Unfortunately it's kind of hard to determine what will work if you have only one laptop, so community feedback helps a lot. Thanks for reporting! Is there any chance to obtain the old working binary package? As I said I think I could try to compare the difference and thus find out the relevant part. If you give me a hint how I could obtain the sources of 0.109-1 I might be helpful. Please try setting: SUSPEND_METHODS="acpi-support" in /etc/default/acpi-support. That should do the trick on 0.109-3. BTW, is there *any* chance that acpi-support might be responsible that my internal *and* external battery broke at the very same moment? Not even the control LEDs on the batteries show any live. I don't think this has anything to do with acpi-support. We only do keyboard translations and suspend, and pretty much nothing with batteries. If anything, this is due to kernel ACPI battery support. Bug#486078: ssl-cert: Too hastily written debconf nonte contains trailing spaces
Package: ssl-cert Version: 1.0.20 Severity: normal (this is not minor because it will interfere with translators wanting to update their work) The debconf note that was added in the latest upload of ssl-cert unfortunately contains trailing spaces in some lines in the original templates file. The consequence are double spaces in strings. You'll then get updates by translators but if you fix the trailing spaces problem, you'll fuzzy translations and then need a call for translations again, etc, etc. To handle this more gently, I propose that *I* handle a general update for you and send you the result at the end of the translation update round, as a patch (or directly in your VCS if you prefer). -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.24-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages ssl-cert depends on: ii adduser 3.108 add and remove users and groups ii debconf [debconf-2.0]1.5.22 Debian configuration management sy ii openssl 0.9.8g-10.1 Secure Socket Layer (SSL) binary a ii openssl-blacklist0.3.2 list of blacklisted OpenSSL RSA ke ssl-cert recommends no packages. -- debconf information: make-ssl-cert/vulnerable_prng: make-ssl-cert/title: make-ssl-cert/ouname: Direction de la qualité des moules-frites make-ssl-cert/hostname: localhost make-ssl-cert/organisationname: Ministère de la Culture du Mali make-ssl-cert/statename: Valais make-ssl-cert/localityname: Montréal make-ssl-cert/countryname: FR make-ssl-cert/email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". The first obvious thing would be to ensure you use the proper includes, which means you need, at some point, to use pkgconfig --cflags libxul-embedding. The second thing I would do is ensure it works properly if you build with pkg-config --libs libxul instead of libxul-embedding. When testing this setup, make sure you set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9, as it is necessary with what is called the dependent glue (which is what you get with libxul.pc). Once you have things working with this setup, you can switch to libxul-embedding, which requires some additional changes, but we'll see then. Bug#486081: ssl-cert: Debconf abuse: is there *really* a need to stop installation to tell users about certificate replacement?
Package: ssl-cert Version: 1.0.20 Severity: normal Critical level debconf notes should be kept for things that users *must absolutely see*. The text of the note you added in the last release of the package says thatthe note can be ignored if one does not know what it is about. It means that the package will handle the certificate rempalcement gently. So I really see no reason to interrupt all upgrades (including etch->lenny upgrades?) for this. Bug#486079: ssl-cert: [INTL:fr] French debconf templates translation update
Package: ssl-cert Version: N/A Severity: wishlist Tags: patch l10n Please find attached the french debconf templates update, proofread by the debian-l10n-french mailing list contributors. If you do not already use it, you might consider using the "podebconf-report-po" utility, which helps warning translators about changes when you modify some debconf templates in your packages. The usual policy when using it is sending a warning to translators when you plan to upload a version of your package with debconf templates changes (even typo corrections). Then leave about one week for them to update their files (several translation teams have a QA process which requires time). podebconf-report-po will take care of sending the translators the needed material as well as getting the translators adresses from the PO files. All you have to do is just using the utility..:-) Example use (from your package build tree): $ podebconf-report-po This will go through debian/po/*.po files, find those needing an update, extract the translators data from these files and prepare a mail to send to these translators (you can also use the "--languageteam" switch to also mail the mail addresses listed in "Language-Team" field). You can also use this utility to request for new translations: $ podebconf-report-po --call This will send a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with all the needed information and material for new translators to add new languages to your supported languages. If you apply this policy, please forget about these remarks, of courseThis message is generic..:-) -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.24-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash # Translation of ssl-cert debconf templates to French # Copyright (C) 2001-2008 French Debian l10n team <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> # This file is distributed under the same license as the ssl-cert package. # # Christian Perrier <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, 2008. # Nicolas Bertolissio <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 2001-2007 msgid "" msgstr "" "Project-Id-Version: \n" "Report-Msgid-Bugs-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]" "POT-Creation-Date: 2008-06-13 09:20+0200\n" "PO-Revision-Date: 2008-06-13 09:21+0200\n" "Last-Translator: Christian Perrier <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>\n" "Language-Team: French <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>\n" "MIME-Version: 1.0\n" "Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8\n" "Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit\n" "X-Generator: KBabel 1.11.4\n" #. Bug#485747: bind9: fails to start due to capability problems
Hi, I did some investigation. strace bind9 ends with this: capset(0x20071026, 0, {CAP_DAC_READ_SEARCH|CAP_SETGID|CAP_SETUID|CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE|CAP_SYS_CHROOT|CAP_SYS_RESOURCE, CAP_DAC_READ_SEARCH|CAP_SETGID|CAP_SETUID|CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE|CAP_SYS_CHROOT|CAP_SYS_RESOURCE, 0}) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument) futex(0x38bf04f5c0, 0x81 /* FUTEX_??? */, 2147483647) = 0 write(2, "named: ", 7) = 7 write(2, "syscall(capset) failed: Invalid "..., 111) = 111 write(2, "\n", 1) = 1 exit_group(1) = ? If I try to emulate the above using capsh --caps='cap_dac_read_search,cap_setgid,cap_setuid,cap_net_bind_service,cap_sys_chroot,cap_sys_resource=ep' -- -c uname strace gives this: capset(0x19980330, 0, {CAP_DAC_READ_SEARCH|CAP_SETGID|CAP_SETUID|CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE|CAP_SYS_CHROOT|CAP_SYS_RESOURCE, CAP_DAC_READ_SEARCH|CAP_SETGID|CAP_SETUID|CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE|CAP_SYS_CHROOT|CAP_SYS_RESOURCE, 0}) = 0 The passed capability list is the same, so the problem seems to lie in the first argument of capset() that strace does not decode. Bug#486082: epiphany-gecko: abnormal CPU load
Package: epiphany-gecko Severity: important I noticed that since the upgrade on monday 9th or tuesday 10th, the CPU load has reached very high values. As the platform is a laptop, this mean high temperature, fan always on, and the like. I have around ten tabs opened, all with static content, the only dynamic is the homepage at fr.news.yahoo.com Under epiphany, CPU speed is 1Ghz (maximum allowed), and CPU percentage for epiphany around 75-80 %, a few % for Xorg, the rest being anecdotic, system not idle at all. Under mozilla (iceape-browser/sid uptodate 1.1.9-5), CPU speed is 500MHz (minimum speed), CPU percentage for this task mostly absent from the list, with occasional appearances at 20 %. System idle at 90%. The only activated extension for both is flashblock. In epiphany, closing the tab with fr.news.yahoo.com helps a bit, but not that much. Could you please check ? This was how the security upgrades for the ssl issue were handled and I see no reason to deviate in ssl-cert. It is likely that the ssl-cert update will be in a etch point release before lenny release (but openssl-blacklist needs to be uploaded to stable first). Therefore etch->lenny upgrades are not an issue. For people who actually use the certificate, it is important to see the message. Otherwise they might (or at least should) think that there was a MITM attack in progress. But not all users of ssl-cert will actually use the default certificate, hence the last line of the text. Bug#225888: [Pkg-gnupg-maint] Bug#225888: closed by Daniel Leidert <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (gnupg: slight improvement of docs regarding IDEA)
Hi! Let me state it again: There is no IDEA support for GnuPG - there has never been any support - the reason to write GnuPG was due to the IDEA and RSA patents. Even after 2010 (or whatever the patent stuff says) there will be no IDEA support - IDEA is OBSOLETE, it is an old cipher algorithm with a 64 blocksize which is not sufficient for todays amounts of data. OpenPGP provides a preferences system which takes care that nobody with a sane mind will use IDEA for any encryption. Granted: There are probably a few people out there with IDEA encrypted files - but those folks still have a copy of pgp-2 and know about the IDEA problems. If they want to drop pgp-2 they should just re-encrypt their stuff. And actually they should really drop use pgp-2 because it requires the use of MD5 and thus all public keys can't be relied upon anymore if the Web of Trust is used. FWIW, there is an idea.c file floating somewhere around and there is some limited support in the code to use it. That file stems from my first experiments with gpg (at that time called g10) and was never intended to go wth gpg, proper - it was and is reasearch only. There is no need to include any support for it in Debian. I habe been threatened by MediaCrypt in the past to buy and announce an IDEA license for gpg. I am not willing to give them any chance to threaten the users of GnuPG by stating that we have any kind of real support for IDEA. And thus the only change to published information might be to entirely remove all mentioning of IDEA. Shalom-Salam, Werner -- Die Gedanken sind frei. While I think using backslash in echo is OK with dash, and thus doesn't really block dash release goal, I've removed it to satisfy Debian Policy. The backslash in the message is just to emphasize that the mentioned 'documentclass' is a LaTeX command. But without it, the meaning is still the same. So, fixing this by removing it should be fine. Bug#485747: bind9: fails to start due to capability problems
Hi, I've rebuilt the bind9 package to use libcap2 instead of the hand-crafted syscall invocation and that made the problem go away. So adding libcap2-dev to the Build-Depends: should be enough to fix this bug. I'm happy to apply a patch. Looking at the source, replacing the echo with a printf would suffice. Given that the parameters are simply being echoed, a simple s/echo/printf/ should be safe enough; for the sake of robustness 'printf "share is %s\\%s" "$service" "$cdcmd"' would be "better". Indeed I did not notice that they are huge. IMO you can drop TABHZ and TABKJ, they are unused. The former contains Chinese characters, maybe the latter contains kanjis. Other files seem to be used by 2d viewers, maybe they can be dropped too. FYI you can test DRAWEXE this way: $ DRAWEXE Draw[1]> Draw[2]> pload ALL [lots of lines] Draw[3]> source /usr/share/opencascade/6.2/src/DrawResources/VisualizationDemo.tcl You should add --disable-debug to configure flags, AFAICT this is how official releases are built. Without this flag, many debugging messages are printed, which may confuse users, and exceptions handling differs and may crash applications. Bug#486091: horizontal mouse wheel has inverted back/forward behaviour
Package: xulrunner-1.9 Version: 1.9~rc2-2 Severity: normal Hello, I just upgraded epiphany to 2.22.2-2, built against xulrunner-1.9; and horizontal mouse wheel (with a synaptic touchpad) has inverted back and forward actions; it used to go back when moving from right to left, going back now requires moving from left to right. This is the action that can be set with 2 as a value to the appropriate mousewheel.horizscroll.*.action key, in about:config. iceweasel (3.0~rc2-1) exhibits the same behaviour. Closes: #444146. There are several questions raised by this upload: ## DP: Diff between 4.0.3 and CVS HEAD (checked out on 2008/06/01). -) Was this pull from upstream cvs discussed with upstream developers? I am asking this explicitly with respect to the stability of that snapshot and the upcoming lenny release. -) How much of a help is this new feature with respect to the regressions it introduces (both already known one (#484647, #485532, #485925) and maybe others not yet noticed)? I took a look at the CVS, last commit was last year february. That can mean several things, but most propably: Unfinished work lying around which can mean several stranger breakages, otherwise I would have expected a release in the meantime. So I really would like to know how much you've invested into scanning those ~5k lines about their stability and release saveness for the upcoming lenny release? screen unfortunately is not a joe random package and I rather like to raise the concerns now instead of stumbling into more serious problems later. Bug#483179: reopen 483179, PTS: please do *not* link to Ubuntu Launchpad bugs page
reopen 483179 retitle 483179 PTS: please *do not* link to Ubuntu Launchpad bugs page thanks Hi, After Sandro Tosi filed this bug in a well-meaning way, several people disagreed in this same bug report about the usefulness of this. Even after this, the feature was implemented in the BTS, I do not like it either, and raised this point in IRC, after some discussion I got an answer I did not like at all: 09:40 ana: please stop ranting 09:41 ana: and accept my decision as PTS maintainer Partially my fault because I did raise this in IRC instead of the bug report, there the "ranting" part. Now, here I'm showing my disagreement in the BTS. About buxy's second sentence, it is not at all a way to "finish" a discussion. Accept my disagreement (and other's disgreement) as Debian Developers. I do care about what happens in whatever part of Debian on my packages, but not at what happens in derivated distros. If somebody for $ANY derivative distro find a bug that affects to Debian, this person should report in the BTS or notify to Debian maintainers, whatever that works fine for both parts. IMHO, the PTS is the Packaging Tracking System *in Debian*. Then you are only considering one Debian derivative when Debian has thousands, and we can not track all of them and not all of them have a easy tracking system, but there are some big ones besides Ubuntu that could be considered as well. For the KDE people a big derivative distro that uses KDE would be more interesting to track, for science people a derivative distro that is focused to science tools, and so on. But not, aparently Ubuntu is the only derivative that matters. So please, remove the link to the ubuntu launchpad bugs and since some people think tracking derivated distros is interesting, make a new page, that can be visited optionally (or just forget about for who is not interested), where we can track whatever derivated distro people care about. Call it Debian Ecosystem Packaging Tracking System or something like that. You can start with Ubuntu there and if people is interested in another distros they will submit their patches, and if another distros are interested in being tracked, they will make it to be easy tracked. Heck! it could even track another distros, not only derivatives and being a first step for sharing patches across distributions, idea that is around without any implementation. I'm not so much worried about the size (they could go into a -data package), as the redundancy with other packages (Debian seems to like to avoid this) and copyright/freeness. Regarding the former, there are no files with these names in Debian, so it might take some work to convert OCC's functions to use Debian's files. On the latter, they are probably distributable, but definitely not free as in software. Hmm. I see why you would want this, of course, but it was my impression that the init scripts are supposed to exit 0. If you can point me to a bit of Debian policy or LSB that says otherwise, I'll make the change you request, but otherwise I'm tempted to close this as not a bug. The need for PERL_SYS_INIT3() has been documented in perlembed.pod since 5.8.1 (upstream change 19147), so this is arguably not a bug in perl at all. I assume the difference between hppa and the other architectures is because hppa still uses linuxthreads instead of NPTL. There's an ongoing discussion on the debian-release and debian-hppa lists about switching to NPTL for hppa too, so the pressing problem just might resolve itself with time. I'm leaving this open for now as a place to discuss the implications of this behaviour change. Somebody (TM) should probably go through all packages embedding perl and check if they use PERL_SYS_INIT3() and/or if they hang on hppa. Downgrading and retitling. I'll file patches for the two known affected packages. -- Niko Tyni [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#485398: closed by Ian Wienand <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (Bug#485398: fixed in numactl 2.0.1+20080610-1)
Unfortunately the bug still exists. Some more testing just showed that only the -C option is affected, all options which take a node-id work as expected. Furthermore reverting libnuma1 to the version in testing gets rid of the libnuma1: warning, too. But when running with a debian flavour 2.6.25-2-amd64 it works all right (without any warning). So I will try to track down whether this is a regression in upstream or not and tell you later what I've found out. On a related note, I think numactl (2.0.1+20080610-1) needs a versioned depends on libnuma1, because it doesn't work with at least libnuma1 from testing (1.0.2-1). It fails with the following output: numactl: /usr/lib/libnuma.so.1: no version information available (required by numactl) numactl: /usr/lib/libnuma.so.1: no version information available (required by numactl) numactl: relocation error: numactl: symbol numa_parse_cpustring, version libnuma_1.2 not defined in file libnuma.so.1 with link time reference Thanks for your efforts, Daniel -- Daniel Vetter E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tel.: +41 (0)79 365 57 48 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". About buxy's second sentence, it is not at all a way to "finish" a discussion. Accept my disagreement (and other's disgreement) as Debian Developers. Well, independently of this quite hot topic I think you finally have to accept the decision of the author of a piece of software (except you are a customer and are paying to insert or remove a special feature). So I'm afraid buxy is de facto right here. I do care about what happens in whatever part of Debian on my packages, but not at what happens in derivated distros. If somebody for $ANY derivative distro find a bug that affects to Debian, this person should report in the BTS or notify to Debian maintainers, whatever that works fine for both parts. If reality shows that people refuse to do this - and BTW, Ububtu does not seem to actually encourage its users to report bugs also to Debian - and thus I think that a hint for the maintainer in the BTS is not really harmfull. So accepting this decision seems not to be very hard. Then you are only considering one Debian derivative when Debian has thousands, and we can not track all of them and not all of them have a easy tracking system, but there are some big ones besides Ubuntu that could be considered as well. So you rather want to retitle the bug to Please link to BTS and perhaps fork the bug report to mention every single derivative that maintains a BTS which gives us a reasonable means to link to it. Call it Debian Ecosystem Packaging Tracking System or something like that. Sonds like an alternative if we find at least three reasonable link targets. Heck! it could even track another distros, not only derivatives and being a first step for sharing patches across distributions, idea that is around without any implementation. Very good idea. But for the concrete topic I think we should not stop the pragmatic *existing* part of the solution until we might have a better one.
