Interested people probably already read this in
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=334758#c27 , but anyway I'll
mention that Persian looks different than Arabic although they share the
same code points in Unicode.  It's the same case as the Han unification
of CJK.  DejaVu has Arabic glyphs and lack of OpenType LOCL support will
prevent Persian in DejaVu for some time, except if DejaVu developers
decide to make separate DejaVu Persian font.

check it yourself:
http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/spellcheck/level1/index.html

for every language you can see which glyphs are needed
("Codepoints" column) and how many times they're used

Looks like bad translation to me though. Should probably be something like 
an mdash instead.

I do agree 100%: if I could choose, I wouldn't like to see such characters in 
d-i translations and I would leave those for OpenOffice documents or such.

Nice.
But I have realised that it does not work after the reboot. The
installer adds the option to the kernel command line, but libata does
not care. So you still have to add the option for modprobe before
the cdrom can be used in the newly installed system.

Sure, but within reason. Box drawing characters are over the limit. They 
are not even intended for this kind of usage.

I installed on a SATA system using a self built installer I built last
wednesday and was able to install without using any of the described
workaroud. The installed kernel and the new 2.6.16 are unable to see the
DVD. I have tried both kernel command line and setting options in
modprobe.d/libata.

Clytie, would you mind replacing this character U2501 "━"  with mdash,
or something that is fitted?
There are 24 usages of this character, while U2014  "—" is used 25 times...

the chroot used did not contain freefont ttf files; as soon as I have more
time I will take screnshots containing all the font files (to see if there's
any sort of conflict)
If anything's fine I'll switch g-i as to use dejavu as default font; I will
coordnate with Frans before doing anything though.

locked and has the user account set up to be able to get root with sudo.
(As seen in Ubuntu.)

prebaseconfig script and editing /etc/sudoers.

yes: I'll be happy to do it asap.
Khmer fonts are already included in the mini.iso (ttf-khmeros_3.10-2.tgz);
I run a test with Dzongkha (see [1]) but had no feedback so far.
As for Thai you've added the necessary infos to the wiki and I'll run a
test using ttf-thai-tlwg.

That probably means that your DVD drive is not SATA ATAPI but a "normal, 
oldfashioned" drive.

You probably have type "udf" mentioned in your /etc/fstab for the CD 
drive. Could you test if removing that helps?

This is currently not possible as the package that the installer calls to 
install the base system does not provide that information.

Well, that is both a bug and a feature.
It's a bug because for daily/weekly builds netinst and full CD's the CD is 
currently completely ignored. The cause for this has been identified and 
rectified.
It's a feature because you can indeed have the installer use both the CD 
and a mirror as source. It should then take packages that have not been 
updated from the CD and those that have from the mirror.

I have once or twice in a PO file used U2501, where a box has been  
drawn, or endashes have been used to draw a horizontal rule. This  
type of decoration is not a common occurrence in the original strings  
in PO files.

In general cases, as I've pointed out in other mails, when you have a  
language with a great many varied diacritics in differing positions,  
it's important not to use any punctuation or added characters which  
can be confused with them. That's why I use emdash instead of endash:  
it's longer and easier to distinguish visually.

Debian installer support of ipw2200-based wifi-based installation

My centrino laptop has a functional wifi system (ipw2200) suppose if wifi is the only LAN connection available for my laptop, at this stage is it possible for me to configure the Debian installer so that it can do a net-install via the wifi system?  If not, when would it be likely for this feature to be added to the Debian installer? (or would this feature be likely to be implemented into the debian installer in the final version of etch?) This feature would be critical for promoting mass-adoption of Laptop into our Debian system.
Also, the wireless network in my office uses the WAP2 PSK encryption.  Would the installer be able to accomodate this (i.e. let the user specify the type of encryption used (WEP/ WAP etc.) and let the user enter the hex key / passphase? (Currently Ununtu Dapper installer supports wifi-based installation, but doesn't seem to support WAP / WAP2, please correct me if I'm wrong)

When running a test, I suggest you send a mail on -i18n and take care
to CC the translation coordinator.

Experience has proven that some of the translation coordinators are
sometimes not attentive enough to debian-i18n (and some are not
subscribed to -boot).

The information about translation coordinators is in
installer/doc/i18n/languages.xml of course.

IPW2200 support needs some non free firmware to be loaded for the
kernel modules to work.

By definition, these non free modules cannot be included in the
installer itself, so they have to be loaded manually by the user
during the install, from a removable device.

For this to be possible, some work has to be done to allow user
promptinh at the right moment, etcthis is a known issue and we
mostly need someone to work on it.

Currently, only manual operations can maybe allow ipw2200 module to
work in the installer by manually copying the firmware to
/lib/firmware from VT2 just before the network configuration step is
run.

The firware has also to be copied in /target/lib/firmware at the end
of the install, before rebooting.

(all these suggestions are untested...)

 I am really sorry for not providing the feed back after receiving the screenshot of Dzongkha in g-i.

After going through the screen shots our translator doesnot have any
complains and are happy to see their work bore fruits so soon..

I would be greatful if the latest version of Jomolhari font is added as the Default font for Dzongkha in g-i...

That's the one I caught today, when I got the mail. I removed it and  
recommitted the changed file. I didn't realize there were 24 of them:  
I would have expected it to be longer than that. Anyway, the  
important thing is that they are gone. :)


Thanks for finding this for me. I should have counted them when I  
deleted them.


I've just received the first of my auto-DI-update emails, which  
announce that level 1 needs updating anyway, so I will be committing  
it again today. :)

I think you've fixed them; the string containing _all_ 24 characters was
the following:

which now has been replaced with:
