Re: Stus-List C&C 33-2: PYI shaft seal

2018-10-20 Thread Steve Thomas via CnC-List
I don't know if this is brand-specific, or which brands were involved, but
while I had my boat hauled out and was in the process of making a decision on
what to do about the packing gland on my boat, 2 boats in the same marina had
serious leaks due to broken graphite parts in their dripless packings. One of
them sank and the other managed to get hauled out in time. I did not know that
such a catastrophic and sudden failure mode even existed up til then. No vendor
or manufacturer's literature that I had seen even mentioned such a possibility.
How such an event could be handled at sea I did not know. Anyway, it freaked me
out and I decided to install a new conventional packing gland instead.

Don’t know about your specific mirror. On my boat, there is a framed mirror
screwed into the bulkhead wall. I removed it from the wall by taking out the
screws and took the framed mirror to a local glass shop. They removed the old
mirror from the frame and replaced it. I then screwed the frame back in with
the new mirror installed. Easy peezy.

In my aft cabin, there’s a framed mirror on the wall above the engine
compartment, which I’d like to redo. Anyone have any clue as to how to get it
out?

There are screws in each corner, but it also appears that the mirror is inside
the frame as well.

All the best,

I use a laptop with free OpenCPN at home for planning cruises.  It has a full
library of NOAA raster charts identical to paper.  I have a GNSS puck plugged
into computer which gives me foreign satellite systems as well as US GPS.  It
is remarkable at $19.95.  I also have a small Daisy AIS receiver attached $69.
On my IPhone I have PlantoNav with cmap charts.  Works well. On my Android I
have OpenCPN.  It can receive WiFi input for AIS and down load grib charts if
in internet range.   OpenCPN does not run on IPad.  At the helm of the boat I
have a Garmin 74 series chart plotter.  Under $500. It’s 7 inches and readable
under all conditions.  I have a daisy two channel AIS receiver attached that
works beautifully.  $89. It’s has its own rail mounted antenna and picks up
boats up to 15 miles away. Garmin Vector charts.  My mast top vhf antenna
doubles as a 2 meter ham antenna.  If I had unlimited budget I’d get a multi

currently have a dedicated Raytheon radar non digital.  Never use it.  Jerry

Have used iPad, lifeproof case, ram mount at helm and chart table. iNavx,
isailor, navionics.

Cheapest and my next iteration will probably be android tablet and isailor or
opencpn

My helm is under a Bimini and brightness isn’t an issue.

Sailing casually in Lake Ontario so navigation not as critical as for others

Biggest issue to me is lack of integration with Ray marine autopilot, and
weatherproof charging at helm. Also, wifi requires reset on rare occasions.

Stus-List Air conditioner placement

2018-10-20 Thread Chuck Saur via CnC-List
Ok all you 37+ guys...the mirror discussion sparked a thought: I have air
conditioner installation located in aft cabin hanging locker, and would
like to move it to have the storage. The space under the companionway is
open. I'm thinking I could install AC unit in the space below companionway
steps. This would allow a forward-facing air duct, and if the mirror were
shortened in the aft cabin, an aft-facing duct just over the engine
compartment.

In Michigan's UP, this might just be enough to keep cool on BOTH of those
warm days. Anyone with some creative experience and/or ideas?

Chuck,

That is the best place to do it — and I’ve seen others there.

The only problem I’ve heard of is the need to install new thru hulls for the AC
as it’s not a good idea to share your engine intake.

Take lots of photos.

All the best,

Re: Stus-List Air conditioner placement

2018-10-20 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
Our A/C is installed under the companionway stairs, above the engine, as
you suggested.

As our Aft Cabin mirror is plastic we just cut a hole through the mirror
itself for the A/C vent. It looks fine.

like to move it to have the storage. The space under the companionway is
open. I'm thinking I could install AC unit in the space below companionway
steps. This would allow a forward-facing air duct, and if the mirror were
shortened in the aft cabin, an aft-facing duct just over the engine
compartment.

I believe it is PYI. Had the yard do it, worth it. Good luck. Cheers.

 I have a Max-Prop, a R&D coupling isolator, R&D engine mounts, and I
have a PYI shaft seal - all the same company. I generally like the
engineering and customer support and like the shaft seal fine. That being
said, I would suggest taking a look at the Sailor Sam's shaft seal. As the
vendor described to me at the boat show you can evidently replace the
"packing" (carbon rings) with it installed and in the water. Some of the
models do not require the tension of a rubber bellows but rather have a
physical metal spring that maintains pressure.

Re: Stus-List C&C 33-2: PYI shaft seal

2018-10-20 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
I wonder if they were the older, original style that didn't have the water
vent tube. I believe you are supposed to 'Burp' the seal upon launch, to get
the air out. I have never done this, and never had any problem. I would
think you would have to really be spinning the shaft pretty fast to overheat
one of those to get them to crack and fail. I wonder if there were other
things at play to have caused that.
Just looked at the Lasdrop Shaft seals, and they look intriguing. There are
3 styles, and they look to be geared toward power boats. I wonder which one
is recommended for sailboats.

I don't know if this is brand-specific, or which brands were involved, but
while I had my boat hauled out and was in the process of making a decision
on what to do about the packing gland on my boat, 2 boats in the same marina
had serious leaks due to broken graphite parts in their dripless packings.
One of them sank and the other managed to get hauled out in time. I did not
know that such a catastrophic and sudden failure mode even existed up til
then. No vendor or manufacturer's literature that I had seen even mentioned
such a possibility. How such an event could be handled at sea I did not
know. Anyway, it freaked me out and I decided to install a new conventional
packing gland instead.

2018-10-20 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
I preferred the old PSS/PYI seals without the vent since it made one less
complication during install. It added user responsibility...

The guy at the sailboat show didn't indicate that the last-drop seals were
more or less for power or sail.

I assume that both companies will provide critical dimensions for the user
to make measurements prior to purchasing.
