What a fantastic story and great technical guide. The PO of my boat did
this, but it was a bit of a mystery and I have never checked what he did. I
will now.
Your guide should be put in the technical part of the cncphotoalbum.

Re: Stus-List Replacing shifter cable

2017-12-11 Thread Chuck Gilchrest via CnC-List
Don,

Do not take apart the Pedestal to replace the cables. You will need to remove
the compass and the engine control cylinder but there’s no need to take apart
the wheel shaft (if you have, go ahead and replace and lubricate the shaft
bearings once you’re in there with Teflon grease, not petroleum grease). I’ve
attached Edson’s instructions on replacing the cables and if anyone needs to be
walked through the process, simply call Edson 508-995-9711 and Ken Martin will
happily help you through the process.

The process is not intuitive so it is best to read the directions first.

Re: Stus-List Replacing shifter cable

2017-12-11 Thread mike amirault via CnC-List
Don, I have replaced both the shifter and the throttle cable on my C&C33ii.
(Edson pedestal) Disconnecting the cable from the levers is probably the
easiest part of the job. The two big issues I ran into were: 1. The cables
are strapped to the rear of the pedestal via a special clamp. If you have an
acorn nut about a foot down on the stern side of the pedestal, you have this
clip. Removing it is easy; just remove the acorn nut and the bolt will slip
inside the pedestal. However, reinstalling the clip is nearly impossible
without removing the chain drive for the steering. 2. When I tried to
reinsert the new cables through the deck, the ends would not pass through
the hole, there was just no wiggle room below decks to allow the cables to
be inserted. This meant dropping the sheave plate, removing the pedestal and
making a larger hole in the deck for the cables to pass through. After that,
it is just a matter of reassembling everything and ensuring that the cables
are clear of the steering chain/cables.

The arrangement on your C&C34 may be a little different. Good luck.

The $1 solution was sealing the hole and the $20 solution was having the mast

width of the bilge and does try and bend the wood.

Does anyone have experience with this set up? Where is the clamp that is

Don — that’s most likely the older Edson system, with the narrower riser tube
on the pedestal; Chuck Gilchrest will know the model number (301?). That’s a
completely different animal, and something I don’t think Edson has sold for 35
years or more. The system was in place on my LF38 when I bought her; I’ve
since replaced the entire pedestal, as I wanted the different control scheme
and also needed to fit a wheel pilot (something you couldn’t do on the

Re: Stus-List Replacing shifter cable - but

2017-12-11 Thread bwhitmore via CnC-List
I replaced the cable on my 1977 C&C 27 which sounds like the same setup.  There
is a small screw on the tube that holds the shifter cable bracket.  If memory
serves, once you remove the screw you can lift the cable or push it up from
below, and the pull the cotter pin.
Feel free to call if you want to talk it through.

Don — that’s most likely the older Edson system, with the narrower riser tube
on the pedestal; Chuck Gilchrest will know the model number (301?).  That’s a
completely different animal, and something I don’t think Edson has sold for 35
years or more.  The system was in place on my LF38 when I bought her; I’ve
since replaced the entire pedestal, as I wanted the different control scheme
and also needed to fit a wheel pilot (something you couldn’t do on the
four-tube system).

Hi
Thanks to comments on replacing shifter cable.  The catch is I'm not sure the
binnacle is an Edson.  The shifters are not mounted in the side of the binnacle
and the cables do not run up and down inside the binnacle.  Rather they run up
through the binnacle support/protector stainless tubes.  There are four
supports on this boat, two fore and two aft of the binnacle.  The cables run up
the aft tubes, one on either side.
Does anyone have experience with this set up?  Where is the clamp that is
holding the cable?

Stus-List 2018 Mid-Atlantic C&C rendezvous

2017-12-11 Thread Daniel Sheer via CnC-List
 Josh,
White Rocks Marina, where Pegathy is docked, has lots of transient slips, and
Mike's Crab House North on the property (though it may be closed in early
October). It's 33 min from Annapolis by car. Maryland Yacht club is also
nearby, and might host the rendezvous. It's about 4-5 hours north of Annapolis
under sail.  Also an easy sail to Ft. McHenry and Baltomore's Inner Harbor. I
can check out both if you wish.

Consider the PS article in the link below.  I've been very happy with Yale
Crystaline and Sampson Warpspeed.

Also consider the excerpt (source unknown) below:
I was taught (by an English race crew) that Mainsail controls are always
green, jib sails blue and spinnakers red. Halyards are solid colors and
sheets, outhauls etc. flecked or with tracers. (By following this
convention, crews are able to move from boat-to-boat without having to be
re-educated.)

Ok guys (and gals),

Sorry if this is a repeat.  It didn't look like my first email ever hit the
server.

The dates for the Annapolis Sailboat show have been released as well as my
work/vacation schedule for 2018.  You might remember that I had mapped the
distances which people were willing to drive and boat.  The resulting area
which attracted the most people was more or less a zone on the western
shore of the Chesapeake Bay between Annapolis and Solomons.  We could get
as many as 29 people total and 13 by boat!

The dates which I'm looking at are October 1st through the 8th (this
encompasses the sailboat show which is the 4th through the 8th) and October
26th to the 1st.  If held during the later dates we can easily hold the
rendezvous in Annapolis since dockage and mooring won't be a problem.  If
held during the earlier dates (during the boat show) we could hold the
rendezvous at nearby towns within a 30 minute drive of the boat show.  I'm
personally leaning towards the later dates since Annapolis is such a great
town to visit and has such good boating amenities; It would be nice if
everyone had a chance to see it without the craziness of the boat show.  If
during the boat show is the preference then I was thinking that maybe
Herrington Harbor North or somewhere in Deal, MD would be nice.  For those
who want to attend the boat show Deal is only a 30 minute drive.  I'm sure
there are marinas elsewhere closer to Annapolis yet away from the crowds
that I'm not aware of.  I'm eager to hear everyones thoughts and
suggestions.

Thanks,

Re: Stus-List 2018 Mid-Atlantic C&C rendezvous

2017-12-11 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Dan,

I welcome all the help and suggestions I can get. Make a case that meets
the considerations of all interested parties. 2 things I'm trying to keep
in mind is that the most number of people are able to attend either by car
or by boat if it is held between Solomons and Annapolis. The other thing
is that survey results showed having places to go and things to do was
almost as important as the rendezvous. Those are the 2 big reason I'm
leaning towards Annapolis...just not during the boat show.

In Annapolis there are 3 or 4 marinas in the direct vicinity of the Spa
Creek Bridge. This puts us close enough to walk or dinghy just about
anywhere in downtown or Eastport. It also puts us close to the moorings
and anchorages if anyone would prefer the privacy and lower cost. They
have a water taxi too. For those looking to stay in a hotel, the downtown
Marriott is right there too. The prices are looking like $35 for a mooring
and $2 to $3 per foot for a slip.

Thanks for the input, keep it coming.

Josh,

Plenty of slips in Back Creek too. Watergate Marina is an option, plus
people can anchor in the Creek for free. Larger boats can anchor off the
seawall by the Naval Academy and there is also room in Weems Creek, just
off the Severn River. There used to be Navy mooring balls in the Creek,
but I've heard they were removed.

Re: Stus-List Replacing shifter cable - but

2017-12-11 Thread Chuck Gilchrest via CnC-List
Don,

Your boat has the same engine control as mine. It was a control made
specifically for C&C because the engineers at C&C didn’t like the idea of the
control cables for the engine running inside the pedestal, fearing they would
possibly foul on the steering gear. It is either an Edson 737 or 747 control
depending on whether you have an Atomic 4 (using a series 64 Morse Cable for
the shift) or a diesel with a pair of Morse 33 cables. The only difference is
the length of the cable clamps and the type of shift lever (the one for the gas
engine has a long removable lever that stores on a hole in the engine control’s
top plate). As soon as you started talking about removing the top plate, I
suspected that your engine control was different than what was being discussed.

On these controls, there is a strap steel clamp that extends down the stainless
tube that serves to hold the cable from moving up and down when you actuate the
levers. I can’t recall the exact size of screw that anchors these long metal
pieces but they can be a real bear to remove.

So, your compass needs to come off.. the top plate that bolts down onto the top
of the controller comes off, you reach into the control and remove the cotter
pin that holds the control lever to the cable clevis, remove the pivot bolt
(screw?) and slide the control lever out of the engine control. Whatever you
do, don’t break anything because parts are pretty much impossible to find.
Remove the clamp screw and pull the cable up sufficiently to unscrew the clevis
from the threaded cable end. The cable can either be routed up or down,
depending on what would be the easier access. I typically find pushing the
cable up through the tubes from below deck works better than feeding them down
the tube.

Should something be broken or the engine control is badly corroded, a refit to
a model 816 engine control (diesel engine) or 751 (gas engine/paragon
transmission) is probably recommended. This new control will fit between the
pedestal and compass.

I hope this helps.

Again, If you struggle with the direction given here, Ken Martin at Edson has

Water taxi service means no dinghy needed as well in Annapolis. LOTS of things
to do ashore for the shopping inclined. When we lived on the Severn many a

work and instead of heading out Saturday, breakfast ashore would turn into a

Stus-List New Lister - Need Help Identifying Water System Fitting Type - C&C 36 1981

2017-12-11 Thread Tim Rutherford via CnC-List
Newbie here. Bought my first keelboat in June of this year, a 1981 C&C 36'
with a centerboard. These boats are highly regarded in this area and
personally, I absolutely love mine. Been racing other-people's-boats and
bareboat cruising in Tampa Bay and the Caribbean for decades. I am a
member of the Davis Island Yacht Club. I am an electrical engineer with
specialty in automation and controls and I work with a Florida electric
cooperative utility. Joined the database and this list just a few weeks ago.

Looking for a source of a replacement parts for the pressurized water
system tubing & fittings. One of compression nuts is cracked. The elbow
fitting on the vent line shown in the photo is the type in question
although the broken nut is elsewhere. I also wonder if the ferrule and
back-up ring can be removed and replaced, or if it must be cut off and
replaced with a new one.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5A2zIupq2XBbHhyLWRRcGhXSXRpeG9oVlVlY0FTRjhndEdj

The line size is 1/2" O.D. X 3/8" I.D. and the tubing is made of an unknown
type of hard gray plastic. It doesn't appear to have any markings.

Any help is appreciated.

Joe,

You're absolutely right about St Michael's being a charming port with lots
of shops and restaurants. For that matter there are a few more charming
places on the eastern shore which I'm perfectly willing to consider
(Cambridge, Oxford, Tillman Island) and I'm sure more which I am simply
unaware of. I was concerned about excluding people by pushing too remote.
Feel free to review the the maps and see if there are any ports of call
which I overlooked. Having a medium amount of amenities, things to do, and
places to eat was more or less the consensus of the survey. Annapolis,
Solomons, and St Michael's were overwhelmingly suggested by the survey
respondents. State your case for your preferred port of call. Bear in
mind that you may also become the embassador since I may not be as familiar
with the available services.

https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B8pEh5lnvP1yMUdWdWRha1FxMG8

I draft 6.5' so depth is a regular consideration for all of the discussed
ports.

2017-12-11 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Qest was made by Zurn out of polybutylene plastic. The fittings have some
great advantages including the ability to assemble/disassemble without
tools and freeze resistance. The problem is that chlorine has the effect
of degrading the plastic and making it brittle. You'll probably notice
that the areas in contact with the water are white. The plastic wasn't
made that way is was bleached. There was a class action law suit against
Zurn. Zurn is now the current maker of PEX which IIRC is made from HDPE
and is not compatible with Qest in any way.

As an alternative, some folks relocate their engine controls on a bulkhead in
the cockpit and go to a single lever control..but only if you have a diesel

If you have any pictures similar to what Dennis sent to show how your main
halyard exits the mast (assuming it runs up inside) that would be appreciated.
My main halyard is all wire, not rope / wire so might be different than what
you had. The jib and spinnaker halyards are rope / wire.
My 35-1 has the same grooves in the splash rail so intend run them from the
mast through a turning block back through the grooves into rope clutches as
there are already winches back there.
Thanks to everyone who has provided feedback. Much appreciated.
Cheers,

Jim,

I replaced the original wire/rope halyards a few years ago, using 3/8 Sta Set
for both main and jib. Didn't do anything regarding the masthead sheave, and
it's been ok. I cruise mostly, as for racing my sails are so blown out a slight
strecthing of halyard won't make much difference...

A PO had run the main and one jib halyard back to the cockpit; my 35-1 has a
grooves in the splash rail that's just forward of the hatch, they run P/S
through those grooves. He mounted a turning block on the deck in line with the
halyard exit on the mast and the groove, and put a kind of smaller winch on the
aft end of the deckhouse. It's worked fine so far, though the backing under
turning blocks wasn't done well, just screws and washers to the underside of
the liner. That's been on my list.

I'm reluctant to go much smaller as it may be hard to hold / pull on.

James,

I have looked at Touche's main halyard masthead sheave and box with an eye to
replace the existing wire/rope halyard with an all rope halyard. Touche's
sheave is a wire sheave not a wire/rope sheave. The sheave box is fairly
narrow. So far I've been reluctant to make the conversion. It would require a
couple hours work at the masthead to enlarge the opening and install a new box.
This would be complicated by the existing hole pattern.

My opinion, and that of some other listers is that a small diameter high tech
halyard would work in the existing sheave.

However, I have removed the wire winch and run the main halyard aft. I removed
the fixed halyard exit sheave at the mast base, covered the hole with a metal
plate and installed Garhauer swivel turning blocks for all the halyards,
topping lift, etc. The halyards run aft to Lewmar triple rope clutches.

As I recall, the wire winch sat on a teak base on the starboard side. I simply
plugged the holes with teak bungs.

You're welcome to look at pictures of Touche's deck organizers, mast base
turning blocks, etc. here:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_sb5TfIENvsNll4b3ZwM1B4a28

The holes for the fasteners for the deck organizers and rope clutches are
covered by nylon plugs. Here's a pic of the plugs covering the nuts for the
rope clutches.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ep3_LqsCzqnnNYUtU6OPFDGGeMoeA3jo

I upgraded the cabin top winches to Barient 22's. That required strengthening
the deck under the winches. I epoxied additional layers of roving in the
access.

You're welcome to contact me for any details.

Hi Don

Chuck’s instructions pretty much mirror our experience. Once the compass and
plate are off and the cable clamp screw is removed, the entire cable / clamp /
handle assembly can be removed from the binnacle. Attach new cable to the
handle, attach cable clamp, refit into binnacle and tube. Be especially aware
the handles only go in one way so carefully note their position going out so
you can replicate going in. Best of luck

Again, If you struggle with the direction given here, Ken Martin at Edson has
been dealing with “over the phone” help for these controls for 20 years or more
and was always better than me with the customers! They may still have a
photocopy of the original installation instructions they can send in a PDF.

Good luck,

Chuck Gilchrest
