300: [RFR] templates://kinect-audio-setup/{templates}

2014-01-02 Thread Christian PERRIER
Please find, for review, the debconf templates and packages descriptions for
the kinect-audio-setup source package.

This review will last from Thursday, January 02, 2014 to Sunday, January 12,
2014.

Please send reviews as unified diffs (diff -u) against the original
files. Comments about your proposed changes will be appreciated.

Your review should be sent as an answer to this mail.

When appropriate, I will send intermediate requests for review, with
"[RFRn]" (n>=2) as a subject tag.

When we will reach a consensus, I send a "Last Chance For
Comments" mail with "[LCFC]" as a subject tag.

Finally, a summary will be sent to the review bug report,
and a mail will be sent to this list with "[BTS]" as a subject tag.

I always found the acronym EULA a bit cryptic, particularly to
non-English users. So, let's give translators an opporunity to
translate it to their language (the acronym, not the EULA text, of
course).

Same for SDK.

Let's mark the URL as non-translatable.

By the way, have you noticed that this URL redirects one to the main

Let's make it more clear that not accepting the EULA is a "problem"

Again, make acronyms more explicit

And avoid using a hard-formatted paragraph as second paragraph but
make it a simple sentence.

Bug#729624: nsd: General update after the debconf review process

2014-01-02 Thread Christian PERRIER
Dear Debian maintainer,

On Tuesday, November 19, 2013, I sent you a notification about the beginning of
a review
action on debconf templates for nsd.

Then, I sent you a bug report with rewritten templates and announcing
the beginning of the second phase of this action: call for translation
updates.

Translators have been working hard and here is now the result of their efforts.

Please consider using it EVEN if you committed files to your
development tree as long as they were reported.

The attached tarball contains:

- debian/changelog with the list of changes
- debian/control with rewrites of packages' descriptions
- debian/ with all the rewritten templates file(s)
- debian/po/*.po with all PO files (existing ones and new ones)

As said, please use *at least* the PO files as provided here,
preferrably over those sent by translators in their bug reports. All
of them have been checked and reformatted. In some cases, formatting
errors have been corrected.

The patch.rfr file contains a patch for the templates and control
file(s) alone.

Please note that this patch applies to the templates and control
file(s) of your package as of Tuesday, November 19, 2013. If your package was
updated
in the meantime, I may have updated my reference copybut I also
may have missed that. This is indeed why I suggested you do not
modified such files while the review process was running,
remember..:-)

It is now safe to upload a new package version with these changes.

Please notify me of your intents with regards to this.

There is of course no hurry to update your package but feel free to
contact me in case you would need sponsoring or any other action to
fix this.

Package: x11-xkb-utils

Hi,

I did a dist-upgrade a couple of days ago and since then I'm not able to
swap the left win and alt keys anymore. I've always been using the
following command:

---
setxkbmap -layout de,de -variant neo, basic -option -option
grp:ctrls_toggle,altwin:swap_lalt_lwin
---

The keyboard layout/variant part works great, however the
swap_lalt_lwin seems to do nothing now.

Cheers, Linus

This is done now. Can you please verify whether the problem you
reported exists also with this version and if yes please provide an
example which enables simple verification?

Kind regards

Could you list the features you don’t think we’ll need in the list from
the wiki?
  * Reliable service management through cgroups
  * Logging features
  * Multi-seat
  * Defense-in-depth security features
  * Centralized service startup and monitoring
  * timedated/hostnamed/…
  * D-Bus API for service control
  * Transparent virtual environment support
  * Watchdog
  * Initramfs support
  * Introspection and debugging
  * Configuration-less system
  * User sessions

I’m curious as to what features you consider not relevant for Debian.

Is it feasible?

It would be really really awesome, if you could implement it!
Please let me know.

I chose to read that as "debsign will move from devscripts to src:dpkg"
and felt happier. I actually don't care if debsign is reimplemented, but
I'd prefer if the Debian package development brain space was not further
complicated with more command line tools to learn[1], so I suggest that
the existing name and arguments are preserved.

Bug#733925: wicd-curses crashes when connected to AP with accents in its ESSID

2014-01-02 Thread Emmanuel Revah

Dear Maintainer,

I'm not sure if this is wicd-curses or perhaps some python issue. Sorry in
advance.

wicd-curses works fine, everyday everywhere, except at this cafe that uses an
accent in it's ESSID. I can connect to it without issues, but once connected
wicd-curses just crashes and outputs:

The ESSID is "somethingcafé" which shows up as "somethingcaf\xC3\xA9" under
iwconfig.

I have not tried with wicd-gtk/kde.

I've been to this café a while ago and didn't ecounter this issue, I had this
network saved. Today I could list all the networks, wicd-curses crashes once it
has obtained an IP from this AP.

Bug#733926: backintime: returns 0 even if backup fails

2014-01-02 Thread Julian Gilbey
Package: backintime
Version: 1.0.10-1

backintime failed:

erdos:~ $ backintime --backup-job

Oops. So I wasn't told about this by cron, and I didn't notice that I
hadn't had any backups for a month. Now I'll go investigate the cause
of the failure, but there should have been a non-zero return state.

This, of course, may have been fixed in a later version. If it's
easy, I'll look into doing an NMU if that is of help to you and the
general community.

Bug#714296: dia: pdf export broken for text elements, example attached

2014-01-02 Thread Arno Töll
Hello,

I can confirm this serious problem in dia. See the files attached which
contain a simple dia input file and the corresponding PNG/PDF exports.
Both are unreadable.

This makes dia pretty useless. The problem applies to all versions in
Testing/Unstable, (Old-)Stable however is not affected.

I'd feel very uncomfortable doing that, because it would mean, at least:

 * introducing a core dpkg tool within a different namespace
 * having to parse a devscripts specific configuration file
 * having to support DAK specific .commands signing
 * having to support remote signing

IMO having debsign become a thiner wrapper around this new tool would
be the goal, as it would simplify its code, people not wanting to use
debsign could use the dpkg tool directly, and people not wanting to
learn new stuff could keep using the wrapper w/o regressions.

Thanks,
Guillem

Ouch, I'm stupid! I didn't really see the final '-amd64' in the path

was injecting. It took me a while to understand it.

I'll put new packages in the mail in a moment. Thanks, Aaron.

Dear Maintainer,

* start librecad

Do this repeatedly until you get a segfault

segfaults)

I think the backtrace without debugging infos isn't very usefull but here it

Bug#731300: E: [autospawn] core-util.c: Failed to create secure directory (/run/user/0/pulse: Permission denied

2014-01-02 Thread Ernest Adrogué
Package: pulseaudio
Version: 4.0-6+b1
Followup-For: Bug #731300

Dear Maintainer,

This does not look like pulseaudio-specific.

I see the same bug as the OP. Pulseaudio starts normally, at some point it
crashes and refuses to restart complaining it can't create a directory in
/run/user/0/ which is owned by root.

However my .xsession-errors file indicates that dconf is also having the
same problem:

(x-www-browser:12505): dconf-CRITICAL **: unable to create directory
'/run/user/0/dconf': S’ha denegat el permís. dconf will not work properly.

Regards.

processed by anacron.

So please add anacron as an alternative dependency.

Hello again, and excuse for another post !

I find in this blog post from Adobe, that only the 11.2 and newer versions of

But you can maintain the 10.3 too and put a warning saying that it hasn't
security support !!.

anacron only recommends cron. exim4 is the only package preventing me

Bug#727708: init system other points, and conclusion

2014-01-02 Thread Josselin Mouette

This change would have happened sooner or later. The fact that logind
used to work without systemd as init was purely coincidental, since
logind was designed as an integral part of systemd from the very
beginning (particularly because of the cgroups design). This specific
change might has been triggered by anticipation for a kernel change (a
change that still doesn’t exist), but if not for cgroups, it would have
been for another reason.

Let’s imagine for a minute that the systemd developers would have
listened to this request and put the cgroup manager outside of PID 1.

Since systemd starts up everything it spawns using cgroups, the very
first thing it would need to do would be to start up the cgroups manager
at boot time, before anything else. For systems with systemd in the
initramfs, the cgroups manager needs to be in the initramfs too.

A new protocol would be introduced for PID 1 to talk to the cgroups
manager, and every time a process is spawned, every time a query comes
from an interface, PID 1 would talk to the cgroups manager through this
protocol. Other processes would talk to PID 1 through one protocol, and
to the cgroups manager through another one, having to gather the
information afterwards, unable to obtain it in an atomic way.

What, exactly, would be the benefit of such a situation for systemd
users?

Oh but of course we can cripple our packages by disabling systemd
support and live without user sessions. We can always do that. That was
exactly my point.

And maybe after upstart, you intend to try forcing Mir upon us when
GNOME packages introduce a dependency on Wayland?

You’re acting like a good salesperson, but I’m afraid your product is
inferior. These advantages cannot be provided by upstart. Just like for
system services, the available features for user sessions are not
comparable.

> I think the current Debian GNOME team has a not-undeserved reputation for

This criticism is totally undeserved. The GNOME team is involved with
GNOME upstream and understands where that stated direction comes from.
And usually agrees with it, but not every time: we have maintained large
sets of patches in Debian because of disagreements with the way
PulseAudio and GDM were managed upstream.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that it is hard for developers to
respect the TC’s decisions when we see disrespectful sentences like the
one above from some of its members.

It strikes me that in general, the init system discussion has been
polluted by hateful comments directed towards the GNOME, freedesktop and
systemd projects and the Debian developers involved, by people who don’t
even try to understand the technicalities behind. Too many people have
let this happen, and too many developers have been hurt and demotivated.
Do not expect a TC decision that would rely on political arguments
instead of technical ones to improve that situation.

> If the team demonstrated they were open to

You don’t just need volunteers to dig patches in the Ubuntu patch
tracker and email them. You need volunteers to maintain the resulting
packages.

In other words, if you disagree with the ways the GNOME team maintains
their packages, and appeal to the TC in order to change these ways,
you’d better discuss with all current maintainers whether they are ready
to abide by your rules, and have a proposal for what to put in the
Uploaders: field of the resulting packages. I am pretty sure the same
holds for a systemd package that

thanks for your offer but this won't be necessary at the moment, aspcud
upstream is already working on migrating aspcud to gringo 4.

anacron pulls in cron anyway, so what is this change going to buy us?

We should, however, possibly relax the cron | fcron dependency to a

Bug#732729: libfreetype6: Please upgrade to upstream 2.5.2

2014-01-02 Thread Fabian Greffrath
Control: severity -1 important

Seconded, please update to this version ASAP. I have been bitten by this
bug, which is fixed in 2.5.2:

- Improving the display of some broken TrueType fonts introduced a
bug that made FreeType crash on some popular (but not fully
conformant) fonts like `ahronbd.ttf'.

I had ahronbd.ttf in my ~/.fonts directory and libfreetype instantly
charshed when starting a new gnome-session, taking gnome-session-daemon
and others with it, rendering the whole graphical session defect. This
makes it possible to sabotage someone else's system by silently dropping
that font file in their $HOME directory.

Other users besides trac-wikiprint may want to use xhtml2pdf, though :)

I propose another way out: replace the xhtml2pdf script with this:

  #!/usr/bin/python
  from sx.pisa3 import command
  command()

it works and it does not depend on python-pkg-resources. It skips
dependency checking, but as long as the launcher script is packaged
together with the library, the dependency checks are not needed.

This way the command works without the need of adding any dependency to
python-pisa.

$ echo $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR

when it should be /run/user/1000.

Same request as Laurent,
could you upload a recent package (like the final 0.9 release)

Probably none of the two packages should contain these files. I don't
think it's a good idea for any package to ship a python module with the
name "test" without any namespace qualification. If the test should
really be shipped as part of the package, they should probably live in
bootstrapform.tests and django-taggit.test or similar.

I am fine with this analysis, but it seems most recent (Ubuntu?) work
has been done in the the git repro in the a11y realm [0]. Maybe somebody
(Samuel?) could move the repro to the tts location? Until then, I like
to tag this orphan bug of speech-dispatcher into a ITA, but I don't
object at all to the tts team taking it over. But because dotconf 1.3 is
in experimental now, I like to try to get speech-dispatcher 0.8 running
in Debian/experimental as well. If I understand correctly, several
dependent packages need to be fixed [1]. Seems like a transition slot
for that is warranted as well.

Now that LilyPond 2.18.0, what are your plans for packaging it for
Debian? Would you like some help doing so? I am keen to start
using this version of LilyPond in the approved Debian way!

I think this is more related to some KDE-thing than matplotlib. Can
you try to investigate with some of the PyQT maintainers and/or seek
guidance in some users support forum?

Hi,

I have recently been in touch with upstream (Stefan de Konink) and have been
assisting with a few bugs in Cherokee.

I'd be interested in helping with the packaging since I will need to maintain
updated Cherokee packages for myself for a Wheezy server anyway.

Are you interested in co-maintaining the package in Sid?

Bug#705460: 2.39.0 available

2014-01-02 Thread Javier Barroso
I had problem with 2.2 debian version (I am not sure, but https did not work).

With latest ide there are modules that are not availables in 2.2
version, so export to webdriver script does not work out of the box.

I build a new 2.39.0 package with the following proccedure (and now I
can test https pages with selenium again and use export function from
IDE):

$ dpkg-source python-selenium
$ wget https://pypi.python.org/packages/source/s/selenium/selenium-2.39.0.tar.gz
$ cd python-selen*
$ uupdate ../selenium-2.39.0.tar.gz
$ cp README.md CREDITS.txt ../python-selenium-2.39.0
$ cd ../python-selenium-2.39.0
$ dpkg-commit
$ # add_docs.patch (name of patch)
$ dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc

Just curious, which component of selenium is not free ?

In your comment at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=552099#24 is not very
obvious. At home page selenium says it has Apache 2 license which is
DFSG compatible

Bug#723573: xterm occasionally forgets BackSpace translation

2014-01-02 Thread Zefram
retitle 723573 usual translations not applied when focus is on scrollbar
thanks

I've managed to reliably reproduce the problem. When the mouse pointer
is located on the xterm's scrollbar, showing the up-and-down-arrow mouse
cursor, none of the translations in the "XTerm.vt100.translations"
resource get applied. This doesn't only affect backspace, it also
affects some scrolling keys that I've set up in the same resource.
The translations are applied normally when the mouse pointer is in the
text part of the xterm, showing the I-beam mouse cursor, and when the
mouse pointer is on the window frame or titlebar, showing a mouse cursor
determined by the window manager. Toggling the backspace option fixed
the problem merely by virtue of moving the mouse off the scrollbar.

The man page contains an oblique note about applying different
translations in the scrollbar context. (It talks about changing mouse
button behaviour, not keys.) It shows a resource name pattern of
"*VT100.scrollbar.translations". Based on that, I've tried setting
a resource under the name "XTerm.vt100.scrollbar.translations", and
it turns out that the scrollbar context obeys translations that are
placed there. As a permanent change, I've changed my resource settings
to specify the translations under a key of "XTerm.vt100*translations"
instead of "XTerm.vt100.translations". Empirically this fixes the issue:
the translations now apply when focus is on the scrollbar as well as in
the other focus states.

So it may possibly be a bug that, in the absence of an overriding
XTerm.vt100.scrollbar.translations, XTerm.vt100.translations isn't applied
when focus is on the scrollbar. Don't know whether that's intentional.
But it is certainly a bug that the names by which translation resources
are looked up are inadequately documented. The man page describes
"translations" only as a resource for the "vt100" widget, not for the
"scrollbar" widget (except for the implication of the example in a
different section of the doc), and has no mention of translations being
applied differently depending on focus.

Bug#733737: [Debichem-devel] Bug#733737: Add python3-cclib package

2014-01-02 Thread Karol M. Langner
Hi Daniel,

We also recently moved cclib to git and github: https://github.com/cclib/cclib,
so the upstream repository used will need an update eventually.

More importantly, earlier this year -- after releasing 1.1 -- we switched to
Python3,
and the master branch is now intended only for Python3. There is a python2
branch,
although I'm not sure if all new developments will get ported there.

At system startup via the init script (or systemd service or upstart
job) or using systemd timers (tough this isn't shipped with the anacron
package).

systemd itself ships systemd-tmpfiles-clean.timer which runs a daily
job, similar to how anacron itself works:

Bug#733934: libmikmatch-ocaml-dev: an attempt to compile a program using the provided library fails

2014-01-02 Thread Matej Kosik
Package: libmikmatch-ocaml-dev
Version: 1.0.6-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

I was using "mikmatch" library on Debian stable (Wheezy) and with GODI.
I have found out that in Debian testing (Jessie), the provided library
somehow cannot be used. The attempt to compile a program that tries to
link it fails.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

 - I took a fresh Debian testing system.
 - I installed some packages I wanted to use:

apt-get install libbatteries-ocaml-dev libsexplib-camlp4-dev
libmikmatch-ocaml-dev libfindlib-ocaml-dev libxml-light-ocaml-dev
libbin-prot-camlp4-dev

 - and did this:

touch main.ml
ocamlfind c -c -syntax camlp4o -package mikmatch_pcre main.ml

   * What was the outcome of this action?

 - ocamlfind terminated with exit status 1
 - ocamlfind did not generate executable binary
 - ocamlfind printed the following:

So this is actually a patch making systemd migration easier. Thanks
for clarifying that.

It is indeed technically trivial, but I invite you to review your own
responses to the binfmt-support thread to see why it isn't socially
trivial.

To put it another way, it will help to be careful with pronouns. The
"you" in your sentence necessarily doesn't refer to me (as the person
objecting to the presence of certain features in this case), but to the
Debian systemd maintainers.

It's also not, in general, "trivial" to do something if it involves a
massive argument, even if the patch would end up being a one-liner.
Social costs are costs too.

Perhaps this is the fundamental disagreement. I do not necessarily
consider compatibility as an end in itself. Where Debian is already
better than other distributions, we should remain better, not stick to a
lowest common denominator for the sake of compatibility.

I'm specifically referring here to cases where Debian already has a
superior implementation of a given feature. And to answer the strawman
that several people have directed my way, I obviously have no objection
to enabling features in the case where they're the best implementation
available. But it looks as though the default is to rank compatibility
above quality of behaviour; that is certainly the impression I get from
the e-mails I've received.

I have just uploaded the NMU version 1.0.34-0.1 to the 5-day delayed
queue.

Here is the changelog entry:

backintime (1.0.34-0.1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Non-maintainer upload
  * New upstream release (Closes: #707198, #730341, #727213)
  * Remove portable-configure patch, as now applied upstream; extend
desktop-su patch to include kde4
  * Moved documentation from /usr/share/doc/backintime to
/usr/share/doc/backintime-common, as there is no "backintime" binary
package
  * Updated debian/watch to match new repository filenames
  * Might also close some of the other outstanding bugs; these need to be
triaged

This is a font that I am going to package under the umbrella of the pkg-fonts
team. It is a drop-in replacement for the
Cambria font shipped with Microsoft Windows 7. It is part of the Google
Crosextra fonts which are meant as a supplement
to the Google Croscore fonts, which are drop-in replacements for Arial, Courier
New and Times New Roman (similar to the
Liberation fonts, but not yet packaged for Debian). It is accompanied by the
Carlito font, which is a drop-in replacement for
Calibri, but is released under a different license (OFL 1.1). I am currently
indifferent if I should file a separate ITP for it.

I don't see any sign of upstream styling the product as
"KinectForWindows" (beyond the URL being alloneword); it's always
"Kinect for Windows".

It seems a shame that users need to open a browser to read this EULA
when you're already fetching stuff for them, but I suppose it's not as
if there's any hope you could cram the text into a debconf dialogue.

Foolishly, perhaps, I've tracked down and looked at the actual EULA
(http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/kinectforwindows/develop/sdk-eula.aspx).
It doesn't license using the downloaded files in order to run the
Kinect hardware under Linux; only "to design, develop, and test your
programs that run specifically on a Microsoft Windows operating
system". Asking end-users to agree to it seems a bit pointless.

(And let's do some re-wrapping.)

In the control file:

> Description: helpers to setup audio input from the Microsoft Kinect sensor

The noun is "setup", but the verb is separable ("set it up") and
therefore written with a space as "to set up". Or since that's
getting a bit long, we could turn it into a noun-pile as:

Description: Microsoft Kinect audio sensor setup helpers

> When the Kinect is first plugged in the USB port it shows up as

Why do we need to specify the port?

> a generic USB device with a bulk endpoint; after uploading a certain

Should that be "a bulk transfer endpoint"? And either way, is there
really any need to mention anything this technical?

> firmware a reenumeration takes place and a USB Audio Class device
> becomes available.

"A certain firmware" is treating a mass noun as a count noun, and
"uploading" is confusing (especially given that the only subject the
sentence has had so far is the Kinect device).

I'm not sure about this, but isn't the device stack "reenumeration"
technically a separate event from the reset that makes the device
change class? And it should probably at least be hyphenated...

So:
When the Kinect is first plugged in, it shows up as a generic USB device
with a bulk endpoint; after the appropriate firmware is installed, a
re-enumeration takes place and a USB Audio Class device becomes available.

Say "from the Internet" (since it won't let you fetch a copy from
http://server.local), and rearrange slightly to reduce repetition and
avoid initial lowercase:

Since the firmware is not redistributable, kinect-audio-setup provides
tools to download it from the Internet at installation time, and sets up
udev rules to call the firmware loader when the device is plugged in to
finally get the USB Audio Class device.

The main problem remaining here is the fact it isn't true.

You're welcome. I really like the idea to use Travis CI.

Can you document in a comment or docstring why you ignore certain
issues and what these issues are? This should help readers to better
understand what the test does and more importantly what it ignores.
Furthermore do you plan to reduce the number of ignores in the
future? If so you should add a TODO for yourself.

2) tests/test_pep8.py
Can you use instead of 'self.assertEqual(res, 0)' a better fail

3) tests/test_pyflakes.py
You don't need the 'from __future__ import print_function' import
with Python 3.

Those are fixed in my git branch now, thanks!

Thanks. Could you include the detailed messages for the error codes?

E126 continuation line over-indented for hanging indent
E127 continuation line over-indented for visual indent

IMHO those should be fixed too because they increase the readability of

I prefer to sort dependencies alphabetically.

I have no opinion about this :) I don't really mind either way.

Especially for packages with many dependencies I think it helps to check
if a dependency is already there or missing. But given that one doesn't
look often into debian/control I can really understand that there is no
strong opinion on it. ;-)

5) .travis.yml
I would really like to see a rather lengthy comment in the beginning
of the YAML file to explain what purpose it serves and what it does.
I also think you should give a link here and that you should explain
what should happen after Trusty. Maybe it would be even better to
use SID instead of Trusty.

6) .travis.yml
Why do you run './debian/rules binary' and not 'dpkg-buildpackage'?

7) .travis.yml
Why not also ensure here that Lintian and if possible piuparts have
no issues with the newly built package?

Good points, I added a explaination to the top now that hopefully
addresses the points.

I renamed the added sources.list entry as its misleading. In my branch
its using "distro-info --stable" to get test latest python3.3 and
apt/libapt. Using sid here is probably a bit too fragile, the chroots
of the travis-ci.org are ubuntu based. But I would certainly love to
see a travis-ci instance that is debian based.

I changed the "debian/rules binary" in my branch now to be
"./debian/rules build-arch". This will build and run the tests. We
can't use dpkg-buildpackage currently as its using fakeroot and the
tests (iirc in the test_auth.py code) also use fakeroot and nesting
is not possible AFAIK. But I do like the idea of building the deb and
doing additional checks like lintian/piuparts.

Thanks for the good explanation. ^^
BTW: Don't you need a '-q' for 'sudo apt-get install build-essential
$(gdebi -q --apt-line ./debian/control)', too?

Cheers and happy new year!
  Michael

Oh yeah. Happy new year!

Bug#652459: initramfs-tools: [patch] Please support mounting of /usr in the initramfs

This patchset will continue to allow you to have /usr on NFS and/or
MD/LVM. However, it will require you to use an initramfs to mount
/usr as a separate filesystem. /usr on NFS is fairly pointless
though--just have the whole rootfs (including /usr) on NFS and be
done with it.

If there are combinations of local/NFS which aren't catered for,
e.g. local / and NFS /usr then we can look at fixing that. I
think I tested all these combinations back when I wrote the
patchset, but my memory isn't great.

This patchset is unrelated to the init system; it will need minor
changes to util-linux mount and sysvinit to avoid mounting /usr in
mountall.

It just needs doing. But it requires coordinated uploads of
  initramfs-tools
  sysvinit
  util-linux
to get all the bits in place. lamont was going to upload a
new util-linux to unstable in December but it hasn't happened
yet. I was going to upload a test version of all three to
experimental for testing, which I can look at doing this
weekend.

The patch series includes the /etc bits in separate patches. These
can just be ignored if not wanted; there is no further work required
from that point of view, I think. Given that they won't be used by
default and are harmless, but do add interesting new capabilities,
I would like to see them used though.

Bug#491547: web server policy requires /var/www, not in FHS

2014-01-02 Thread Arno Töll
Hi,

even more so a discussion on debian-devel [1] came to the conclusion
that /var/www as a document root is security-wise a bad default for web
servers.

Therefore, we, Apache maintainers, decided to change the default
document root to /var/www/html (#730372). This might be seen as a policy
violation as of §11.5, but we do not violate the FHS as this directory
does not exist there.

I'm not sure about the state of the FHS when this bug was filed, but to
date /srv exists per FHS as a place to put organization-local files,
e.g. document roots which is a replacement to /var/www _to users_. We,
as a maintainer cannot use /srv straight though to avoid information
leaks. Moreover, we must neither assume any organization-local directory
structure below /srv.

Please clarify this ambiguity in the policy.

Thanks for looking at this! Note, in case it helps and I haven't
already mentioned it, that base-passwd is now revision-controlled using
git
(http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=users/cjwatson/base-passwd.git); I
mention that since I only uploaded the change of Vcs-* fields yesterday.

It's a pretty thin layer over the debconf protocol. That sounds right.

Indeed. (It would also be possible to reuse a smaller number of
questions and forcibly reset them, but I think that's much less good
than dynamically registering questions for each thing that might have a
different answer.)

This seems reasonable.

I'd probably go with mapping to "_". Just be careful to sanitise input,
as some of the data comes from the current system state and not
necessarily from {passwd, group}.master; I think it's fairly crazy to set
a system user's home directory to something containing a space, say, but
it's possible and it shouldn't cause update-passwd to break the debconf
protocol if the sysadmin has done that.

Agreed. That probably also implies that there's no need to reset that
question's seen flag.

Right. I wouldn't actually expect people to use the debconf protocol in
that case.

No, it's not. I just want to get rid of cron which I don't need on my
desktop system. Running anacron jobs at startup is enough anyway as I
restart it daily so it doesn't matter to me if someone does more
integration with systemd or not.

Bug#733940: ntp: CVE-2013-5211

2014-01-02 Thread Moritz Muehlenhoff
Package: ntp
Severity: important
Tags: security

This was assigned CVE-2013-5211:
https://cert.litnet.lt/en/docs/ntp-distributed-reflection-dos-attacks
http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/hackers-spend-christmas-break-launching-large-scale-ntp-reflection-attacks

Upstream ripped out monlist in favour of mrulist:
http://bugs.ntp.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1531
http://bugs.ntp.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1532

The default configuration in Debian uses "noquery" and thus doesn't allow
monlist:

# By default, exchange time with everybody, but don't allow configuration.
restrict -4 default kod notrap nomodify nopeer noquery
restrict -6 default kod notrap nomodify nopeer noquery

For unstable we should update to 4.2.7. What's your suggesttion on this for
stable?

We could
- Provide 4.2.7 for stable-security (or backport the changes if not too
  intrusive)
- Ignore this for stable-security and offer 4.2.7 in backports.debian.org for
those sites which run a public NTP server
- Ignore this altogether since it doesn't affect the standard configuration and
operators of large public NTP servers most definitely have updated to 4.2.7
  already or deployed other workarounds.

Cheers,
Moritz

Bug#729540: Packaged (WORKSFORME) open-vm-tools-9.4.0-1280544, perhaps it helps

2014-01-02 Thread Mihai Limbasan

Hi there,

Ran into the same issue, so I packaged open-vm-tools-9.4.0-1280544 from
upstream based on the sid package for 9.2.3. Works just fine for me in
Workstation 10.0.1 with linux-image-3.12-1-amd64. Did *not* test Shared
Folders (i.e. vmhgfs) which I don't care about since it has sucked for
years.

If someone needs it, you can find the source at
http://deb.limbasan.ro/sid/pool/main/o/open-vm-tools/open-vm-tools_9.4.0-1280544-1.dsc
(there are also amd64 binaries, but I wouldn't run binaries provided by
Some Random Person Off The Internet.)

Not particularly well-versed in Debian packaging policy so I'm sure it
can be improved significantly.

Apart from the obvious version number change, the changes required were
as follows (detailed in the changelog as well):

- Removed 0004-vmblock-vmhgfs-compat-3_10.patch from the patch series,
it's no longer required.
- Altered dh_auto_configure invocation to include Debian's procps
library name (CUSTOM_PROCPS_NAME=procps as documented in configure.ac)
- Altered dh_auto_configure invocation to avoid gcc erroring out on
deprecated glib function declarations
(CFLAGS=-Wno-deprecated-declarations). I'm sure this violates some
policies, but upstream has clearly indicated in bug 122 at
http://sourceforge.net/p/open-vm-tools/tracker/122/ that they won't fix
this (they need to support older glib versions, and they don't want to
litter the code with ifdefs.) Nate Muench provided a patch there if the
CFLAGS changes are inacceptable.

Hope this helps someone.

Mihai

Bug#727708: init system discussion status

2014-01-02 Thread Ian Jackson
So we know where Colin, Steve, Russ and I stand on the main question.
If we want to make a decision soon we need to start to thrash out the
details so that we have something concrete to vote on.

It would be helpful to know how far along the other TC members are.
So:

Andreas, Bdale, Don, Keith: please let us know what you're thinking,
and what more information/discussion would be useful.

FAOD I don't expect all the other TC members to read the whole
discussion, which is very extensive. Reading the primary statements
by the other TC members who have reported so far is probably helpful.

Given the politicisation of the dispute, and its very high status, I
think it's important to have as many of the TC voting as possible.

Ian.

Bug#733944: zathura: please implement a window-resize-open option

2014-01-02 Thread Francesco Poli (wintermute)
Package: zathura
Version: 0.2.6-1
Severity: wishlist

Hello,
I am testing zathura as a possible replacement for my current PDF viewer
of choice (xpdf, which is now in trouble [1][2]).

[1] http://packages.qa.debian.org/x/xpdf/news/20131208T163914Z.html
[2] http://bugs.debian.org/727070

It seems to me that zathura is a really nice program: thanks a lot
for maintaining its Debian package and for contributing to its upstream
development!

I have a feature request: I think it would be really useful, if there
were an option to tell zathura to automatically resize the window
width or height whenever a document is loaded.
Proposed name and description (for the man page) follow:

  window-resize-open
Causes the program window to be automatically resized if a document
is loaded. Possible options are "none" (no resizing is performed),
"width" (the window width is changed in order to honor the document
page aspect ratio with respect to the current window height, which
stays unchanged), and "height" (the aspect ratio is honored by
changing the window height and keeping the width unchanged).

  · Value type: String

  · Default value: none

With this new feature, it would be possible to put

  set window-resize-open "width"

in ~/.config/zathura/zathurarc and obtain the following behavior:

  • when zathura is started, its window would have the height and
width set with the window-height and window-width options

  • as soon as a document is loaded (that is to say: immediately,
if a file to be opened was provided on the command line, or anyway
whenever the user issues the open command), the window width
is resized (while keeping the window height unaltered) so that
the aspect ratio of the viewing area is exactly equal to the
document page aspect ratio

I hope this feature can be implemented.
Please do so and/or forward my bug report upstream.

Thanks for your time!
Bye.

Bug#733945: zathura: please implement a pages-prefetch option

2014-01-02 Thread Francesco Poli (wintermute)
Package: zathura
Version: 0.2.6-1
Severity: wishlist

Hello again,
I thought of another feature that it would be really great to have in
zathura: there should be an option to set a number of pages to
prefetch into the page cache.
Proposed name and description (for the man page) follow:

  pages-prefetch
Defines the number N of pages (after and before the currently visible
one) that will be prefetched into the page cache. This ensures that
the page cache will always contain at least the currently visible
page, the next N pages, and the previous N pages. Values larger than
(page-cache-size - 1)/2 will be reset to this theoretical maximum.

  · Value type: Integer

  · Default value: 1

With this new feature, it would be possible to get rid of the rendering
delay that causes an unpleasant short blanking/flicker when the user
steps pages forward or backward (for instance, when showing a PDF
presentation...).

I hope this is feasible.
Please implement this feature and/or forward my bug report upstream.

Thanks again for your time!
Bye.

Bug#733946: zathura: is there a way to disable continuous view?

2014-01-02 Thread Francesco Poli (wintermute)
Package: zathura
Version: 0.2.6-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi there (again)!
A little question I haven't been able to find an answer to in the
man pages: is there a way to disable the continuous view mode in
zathura?

I mean: zathura by default displays the document as a continuous
sequence of pages separated by gaps (having a size defined by the
page-padding option).
This is nice in some cases, but not really what some users want in
other cases.

It would be useful if there were a command to switch to a more
"classical" single-page view, where only one page (or two or more pages,
if dual page view is active) is (are) shown at a time. Scrolling commands
would then let the user scroll the currently visible page(s)
until the bottom (or top) of the page(s) is reached; at that point,
one further scrolling command in the same direction would jump
to the top (or bottom) portion of the next (or previous) page(s).

Ideally, there would be a key binding to toggle between continuous
view and single-page view and an option to define which mode should
be used when a document is loaded.
This would be somewhat similar to the d key (→ toggle dual page view)
and the pages-per-row option.

I hope this is not too hard to implement.
Could you do so and/or forward my feature request upstream?

Once again, thanks a lot for your time!
Bye.
