[Debconf-team] DebConf17 in Montreal: I'd like to help
Hi, I live in Montreal. I've been using Debian since either Hamm or Bo. I'm not a developer, just a humble user, but I love Debian. I'd like to help with DebConf in Montreal this summer. I'm going back to school at the end of May after a medical leave. I don't yet know what my schedule will be in August, but I should be able to find some time to work at a welcome desk or something like that. Where do I go from here? Hi debconf-team and content, We suggested to FACIL that they could still suggest a presentation for Open Day even though the deadline had passed. They tried to submit via the web form, but they couldn't because of the passed deadline. He's asked if there was some other way to submit, so I'm sending this to debconf-team and content in the hope that someone can look over their proposal. The proposal is below. I've just had a quick look at them. I think it's probably to early in the process to be worried about formatting and typo's at this point, content is the most important, in my view. I see two content related issues. The first is that Debian calls itself "the universal operating system". On page three of the brochure, there is a heading "The Free Operating System". To my ears that sounds conflictual. I would change that heading to "The Universal Operating System". I might then change the following heading from "Debian is Universal, Debian is Choice" to "Debian is Freedom, Debian is Choice". The second content related issue is on page 9. The 4th paragraph under the heading "The Need for Sponsorship" talks about DebConf in Montreal as if it hasn't happened yet. You need to change that to talk about Hsinchu and how many attendees you expect, etc. My first impression is that the rest of the content is not bad. Zobel has already pointed out some formatting issues. I won't repeat them here. But, I wouldn't worry about formatting and typos too much until you are completely happy with the content, because changing content can often change the formatting so you might as well save all the formatting issues for last. It sucks having to refix something you've already fixed just because you made a content change. I'll try to find time to have another look later. [Debconf-team] Flyer and brochure suggested edits
Hi, I've had a look at the flyer and brochure. I have some suggestions. I've editted the respective *.en.tex files to incorporate my suggestions then diff'd the original *.en.tex files against my modified versions. I've attached the resulting diff output to this email. One change I didn't make that I think we need to address is the use of "swag bags" and "conference bags" in the sponsorship benefits table. We need to pick one term and use it in both places, IMO. Another inconsistency that I noticed which also needs fixing is the use of both "t-shirts" and "T-shirts" in the two docs. We need to decide which form to use and then use it throughout. I didn't have time to address this. I'm a noob to this conference planning gig and to contributing to Debian in general. [Debconf-team] Further suggestion for flyer and brochure
Hi all, I have a couple more suggestions for the flyer. I brought these up on #dc-t where there was some limited discussion (started at 19:12 UTC, for those who want to see it). "Access to swag in conference bags" sounds like sponsors, bronze and up, can take what they want from the swag bags. We want to let them know that, rather, that they can put things in the swag bags. After some discussion with another native English speaker, we came up with "Provide materials for conference bags". Ie., they can put stuff in the bags. It also removes the word swag which may not be understood in all countries. Changing it in the flyer implies changing it in the brochure as well. The other suggestion is to remove the triple repetition of "sponsor" and "sponsorship" in the "for further information" sentence below the table. Thus, "For further information about Debian and DebConf, a complete description of the advantages of the various sponsor levels, as well as further sponsorship opportunities, please see our detailed sponsorship brochure. would become "For further information about Debian and DebConf, a complete description of the advantages of the various sponsorship levels, as well as further opportunities, please see our detailed brochure. How about DebConf18 ("DebConf18 will take place in Hsinchu, ...")? I'm just a little uncomfortable with the phrasing of "In 2018,..." It feels a tiny bit awkward. But it is not incorrect, so I won't insist if you want to keep it as is. It also will be outdated in January. Might we be sending out sponsorship requests in January, or will that all be done before hand?
