Stus-List C&C 37+ window replacement

2018-02-09 Thread Mark Baldridge via CnC-List

Hi All,

I'm in discussion with the yard to replace the fixed windows on my
37/40+ this spring. They barely leak, but there are vertical splits on
both sides of the forward windows and in big downpours do leak. I
currently have blue tape on them to stop the leaks when I'm not around.
I want them replaced and looking sharp before the wife picks out new
upholstery for the interior.

So far I'm looking at having them use 3M 4991 VHB tape and Dow 795
caulking. For those that have this done, any tips I should pass on to
the folks doing the work.

Also what was used for the windows, "cast" plexiglass? and what
thickness? I've read 3/8 in posts, but I've been told 1/4" would work
better due to the curvature of the adhesion area.

Thanks,
Mark Baldridge

It is not totally clear to me. This seems high.  Maybe it included
extras and/or assumed interest.  Playing around with a mortgage
calculator, I see that a $100k mortgage at 9% interest for 15
years gives a total cost of $182,568.   But in 1981, the home
mortgage rates where around 15%.  Working backwards from a total
cost of $182k at 15% interest gives a mortgage amount of $73,000.
Assuming that the original owners provided 20-25% down payment
would give an estimated sale price of  $91k - $97k.   Same ball
park as what Ed noted.  The higher price may seem more
reasonable.  A search on Google shows a listing for a 1981 LF38
for $89k and a listing of a 1983 for $110k in the Sep 1984 issue

Stus-List VHB tape adhesion

2018-07-06 Thread Mark Baldridge via CnC-List

Hi All,

I'm having the fixed windows replaced on my C&C 37/40+. I had fiberglass
work done to clean up the window opening on the deck before putting the
new windows on.
I bought the windows from South Shore and am having them installed with
3M VHB tape, then Dow 795 caulking.
The VHS tape adheres great to the windows, but not so well to the deck.
There is 2 part epoxy primer on the window openings and it has been
properly cleaned. A test area has been sanded and the tape doesn't
appear to stick there much better. There is plenty of heat here in the
North Carolina, so that is not the problem.

Has anyone else had this issue of the tape not sticking well to the deck
and possibly have suggestions that I can pass to the yard?

pilot is disengaged. With the wheel pilot, there was little
difference.

I have steered a boat with hydraulic steering once (a Whitby 42)
whose entire steering (auto or not) was hydraulic. The response of
that system was so bad I swore I would never have anything to do
with another hydraulic unit.

Of course, when not engaged I understand that the pilot would not
be steering the boat--OTOH, it is still connected in some manner.

Since I mostly PHRF race the boat, I need to have the wheel/rudder
move without additional resistance from the auto-pilot.

Is this something I should be concerned about or is the wheel
'free' when the auto-pilot is not engaged?

Hello all,

First season with new to us C&C MKII and so far so good!  What a great
boat and still far from having discovered everything about it. Did
find out that it is wicked fast, I am a novice sailor at best and
these days we are in the frontrunners at every Wednesday night club
races!  Anyways, I am slowly compiling a to-do list for the fall and
spring off seasons and seeking your valuable knowledge on little fixes.

1) The electrical panel on the boat has tank level monitors for fresh
and waste tank but these do not work, is this something that can be
fixed?  I assume there must be some type of sender unit on the tanks
but before I tear everything apart, I am curious to see if you have
run into this issue.

2) The propane stove (force ten) has a non fonctional electronic
ignitor that would nice to replace or update, if anyone has insight on
this would be grateful to hear about it.

Little things that can add convenience is always nice!

Cheers and happy sailing,

This one is not going to be good. The eye is projected to come inland 10
miles south of our house (living on an island is great 11 months out of
the year). We boarded up today and I told the wife if there is anything
you want to see again, pack it up. We're heading up to Washington NC
tomorrow to anchor the boat out. We're setting the 35lb CQR with 150'
chain and snubber and a 50 lb danforth in the Pamlico River in 12 feet
of water.

Most NC storms do a late track to the north which would impact the boat
as much as the house. Hopefully, this will stay the course and spare the
boat (priorities!).

Hey Jim,

Good to hear Edge #1 is ready as well!

I'm anchoring out in Blounts Bay. I suspect I'll be the only one there
since there isn't a lot of wind protection. Most boats in Broad Creek
will anchor 100 yards from the docks in the creek. I did it once on the
35MkII and ended up with a bent rudder. Not enough water in the creek
when the wind shifts. You also need to watch for boats that throw out a
lunch hook.

Good luck to you, Rick, & Tex.

Re: Stus-List Rob - Edge: survival

2018-09-27 Thread Mark Baldridge via CnC-List

Richard,

I anchored her out on Tuesday, 9/11. I was the only boat there at the
time. I've anchored my 35mk2 in that location many times. I like it
because no one else anchors there and there is enough deep water that if
it blows out I don't pound the bottom.

Two other boats later anchored out with me, a Catalina 25 and a Nonsuch.
Both of them blew on shore. The Catalina was retrieved before the waters
dropped and was re-anchored. No such luck for the Nonsuch (see pic).

I put out a delta 35lb on 200 ft or rode with new chafe guard. I put out
a 35lb CQR with 200ft of chain and snubber. When I found her, she had
drug .42 miles. Good thing I didn't have the spot tracker running or I
would have gone crazy. The delta was not holding and was wrapped up in a
ghost crabpot. The CQR was holding and the snubber had come unattached
and the chain spun the release on the windlass so that all the chain
plus 150ft of rode ran out. Good thing the rode was well attached to the
bow. It took about 15 minutes to get the CQR up with the windlass and
assistance from a powerboat. Next time I will use my 45lb danforth as
the secondary anchor. Lesson learned.

When I retrieved the boat the engine would just bump and not turn over.
I hand turned it back and it would stop at the same spot going forward.
Figured water may have entered it. I keep a head sail on board, so we
sailed her back in the slip. That was Monday 9/17. Still blowing, but
had help putting her in the slip. Motor is fine after getting the water
out and changing oil/filter. So, not a scratch on her!

Everyone that stayed at the Washington Country Club docks in Broad Creek
did fine. Figure that! I just can't leave a boat in the slip during high
water. Boats also came off their stands in the yards due to high water.
A lot of boats anchored in Broad Creek also went in the trees. I'll take
my chances out at anchor in the big water.

2017-01-04 Thread Mark Baldridge via CnC-List

Tom,

I looked at the boat about when the photos were taken and prior to the
listing going up. The backstay is currently disconnected while the
hydraulics are out being rebuilt. They are currently tied off to the
stern pulpit. If you look close at the main picture you can see
attachment point next to where the hydraulic line exits the deck.

I assume that this is standard.

Thanks,
Mark

Stus-List C&C 37/40+ Universal M-35 heat exchanger

2017-02-15 Thread Mark Baldridge via CnC-List
Bruce W. isn't the only one to buy a 37/40+ this month. We took
possession of our 37/40+ this past Wednesday!

Spent the week going over the systems and doing a bit of sailing in
Mobile Bay.

The heat exchanger on the Universal M-35 is looking quite rough.

The parts manual has the current part as 302253 and the replacement part
is 302631. Has anyone replaced their unit with the "updated" part # and
are there any differences between the two other than mounting?

Dennis,

Unfortunately, I'm in North Carolina and the boat is in Mobile, AL.
We're hoping to sail her home the end of March.

If the new one is a drop in, it would save a bit of time. However, I'm
heading back down week after next to go over the engine and may pull it
and have it refurbished prior to the next boat visit.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: Stus-List C&C 37/40+ Universal M-35 heat exchanger

2017-02-16 Thread Mark Baldridge via CnC-List

Joe,

It does not leak nor overheat. However, I'm worried about electrolysis
as the zincs have not been changed in the last two and a half years and
there is lot of green coating on it at the ends and fittings.

I'm planning on taking the boat from Mobile Bay to Washington NC the end
of March by water, so I have a little time to get it right. Just don't
want a problem once I'm on the move.

I'll be back to the boat week after next. I'll pull the caps off and
check the zinc and see what the condition looks like. Maybe I can find a
shop that can give me a quick turn around if it looks bad.

All my previous boats are/were raw water cooled A4s. I'm just not
familiar with exchangers and their possible failure issues.

Thanks,
Mark

Stus-List Universal M-35 Hurst transmission

2017-02-27 Thread Mark Baldridge via CnC-List

Ahoy Universal/Hurst transmission owners,

I'm changing all the fluids on the M-35 and and the last thing I need to
do is drain & fill the transmission fluid.

This is the only fluid that I don't know what the PO used last.

The manual says ATF "A " or GM-Dextron II. Do not mix different oils.

I'm going to drain everything before re-filling. What brand/label of
transmission fluid do you guys use?

Here is the info from the POs documentation that I found on my MaxProp:

Hi Chuck,

I had a similar situation with my old cruising cutter with a Gori

learn to go full speed in reverse just to get a wee bite.

In my investigation I found the prop's 18 x 12 expected performance
was suitable for a 2:1 transmission. The installed tranny was a 3:1,
which is great for efficiency and performance but only if the prop is
sized right. I think it was mistake when ordered (like 10 years
earlier) but that is a whole 'nother story.

Do you know what degree pitch the current setting is? I have a vague
recollection a Max prop should be around 14 degree for a 2:1 gearbox
and hull speed in the 6.5 - 7 knot range.  But don't quote me.. the
last one I set up was maybe 4 years ago.

The PO of our boat used SeaHawk in Mobile Bay. It looked great at the
survey after 2-ish years.

I'm now in North Carolina in the Pamlico River. Had SeaHawk Biocop TF
blue put on May 2017. I had the boat pulled last week to install a a PYI
dripless stuffing box and cutlass bearing and the bottom still looks
great. I've cleaned it in the water only 3 or 4 times (using scuba) and
I've had a short pull and pressure wash twice in almost to two years.
I'm in brackish water and in a creek that doesn't get a lot of current.
Highly recommend it!

Aside from Bruce’s C&C 37+ and a few others I know about, there’s not
a whole lot of C&C action in the Gulf area, but maybe others will one

VERY satisfying in knowing that last October was the last time I’ll
winterize my engine and that I won’t really need to haul the boat
again for at least a few years, then only to slap some new paint on
the bottom and then go back sailing again.

I’d love to get a Rendezvous together for late June or something like
that in the LI Sound area — stay tuned for that.

Glad you are finding success racing and enjoying your boat.
My two cents: The ammount of prep needed will be determined by the
competition. So if you're winning, relax.
If you get some boats stripping out their cabins, or some "drysailed
race only boats", you may need to slim down a lot. PHRF allows
removing the cushions but not furniture. Still, many boats remove the
table, stove, and pump all tanks dry.

The most important thing for us was scrubbing the bottom prior to
race. Our fleet had a few "mirror bottom" boats; w burnished bottom
paint and one J24 that lived on a trailer and was craned in hours
before a race. All with new sails and experienced crew. Lightening the
boat is more important for light winds especially against well
prepared higher rating boats. We raced one summer and never saw race
winds above 8 knots. In one race, we followed a Viper 640 around the
triangle course. There just wasn't enough wind to move the bigger,
heavier boats. On our short triangle races, of 4.5 miles, my 93 rated
34R had to finish 5 minutes ahead to keep my place against a J28 rated
172. I couldn't afford new sails, but could afford a Hookah and
regular scrubbing proved worth the investment.

Have fun.

Subject: Stus-List Another C&C Win !

This racing rookie is so proud to be the owner of this classic C&C !
This is # 3 😊
Yes, a good crew is key for sure, but this 1982,  37 is quick !In
this race most boats were not an issue, but we were up against a 1989
Tartan 37, 1979 Tartan 36 and a really nice newer model Beneteau 37

Even correct Halcyon  Smoked Em by many minutes !
I am hooked for sure!! And various  races  arescheduled for the next
3 weekends ! Ye Ha!!

On my previous boat (1975 C&C35 MK2), I put in a 4:1/8:1 system. Henry
from Layline put it together for me. I wish they were still around.

I could get the main in very quick pulling both lines, then pull on one
line to harden up. Flick of the lines down out of the cleats would give
a quick controlled ease of the main.

Lots of great ideas – thanks all!

Coquina is about to turn 50 and like a lightbulb suddenly going off, I
am like “Just because someone did it this way in 1973 because that is
how they were used to doing it from the 1960s doesn’t mean it is the
best way”.  My genoa was off for a UV cover replacement and we were
reaching in 25+ under just the main and there were a couple of times I
really would have liked sheet control from the helm!

Stus-List C&C 37+ Edson chain and wire spec

2022-10-24 Thread Mark Baldridge via CnC-List

Hi,

It's time to replace the steering cable on my C&C37+

I called Edson and they do not have the specs for the 37+. They said to
find the chain length and wire length and diameter in order to pick the
right kit.

I would like to have the new part in hand before I pull out the old one.
Does anyone know the dimensions or correct kit to buy for my boat?

Thanks,
Mark Baldridge

I replaced the primaries on my previous boat, 35 MKII, with Lewmar 48 3
speeds. A friend upgraded to self-tailers and I got a deal on them.

I used to yell 'grind, grind, grind' to the crew. Once I put these on, I
started yelling 'stop, stop, stop'.

Oldies, but goodies. Never any issues. Maybe some could be found.

Yep.
A pair of Barient 32 ST, look like SS. $2,500.  I think that is a
sweet deal.
I paid 2K over 10 years ago for a pair of those, and was thrilled to
get them.

Always have a look for used winches on eBay. If they were
used Lewmars, these are mostly indestructible so used is fine.
That is how I got my ST Lewmar 44s at $500 each. Compared to ~
$2000 each new.

Nathan,
Thanks for this data point!  I wish it were possible to test
run some winches before buying -- hah!  ST50 seems large, but
better a little large than two small.

Hi Jeff,

I replaced my primaries on my 34 with Anderson ST 50 winches
in 2000. They seem sized correctly to me - I certainly
wouldn't go smaller. They work fine for hauling in my 135
Genoa fully loaded up but it is about all a typical crew
can handle by themselves. If I was to do it again, I would pay
the extra for Lewmar Ocean winches of equivalent size or maybe
even one size up instead.
