Re: Stus-List Toe Rail Tie off

2018-06-19 Thread Dave Godwin via CnC-List
John,

I haven’t given this any thought but obviously I have the same issue. I’ve been
tying the lines to the toe-rail but this is a PITA and hardly ideal.

I’m re-bedding, re-fitting and adding to my deck hardware at the moment and
what I may do during this process is purchase a couple of quality cleats and
simply mount them just inside the toe-rail, allowing for enough clearance for
large lines,. I’ll back them up with a suitable section
 of
G10 painted white. Should do the trick.

I’ll be interested in the solutions offered by the list.

Stus-List Yanmar 2QM15 indicator lights and buzzer

2018-06-19 Thread Paul via CnC-List
Does anyone have experience with electrical system on this model of Yanmar? The
oil pressure, water temp lights and buzzer have not functioned since I
purchased Boomerang in 2016. Only the charge lamp lights up when the key is
turned to ON position. I’ve pulled the panel to check the bulbs and wiring.
There’s a rubber sleeve on each lamp that is not easy to remove to gain access
to the bulb and socket. Any suggestions before I start pulling or cutting to
remove them?

There’s also a light switch ( broken) but it’s not clear in the service manual
diagrams what it’s for. The wires go into the cable bundle but don’t appear to
exit anywhere. Mapping the entire electrical system from multiple PO’s has been
fun.

Thanks

2018-06-19 Thread Paul Fountain via CnC-List
We have a pair of foldable cleats on our 33-ll and the have worked well for us,
and we need them for our slip. To me the hull deck join is one of the stronger
sections of the board, and most of the load is almost parallel to the hull.
We’ve had no issues in 10+ years of use, and my sister has them on her 30 with
similar results.

I would not use them to tie off with the line at a right angle to thr hull
though.

Re: Stus-List Toe Rail Tie off

2018-06-19 Thread bushmark4--- via CnC-List
Good thread...; I have the Genoa track cleats and I find that they do OK for
docking at, say a marina or other low stress location, but they ride over the
toe rail and there is opportunity for chafe, so I don't trust them in high
tension areas, or where there is a heavy current. I also worry about the angle
of pull: if it's say, 80-90 degrees, will that warp or pull out the track?
When sailing, there is a tendency for the jib sheets to catch on them, so I
have to push them all the way forward to eliminate the ability for a flailing
sheet to catch...otherwise, they're great and I am happy to have them.

Re: Stus-List Toe Rail Tie off

2018-06-19 Thread Dave S via CnC-List
Have been contemplating this as well.

Wichard makes a toe rail padeye for this purpose. Spendy.

There is the commonly available folding cleat. To me it looks flimsy though
those who use them like them.

A u-bolt properly backed could be installed.

To distribute the load the line could be led through a lead on the toerail and
cleated elsewhere if that’s a concern.

Track mounted cleat could be used with a fairl lead as above. On my 33-2 I
want the entire track travel for available though.

I attach my Jacklines by pushing the end loop through the toerail then
inserting a carabiner through the loop so it functions as a toggle. This way
the clip is not taking the load, and the anodizing is not damaged.

I may do a similar toggle arrangement for a toerail dockline and tether the
carabiner to a spliced eye. This is quick, versatile and cheap, but the line
would be subject to a small amount of chafe on the toerail perforation.

Where we attach things to the toerail, I mark the location with coloured cable
ties.

My $.02.

Stus-List Toe rail tie off

I use a moveable cleat on the very front end of my Genoa track. The PO had one
and I picked up one for the other side. Works great.

In addition, I have a rail mounted cleat as a back up.

https://www.fisheriessupply.com/johnson-marine-toe-rail-folding-cleat-48-510

And bails. Three per side. Two for fenders and one forward for our preventer.
I would post a link, but It looks like C.S.Johnson stopped making them. But
they sure are handy.

Like these, but a little less fancy.

Stus-List Yanmar 2QM15 indicator lights and buzzer

2018-06-19 Thread Len Mitchell via CnC-List
Paul, A friend had a similar problem with his Yanmar. Have you inspected the
connection between the gauge package and the engine? It’s a large wire
connector that usually gets left under the engine in a dark damp spot. If you
get it apart and clean up the connections you may be surprised how corroded
they are by now. Sometimes it’s already been removed and you find a handful of
crimp or butt connectors wrapped in electrical tape but that solution never
lasts long. You can also use a continuity tester to test the circuit.

I had Johnson folding cleats on my toe rail and sliding on my genoa tracks.
Folding cleat worked well for spring line and can be folded out of way went not
in use. Genoa track cleats constantly hung up sheets when tacking.

There is the commonly available folding cleat. To me it looks flimsy though
those who use them like them.

A u-bolt properly backed could be installed.

To distribute the load the line could be led through a lead on the toerail
and cleated elsewhere if that’s a concern.

Where we attach things to the toerail, I mark the location with coloured
cable ties.

I would not use them to tie off with the line at a right angle to thr hull

Stus-List Toe Rail Tie off

2018-06-19 Thread robert via CnC-List

Richard,

Yes, I am on a slip at the marina.as previously mentioned, I leave
both fore and aft spring lines on the slip.

I use a bow line and a stern line.they come with me when I leave the
slipthe stern line is the exact length when docked with the bitter
end on a stern deck cleat with a loop that goes over the cleat on the
slipit just lays folded a bit on the deck when sailing.

The bow line is, I think, 20' or 25' and comes with me also.when
leaving the slip I bring the bow line back to the toe rail SS cleat and
tie it there.it stays there when sailing.when docking it can be
used to control the boat as you have a line from the bow over half the
length back to grab.    When the bow is tied to the deck cleat, the
extra line goes back to a forward stanchion but doesn't do anything...I
just tie it there so it is out of the way.   The port bow line to keep
the boat off the slip when docked comes with me alsoI just fold it
up and lay it on the bow roller.

Because I am usually alone, when docking I have rigged a snubber on a
line that the inboard end goes over the main winch and when I step off
the boat through the gate unto the slip/dock, I simply drop the loop on
the slip/dock cleat and the boat, with its forward motion, glides into
the slip.   I have this line just the right length so that the bow is
several feet from hitting the dock forward..the snubber cushions the
shock of stopping the forward motion of the boat.  When sailing and at
the dock, I keep the snubber line in the propane locker which I don't
keep propane in but everything else it seems.   Depending the wind, tide
conditions all the other lines then get attached as the situation
dictates.the fore and aft spring lines are connected with Carabiners.

My boat has been through all kinds of extremeweather at the slip with no
issues using the toe rail SS cleats.

Great ! Is the west Marine Foldable the same as the HMP ? I will be using for
My slip only and only for spring lines. I would like to do the X Cross on the
stern lines ( about 10 ft from Pile) to minimize side to side But that leaves
the spring to do the work fore and aft motion. If I need lateral (side) tie
will go direct to rail and will use several contact points on the toe rail

I just got a new insurance policy for our 1981 C&C 34 from BoatU.S. They have
not required a survey and the application was pretty straight forward - they
did however, want recent detailed pictures of the interior, exterior and
rigging of the boat which I was able to e-mail to the agent. The policy
includes coverage for cruising coastal waters of Canada, but I don't know if
they offer policies for boats based in Canada.

  Jeff:

My understanding is that most marine insurance companies require a survey
every five (5) years after a vessel reaches 15 years of age.

I am not allowed to keep a vessel at my club without providing proof of
insurancei.e. for my benefit and every other club member.

Re: Stus-List Toe Rail Tie

2018-06-19 Thread Lee Youngblood via CnC-List
Hi John,

We live aboard a modest C&C 35-II, a 1974 boat, in Seattle, with wind mostly
from the North and South. I hate to be bounced off the dock, and squeaking
fenders will make me get up in the night, and go spray them with the kitchen
soapy sprayer. It’s best to spring the boat off the dock with lines from the
toe rail. I have simply tied about a foot and a half of line or webbing, and
tucked the blight through the toe rail. The stern spring location is just aft
of the gate, and I use a 3/8 line with a snubber and scrap of hose for chafe.
It’s actually my stopping line, repurposed to spring the boat. I throw a
bowline around the cleat, run it to the toe-rail blight, push the hose back in
place, (yea I haven’t bothered to tie it there as things change) take the line
back to the dock cleat, easy. The forward spring has an old scrap of fire hose
for chafe and a snubber too, and goes through the blight about half way to the
shrouds. You will play with the spring positions and lines a few times, till
you can get the boat off the dock and parallel to the dock. Too far forward
and I will be pulling the bow away from the dock, too far aft and I’ll hit my
dinghy. Hope this makes sense.

When you have it located and tensioned, all sorted out, you can be comfortable
in 30+ knots. Then you just have to check the lines on the boats up wind.
Those rattly little knotted blights have held up for over 8 years, someday I
will do something prettier, a soft shackel, or not. . . Don’t over think it,
and yes carabiners will eat your toerail, not just the black coating, they will
chew up the AL rail too. Look at the stern spinnaker block locations of boats
that have been heavily raced. SS will eat AL.

Good luck, Lee

Thanks again for tall the feedback.
I orders 2 of the foldable from Fisheries they were best price of anyone $77 ea
vs $99 😊 I will try track cleat as well and see which works better. Although
they look sweet and I like a lot ! I am not getting 6 of the Wichard bails
@$97 a pop. Would like something like this for the toe rail in a $40 version?
But Hey its only $money$ right LOL! Never checked so just need to determine
genoa track size on My 37
1X1 1/8 or 1 1/4X 3/16 ? boat is 3 hrs from here.

I use a moveable cleat on the very front end of my Genoa track. The PO had one
and I picked up one for the other side. Works great.

https://www.fisheriessupply.com/schaefer-marine-mid-rail-chock-and-cleat

In addition, I have a rail mounted cleat as a back up.

https://www.fisheriessupply.com/johnson-marine-toe-rail-folding-cleat-48-510

And bails. Three per side. Two for fenders and one forward for our preventer.
I would post a link, but It looks like C.S.Johnson stopped making them. But
they sure are handy.

Like these, but a little less fancy.

John,

I haven?t given this any thought but obviously I have the same issue. I?ve been
tying the lines to the toe-rail but this is a PITA and hardly ideal.

I?m re-bedding, re-fitting and adding to my deck hardware at the moment and
what I may do during this process is purchase a couple of quality cleats and
simply mount them just inside the toe-rail, allowing for enough clearance for
large lines,. I?ll back them up with a suitable section
>
of G10 painted white. Should do the trick.

I?ll be interested in the solutions offered by the list.

+1. Changed to Progressive from BoatUS this year because BoatUS prices kept
going up and their coverages kept going down.

On the survey question, I remember doing a “self survey” for BoatUS, and also
sending them the professional pre-purchase survey I had done on my boat. For
Progressive, I also sent the pre-purchase survey. I haven’t had the boat for
five years yet, so I don’t know if I’ll get pestered. My yacht club requires
proof of insurance for racing, but I don’t think my marina does for slippage.

Incidentally, last Wednesday night I had the wildest race on Grenadine since
buying her. Wind jumped from 10mph to 35mph in the snap of a finger, a few
minutes after the start. Outflow from a big storm cell to the southeast, I
think. I had my drifter (150% lightweight genoa) and full main up for the
10mph conditions. We could see the puff on the water but couldn’t tell how
strong it was until we got in it - we were one of the first boats to get in it.
Rounded up hard four times, buried the side deck to the cabintop window, and
tore the clew cringle out of the drifter before I could even think to change
headsails. Managed to maintain position in the race under main alone while we
switched to the 130. Then had an accidental gybe and the boom knocked a
crewman into the cabin (lesson: don’t sail wing and wing in that strong of
wind). Still finished second despite the chaos. Sail is already fixed,
crewman has recovered. No lasting damage, some lessons learned, and the 30-1
proved her stiffness again.

Stus-List Free Sails for C&C 37+

I have two jibs that I don't use and will give them to anyone willing to
pick them up in Annapolis, MD. Below are links to photos and specs for each

o Luff = 52'

I took these sails to Bacon Sails last March and after several inquiries

not show any delamination nor did I see any when the photos were taken. It

I had to replace these on a C&C 30 Mk II a few years ago. It was a 1986 but
I believe C&C had the same tank manufacturer forever. The company name was
embossed faintly on the screw on port caps which I then used to Google
search and source new ones (which were very inexpensive by the way). If my
memory serves me (less so anymore) the name was Krakor? I can look on my
boat this weekend

Re: Stus-List marine insurance

2018-06-19 Thread Michael Brown via CnC-List

Last Wednesday a storm blew through Ontario also. I was not sure if RC would
start a race but a
few boats showed up so the set a 1.8 mile leg once around. I knew the wind was
up, sustained over
20 kts so went out with a 90% blade and full main. After a couple of gusts we
reefed the main.

It hit 42 kts upwind but balance was OK. Boat windage is pretty high and even
with only 3 miles fetch
the waves were surprisingly hard so we angled off a bit to not pound so much.
We average around
5.4 kts upwind ( not VMG ) which surprised me. Tacking was an art, needed to
bow down slightly to
get 6 knots before coming up.

Downwind was harder, had to run wider angles to depower the main. I think if it
was possible to drop
it we would have and run the jib only. Top speed when a square wave caught us
and pushed was 10.9 kts,
think that was the fastest I have seen Windburn go.

We corrected over the bigger boats that had a much faster downwind, including a
Bene 36.7, J/105 and J/35.
The only boat that is similar to us is a C&C 3/4 ton ( race version of the 33 )
which we beat by over an hour level.

Two waves, or maybe spray, got lifted so much they blew over the boat without
soaking us. I have no idea what
the winds got to because during the 42+ knot gust the end of the MHU blew off.
When the wind lifts the spray
off the waves it is usually above 45 knots as a guess.

For most boats docking was just as exciting.

+1.  Changed to Progressive from BoatUS this year because BoatUS prices kept
going up and their coverages kept going down.

On the survey question, I remember doing a ?self survey? for BoatUS, and also
sending them the professional pre-purchase survey I had done on my boat.  For
Progressive, I also sent the pre-purchase survey.  I haven?t had the boat for
five years yet, so I don?t know if I?ll get pestered.  My yacht club requires
proof of insurance for racing, but I don?t think my marina does for slippage.

We could see the puff on the water but couldn?t tell how
strong it was until we got in it - we were one of the first boats to get in it.
Rounded up hard four times, buried the side deck to the cabintop window, and
tore the clew cringle out of the drifter before I could even think to change
headsails.  Managed to maintain position in the race under main alone while we
switched to the 130.  Then had an accidental gybe and the boom knocked a
crewman into the cabin (lesson: don?t sail wing and wing in that strong of
wind).  Still finished second despite the chaos.  Sail is already fixed,
crewman has recovered.  No lasting damage, some lessons learned, and the 30-1
prov

Re: Stus-List C&C34 Water tank hatch covers

2018-06-19 Thread Bruce Whitmore via CnC-List
Hello all,
Below is the text from a post I made earlier this year regarding the caps for
C&C water tanks:
After striking out at our local RV store and online searches, I called Kracor
tanks.  They told me in no uncertain terms they only work with boat
manufacturers, not individuals.  They tried to tell me to call C&C.  Finally I
got connected with someone back in the shop who directed me to:

Claires Marine Outfitters2921 SW 2nd Ave,
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315(954) 523-4301
They had them in stock, $10 apiece plus shipping.
You may want to make a note of this if you think you'll need a cap someday.
As it turns out the lip on one of my caps is bent up, and as a result the cap
itself is leaking through a crack.  Thus the need for the replacement.

By the way, I took the advice of getting x type o-rings, and for about $10 I
got a package of 10.  They work great and seal much better than the original
gasket/o-rings.  I got them through McMaster Carr.

Thanks everyone for the help,

I just got a new insurance policy for our 1981 C&C 34 from BoatU.S. They have
not required a survey and the application was pretty straight forward - they
did however, want recent detailed pictures of the interior, exterior and
rigging of the boat which I was able to e-mail to the agent. The policy
includes coverage for cruising coastal waters of Canada, but I don't know if
they offer policies for boats based in Canada.

My understanding is that most marine insurance companies require a survey every
five (5) years after a vessel reaches 15 years of age.

I am not allowed to keep a vessel at my club without providing proof of
insurancei.e. for my benefit and every other club member.

Trusting this is helpful.

Stus-List Yanmar 3hmf

2018-06-19 Thread pete.shelquist--- via CnC-List
This is a big ask, but my service manuals for the Yanmar 3HMF with Kanzaki
KBW10E transmission are on the boat, which is 4+ hrs away.

I need to replace the dampening disk and am hoping someone on the list has
manuals and can send me torque specs and any other disassembly/assembly
instructions the manuals may provide. I would like to be sure I have all the
needed tools when I next go up for the repair. Any other ad hoc advice is
appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I think this will do it for you Pete. Let me know if there is anything
specific which isn't covered. I can look it up personally.

Riveting. It certainly is a reminder of the absolute power of nature and

I will try to get down to the boat before morning. Sounds like the same rig.
