Bug#444377: cyrus-sasl2: General update after the debconf review process

2007-10-20 Thread Christian Perrier
Dear Debian maintainer,

On Sunday, September 09, 2007, I sent you a notification about the beginning of
a review
action on debconf templates for cyrus-sasl2.

Then, I sent you a bug report with rewritten templates and announcing
the beginning of the second phase of this action: call for translation
updates.

Translators have been working hard and here is now the result of their efforts.

Please consider using it EVEN if you committed files to your
development tree as long as they were reported.

The attached tarball contains:

- debian/changelog with the list of changes
- debian/control with rewrites of packages' descriptions
- debian/ with all the rewritten templates file(s)
- debian/po/*.po with all PO files (existing ones and new ones)

As said, please use *at least* the PO files as provided here,
preferrably over those sent by translators in their bug reports. All
of them have been checked and reformatted. In some cases, formatting
errors have been corrected.

The patch-nopo file contains a patch for the templates and control file(s).

Please note that this patch applies to the templates and control
file(s) of your package as of Sunday, September 09, 2007. If your package was
updated
in the meantime, I may have updated my reference copybut I also
may have missed that. This is indeed why I suggested you do not
modified such files while the review process was running,
remember..:-)

It is now safe to upload a new package version with these changes.

Please notify me of your intents with regards to this.

There is of course no hurry to update your package but feel free to
contact me in case you would need sponsoring or any other action to
fix this.

Bug#447330: silc-server: [debconf_rewrite] Debconf templates and debian/control review

2007-10-20 Thread Christian Perrier
Package: silc-server
Version: N/A
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Dear Debian maintainer,

On Friday, October 05, 2007, I notified you of the beginning of a review process
concerning debconf templates for silc-server.

The debian-l10n-english contributors have now reviewed these templates,
and the proposed changes are attached to this bug report.

Please review the suggested changes are suggested, and if you have any
objections, let me know in the next 3 days.

Please try to avoid uploading silc-server with these changes right now.

The second phase of this process will begin on Tuesday, October 23, 2007, when
I will
coordinate updates to translations of debconf templates.

The existing translators will be notified of the changes: they will
receive an updated PO file for their language.

Simultaneously, a general call for new translations will be sent to
the debian-i18n mailing list.

Both these calls for translations will request updates to be sent as
individual bug reports. That will probably trigger a lot of bug
reports against your package, but these should be easier to deal with.

The call for translation updates and new translations will run until
about Tuesday, November 13, 2007. Please avoid uploading a package with fixed
or changed
debconf templates and/or translation updates in the meantime. Of
course, other changes are safe.

Please note that this is an approximative delay, which depends on my
own availability to process this work and is influenced by the fact
that I simultaneously work on many packages.

Around , I will contact you again and will send a final patch
summarizing all the updates (changes to debconf templates,
updates to debconf translations and new debconf translations).

Again, thanks for your attention and cooperation.

2007-10-20 Thread Bin Zhang
Package: fvwm
Version: 1:2.5.23-2

Hi,

When using startx with fvwm, the key binding
Key XF86PowerOffAAExec exec ...
doesn't work.

I see the error message
[fvwm][ParseBinding]: <> No such key: XF86PowerOff

I think this is because the key symbol XF86PowerOff is not defined by xorg at
the time the binding line is processed.

If I run xdm, then fvwm, the key binding for XF86PowerOff works fine.

Best regards,
Bin

Bug#435119: procps is required

From 3.5 of the Policy Manual:

"Packages are not required to declare any dependencies they have on
other packages which are marked Essential (see below), and should not
do so unless they depend on a particular version of that package."

procps is not marked Essential AFAIK. Thanks for keeping your eyes
peeled though.

You're right. But for ex. libc6 is not essential, should (nearly) each
program depend on it??? Essential deals with unconfigured (and working)
packages, not with required (or not) packages. It's bizarre to me.

Bug#447332: short description is unclear

"a network system supporting team using Qt4" doesn't look like a sensible
description to me.

Maybe the maintainer does mean "a network system supporting team collaboration
using Qt4", what is itself still short enough AFAIK.

Cheers,

I received your suggestion through Debian bug-tracking system.

You're perfectly right, it might just be nice to support higher
resolution. Problem is LW5 will not run efficiently on such resolutions
for it doesn't use any hardware acceleration, and won't like 1600x1200
very much. I myself never felt this limitation for when I want a "big"
display I go fullscreen. Raising the resolution will only slow down the
game without showing more information, for currently there's no level
which is that big (that is, a level showing more that 1024x768 fighting
pixels). To be honest, I have a 1600x1200 desktop and a 1400x1050
laptop, and always play 640X480... But I'm aware this is only *my* way
to use it and I understand you have a different point of view, and other
needs.

I won't promise you that I'll implement this feature in LW5 any soon,
but you might be interested in knowing that LW6 does not have such
limitation, you can run it in 1781x1348 if you like 8-)

Bug#215659: Patch to allow working on vfat filesystem (use ..._ if ... fails)

2007-10-20 Thread Russell Steicke
Hello,

The attached patch makes cfs try to open a file called "..._" if "..."
fails. It's simpler than I thought it would be as there are only four
places that file is opened or created. cfs built with this patch will
still open older cfs directories, and will create compatible
directories by default, except where creating "..." fails.

Not extensively tested, but I thought I'd put it out there for
comment.

As far as I can tell, this is technically difficult. What would be the
mechanism to reserve the device ? What happens when two users try to
reserve the same device at the same time ?? For me, it seems to only
push the problem earlier in time, but that wouldn't solve it : nothing
could prevent a malicious user to permanently lock all the devices, and
you wouldn't be able to access your data as well.

One way might be to reserve the use of pmount to physically logged-in
users, but that isn't always a good idea (think about, say, SMB shares,
or even local hard-drives that are not permanently mounted for some
reasons)...

I now see better the problem which you are rising, but I currently
don't see any technical solution - or at least, none that would be more
fool-proof than the current (non) solution.

My advice would be to resort to cryptography, if you fear for the
safety of your data; pmounts handles that transparently (devices created
with luksformat). I agree however that it wouldn't be convenient

Yes, very bad ;-)... That's why I split the reports in the end.

  Currently,

pmount /dev/something

mounts it privately (for filesystems that don't support permissions,
others are not affected).

pmount -u 022 /dev/something

mounts it with umask = 022. That's basically your --public/--private
options, except they have slightly different names. UTF8 is slightly
more complex, as the Linux Kernel doesn't support UTF8 very well with
FAT, see:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=443514

I considered this part of the request to be implemented.

  You're welcome ;-) !

it gives CDS_TRAY_OPEN even if the tray is closed.

ioctl works as expected with ide-cd driver. Here is the patch to get the same
behaviour on SCSI drives for kernel 2.6.10. 2.4 branch have same problem.

Bug#447342: Should Build-depends simply on mono-xsp2-base and mono-xsp-base

2007-10-20 Thread Cesare Tirabassi
Package: monodevelop
Version: 0.14+dfsg-3
Severity: wishlist
Usertags: origin-ubuntu hardy

Hi,

In version 0.12+dfsg-1 Build-depends on mono-xsp and mono-xsp2 were added for
ASP.NET support.
However these packages contain the web server too, which should not be
necessary for building.
Indeed, I have tested that the application builds correctly just with
build-deps on mono-xsp-base and mono-xsp2-base.

See also https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/monodevelop/+bug/123182

Thank you,

Cesare

I'd say that the "links" attribute is transitive, so that we'd have
linkage of openssl via exim to mysql.

I think that a question to the tech ctte has more chance of receiving
an answer.

Just like you do now with libpq? I've already explained why I don't
think this is an issue in a seperate email.

Since I said ftp-master was probably more helpful, I've put my money
where my mouth is. I've already spoken with Ganneff, and he said my
proposal would be acceptable to him, in his role in NEW processing, at
least.

My main point about the tech-ctte was that it is mainly for unresolved
disputes - it's a bit early to go running to them before we've even had
a good argument :)

Which is bad. I'll discuss this.

Bug#441369: jack: crashes on terminal resize

2007-10-20 Thread Martin Michlmayr
* Felix C. Stegerman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> [2007-09-09 12:46]:
> No, it didn't. I've been using jack a lot in the past weeks, and [for
> the reasons mentioned] resize the window quite often. I updated some

Sorry for the long delay with this problem! I finally looked at it
today. My big problem is that I don't know anything about ncurses, so
it's a bit hard for me to tackle this problem. I found that I'm able
to reproduce your problem. When I put an try:/except: pass around
that particular code, I get an exception somewhere else. I repeated
that a few times... until I noticed that this is obviously no
solution.

I have no idea why jack uses its own ncurses module (apparently from
Python 1.4) but it seems it really needs that module. So in the end I
decided to switch back to jack's curses module. However, we'd lose
UTF-8 support. But I solved this by linking to ncursesw instead of
ncurses.

In other words, your bug will be gone in the next upload and we'll
still have UTF-8 support. I'll do an upload later today.

Apologies again for the delay. When the new version is in the
archive, I'd appreciate it if you would tell me whether it works for
you.

Thanks.

Bug#447346: udevd-event[3162]: run_program: '/lib/udev/usb_id' abnormal exit

2007-10-20 Thread hugo vanwoerkom
Package: udev
Version: 0.114-2
Severity: normal

Since booting the vanilla 2.6.23.1 kernel that I compiled using the
2.6.22-2-k7 .config file (+the .23.1 additions) I
get the subject error at booting, first when it initializes the
initramfs and then when udev is started.
Never got this before at the latest Sid kernel for i386 + k7. Googled
for the error: ng. Maybe this is of use.

Regards,

Hugo

Bug#447320: boinc-manager: Failed to create a new account with "missing or bad parameter: user_name" on certain condition.

2007-10-20 Thread Frank S. Thomas
Hi,

First of all I want to thank you for this straightforward and detailed bug
report. You've done a great job at analysing this error!

Since one can change the user name later on the project's web site and it is
not required for login (only email and password are) I'd vote for your second
proposed fix. I propose to use the login name (first field in /etc/passwd)
for user_name if wxGetUserName() returns an empty string. Here is the patch
I'm going to forward to the BOINC developers:

                 ai->user_name = (const char*)::wxGetUserName().mb_str();
+                if (ai->user_name.empty()) {
+                    ai->user_name = (const char*)::wxGetUserId().mb_str();
+                }

Thanks and regards,
Frank

Of course that failed, I had forgotten the regex :-)
So... that should have been "bridge_ports regex eth.*"

Sorry, I'm uploading it right now :-)

Thanks for your patch and the quick fix, Thomas, and sorry for the delay in
the upload.

Nicolas,

Thanks for your bug report.

Although those packages should be available for amd64:

http://packages.debian.org/sid/libkexiv2-3/amd64/download
http://packages.debian.org/sid/libkdcraw2/amd64/download

What does it state when you try and `apt-get install digikam`?

Bug#379378: "poster" commandline utility and KDEPrint/kprinter's GUI frontend

2007-10-20 Thread Kurt Pfeifle
2 days ago I blogged about kprinters GUI support for "poster":

  http://www.kdedevelopers.org/node/3051

My openSUSE-10.2 system has the 2002 version installed, and for me it
always worked fine, with no problem whatsoever. I even never thought that
there were newer versions around

So at the time I wrote the blog, I was unaware of any post-2002 additio-
nal patches to poster. I only recalled the original ones Michael Goffioul
did in 2002 (and which were accepted by the upstream poster author as
well).

In 2005 and 2006 more modifications were made, and it looks like these
led to some (rather unspecified) problems.

But I've not seen *any* step by step description how to reproduce the
problem, nor an example PostScript file that can trigger it.

In any case, for Debian to ship a 1999 version seems a bit odd (given
the fact that the upstream author already agreed to ship the 2002 one).

If Debian could decide to at least go for the 2002 version again, they'd
do a big favor to all KDE users because they could use kprinter with
poster again.

As it stands now, all Debian KDE users who happen to install poster will
get a very ugly error message once they open the Poster tab in kprinter.

Peter,

I wonder if you can recall any details that led you to the statement "it
was very buggy" when you said

I had updated the poster package to use the KDE version for
some time, but it was very buggy

Maybe you have some archive or access to more detailed user complaints
that led you to that conclusion?

I hope I can help find someone who works on this code again for a little
while to remove the bugs anyone found, so a "definite" re-release of
poster could be made some time in future, which will make all distros
and all users happy.

But more specific bug reports would definitely help tremendously in
that.

Bug#102393: Still valid bug

2007-10-20 Thread Esteban Manchado Velázquez
This bug is still valid. You just have to go to

/usr/share/doc/HTML/tools/index.html

If you have bzip2 installed, you'll see the title:

bzip2 and libbzip2: a program and library for dat

Which is exactly 49 characters. I have rewritten dhelp_parse in Ruby, and I
can easily raise this 49 characters limit to, say, 100 or more easily.
Hopefully I'll take over dhelp and upload a new version (with the rewritten
dhelp_parse) soon...

Bug#447350: No (obvious) way of skipping the creation of a user account during install

2007-10-20 Thread Martin
Package: debian-installer
Version: 20070308etch1
Priority: wishlist

I'm using the Debian Etch 4.0r0, netinstall ISO image and I note there
is no way of skipping the creation of a user account after setting up
the root password. I appreciate that it is good practise to always have
a user account, etc. but in some cases, such as when all of the user
accounts are being pulled from elsewhere (i.e. LDAP, NIS) being forced
to create one is just annoying. Perhaps there is a way of skipping
this, if so, could you make it a little more obvious? When I tried
just continuing the stage gave me an error an put me back to entering
the root password.

I appreciate that this is rather subjective and could also be filed
under 'whiney user request' but I thought it's worth mentioning. It's
fine by me if the answer is 'No, because ...'

Cheers,
 - Martin

I agree with you.
I have tested your patch and confirmed that boinc-manager sent login name for
the user_name parameter if wxGetUserName() returns empty strings.
So creating a new account have successfully completed.

As already explained earlier in this bug log, this is because
applications now use GTK+ for printing instead of libgnomeprint. If you
want to print using LPR, you need to set the following in .gtkrc-2.0 :
gtk-print-backends = "file,lpr"

It's best to just use whatever's most current. debootstrap doesn't tend
to drop backward compatibility.

As you observe, this is due to using the I flag to sed's s command. I've
replaced this as follows, which should work even on your ancient system:

-sed -ne 's/^Version: *//Ip' | head -n 1
+grep -i ^Version: | sed -e 's/[^:]*: *//' | head -n 1

Thanks, there is definitely something wrong as python-gst0.10 is
optional but it doesn't guarantee that the plugins are installed.

Meanwhile, you can install gstreamer0.10-plugins-base, this should work
around the bug.

Hey Jon,

thanks for the patch. I applied it to our svn in a slightly modified
version. First, I renamed cryptsetup_start to cryptdisks_start.
cryptsetup is the upstream tool, cryptdisks are our wrappers around it.

Second, I added some copyright header to the script:

# Initial code and (c) 2007 Jon Dowland <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
# License: GNU General Public License, v2 or any later
# (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html)

I changed that one to

install -m 0755 debian/scripts/cryptdisks_start
$(CURDIR)/debian/cryptsetup/usr/sbin/

Bug#447352: /etc/init.d/hostname.sh: input sanitizing?

2007-10-20 Thread Marc Haber
Package: initscripts
Version: 2.86.ds1-38.1
Severity: minor

Hi,

/etc/init.d/hostname.sh hands over whatever it reads to /bin/hostname
verbatim. This can lead to numerous software doing funny things with
the host name.

I do not have a clue which characters are/should be allowed in a
hostname and/or whether there is a definition for it (hence the
Severity: minor), but I'd like to suggest basic input sanitizing which
at least prevents nonsense like trailing blanks from being passed to
the operating system.

Greetings

Bug#447353: glib-2.0 gthread-2.0 gobject-2.0 should probably be moved to Requires.private

2007-10-20 Thread Loïc Minier
Package: liborbit2-dev
Version: 1:2.14.7-0.1
Severity: wishlist
File: /usr/lib/pkgconfig/ORBit-2.0.pc

Hi,

 I think ORBit-2.0.pc could benefit from moving "glib-2.0 gthread-2.0
gobject-2.0" from Requires to Requires.private as to avoid superfluous
links in resulting binaries. Especially gthread and gmodule might not
be used by all rbdeps of liborbit2-dev.

   Thanks,

I have filed a new bug against initscripts (#447352) suggesting input
sanitazion before setting the actual hostname in
/etc/init.d/hostname.sh, and have forwarded this bug to upstream, also
suggesting input sanitazion in case of strange hostnames.

I think this is all I can do for the moment.

Bug#429233: .dhelp files are created by install-docs

2007-10-20 Thread Esteban Manchado Velázquez
tags 429233 wontfix
thanks

Hi Emil,

Those .dhelp files are created by the packages themselves, in a
"install-docs" call in their postinst (dh_installdocs creates that call
usually).

So, they don't really belong to dhelp. I'm tagging the bug as invalid,
please untag if you don't agree or have more comments...

Bug#447361: Weird permissions on .pid file

2007-10-20 Thread Loïc Minier
Package: system-tools-backends
Version: 2.2.1-4
Severity: important

Hi,

/var/run/system-tools-backends.pid has weird permissions on my system.
 I once saw it as:
--wsr-Sr-T 1 rootroot5 2007-05-01 08:41
system-tools-backends.pid

 But now it's rather:
-r-sr-x--t 1 rootroot 4 2007-10-18 09:22
system-tools-backends.pid

Rming it between dbus stop and start gives again:
-r-sr-x--t 1 rootroot 4 2007-10-18 09:22
system-tools-backends.pid

It's the only daemon with such permissions, I have no idea what they
are for, but they look like a bug or misfeature and I'm worried about
them, although I couldn't any direct security implication right now.

I personally like the idea and it's really useful to be added. The
only thing I found, that could be improved, is it to use sorting when
calling the scripts so you have an expected order respected as it
being done on other hooks directories like finish-install.d and like.

For popcon I'd suggest to use 10popcon script name so people can put
something before it to be called easily.

Could you please detail the steps you did that lead to the problem
happening? Just creating and deleting a diary entry seems not to be
enough to reproduce it (at least I was not able to).

Also, if you still have a copy of the gnotime-data.xml file (maybe some
of the automatic backups produced by gnotime) that causes the problem to
happen, you could send it to me so I can try to debug it.

Thank you,

Bug#368035: Recommends: doc-base

2007-10-20 Thread Esteban Manchado Velázquez
Hi Teemu,

Bug #314733 already asks dhelp to depend on doc-base. Hopefully I'm going
to take over dhelp, and upload a new version soon-ish. This new version will
depend on doc-base...

Bug#447352: [Pkg-sysvinit-devel] Bug#447352: /etc/init.d/hostname.sh: input sanitizing?

2007-10-20 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Marc Haber]
> /etc/init.d/hostname.sh hands over whatever it reads to /bin/hostname
> verbatim. This can lead to numerous software doing funny things with
> the host name.

I must admit that my personal stanse on this is that if you fill the
hostname with noise and something break, you get to keep all the
pieces. I do not believe it is the task of /etc/init.d/hostname.sh to
hide the mistakes done by the system administrator. Hiding it might
make some program work and others who uses the content of
/etc/hostname directly to fail, and this seem like a bad idea to me.

Happy hacking,
