I wonder if they were the older, original style that didn't have the water vent tube. I believe you are supposed to 'Burp' the seal upon launch, to get the air out. I have never done this, and never had any problem. I would think you would have to really be spinning the shaft pretty fast to overheat one of those to get them to crack and fail. I wonder if there were other things at play to have caused that. Just looked at the Lasdrop Shaft seals, and they look intriguing. There are 3 styles, and they look to be geared toward power boats. I wonder which one is recommended for sailboats.

One of them sank and the other managed to get hauled out in time. I did not know that such a catastrophic and sudden failure mode even existed up til then. No vendor or manufacturer's literature that I had seen even mentioned such a possibility. How such an event could be handled at sea I did not know. Anyway, it freaked me out and I decided to install a new conventional packing gland instead.
